2006 Honda Civic Hybrid 4dr Sedan (1.3L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

The car had a great look and mpg for its time, but over 10 years later I look for an EV to upgrade to and Honda is twiddling their thumbs. My civic hybrid needs engine and transmission mounts replaced, likely due to the hybrid engine off jolting them when you coast to a stop then accelerate. The car just isn’t worth putting another $1500 into. The hybrid battery does nearly nothing in cold weather, and is really only good for low speed city travel. Great car for a college kid, but I need better for my family.

Going strong after 6 years

Bought this car in Jan 2006, since then put 110K miles on. Had all the common problems described here: had rear bearings replaced by the dealership at 20-30K miles. My sun-visor is held by couple giant paper clips. Transmission would sometimes skip 3rd gear (happens once in a year, goes back to normal after restart). Most of the backlights under the heat/AC buttons are burned out. Battery died at 3 years. Power outlet and door lock had to be fixed. Seems like a long list but really it's perfectly usable and all non-warranty covered repairs totalled to ~$300 over 6 years. There is no timing belt to change (it has timing chain). Rear brakes lasted 100K miles before needing replacement.

I had sat in previous year models of the Civic and never felt comfortable. I was shocked when I sat in this one, its very roomy. It test drove great. Both my wife and I were very comfortable with the car. I'm the more safety conscious buyer and my wife, the drive enthusiast. The car met both are needs. We put a deposit down on that one visit. We have had the car 2 months and its been great. I live in Edmonton, Canada and its been cold of late. The vehicle warms up fast and so far has handled decently on slick roads. I've seen recently that the civic has acheived gold safety status with the Highway Safety Institute, very pleased with that as that was the 1 issue with me, safety.

The car is good. I don't understand that a car maker with so much experience has not realized that the headroom is too low. They improved to make the car wider and longer, but failed to recognize to improve on the headroom like Toyota and other car manufacturers did. That's too bad , because now we have to wait another 10 years for the next model change.
