Used 2002 Ford Explorer Consumer Reviews
Great Vehicle
Bought my Explorer with 20K miles on it. This is/was my second Explorer. All vehicles were 4X4. My first Explorer had in excess of 117K miles on it. Both Explorers had the 6cly in it. I towed a travler trailer through the mountains of New England and had plenty of power. I also towed a 22 ft boat. I have not towed with my second explorer. I've driven it from Canada to Fl. forging rivers, hunting, fishing, snow, rain, family vacations, Boy Scouts and have few issues with its performace. 161,000 miles on my current Explorer and it may be time to replace it due to transmission trouble. With that many miles who could complain? Only two questions? Another Explorer or an F150?

It has been a great vehicle until the rear differential started making noise. It needed rebuilt, a total overhaul. I was told Ford was having trouble with this on the Explorers. Ford made the repairs, did an excellent job, and it is back to being as good as new. (However good that might be) I do expect another failure, but was promised it would be covered under warranty inspite of milage. That is the only problem I have had.

02 Explorer
I really like my Explorer. I just don't like how hard it is on gas. I also do not like how hard it is to have access to the 3rd row seating. Having to lift that latch and the seat is a pain. I have also had a leak in my rear end already and my transmission is starting to slip at 70,000 miles.
Had been pretty good until
Like most Explorers of this vintage, the transmission just went at 96,000 miles. Major slippage from 2nd into 3rd, now looking at a $2000+ repair. This is a very common problem so beware if you are looking at picking up a used one. Ford knows about it, but doesn't care too much. Looking to see if there is a class action lawsuit in the works as it's not a question of 'if' but when this problem will occur in these trucks. Had been a pretty decent car up until this, now crossing my fingers that this isn't the start of major issues to come. Before this I was considering another Explorer in 2012, now probably not as these type of major issues seem to continue to plague American made cars.
disappointed & disgusted
Three weeks after purchasing the vehicle the computer failed and had to be replaced. The Valenti dealership in Mystic, Connecticut took a week and one half to discern what the problem was and install a new computer. The key was stuck in the steering post lock on three occassions which was among the numerous other failings of the vehicle. After 42,000 miles the transmission failed and due to the fact that I rely on the vehicle for my livelyhood and their insistance that it would take over a week to fix the problem I took the vehicle to Ammco.
