Still Greatly Appreciate 2018 Huyndai KONA SEL suv

As of April 2020 we still like our Kona. It has been fine and has not had any difficulty. The 2018 Huyndai KONA SEL suv without contrasting roof looks good and drives like a charm. The ride and comfort of the KONA is unusual in this sub-compact segment. We werre really surprised when we went to see it two weeks after hearing about. Purchased it at the second dealer we visited. It was a same day deal. It beat out a huge discount on Ford Escape, a larger vehicle. Over the last year we had looked at Honda HR-V, Toyota CH-R, Mazda CX-3, Nissan Juke, Jeep Compass, Chevy Trax and Buick Encore. For our purposes the 2.0 L base engine is fine. I did notice the cargo and passenger rating is an additional 860 pounds. Traded in a 2015 Honda Fit EX-L Navi. The Kona has Android Auto which when used with a Android smartphone will handle the Navigation aide task just fine. I appreciate the variaty of four trim levels and additional optional equipment being available for those that choose to upscale. We are fine with a SEL. I'm a 6 foot 3 420 pound senior citizen and the comfort, legroom and headroom UP FRONT is just fine. The front shoulder room is fine. The rear seats are restricted. The front doors are easy to get in and out. Defintely appreciate the standard warraanty.. traction control is fine. safety aides are controllable and not a nuisance. Greatly appreciated.

Love this car!

I have high praise for everything I've experienced with this car, having had it for only six weeks. The safety features are fantastic, especially the glass pop up screen that tells me my speed, shows me cars approaching on either side of me, and shows me my next navigation turn. It holds the road like a champ. It does everything automatically -- turns my lights on and off, turns the brights on and off, and runs the windshield wipers at whatever speed the rain requires. The electronics are a bit complicated, but very exciting once you've mastered them. (Love that it charges an i-phone 8 or higher by just lying it on the shelf under the dashboard.) I'm a senior and feel that this car makes me a far safer driver. It won't let me make a mistake. It beeps at me for everything from wandering out my lane to leaving my keys in the car. Navigation is not as good as Google maps, but I use it anyway as I like having my turns crop up on the glass panel. Also, really crowded in backseat with grandkids' babyseats. Think this new model offers a huge value for the price.

My First Hyundai!

As a "Baby Boomer" who favors practical cars over "flash" cars these days, the Hyundai Kona fills many of my current requirements. It's not fast, but fairly reliable; It doesn't have a leather interior, but that's OK; and It does have ample storage space with the back seats folded down. One of the main features is that it sits and feels like a full-sized car in a compact configuration, with a high roof. It really is too new to discuss reliability or car maintenance, but these should not be a problem. I only have three issues with this car: (1) The motor should have a larger option than the 2.0L version, (2) it doe not come with a sunroof, and (3) this car is unbearably noisy - especially in heavy rainfall or storms. The noise of the rain hitting the roof of the cabin becomes deafening! Really the acoustics could stand a great improvement - especially compared with other competitors in this class. So I guess this car hit the mark for its target audience, but with just a little more of an upgrade option, and better noise deadening technology for a quieter cabin, this car would satisfy the requirements of a wider audience.

Can't wait to drive it in the snow!

I love the car so far. It has plenty of cargo space for what I need, the front seats are super comfy. The only problem I have is the visibility at night. The low beams are nice and bright but pointed too low. If you're any more than 2 seconds behind someone, too close for high beams, there is a big black void between you and the car you're following. I'm going to see if they can be adjusted a bit higher. I live in a mountainous area, the roads aren't level, the headlights are pointed directly at the road so it's hard to see what's standing on the road. Like moose and deer. Update- I've driven in the snow. A lot. Winter started here mid-November this year. It's great! It glides through 8-10" like nothing. I thought I'd be stuck in my driveway in the super slushy, heavy, icky "snow" up past the license plate with a thick coating of ice underneath, and nope, didn't skip a beat.

I was driving a 2015 Rav 4 and I wanted something that got better mileage and with a smaller footprint. I test drove a few vehicles, but once I drove the Hyundai Kona I knew it was the vehicle for me. It is sporty, roomy for a 6 foot guy like me, fun to drive, gets an average of 30 mpg, and it a great value for the money. In Lawrence Kansas I found a Kona with the SEL trim, I added leather, and it was approx 22K. It is hard to find any SUV under 25K, especially one that has the quality and style of the Kona. I have only had it for a few weeks, but so far it has been great on the highway, getting up to 75 with no problems. It is fun and zippy to drive around town too. I have owned a Hyundai so I know they build good, solid cars for the money. I did give it a "Good" on the interior. There are hard plastics, but they look classy and seem to be designed to be long lasting. The hatch area and seats fold down for extended storage. Not sure sure if my bike will fit in the back like it did in my Rav 4, but a bike rack on the back will take care of that. Overall, the Kona is fun, well built, and a lot of SUV for the money. UPDATE- Had my Kona 6 months now, no complaints. Getting about 30 MPG on average. I did upgrade the interior through the dealer to leather and it looks and feels great. The only thing it does not do well is handling seems or cracks in the roadway at low speeds. Because of the short wheelbase you can feel these seems in the road at low speeds. Once you are up over 45 or on the freeway at 60 to 75 miles an hour it rides great. Quick Update, After 4 years I traded in my Kona on another new car. I have to admit, I miss my Kona sometimes, it was always reliable and peppy and great on gas. Very impressed with the Hyundai quality. I have looked at the 2024 Kona, new design, it looks like a great vehicle. I hope Hyundai continues to build quality vehicles and keeps up the great work !

The 2018 Hyundai Kona is a must have for budget concious, style seeking and overall performance buyers. I have mine for about 4 weeks now and the smoothride and the perfect height to get out of the vehicle ( not to low ...not to high) reaffirms my decision to go with this vehicle. I have the SEL version which includes Sirius radio and a bunch of safety features. I can recommend this vehicle without any reservation!

I traded in my Elantra for the Kona and it is a lot more comfortable to drive, its not too big but also not too small it really is the perfect size. I like all of the features of the Kona except for trying to open the back, the elantra (as well as many other models) allow you to open the back from inside the vehicle and also on the key. With the Kona you can only open it if you are standing in the back and lift it open, its annoying to me because I have to put stuff down to lift it open instead of pushing a button and having it lift automatically.

Kona Power!

My husband and I started looking at the new 2018 Hyundai Kona on line. We had owned a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe for years and were very happy with the low cost of maintenance and dependability. So, when we decided to trade in the Santa Fe for a new vehicle it was a no brainer. But, we also wanted to check out other small SUVs to compare deals and the quality along with performance. OMG, we drove so many and visited so many dealerships! The Ford Eco Sport not only was tiny, it was very uncomfortable and felt so cheap. Especially for the price. Plastic every where. I felt as if I were driving a toy. Next, we drove the GMC Terrain. Again, felt cheap, uncomfortable and the price was staggering! Then the Chevy Equinox. I actually enjoyed the ride, it was comfy, but, not economical. With gas prices the way they are, you need economical! The Honda CR-V felt tiny. The Honda pricing was difficult to swallow. So, moving on. We kept thinking about the Hyundai Kona and decided to check it out. We feel in love immediately! We are not small people, and there are three of us including our 6’ 3” large teenage son. All three of us fit comfortably! I was shocked to say the least. From the outside the Kona looks small. But, it is definitely large on the inside! The Kona is an absolute blast to drive. Fast, OMG! I love the Sport driving mode. We pass other vehicles on the freeway with ease! The gas tank is only 12 gallons, but, the fuel economy is awesome! We get close to 400 miles per tank and that includes city stop & go driving! The instrumentation is very well thought out and easy for anyone sitting in either front seats to reach and operate. I love the big touch screen panel! The system picks up every one of our Bluetooth phones. Operating the entertainment, climate controls, phone, everything is easy! We chose the base model and got it for a steel! The dealership gave us everything we wanted and more. This Hyundai Kona takes corners like it is on rails! Steering is smooth and responsive. Breaking is perfect. I can’t say enough about the Kona! We are so very happy with it and would not trade it back! Thank you Hyundai for designing and small SUV that packs a serious punch!

First model year beware

That the 2.0 engine is adequate in normal mode and very sporty and quick in sport mode. I am also getting better mileage than listed. I drove the Mazda CX3 and the Honda HRV and the Kona was the car I chose . Fun styling, huge value and one of the best cars I have driven. Most cars on the road are monochromatic = Black, White or silver. I opted for the blue body and the Charcoal top. This color really pops and exemplifies the great lines of the vehicle. Driving on the highway in a spring winter storm the aerodynamics of the body cut through the 35 MPH WINDS and the 3 inches of snow. I highly recommend the Kona, great 5 year, 60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty! 100,000 on the drivetrain! So DON'T beware of this 1st year vehicle!! Grab one!

1200 miles in, I like pretty much everything about this car. I opted for the 1.6 turbo and it's a speedy little bottlerocket. Very tight handling. I'm used to feeling like my old SUV was going to tip over but not with this one. It handles corners beautifully. It looks very small from the outside but there's plenty of room inside tons of room up front, back seats are a tiny bit tight but there's plenty of storage in the back especially with the seats down.

I'm having so much fine driving it that I even look forward to the drive to work! Gas mileage is much better than I anticipated, but I do have a light foot after driving a Prius for 8 years. Visibility is great. Love the screen and electronics. My husband has a big SUV, so I didn't need too much cargo space. It works well for me. I love my surf blue Kona. Stands out in a sea of black, grey and white SUVs!

We got a 2018 Base AWD Kona last August with no optional equipment at a very attractive price. The car is quiet, very easy to drive especially in rain. It is extremely easy to see out of. About the only gripe I have is the base 147 horsepower engine is okay but not at all quick which is fine for my wife! I drive a VW GTI so am somewhat biased toward fast cars but the Kona is perfectly acceptable and fine on the highway. I especially love the great mileage - easily over 30 on regular. I was also surprised that Hyundai gives you Hankook Kinergy tires as standard equipment - a great tire! The car is now a year old - absolutely flawless performance over the year = Honda quality at a lower price. Definitely recommend the Kona to anyone wanting a very reliable small AWD car - love it!

All the reviews are true, this car rocks. I love everything about this car. It has comfortable leather seats, a sunroof, 18" wheels, and a "goofy cute" exterior with great handling, performance and amazing gas mileage. I've owned everything from a BMW 3series, silver anniversary Vette, a pickup truck to several Jeeps and sedans, even a Veloster & Tuscon. My new Kona is the cutest, most fun and by far my favorite of all.

I test drove the Honda HRV and was not impressed with the control, noise and comfort. I went to Hyundai and was looking at the Tuscon which was too big for just me. My dealer showed me the new smaller SUV Kona. Really sharp looking and has all the bells and whistle's but the cost was less than a Honda. I took it for a test drive and was impressed with pick up and control. The only down side is I wish the seats were cushioned more. It's not uncomfortable but I like cushy seats. All in all I got a great deal and love my new SUV. I would recommend this SUV to all who read this review.

The 2018 Kona Limited FWD with the turbo and DCT transmission is my all-time favorite after 50 years of driving. The Kona offers 90% of the power and handling of our former VW Gti ( my second best) with better warranty and easier maintenance. Overall 30 mpg on regular. Zero to sixty at 6.6 seconds as per Car and Driver. I seldom use more than 60-70 % of the claimed horsepower because going over that will / could cost a loss of driving privileges. Some reviews mention a rough transmission - (DCT only.) I love the DCT and my wife can drive it like any other automatics we had in the last 35 years. With most others cars we owned before driving was a necessary chore. With the Kona, I'm looking for an excuse to take it out again, (same as the VW Gti). If you are a car nut, please get the turbo engine, not much more, and gets same gas mileage. Update: after 3 years zero problems, transm. is great, love the car, would buy another if stolen. The Kona is a keeper. Update: 4 years later it is still my favorite. Zero problems, 29-30 overall mpg on regular. We do lots of short trips in the 2-3 mile range so for most people the gas mileage might be better. We have a Point 65 modular kayak and it fits in the back with the rear seats folded. The service dept. at Chico Hyundai, CA, is excellent. Update after 5 years: zero problems, pure joy to drive. I might get the N version if I live long enough.

The 2018 Kona is a zippy fun car to drive around. Good gas mileage, better acceleration than reported. Handles great and fun to drive. Big info screen is great and interactive. Issues are these. 1. Headliner keeps dropping down and rattling. Brought to the dealership, they did not have an answer after a week of having the car. Still no solution 2 weeks later. 2. Back hatch does not properly close unless slammed. 3. Apple car play is hit and miss on connecting to the same phone. 4. Sun visors flip up so hard they cause the sunglasses holder to pop open time and time again. 5. When windows are opened in back and front not the whole car shakes, big airflow issue. 6. Storage is tight, very limited with cargo space, should not be considered an SUV. 7. Radio volume is quite lower than expected, dealership did not install antenna when first purchased. 8. The base options on the Kona are much lower overall quality the the 2017 Tuscon we also own. Overall a good little car, sub compact class. 3rd Hyundai we have owned, just the fact that it is a new car design and class, seems to have quite a few bugs that must be remedied in order for this to be a successful new car launch.

I purchased my 2018 Kona in October 2018. So far I have been pleased with the car. The check engine light came on at about 248 miles. I took the car into the dealer and a 120 point inspection was performed with no problems found. The front right brake made a scrubbing noise while the car was in motion. My car has about 300 miles on it. I had to leave the car with the dealer to check out the tire noise because the noise was only audible when the car was cold, once the car warmed up the noise subsided. Also, you will need an Apple iphone to download Blue Link or Apple CarPlay and most dealers don't have the means or know how to install the App for you, not even for a fee. Other than these issues, there is nothing I can say about the car except it a great car. Other people that see the car for the first time says it's a cute car. I love my car because it's a smaller SUV/cross over.

Update 2021: still loving my Kona. Drives well. Perfect for city full time but also vacations in the mountains. My only suggestion is to add the hands free opening for the back hatch. I chose to buy the Kona after a lot of research. I went for the Limited AWD after comparing to a few cars in the class and it had so many features you can’t get on other cars for the price. After about 2 months, I am so happy with my purchase! It has the feel of luxury but also sporty. The sport mode is so fun! I can’t wait to put it to the test this winter in the North East.

This car is a great buy and comfortable on the highway, too. Considering the price, it’s everything I could ask for and then a bit more. I would highly recommend! 2/26/22: Overall a great little vehicle. Pro’s include good mileage, (average 34mpg,) no breakdowns, body holding up well. Con’s include jerky transmission when it’s cold outside, light weight really feels high crosswinds, buzzy speakers since the car was a few months old, and needing to take care when using the Sport Mode, because she wants to rear back like a horse in 1st gear. A spunky car.

I had a Sonata the ride was great smooth. The Kona ride is a different feel not as smooth. I was surprise but it is a suv so I should have realize the ride would be different. But I love the car great to park if you live in Brooklyn. I love the look of the Kona Stylish and cute so comfortable. Enjoying my car.

If you are a single person, or married with no children. This vehicle is GREAT! This is a compact SUV with little leg room in the back, but a huge rear compartment when the seats are folded down. I have owned a total of 15 Hyundai's and this by far is the best model I have owned for the cost. I got just the base model with AWD which came more than enough features, WHICH WERE ALL STANDARD ! I didn't need, or want, any of the optional bells and whistles. I got everything I needed for a very economical price. My wife and I were so impressed, that a week after buying the first Kona, we went back and bought a second one !!!

When I was researching small SUVs, the Kona immediately caught my eye! The huge grille and sporty styling was very attractive, so I delved deeper. Once I found out the amount of tech and safety amenities (standard FCA, LKA, Pedestrian detection,, etc) you get for the price, it was a no brainer. So I took the plunge, and I’m sure glad I did! So here’s a rundown of my experience driving this beauty for 30K PROS: Attractive AF Styling Plentiful tech Standard Safety system (FCA, LKA, RCTA, etc) Easy to maneuver/park Reasonable ride height Excellent reliability (never once broke down) Simple controls for media/climate CONS: Minor rattles from trim pieces Sound system rattles at higher volumes Minimal storage space Stiff suspension (you will feel those bumps) Smaller cargo space The 2.0L engine is a tad sluggish But despite the minor cons about the vehicle, the Kona is overall a great car. I fantastic vehicle for anyone in the market for a safe and reliable subcompact crossover!

If you are in the market for a subcompact SUV, this is an excellent choice with the 175hp turbo. This was head and shoulders above Mazda, Toyota and Honda in its class. The Ultimate trim has all of the latest tech and safety you need. Also all LED lights on this version. Fun to drive on long road trips and surprisingly quiet. If you live in Central Florida, go see Aubrie at Holler Hyundai. She was awesome.

Lakeland Automall is great! My salesman Malachi was so understanding in knowing exactly what I was looking for even so much so that he found my Hyundai Kona in the surf blue color I wanted and had it delivered right to my house! The Kona is so great with the amount that’s standard! This is my second Hyundai because I love what they offer so much!!!! I’m excited for my Kona and can’t wait to see what the future holds!!! I know it will definitely be another Hyundai that’s for sure!!!

This Kona has major safety problems with runaway acceleration while in cruise control (8-10 mph) as well as loud surging to maintain speed in cruise. On our highway trips we've been averaging only 24 mpg tops, while around town it has great gas mileage of around 33 mpg. Not what we were led to expect.

New 2018 Hyundai Kona (financed) and have had it towed 3 times for issues, all incidents while driving with child. Each time was towed to a Hyundai Service center - Concord, Bakersfield, and now Tracy (all in CA). It is currently at the service center. I have a 6yr old and do not feel safe in this vehicle that has 53,384 miles as of this review. 2 months from the time I was previously towed (6/9/20 & 8/4/20) AND previous to that on 2019. Each time the car would automatically decelerate while driving, shake violently, and out of fear of further issues, immediately connected to Bluelink for tow. The car itself isn't bad asthetically, but having towed 3 times in 2 years is enough. I've opened a complaint with Hyundai Consumer and submitted it for the Lemon Law. Will see what happens but truly disappointed for buying their "top of the line" Ultimate model.

Does not handle well in the snow the BlueLink is a waste of time and money sometimes can take up to 2 min before it starts the car the 4 way flashers go off the whole time it is running so the neighborhood knows when it is running great afterthought someone decided to put an auto sensor on the intermittent wipers that does not work when it snows or has ice buildup and many more issues to list filing a lawsuit against Hyundai all I can say is Run we will never buy another Hyundai
