Best in the class
I was shopping for a compact car with auto transmission, A/C, and in $13000-$16000 price range. First, I test drove Cavalier - very disappointed. Then I took for a test drive Corolla - better, but dealer was unwilling to negotiate the price. The third test drive was with Elantra - WOW! - better than Corolla!!! And the price is lower than for any of the previous cars. So, I made my choise and now drive Elantra for more than a year and I am very satisfied.
Hyundai Elantra 2001
I have never fallen in love with a car before... they were an instrument to get me to work and back! Now I look forward to long trips with the wife and having the time of my life.

I love this car!
I was hesitant at first because I couldn't see how they could pack all these options into a car in this price range. My wife's 2001 Neon (Bought around the same time)has been in for three recalls and numerous cosmetic and mechanical problems. My Hyundai (which I paid almost $3000 less for) has had nothing but oil changes and tire rotations. I LOVE THIS CAR!!!
Very good, reliable, fun car
This is the second Hyundai I have owned, and the quality of this car is excellent for the price. I have had no problems with it in the two years I have owned it. The interior is nice, the leather is comfortable and easy to care for. Make sure you get the floor mats from the manufacturer though, or they won't fit.
Careful
There is a reason that this is lower priced...quality is not good. Currently my Elantra with 44,235 has had 2 front bearings replace and a tie rod end. Window panel on door rusted out and its not covered!!! I needed to bring the car back with 33 miles due it not being properly prepped (tire air pressure at 15psi etc.) Warrenty is excellent and they fixed with no charge but beware, it will need fixing and often!
Happy with 2003 elantra ve [canada]
GOOD PRICE. VERY COMFORTABLE.VERY QUIET. ONLY 2000 KM SO FAR.CHECKED OTHER CAR COMPANIES,AND NO OTHERS COULD EVEN COME CLOSE TO WHAT HYUNDAI HAS TO OFFER ON PRICE AND EQUIPMENT.SO FAR VERY SATISFIED.dealer and sales staff very nice and helpful.
Great Car! Fun and Sporty
We purchased our Elantra over two years ago. I have never held on to a car as long as this one because it is comfortable, reliable, dependable and you just can't beat the warranty! I would recommend this car to everyone. My stereo system sounds better than the one in my husband's Toyota! There is only one thing I would correct and that is the wind noise. Please note that this is true in all of the cars that I have owned - even Toyota and Honda.
Great Value for Price
I drive 80 miles a day, to and from work, in moderately heavy traffic. I was worried about the handling of a compact car in such traffic, but the Elantra handles more like a mid size than some actual mid size cars I've driven. The automatic transmission is very responsive in traffic stop and go situations, and I've been consistently getting 31 MPG as measured by filling the tank every week, then dividing the trip odometer mileage. Very nice car!
almost completely happy..
40k on gls. been all over U.S. 5spd fun, but handles like a big fat kid juking on a layup. couple of problems - headlights go out often. the HVAC began blowing defrost regardless of controls. took it in and dealer replaced a "module" under wrnty, but charged me $35 to reset check engine light (seems that i left the gas cap loose, which caused light to come on). light doesn't go off for 70 starts, so owner thinks bad problem, take car to dealership for what they think will be a routine wrnty check. meanwhile, the dealer gets $35 bucks. seems shady. should've bought used nissan or honda.
my favorite car
I did a lot a research before I bought this car. I had been pretty well decided. Then I test drove it, bought it the same day and have never regretted it. Most of the problems I've had have been very minor and taken care of to my satisfaction by the dealer. The only bigger problem, and I use that term with hesitation, is something called a TCM. I don't drive much and according t the service people that causes the TCM to "learn" to shift sluggishly. I've taken it in and had it reset a couple of times. It works fine after that for a while. It does not affect my driving experience in a huge way.
awesome!
I'll readily admit that I am extremely frugal (cheap?) and rather see my money grow in investments. I drive a lot and wanted a car that wouldn't break down but with all the amenities like air, power everything and auto. I've driven about 42,000 miles in a bit over a year and the car's been PERFECT. Not a single problem and it has the added bonus of excellent passing power. Radio sounds great for all of my audio books, air is freezing cold (best I've ever experienced) and I've put in nothing but regular oil changes every 3,000 miles. This is my first Hyundai but now I'm a Hyundai fan for sure.
Best Bet for a get-a-bout
This car is a champ! Quality is amazing for the price. Did fantastic in a driver's side t-bone crash...no injuries (except my anger of a 4 month old car being hit!) Gas mileage over 30mpg running the a/c. I have hauled bedroom furniture, an adult with a broken leg and been on serious shopping excursions...all seperate occassions, yet plenty of extra room.
Fantastic value!
This elantra is hands down the best auto I have ever had the pleasure of owning. I have 4 other autos in my family, two of which i paid in excess of $90,000.00 for and this little car is the most trouble free of them all. what a great find!
The best car I've tried yet.
I'm work full-time, and I'm a full-time college student. I commute an average of around 500mi per week, so I had to find a car that was reliable. I looked at the Honda's, but they're too expensive, and over rated. The Elantra is an amazing value. It's confortable for any size driver or passenger. It has tons of storage space, and gets good gas mileage, I average around 400mi per tank of fuel. They only way you're going to believe me is if you test drive one, so go try it, stop believing the Honda myth.
Fun wore off
I really liked this car when I got it because of the price, lightweight body, peppy motor, 4 doors/roomy back seats, and leather interior. Now that I have had it a bit, I am unhappy with vibration in the steering wheel at 75+mph and am unhappy with the extreme vibration of braking the car when at modest speeds..esp on downhill slopes - very unsatisfactory. I also don't like that the US version engine is dialed back esp. in the lower power band. This car needs a mod-chip to reclaim that low-end power.
workhorse
Have had the elantra for 2 years, driven it over 60,000 miles, and still love it. PROS: Comfortable quiet ride, 80 mph no sweat, drivable and good handling, has a "bigger car" feel when driving it, especially does well on express way. CONS: Although car has plenty of pickup once you get going over 25 mph, the first 0-25 mph is sluggish, some of the inside trim is cheaply made.
Small Car, Big Car Feel
This is my commuting car, 58 miles each way most days. If you are looking for a car with decent room, all the comforts (CD, Leather, ABS, power everything) & great mileage (I average 29.2 mpg, 90% highway), but don't want to pay for a luxury car, this is the unit for you. I picked mine up online at the end of the design year for 16K out the door. Plan to drive it until the wheels fall off. Problems fixed under warranty: rattle in headliner, A/C compressor whine & loose air bag light connector.
A True Believer
This is our family's second '01 Elantra. Our daughter researched and bought the first one a few months earlier. The dealer was a one-price no haggle store. While not a $40,000 Bimmer, for under $12K, it's tight, fast, economical (33mpg suburban driving). I am bothered by back pain, more so in the Elantra than in my Mercedes SUV. But the warranty coverage, maintenance costs and requirements make the Elantra a much better vehicle. Love it, love it, love it. Finally, there is a l
first time buyer for hyundai
this is an exceptional buy for what the vehicle has to offer for the money.
Car is about $8,000 underpriced!
Elantra GT hatch back -Solid, quite, runs perfect,I have owned a Cadillac, Alfa Romeo, Mercury, 3 Fords, Chrysler, Chevy and a toyota. This is by far the most for the money, and the better ride all around. get the moon roof and traction contol and abs, if it did not say Hyundia i would think I am in a Lexus. Real nice, look out Toyota and Honda.
Hyundai Elantra
I have had to have my vehicle serviced 9 times in a 16 month period. The transmission went out at 1500 miles. The sunvisor on the driver's side constantly has to be replaced. I have had to have 2 control arms.
First 25k
I love my GLS. There is nothing fancy about it, but it gets me where I want to go. Isn't this the same response that many people give for Hondas and Toyotas? Had to replace the A/C fan almost immediately because of factory installation, but otherwise perfect.
2001 Hyundai Elantra 4dr. GLS
Have not had to do any maintenance on this vehicle. Powerful engine and good fuel economy. Great vehicle for the price.
Really injoyable car
the first foreign make that I had ever bought. I was interested because of the warranty, but once I drove one I knew I had to buy it and I have not been sorry. I now have 52000 mile on it and I love just as much now as when I first purchased it. I think that any Toyota or Honda drivers should try this car before they buy their next as it is a great car for the money.
First full year
My 2001 GLS 5-speed rolled 15K shortly after turning a year old July 9. This car has performed wonderfully during its first four seasons here in Michigan, with only oil changes and tire rotations. No mechanical problems, no recalls. Interior is very comfortable, HVAC is incredibly efficient, audio is good, and it is still very fun to drive. Two very minor but persistent noises (a buzz, a rattle) are present in my vehicle, noticeable only because the interior is otherwise very quiet. This has been my best car thus far. Happy!!
disappointed
I've had my Elantra for 12 months. It has been in the shop 5 times,Ive been told it is not fixable. This car was a big mistake. Engine problems, clutch and many more problems. Another problem with the car is I have filed the Lemon Law and after months of calls, Hyundai has agreed to repurchase the vehicle, but that comes with a stiff penalty, the user fee was more than expected.
Hyundai, better than ever!
Very reliable silver 5-spd. Only problem- right headlight went out a week ago- but was covered by warranty. As for fuel economy, I average 25.6 mpg during a week of rides between my home and school (about 2 or 3 miles away) daily, and 20 mile trips to work 4 times a week. Not bad considering the way I drive the car.
Have had this car seven years!
First let me say that Hyundai sticks with you all the way with their 100,000 mile power train warranty. They fixed the differential in my car at 95,000 miles free of charge! I never incurred any major repairs other than worn parts. And it's been a gas to drive. Steering is very responsive and the standard drive provided excellent gitty-up especially in the mid ranges over 40mph. I would buy it again but the exterior of the 2009 model is just plain looking and they discontinued the hatchback.
unbelievable for the money
best driving car for this price point .....sturdy ride handles like a 25,000 up car...love it for the money
price and quality can't be beat
At 50k brakes still perfect. Ride still tight. Car is all around amazing bargain
A fine vehicle at any price
When I travel I often rent out mid and full size cars. More often than not I look forward to going back home to my Elantra GT. The driving dynamics are perfectly suited to my tastes. Not too soft and handles expansion joints with aplomb.
honest review
I've had my elantra for 4 years now. I've had few problems. I do have all the scheduled maintenance done by the dealership though. The braking is not as good as I would like it to be. Also the car depreciated much faster and more dramatically than I expected.I've had problems with the power windows and mirrors too. By far though...for the money... this has been an excellent car. I get a lot of positive feedback as the car performs like similar cars in its class. It has a nice ride. I've had problems with the power locks. At times it is easy to tell that the car was made on the cheap. My recomendation would be to buy one that is a year old , as they depreciate unbelievably the first year.
The Elantra Is Raw
Ive had my elantra for a year now and in march of 2002 I put 17 inch crome rims on it with some yokahama spec 2 tires. recently I have put an A.O.S cold ait intake and In november I will be getting a cat back exhaust. The car is very fast for its price and is faster than the civic which is signifigantly more money. I have had no problems with my car, no noises or anything. I like the interor but I am going to get racing leather seat covers and door panels. rpms I love my car and don't know why some people are having so many problems.
105K and running
bought in 2001 had minor problems but warranty covered it especially the transmission was leaking @ 95K, and the dealer fixed the problem at no charge and made all the recalls on the car too. didn't do any other repair except the regular maintenance for 4 years now. Had all the luxury I want except navigation at a low price
Great Car - Best Warranty
Good performance and power. Comfortable and very reliable. Gas mileage is acceptable. AC is strong and cools you off quickly on a hot day. Warranty is what sold me. This is the second Hyundai Elantra I own and will not be the last.
OK CAR
The Elantra is pretty much dependable, the only problems that we have had is the airbag light had to be fixed 3 times already, the driver side window switch doesn't work properly. The black weather stripes on the windows had to be replaced twice.
Satisfied with our Hyundai
We have had our 2001 Hyundai for almost three years and 52,000 miles now. We have had a few visits to the dealership for minor problems, most within the first few months of ownership. We still get right at 33-35 mpg on the highway and 25-27 in town. The engine isn't as quiet as it was new, but it still performs the same way. There are no annoying rattles in the car, except when there is loose change in the cupholder or something to that effect. All in all, it has been an excellent choice for us.
Hasn't been a bad car, BUT...
I bought this car in spring of '04. I have had a few minor mechanical issues. I have kept up with required tune-ups and maintenance. The gas mileage starts to suck after the car hits about 60000 miles. The paint looks like crap (my car is black, so you can only imagine), and the interior is not very durable at all. I have really babied this car. I love driving it and have actually considered "upgrading" to a new one. Just kind of squeamish investing all that money if in a couple of years it's going to visually be an eyesore like the one that I have now!!!
Great Little Poor Man's Saab
This great little car has been an insane deal. I've had no major problems in 66,000 miles. Minor problems repaired under warranty by dealer. Fun to drive. All the luxury items of European cars for less than half the price. I'll only sell it because I need to tow a camper.
Great for the money.
For the money, this is the best on the road today. This is my second Elantra and I have not had any mechanical problems with either over a total of 4 years. My first Elantra was a 2000 model and it was totalled in an accident. The airbags deployed and my car was flipped over. I got out with minor abraisions from crawling out through the glass but not from the impact. The roof held up and did not crumple after the car came to rest on its roof. The car also has plenty of power for its size.
01 Elantra GLS @ 18k miles
Originally I thought it was an excellent value for the amount of standard features you get plus the warranty. I have not been happy with the 'Shift Flare' problem that the automatics are notorious for. Brought my vehicle in for checking because the transmission fluid was black and smelled burnt. Dealer flushed the system and put in new fluid. 300 miles later the fluid is turning black again. Was told by the dealer that "Hyundai transmissions get hot", that is why the fluid turns black. "Don't worry, you have a 100kmi warranty, if the transmission goes bad we will just replace it". Based on the black transmission fluid, I expect the transmission to fail.
A good affordable car.
I am very pleased with my Elantra GT. A very comfortable and competent car with lots of features at a great price. The hatchback is very functional, but with a more traditional sedan type of exterior design. I find the car is particularly suited for highway travel (quiet and comfortable with good power at highway speeds and speed senisitive steering).
140,000 miles later
We bought the Elantra with 11,000 miles on it as a used car after being used by a rental company. We have put 140,000 miles on it and it is still working well. The engine still has plenty of pep, it still will reach 80 mpn without a sweat (RPM's about 2600), the engine still purs, and the ride is as good if not better when we first bought it. It has been a very good car for us. The only complaint I have about the car is the need to change the transmission fluid out once every 30,000 miles and having to use the "Hyundai" fluid. Outside of that one concern, this car has given us 4 1/2 years of great service.
Great and Reliable
I purchased my Elantra brand new in February of 2001. It has proven to be the most reliable car i've ever owned. I have not had any major repairs and it runs great. I recommend this as a used car option even over 100,000 miles. Great and affordable for a high school or college student.
WAY TO MUCH BANG FOR THE BUCK
I purchased this car because of the rising gas prices. I could not afford to drive my Chevy Silverado. I was nervous, because of Hyundai's poor quality in the past. I believe now this now probably one of the best investments ever. I now have over 70000k on this WITH NO PROBLEMS EVER, NOT EVEN A RATTLE! I can't wait until they make pickup-I'll be the first in- line.
Nice Car
I traded my 1997 Ford Crown Victoria Police Car in on a an Elantra because of the gas milage. I was impressed by my moms new Tucson and thought I would give Hyundai a try. I've put a little over 5200 miles on it since I've bought and have a few little weird problems but nothing big. I had a headlight burn out already, when ahead and put a nice seat of head lights in it. I did belts and front rotors and thats it. There is werid noise in the front end like something is grinding that I only hear at about 75 mph on a windy day. Other then that it has been a pretty good. I'm getting ready to take it on a 1000 mile trip this weekend. I do mixed driving and I've been running right around 27.
A Great Experience All Around
This is my first experience owning a foreign car and so far, it's been a great one. My Elantra has been a ot of fun to drive. I have 20K miles on it and the only problem so far has been a burned out headlight which was easily replaced. I have the smooth shifting 5 speed and get great gas mileage. My friends call it the K Beamer (as in Korean BMW). Great looking exterior fit and finish, a very functional and well though out interior and a larger then expected trunk. My Hyundai dealer has also been a pleasure to work with. I plan to by the larger Sonata for the family later this year. Way to go Hyundai!
Great car, best seats in the biz
Great car! We were looking for an "appliance" car for my wife to drive to offset the bad ride my Neon R/T was rapidly becoming. However, I refused to jump on the Honda bandwagon after seeing how decontented and bland Civics had become. We're very pleased. It's all we expected, and really fun to drive too.
Loved My Elantra
Had my elantra for 8.5 years and had NO problems. Started up every time. Performed routine scheduled maintenance only. I bought it straight out of college. Would not have just upgraded, except I wanted 4 wheel drive after a bad winter last year. Was worth way more to me than trade in value. Gave it to friends in need of a car.
Elantra
We have had this car for two years. I think it is a great car for the money. It isn't fast but has enough power to pull 4 adults up a hill without feeling like you will not make it. With dual front and side air bags and a nice interior there is no reason to pay more for a Honda or Toyota unless you just like the name.
