Used 2002 Ford Explorer Consumer Reviews
Not-the-Ford I Expected
PROS: Nice overall design with lots of room for trips. Looks nice in driveway. Is great for off-roading! NEG'S: Message Center on dash is invisible when sun is shining from left and/or you are wearing sun glasses!!! Horn is hard to sound when most needed!!! Hit the wrong area on the wheel and you hear nothing! Transmission is clunky and, in my case, needed to be rebuilt at 55,000 miles!!! I could go on but I'm sure you sense my disappointment with my Explorer. In brief, an Extended Warranty Policy is essential to cover electronic & transmission failures!
Not That Impressed :-(
I have had the vehicle now for a little over a year and it's already been in the shop 6 times. It's been everything from the paint fading to the back window breaking to the front end making an annoying clicking noise. I sorry to say that I'm not really impressed with my first purchase of an SUV.

All Cracked Up
I have enjoyed owning the Explorer over the past year, however I have been disappointed with the quality. Over the past year I have had the front bushings replaced, one of the windows stopped opening, and just recently the panel on the back hatch has cracked. I was told this problem was due to poor engineering. Overall I am happy but am worried more problems will occur after the warranty period is up.
Goood
Test drove the xlt 4.0, I own a 1998 explorer xlt but this years is 10 times better than the old model, I orderd the limited with V8, eventhough the 4.0 felt strong I will incline for the 4.6 just in case.
fixed or repaired daily
The looks and the 4.6 shifted me to buy this big piece of junk, I owned limos with the 4.6 that got over 300k with no problems, so I brought this xlt, my mechanic hugged me and said we might as well be family now, so many problems with this suv. Omg. Maybe I'll be lucky, nope 111,000 miles tranny acted up, Wayne county Ford pa, said we don't bother rebuilding that tranny, new 1 $4,600, . Installed, rear wheel bearings, broken springs, alternator, rear seal, a/c gets warm then boom overheats twice... Uhaul refuses to let this car be used to tow, my sable can LOL, to all who love there explorers good luck cause your gonna need it, my last Ford
