Used 2002 Ford Explorer Consumer Reviews
disappointed & disgusted
Three weeks after purchasing the vehicle the computer failed and had to be replaced. The Valenti dealership in Mystic, Connecticut took a week and one half to discern what the problem was and install a new computer. The key was stuck in the steering post lock on three occassions which was among the numerous other failings of the vehicle. After 42,000 miles the transmission failed and due to the fact that I rely on the vehicle for my livelyhood and their insistance that it would take over a week to fix the problem I took the vehicle to Ammco.
Love My Explorer
I totaled my 2002 Chevy Blazer in December 2006 and that was the best acccident because I found my Explorer. This is car is the best and I couldn't ask for anything more. It is reliable, no major problems. Get the oil changed every 3 months and I'm all set. I feel bad for everyone that had a bad experience because this is really an excellent machine.

Tranny and Rear Differential Blues-20K in 4 yrs
Bought this wonderful driving vehicle new for around $29K and smiled. Rear differential and tranny failed at 60K: $1,300 for the rear diff, $3,600 for the tranny. Appealed to Ford to stand behind their product and correct these obvious design defects: Ford says "Sorry, out of warranty". Do a search on "02 Explorer Problems" and you can spend the afternoon reading about people with the same mechanical failures who received no support from Ford. Car is now worth about $9K trade in. I'm sick. Worst part is, this is a nice car ... if only Ford would stand behind it. This is my 4th Ford. As patriotic as I am, I will not throw more money into another depreciation dog with ridiculous reliability problems.
Built Ford....D'oh !
Varied intermittent problems pointing to poor quality. Radio turns on with no key in ignition. Rear defrost bars in middle of window don't work. Interior is cheap. Plastic around window controls separates from door. Leather is more like pleathor. Brakes/backing plates made with cheap metal. Rusts easily. 4 wheel drive in to be repaired. Replaced transmission at 44,000 miles. Car has had two recalls. blah blah blah blah blah. Maybe I got the only bad one.
Best SUV on the road
Smoothest SUV ride I have ever experienced. I never though an SUV would be as comfortable and handle so nicely.
