As Good as an Aerostar

Best car I've ever owned. 133,000 miles, 40 mpg, yes 40! on the highway. I checked it 3 times! No oil burn. Only service issue was the rear brake cylinders which Hyundai happily replaced. Have to service the car every 7,500 miles and due the proper maintenance. Make sure you change the timing belt at 90,000, and if you have an auto transmission, it has to be serviced every 30,000. Don't be shy to buy one used, if it's the 5 speed manual. I'm sure ours will go at least 250,000.

13 years & counting!!

I bought my Accent L new in early 2003. It was a carryover 2002 model, so an additional $500 was taken off of the already low $9,495 window sticker. I was not after a car with a lot of bells & whistles... in fact, I liked that it was a bare bones base model as I felt there would be far less to wear out when it got older. 13 years later I have 77,000 miles on it & can truthfully say it's been the most reliable car I've ever had. it's started in -21F with wind chills of near -50F, it's idled in 102 degree heat with the temp gauge never leaving the midway point. It handles decent on wet roads, fair in the snow, & excellent on dry pavement. I have done very little to it except routine maintenance, which I have done everything at their recommended intervals. The engine is smooth, I can shift the 5 speed manual transmission with one finger, & the original paint looks like new yet. The only items I have had wear poorly are the shifter boot, the door panels faded very easily, & I am now needing to have the foam rubber inside the drivers seat replaced. The exhaust flex pipe developed a hole in 2010, but it was covered by the 10 year / 100,000 mile warranty. The gas mileage is far above what the window sticker rates it at. I consistently get 40-43 MPG in the Summer & have even topped 50 MPG once on a trip with all highway miles @ 55 MPH. I use Bosch triple platinum plugs, full synthetic oil, & run mid-grade unleaded. I plan to have this car for many years yet.

Best Car I've Ever Owned

Have had my Accent L for over 6 years now & am about to turn over 39K for mileage. Aside of general maintenance @ specified intervals, I have stuck no additional money into this car. The only problems I've ever had mechanically were a leaky valve cover gasket, & going down hills on colder mornings will occasionally set a P0200 code for a misfire, which quickly corrects itself. Interior wise, I've gone through 3 shifter boots, & the fresh air / recirculating air level cable has binded on me twice. It's started in -27 degrees without a hitch & has idled in near 100 degree heat with the gauge never leaving the centerpoint. I have hit 48-50 MPG on long highway trips.

Let me say it seems like i've been a car a year Im 22 and this is my 5th car (the others were $1000 buckets. I'm in college so reliability was key in my decision. Saw this car at a wholesale dealer for $1800 and jumped at it after I test drove it with only 115,000 miles. I've just got scheduled maintenance on the car and it has been very good to me. The only major (haha) repair has been a corroded flex pipe which make my little car sound like a monster truck (luckily it's a $30 part and got it installed/welded for $60) The inside is clean and standard which I was going for. Upgraded all the speakers they burst when I put a new radio in. All and all good car for me as a college student.

After having this car die, and getting a trashy junker 2000 subaru outback i can say this is the best, but cheapest little car you can get. it has very little put into it interior or electronics wise, but it makes up for all that by having an average of 40 miles to the gallon. which even modern cars have trouble doing. this car is surprisingly good in snow, getting me around in as much as 6 inches of snow as long as i braked real early and kept it in third gear or below. the interior sucks, but i really couldn't care about it since it was my first car. the only big problem is that the car is made for an average sized male, meaning if you are shorter than say 5"5' like me then you're seat belt will always get stuck on the seat back support adjuster. there is no electronic or power anything, my girlfriend hated that dis-feature about this car but seeing all those cars get hacked i liked the dis-feature. this car model has a glitch in the programming that will show the check engine light sometimes, and the problem will read engine cylinder 1 or 2 random failure. leave that be, it's nothing. if you want to do anything switch out the spark plugs and wires, don't go crazy on repairs. the battery hook wires rot off at around 80,000 miles

Good little car for most people though mine was poorly made. Had to have brakes put on constantly and I am NOT hard on brakes. One year I had 4 sets put on because the calipers kept breaking and the break would stick to the wheel and burn it up, then the rotor would be unusable. Safety Hazard!! No air conditioning, no power anything. If I could go back in time I would have purchased the Kia.

Pros: Cheap. Lots of interior space and head room. Good on gas. Actually did well in a freeway accident with a dump-truck. Cons: Very small and poor breaks (never balanced properly between front a rear causing rear breaks to lock up way before the fronts) Really scary in slippery conditions. poor handling (both body roll, and the suspension wore out quickly). Transmission (manual) would clunk or grind into gears between 1st and 2nd gear. Water leak into trunk which was found under warranty but they failed to fix it twice. Then the warranty expired and they said that I would have to pay for it. They did end up fixing it for free, but not without a fight.

All, I bought my '02 Accent new. Since then, I've racked up 115,000 on the odo with 80% highway driving of 75 miles/day Monday-Friday. To date, I really can't complain. Beyond normal wear items, I've replaced both back wheel cylinders ($15 ea) and the (dreaded) flex pipe and pipe extension ($45) due to rust-through. The car still gets great gas mileage and doesn't burn oil. I'll need to work on the front end (I think some bushings are worn as there is a "clunk" over pot holes), but, knock wood, it's holding up well.

I bought this car used in 2005. I've had it for about six weeks, and so far I'm very impressed. It's not impressive, gorgeous, or fast, but it is solidly constructed. If you're looking for an affordable car that gets great gas mileage (I'm getting 30MPG in the city), go with the Accent. It has a couple of design flaws (cup-holder placement and size, for example), but dealing with a little thing like that is no problem.

Purchased new and drove 90000 miles. Most of the issues occurred in ownership year 3 or 4. Exterior: perfect with the exception of peeling hubcaps and rusty wiper arms, interior the lights in the heater area would go on and off. 2 Warranty issues. Codes Check engine required sensors and through-out bearing replaced the whole transmission under warranty. Great car low cost to maintain, insure, fuel.

I bought this car in 2004, it had 13K miles on it. Thank God I had at least half the manufacturers warranty on it. I had to have both power window tracks placed - I had to have the TP sensor replaced. I have regular maintenance on this car, I use it to get back and forth to work. I've put the average 10-11K miles on it every year. It has 54K miles on it now and it's in the garage getting the transmission rebuilt. I know this is a cheap but if you're having to replace your tranny after 50K miles you might has well just spend the money up front for a better made vehicle.

I took a chance on Hyundai, and so far it has paid off. I have had only minor problems here and there (much less than my Chevy Blazer, though), and the dealer has always taken care of me with same-day service. The car has decent pick-up, and the hatchback is very convenient for carrying large items (I have transported three large backpacks with ease). The only drawback was handling, particularly in bad weather, but new tires seem to have resolved that issue. I can't see how you could get a better deal on a new car at $10,000.

My husband and I wanted our daughter who is a freshman in college to have a dependable car to drive back and forth to school. Every used car we looked at had a payment of over $200 per month and we've been burned by used cars so we checked out the Hyundai Accent for its cheap price and great warranty, plus the 5 year roadside assistance that's included. My daughter's payment is $175 per month for a brand new car and I really like driving it myself. I'm seriously thinking about buying a Hyundai Sonota or Tiberon next year for myself.

Purchased this car brand new in summer 2002, it was my first new car. I was young, didn't shop around a lot and basically got it because it was in my price range. I've been pleasantly surprised with it. Very reliable. Has been in the shop only for minor issues (the power windows, the rear wiper and a problem with the idle), all of which were covered by warranty. Great gas mileage on highway (av. 36)...only okay "mixed" (av. 26). I love my little car, though I'm thinking of trading it for something slightly larger that would be a little more comfortable on road trips. (I will miss the MPG if that happens!) Has been a reliable car that got me through college and is still going into adulthood.

I have just bought the car but, I can already tell it was a great decision. I am getting almost 40 miles to the gallon and the car is great. It has great acceleration for the small engine and is very fun to drive. Hyundai also sticks true to their warranty, I noticed a little plastic button that was broken on the back hatch and they took car of it in minutes without question.

When I was looking for a new car to replace my very first car I thought about buying another used car but one time I looked though the weekly paper and I saw a new Accent for $6999 advertised I was surprised. I heard the 2000 to present models were 20 times better then the old models I never thought about buying Hyundai due to poor quility of eariler models. But when I test drove it the build quility and ride was soild and quite then the Accent I drove in 1997.I relly liked the two door style better then the four door. The two door has a more attractive front grile and tail lights.Gas milege is great im getting about 30 mpg.

For the price, it is a very serviceable car. The drive is smooth and comfortable with decent acceleration. It doesn't go very fast - above 65 mph the engine sounds like its working pretty hard. Not too stable against strong cross winds. I highly recommend it as a second car or as a commuter car that you don't care about putting a lot of miles on or getting dinged in parking lots.

This car was good for the first few years then fell apart! Transmission started ti disconnect & buck. Took to dealership at 85000 KMS when this happend-and they just changed the fluid, told me the car would be fine. But it wasn't! Hyundai didn't want to fix the car at all! Had to fight to get them to cover just the part (paid labour). Then the timing belt went prematurely at 91000 KMS, and did almost $2000 damage to the engine. Hyundai insists there is no problem with their vehiles even though there was a TSB announcement on the 2002 Accents transmissions! The sensors had to be replace on my car too at 80000 kms.

What a disappointment! I bought this car brand new with only a few miles on it from the test drive. In August 2008, I'd have owned the car for 6 years and have only put about 48,000 miles on it. As of last week, it sits dead in front of my house. One year after purchase, the Power Relay went (covered by warranty); in 2006 the engine was really loud, turned out to have a hole in the exhaust and needed to replace some sensors over the next several months- more than once! Had to replace the e-brake and have work done on other brakes in 8/06 as well. By 7/08, need e-brake again, check engine light on, timing belt broke while driving and wrecked the engine. Cheaper to buy another than fix this!

I bought my Accent new in 09/01 and now have 120,000 miles on it. Still get 38 mi/gal and it is one of the best purchases I've made. Only problems I've had were minor - broken door handle, power window cables broke, and an ignition sensor (covered under warranty). My only current issue is a break/leak in the original exhaust (8 winters in Wisconsin will do that), otherwise I've been very pleased with its quality. Because of our new baby, I've looked into a replacement car. Putting a toddler into a car seat in the back is becoming tedious. I wouldn't recommend the Accent for families of four, but as a 1 or 2 person commuter car there is nothing better.

I have nothing but praises for my Accent. We've owned several new cars of all price ranges and this is by far my favorite. The seating is very comfortable, car accelerates quick, smooth driving, controls convienent and styling is up there with the compact, exlusive models. My only complaint (as with most cars, too) is the seat belt. It rides too high across my chest and neck. Only one warranty situation. My rear brakes needed replacing within the first 2000 miles - were making a scraping noise. Dealer knew right away what it was and were replaced at no charge. Excellent and polite service. Had no problems since then. I get 32 mpg.

I was in the market to replace my worn out, trusty Metro (258k) and frankly was shocked about how it was nearly impossible to get a base model commuter car for less than $13000.00 I looked at Saturn, Honda, Toyota and by the time I added air, cd player, power windows, door locks I was in the neighborhood of $15000.00+ I was pleasantly surprised when I drove the Hyundai Accent GS. The DOHC is smooth and with the 5 speed tranny is really fun to drive. It rides, handles great and air conditioning is a standard feature. So I ended up with GS with the Option 3 package (power windows, mirrors, door locks). Factor in the warranty and it was a no brainer decision. The total cost was $10400.00

Why would anyone pay more than 10k for a new car, when the Accent is all you need. Peppy, torquey motor, great handling, sexy exterior style. It's a great car and no worries due to best warranty ever. A very practical logical sensible car. Let others pay double the price to have a honda symbol on a comparable car. I've had many cars, but I am sold on Hyundais and I intend to be a repeat customer.

My little go-cart

This was like a go-cart because of it's size and power. A 1.4L is a weak engine, but I assure you it has pickup and I would whip this car around. I drove it hard, but not crazy. No major problems with anything though I have broke both door handles by pulling on them the wrong way. Regular oil changes and sensible (not conservative) driving have me at 92000 miles. I can tell the car is on it's way out though. There is a hole somewhere in the exhaust and I just have this feeling that a bunch of things are about to be worn out. Great buy, great car for 8k. Would definitely buy a Hyundai again, it's just simply worth the money (no headaches at 92000)

This is a great little car. I have put over 40,000 miles on my 2002 Accent GS and have had only one unscheduled service to replace a faulty throttle position sensor. This is incredibly suprising to me considering I race this car at autocross events and have even took the car to a high speed driver's education event at Hallett in Oklahoma! Interior design is VERY good and the seats can accomadate drivers of many differant sizes.

Looking for a good used car to commute with that was $6,000 or under with low mileage. Found this 5-speed with A/C, spoiler, as a trade-in (not even on the lot) with only 25,500 miles on it. Paid cash. I was a little apprehensive but the people I knew who owned a Hyundai said they were good cars. Well, they're right. A great little compact with plenty of pep. Fun to drive and not a bad looking car as a bonus.

Not a Bad Little Car

I've owned it for 5 years now and for a 10,600 price tag out the door I can't complain. The only problem has been a recurring censor problem that causes the engine to putt and not shift, followed by check engine light that stays on for about 2 days. When the problem occurs I restart the engine and the car is fine. A little over 72,000 miles on the car and it's been happening sporatically since about 50,000. Only changed the battery, tires, timing belt, water pump, brakes obviously and fluids. Up until now preventive maintenance is all. Air conditioning and heat work well and the gas mileage is good on the automatic although I did expect better, much better on gas on highway.

I bought my Accent instead of renting a car when my primary car was being repaired. 2 years later I still have the Hyundai, have let several people in my family borrow the car and I have had nor heard no complaints. It has never required any repairs what-so-ever. It gets good gas mileage and is comfortable to drive even on long trips. The interior noise level is a bit high at freeway speeds and it is lacking horsepower, but I didn't buy it with any great expectations of luxury or performance. I am very pleased with the car overall. I highly recommend it for it's class of vehicle - Good, Solid, Economical transportation.
