Used 2002 Ford Explorer Consumer Reviews
Nice SUV, poor transmission
My second Explorer and my second bout with a poorly designed transmission. I like everything else about the vehicle, plenty of power, great auto 4WD system, comfortable, solid, tight, great in snow, and with the 3rd row seat, lots of room for our 4 teenagers. Rear axle seal needed replacement at 75K miles (minor expense) and rear wheel bearing needed replaced at 80K miles (major expense). I attribute these faults to the SUV's first year spent as a rental car.
BEST EXPLORER I'VE HAD
THIS IS MY 3RD EXPLORER SINCE 1990, AND ITS THE BEST. THE RIDE, THE QUALITY, THE WHOLE PACKAGE IS SO IMPROVED. BEFORE I BOUGHT MY EXPLORER, I CHECKED OUT THE CHEVY TRAILBLAZER. AFTER THE TEST RIDE AND CHECKING OVER THE VEHICLE, I RAN BACK TO FORD AND ORDERED MY EDDIE BAUER, WITH THE V-8. I'M VERY PLEASED THAT I DID. THE TRAILBLAZER WAS SMALLER AND JUST DIDN'T HAVE THE QUALITY OF THE EXPLORER. IF YOU ARE AN OWNER OF AN OLDER EXPLORER, TAKE THE TIME AND CHECK THE NEW ONE OUT.

Great car to run, poor car to own
I own this car almost two months. The running and handling is really great. During the normal highway traffic, it is pretty quiet, without major wind, road and engine noises. Most features work just fine, except for the air conditioner (restricted to my car), which is bad for normal use. Even worse, about 1000 miles, the A/C does not work anymore (maybe, the motor was blown out). In addition, the steering wheel is a little deviated from the neutral position.
Worst New car that I've owned
The car has spent almost as much time in the shop as it has spent in my garage I have the 4.6L V8 which in my opinion is a POS. The motor knocks and ticks and Ford is refusing to fix it.
"Worth the Wait"
This is my 3rd Explorer and "what a difference"!! My previous two were trouble free; however, this 2002 is a "GEM" to drive. Recently had to drive in a torrential rainstorm & this Explorer handled extremely well. Looking forward to taking some trips in this newly redesigned Explorer, as I know I'm going to throughly enjo them
