Transmission
I have heard lots of stories about bad trannies. Changed all my fluids at 30,000. I was told that this might be an important factor in the longevity of the transmission. Mine has always had an annoying jerk going from park into gear even from new. (My 4runner was a smooth bump like it should be) Other than that and the LR window not working all the time it really hasn't given me any problems.
back to an SUV
Had an Expedition, sold it and bought a car (mistake), sold that and I'm back to Ford. After researching and test driving I bought my Explorer and I love it! Couldn't beat what I got for the money. An import SUV with the options I got would have been thousands more. And I love the look of my truck. Runs great, the higher seating and better visibility, the cool look of chrome! Just plain fun to drive. If you're a mom looking for an SUV to handle your family make sure you check out the Explorer.

Nice SUV with plenty of power
Bought Explorer new. No major problems at all. Some small issues, tire pressure sensor malfunction, gas cap sensor cause service soon light on, but nothing worse in 5 years' time. Never stranded or stalled, been most reliable vehicle so far after bad luck with a few GMs, still runs good as new. Gas mileage not bad for V8, avg 16-19 in town & 22-25+ highway. Comfy interior, good layout. Plenty of power with V8, lots of room (7 passengers) but still feels sporty to drive. Great stereo (have the 6-disc w/ MP3 upgrade)! Overall, love this Explorer!
Completely satisfied
I enjoy driving the Explorer when my wife lets me. This is our 5th SUV and 4th Explorer. I tested the Toyota 4Runner and Honda Pilot but chose this truck because I do some towing and have had great success with this model. We cart our 2 golder retrievers around a lot and they seem comfortable when we lower all the rear seats. I'm not necessarily a Ford person since our other vehicle is a Toyota Matrix but I rely heavily on consumer magazines and websites when we are doing research for a new vehicle.
It's The Only Vehicle For Me!
After driving my 2000 Explorer to exhaustion, I shopped 11 different models before I repurchased the Explorer. I thought I wouldn't like the 2005 as much, but it has turned out to be better than ever. After 5 months, I love the ride, great power, and gas mileage is better than I expected: 70% city/30% hwy = avg 16.1 MPG. If I had bought another model, I would have given up many of the features I love from the 2000 AND my new 2005 has even more features. I think Ford has done an excellent job and this model was thought through well. I practically live out of my vehicle and I'm pleased with every aspect of it. It is roomy and has the extra features of a luxury car, without a luxury premium.
