LOVE my 2011 EX Insight

rjbjr5, 05/31/2011
2011 Honda Insight EX 4dr Hatchback (1.3L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

The main reason I love the Honda Insight is the gas mileage I'm getting. I had a 2006 Pacifica, getting 18-19 MPGs... now I average about 42 MPG just running errands and back & forth to work. Drove to NH & back and got 48.6 MPGs - calculated manually (miles/gallons). I am saving at least 1/2 my monthy car payment in gas each month! Driving it is fun & feels sturdy... it's a smooth ride and I never can tell when transitioning from gas to battery etc. Since this is only the 2nd year of the new Insight, I'm really hoping the engine etc. is made as well as all other Hondas and will last just as long... time will tell.

50K Miles Later

2011 Honda Insight EX 4dr Hatchback (1.3L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
6 of 8 people found this review helpful

I have owned my Insight since March 2011 and have driven 50,000 miles. I have averaged 41.3 MPG for the entire life of the car so far, which is what I expected and am very pleased. I have had to do nothing but 5 oil changes, air filter, cabin filter and one CVT trans fluid change as recommended. There have been no other issues with the vehicle. Tires are finally bald and will be replaced at 50K miles as well. Number don't lie though, I did the calculations and with the lower price and good fuel economy you would have to own the Prius for 7-8 years before it would start saving you money over the Insight.

I just bought my Insight and although I normally buy Fords, I have owned many Honda's as well, but this is my first Hybrid. I only have 500 miles on it but I wanted to write a review about this car. I fueled it for the first time yesterday, I had gone 412 miles and when the pump stopped at 8.5 gallons, I thought something was wrong. When I realized that it was full, I almost fainted. I got an amazing 48 MPG and it's not even broke in yet. One thing more, I feel good driving this car knowing I'm saving gas and the environment. Great Job Honda!

It is hard for me to type as my neck and shoulder's hurt from holding a steering wheel that operates like a go-cart or video game. This car cannot handle any sort of incline. People were passing me on the right to get around me. The mileage isn't that much better than any of the traditional smaller gas cars. My only consolation is putting less money in the hands of the gas companies. No room to speak of in the back, maybe for groceries. Looking out the back window is ridiculous, the window is split in half. A terrible design. My husband liked the car, and stupidly I didn't drive it before we bought it. The stereo is tinny and cheap, not for music lovers.

Amazing. After six months, still haven't seen another Insight on Montreal roads or in huge mall parking lots. If people only knew how much fun this little hatchback is. Zippy, especially under hard acceleration, silky smooth engine, balanced and grounded like a Go-Kart, bright and spacious cabin - what's not to like? And, no, it doesn't look like a Prius. Sure, its form might be similar, just like my form is similar to Tom Cruise's. It's the nuances that make all the difference, and they're considerable.

Enjoying my '11 EX Insight

OK, I had a 2010 Insight LX, but only for a few months. There were many things I didn't like, but most of them were due to features I had given up by choosing the LX instead of the EX. I have been driving the 2011 EX for about a month and I am much happier with this car. Some of this is subjective, but it seems to drive better than the 2010, the transitions from electric to gas aren't as noticeable (the 2010 shuddered annoyingly), the Auto Stop engages for longer periods at stop lights, and of course I love the features the EX offers over the LX. (note that the 2011 LX has gained many features that my 2010 did not have). For the way I drive it's a great car.

While Consumer Reports has just reported on this car and they do not recommend it, I totally disagree. While it has many of the "faults" indicated by Consumer Reports, it meets my needs perfectly. It is nice looking, drives nicely, rides nicely, and gets great gas mileage. After over 1,000 miles in this car, I've averaged around 50 mpg. At 6 ft. in height, I have never hit my head entering the car. The driving position is comfortable and I have plenty of head and leg room. The only down side, in my opinion, is that it seems to work hard climbing long hills, but I've had it up to 80 mph. going up hills.

I've had the Insight for about three weeks now and I really do love it. Over the first 1,000 miles I've achieved an average of 51 miles per gallon without really trying. The only thing I've had to do differently is slow down from my pre-Insight speed of 75 on the highway. I live in the Midwest and my commute is not very hilly. At a speed of 65 MPH I am getting 50 MPG. I have not yet had to use the A/C or the heat, which I expect will bring down the numbers come summer and winter. The auto-stop feature is great on gas, but takes a while to get used to. The gas kicks back on when you release the brake and the result can be a jerky response at the line if you hit the gas too quickly.

This is a car that delivers what you expect for the money. An affordable hybrid that clearly was constructed with a budget in mind but never feels overly cheap. Yes, there is a lot of hard plastic and purchasing the LX model deprives you of cruise control, nice wheels and an armrest. But still, in the hybrid market at least, I think it's the best bang for the buck.

It gets great gas mileage. I average about 45 mpg (mostly city driving) but if you are willing to drive a little slower it could be better. I also live in Florida and constantly use a/c which effects your fuel economy. Interior ergonomics are nice and futuristic looking, with seemingly very good build quality. Seats are really comfy with super-soft fabric!

I love my Insight. My friend at work calls it " the silver bullet". My 70 mile round trip commute is part rural hills and part level road at 55mph. The first tank was 47 mpg but the readout on the dash says average of 50.3mpg. It is not a sports car, SUV or truck. We have all of those at home but it is a great commuter car and grocery hauler.

I really didn't believe the MPG promises made by the dealership, but I wasn't concerned because I knew it would be better than my trade in. In econo mode, I'm getting about 46 MPG on surface streets! That is mind boggling! I routinely get about 50 on my commute which is a mix of freeway and surface streets. I do turn the econo mode off during the hot AZ summers and the mileage is still really good, probably about 45 MPG on my commute. The performance is great. I can pass when I need to pass, accelerate to get on the freeway. I also store a surprising amount of cargo in the back, with the seats folded down.

Really slow on the uphill. I gave up pep for top gas mileage. Although I have gone by the book to maximize my MPG I have been averaging 29 city and 32 highway. Needless to say I am very disappointed. The car has an odd feel on the highway - it's hard to describe, but there is a play in the steering that causes it to feel like it has a slight fishtail movement which makes me a little motion sick. I love the exterior design but feel the interior has design flaws. I agonized over whether to buy the Insight or Prius. I loved many features of the Prius but didn't feel they were worth the price diff. I am regretting my choice.

Just picked up car two days ago, love it already. Will have to get back to you all in a month or so to let you know about mileage. I was going to purchase , but for those who are interested, there is a great lease deal going on right now. Zero down,$210 per month, 36 months, plus a buy option. Jump on it!!! Paid a little more (223) per month for EX, but NO SALES TAX.

This is my first hybrid purchase and i did not know what to expect, so I did a lot of research before I set to the dealership to purchase one. Most reviews are accurate, Honda Insight is one car to fall in love with, it is very interactive, fun to drive and most importantly, fuel-efficient. The fact that it is less expensive than the leading hybrid car of its kind makes it more appealing to budget- conscious people like me. I do not regret getting the EX with Navi although that cost me a couple thousand more. It gives the Insight more features than simple navigation alone.

My honda has 4300 miles on it now. I went to change the oil and dealer said not to change until the car told me to. I could possible get 8000 miles before oil change wow. Went from LasVegas to Knott's Berry farm California at 75 m.p.h.It took 5 Gallons of gas. my daughter and I had a great time in the insight a little uncomfortable after 4 hours on the road. The nave system was great! Would like to see gas cap lock instead of pushing on it to open it. this way nobody can get to your tank. All around nice car so far.

What a great vehicle! I have always liked the first generation of Honda Insights, however I was unsure of the technology. I almost purchased a Toyota Prius last year, but the price drove me away. I have own my Insight for a week now playing with different methods of maximizing my fuel economy. The best I have obtained was 58.4 mpg at 64 mph, Eco button ON, cruise OFF and the A/C ON 58! I am impressed!! My combined driving is around 40.8 mpg. It is a really nice driving vehicle, despite it being a "hybrid". I have gotten two(2) thumbs up from some nice looking ladies, so I think it is attracting some attention... LOL! Now I am looking for a nice used 2006 Honda Insight to play with.

I really like my new Honda Insight. It is really fun to drive & I love the way I feel in the driver's seat. The only issue I have with this vehicle is that I can't get anywhere close to the advertised gas mileage when it is cold outside. The cold engine light comes on & I get about 20 mpg. Can't wait until SPRING!

This review is an update to my earlier review. Driving the car for over 2 months now, I can say it is the best Hybrid money can buy today. Fuel economy is impressive, second to none. Averaging over 45 miles to a gallon so far. Read a lot of negative review's on other web sites. I don't know what are these people talking about. I wouldn't be surprised if they are coming from Toyota camp. Car is an absolute pleasure to drive, you won't break your bank account buying it and monthly savings on gas purchases are enormous. Even the smallest economy box presently on the market will not deliver the MPG of Honda Insight. For under 20K you get fully loaded, roomy, good looking, very reliable car.

I really, really loved this car until this morning. I was waxing my car and trying to polish out what I thought was water spots. On closer inspection it was obvious that the paint was chipping in radial patterns all over the hood of my car. Worst paint job ever. Don't buy this car if you have expectations of a paint lasting over three months.

I decided to look at hybrids when my old SUV qualified under the Cash for Clunkers program. I was attracted primarily to the Insight because of its sportier design by comparison to other hybrids I looked at. Any improvement in mileage was a leap forward from my SUV so super duper gas mileage wasn't my primary goal. I just wanted a vehicle kinder to the environment. My mpg almost exactly matched the advertised mpg of 41 city and 43 highway until I got interested in hypermiling techniques about four months ago. I'm now consistently getting 48-51 mpg (and rising) with my daily in-town commute. I've been astounded how a few minor changes in my driving habits have made so much difference.

I used to drive a 300hp Subaru loved that car but I was spending $200 a month on fuel, so I decided to buy me a hybrid to save some $, well now fuel costs me $80, can't beat that. I have no regrets, I love the car design, build quality, it's all great. Performance-wise I mean come on it's a hybrid I did not expect a race car perf. The car is great at saving money, I know some people say that they are getting 56mpg but in reality you will most likely see more like 44mpg, my best was 45mpg at average speed of 70mph, although computer said I did 49mpg. The one thing about my Insight that I love is that it's not a Prius. I saw one Insight so far and I live in Chicago area. Love my Insight.

We bought the Insight new in May, 2009 as a 2010 model and have driven it 69,000 miles as of September 10, 2014. We have had absolutely no warranty issues and gave replaced only tires and wiper blades! It has a small rear seat for adults, but is comfortable enough for us senior citizens on a 675 mile one-way trip frequently to see our grandkids. Gas mileage is great- 40mpg in our town with a stoplight on every corner and 46 mpg average on the highway at 65-70 mph. This is an extremely reliable car as we expected with a Honda and plan to keep it well past 100,000 miles.

I am 6"3, 235 and this car is comfy! I get 45.8 MPG after 3,500 miles. That is mostly city driving with AC on automatic at all times (74 degrees). I also have Economode on 80-90% of the time as well. This car is peppy for a 1.3 Liter engine, the features are great, looks are very nice and overall I am 100% impressed. Whoever says this car is noisy needs to drive a kia Rio, Suzuki SX4 and Toyota Matrix before this car, then tell me its noisy! After driving those cars the last 4 years I am overwhelmed by the library type quietness of this vehicle!

I've owned this car for four months and I'm trading it in next week. Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is annoying -- when you step on the gas, there's a delayed reaction. It revs noisily during entire acceleration arc. Very gutless. Most of my driving is city and MPG averages about 39. Above 65 miles per hour, MPG drops to low 30s. In Econ mode, AC stops with engine at stoplights. Rear seatbelts get pinned behind seats after folding them up. Cramped back seat leads to dirty upholstery when kids with dirty feet climb in. Paint job is SOFT and easily scratched. Body style is typical hybrid ugly, grille is inexplicably gray... would look much better matching the body.

I just purchased this car and I love it! My only complaint is the seats- the lumbar support juts into my lower back causing extreme pain even after I get out. I've placed a small foam pillow on the seat that seems to help a tiny bit but I hope Honda figures out how to fix this issue. It seems to be a problem in other recent Honda's as well. Other than that it's a fun car to drive and I really enjoy it.

Have had the car for over a month. Mileage has been running about 42-44 commuting to work. The navigation system is not worth it, bugs and out of date database. Entered B of A, selected one a 1000 miles a way. The hybrid battery needs to be about twice the capacity, runs out of steam too soon, any grade of more then 1/4 mile, then the engine revs up, which is noisy. Road noise is not as bad as some have commented on. No XM, should be standard with Nav, can be bought as an accessory but expensive. Worst sounding stereo I have had on new car in many years. Interior materials are flimsy and cheap, push my hand against the door and the material caved in and then popped back out.

Happy with it overall. I've always liked it more than the cheap plastic hubcAPS2011 restyled Prius. However, I do not like that with EX model, all you are getting is alloy wheels instead of cheap plastic hubcaps. No sunroof and no leather interior.....for an EX model, please? Dealer said it was vital to keep costs down in order to attract more Prius lookers - ok fine but I say don't use "EX" then....i.e. don't say it's an EX with cloth seats, no moonroof, fog lights or navigation, dear.

I've driven this car for 2k miles and love it. I have a family of 4 and took this car on our trip to New Orleans and it handled fine. I have a 4 and a 5 yr old and we all fit comfortably in the car with luggage for a weekend trip. Consistently get 41 mpg and I drive the hell out of it. Road noise was comparable to the 2001 Maxima I traded in. I can hear engine noise when I hit an incline on the interstate going 80 mph. The car's exterior is styled better than the Prius. Overall, the car is fun to drive. It reminds me of my Acura Integra I had in college. Also reminds me of the Honda CRX.

All I can say is I love this car. The ride is like a much bigger, more expensive car. I keep reading about the lack of power, but I can't say that I would buy a hybrid if I was looking for power. The MPG's for me are much more than it was rated. Even if I go 75 on the interstate, I still never ever got under 47 MPG. I average 50 MPG. Love the auto A/C and the auto volume control. The only thing I am not sure about are the shifter pedals on the steering wheel. I know what they do, but I have yet to use them... All in all I LOVE my Insight.

Been a big Honda fan. Owned Civic, Accord, another Accord and Integra. All great cars. This one, I really wanted to like it. Looks: Very cute. Wife thought interior reminded her of video game console. Very gadgetty. We test drove. Right out of the dealership (w/ 3 people driver, passenger and salesman), we were on the access road next to the highway. I had to punch it to make it to the entrance ramp. The car revved very high but the speed increased ever so slowly. 3 sets of 2 cars passed us both on left and right side of the Insight before making it. Too dangerous! When got off and did local driving, the car was great. Considering the size, very comfortable.

The backseat is roomy enough for our two young children and the hatch has plenty of cargo space for groceries, trips, and with the fold down seats could fit a twin mattress, or a large rug. I-pod capabilities rock and the stereo bumps. All in all very happy.

I have only taken two trips out of town, and its mileage then was slightly better, around 47 mpg. It is quite comfortable and handles very well, much better than the Prius I was about to buy. My wife urged me to at least test drive an Insight, and that's all it took to change my mind. She likes the car too, but I have the long commute and drive it most of the time. What I find odd is that when I get into heavy freeway traffic, going 50-65 mph, the mpg's actually go up. I'm very impressed overall.

I knew I wanted a hybrid and did a LOT of research. It came down to the new Prius or the Insight. I went with the Insight and am very happy so far. The Insight is a lot of fun to drive. It feels really light, turns tight, and feels sporty. Pickup is surprisingly good considering the engine size. Cargo area is good. Some reviewers said road noise is bothersome, which I have yet to notice. So far the cabin is very quiet. When you really do put the gas to it the engine does rev high, and gets kind of noisy, but once up to speed comes right down. It's not distracting or annoying. In our first 200 miles we've averaged about 42 mpg, almost all city driving. I really recommend this car.

Perfect car for commuter and/or run-about-towners. Handling makes up for lack of acceleration and 45+mpg makes up for everything else. Very up-market exterior styling blows away Prius plus one can stop the car when one wants!

So far I really like my insight. Only real problem is plastic on hatchback broke part with light so I have to get it replaced. Love the mpg and enough room for my two kids and shopping. Wish she had a little more power on the hills but I've learned to be light on the peddle.

We have had this car for almost 3 months and our gas mileage has increased consistently. Latest is 43 MPG and that is with the AC running. I do change my speed demon driving habits when I drive this car because it sort of defeats the purpose, but the car has plenty of power when I need it. The dashboard has so much info, making it easy to see how the car is performing. My husband drives the car back and forth to work, but I always steal it when I go to the grocery store because it is so easy to put stuff in the storage area. Our dog thinks we bought the car for her because she has so much room when we lay the back seats down. Great car for the price, and fun to drive.

Peppy, fun to drive

Bought this car an hour after test driving Honda Civic. Found Insight almost as peppy but with a slightly softer ride. Car is so bright inside, you feel like you have a sunroof. No complaints about acceleration: you just have kick down hard on the gas pedal as the manual recommends. Driving position and road feedback are exceptional. My two main complaints are that the sound system in LX model is a lot tinnier than in my 2008 Hyundai Sonata and the headlights aren't bright enough.

My husband needed a car to commute back and forth to work. He always wanted a hybrid and had his mind set on a prius. We looked at them first but the dealers in our area would not reduce the sticker price. So we looked at the insight because they are similar in style and are a little cheaper. This car is perfect for our needs and is fun to drive. The dashboard has great displays and easily shows how the car is performing. If you are looking for reliable transportation that gets great gas mileage, buy this car. The back seat and storage area are not huge, but there's plenty of room for our small grandchildren and a big shopping trip. The car has plenty of pick-up and is easy to drive.

My Wife's Fantasy Car

We have put over 700 miles on this car in the first two weeks and it's a perfect fit for my wife. She is a 'slow and steady' driver who is also fuel conscious and so all the gas-saving features are right up her alley and I have to admit I have become a more fuel-efficient driver with the constant reminders. I was surprised to read so many negative media reviews about this car, we find it a perfect commuter and errand running complement to our beloved 2004 Honda Pilot (which still can move all the cargo and dogs around). This will be a perfect car to pass to one of our daughters for college commuting in five years or so.

Read a ton of stuff before I ran out and got one. Paid invoice and am getting $3,000 back from work. I got a $22,000 car for $17,000. I love it. I've seen many comparisons to the Prius. I skipped the Prius because it was so expensive. People who complain it's not quick miss the point. I am amazed at the technology it comes with. Traction control? Climate control? LED lights? Paddle shifters? I am getting close to 50 mpg. Typical (excellent) fit / finish for a Honda.

My Experience with 2010 Honda Insight

I got a 2010 Honda Insight two weeks ago. I was considering an equivalently optioned Honda Civic non-Hybrid but my Insight was only $1,500. In addition, it gave me more space, split seats, and better interior along with the higher MPG. Sleeker modern look. Drives tighter than the Prius I test drove and more peppy. Prius rolled more in turns. More HP than the Civic gas I test drove since electric motor augments gas motor. I've been averaging 48 MPG without much effort so I am puzzled by the EPA rating. Some reported Prius was actually getting less but Insight more than the EPA MPG. My experience confirmed this, at least for the Insight. Therefore, Prius is worth the thousands more.

We previously had a 2003 VW Passat 1.8T, which was fun to drive but in the shop more than on the road. This car obviously isn't as sporty, but is great for its target audience. It's much more roomy than it appears, and performs its function with aplomb. We're getting about 42 mpg normally, although my wife got ~50 mpg on the highway somehow. As long as you acknowledge that this isn't a sports car, the performance is great. You do have to pretty much floor it to get on the interstate, but that's the only time I notice any lack of power. The car's mpg game is pretty addictive, and really helps make it fun.

I also own a 2009 Honda Fit Sport w/Navi so my comments will include that comparison. An all electric vehicle/plug-in vehicle will fit my driving habits (short trips) perfectly and either the Insight or the Fit will leave when a decent one is available. I've had the Insight for about 3 weeks and I have to admit the look of it continues to grow on me. Like some I never thought it unsightly at first but I like its looks more each day. I hit my head getting out sometimes and I'm only 5' 9". I really miss having the stereo (loudness) controls on the steering wheel like the Fit. I'm only getting 37 m.p.g. with ECO button on and careful driving. My Fit gets 34 so I hope this improves soon.

The MPG Rating is the real deal!

Other reviewers have covered the vehicle design and overall performance thoroughly, so I will only say that the build quality and design have lived up to my expectations. What impressed me most is the MPG!I have driven approximately 3k miles to date, with the majority being city miles. My mileage has been consistently around 45 mpg, which is better than Honda advertises. Only in the last two weeks have I had a chance to do any serious amount of freeway mileage, and let me tell you, this is where the car shines! On a 250 mile trip in the flat central valley of California I ended up with 54 MPG! Tonight I returned from a 460 mile trip over the Sierra Nevada on one tank with gas to spare.
