Overall, Not happy
I bought this vehicle from the original owner in 2000 and have had nothing but problems with it. I now understand why the owners were selling. Within a month, I had to replace the exhaust. Over the two summers that I've owned it, I have had repairs done to the air conditioning system and on top of that, had to deal with recalls. Don't even get me started on the leaks! Oil, fuel and transmission. Anybody interested in 1991 Explorer? I'm looking to get rid of it!
Loved it, but hated transmission
Bought it used Oct 4,2001. Broke down December 24th (lovely christmas present) 2001. The transmission went out. Come to find out the dealership put a used transmission in it in September. We made them put in another transmission (used again) around the end of Jan 2002 and it also went out in about 120 days (after the 100 day warrenty expired) Now it sits and the finance company doesn't even want it back!! I was told that transmissions in Explorers go out all the time, exspecially before the put in the newer ones in 1994. Do I dare buy another?? I cant deciede. Good luck to anyone who buys under 1995.

One great truck
I bought mine for only $600. After I replaced everything in the front brakes and put in a new starter solenoid, the truck was awesome! The size is just right for my 6'3" height, styling is attractive, and the interior is well laid out. The OHV 4.0 litre V6 has plenty of torque to climb hills and power the 4500 lb. SUV off road. The fold flat seating is very handy and practically turns the back of the Explorer into a cargo cave. Since I bought it, the 4WD shift motor has gone out (a very common problem with Explorers and Rangers, but an easy fix). At this point, the next step is to only make it better with aftermarket suspension and accessories.
Stay Away
This car only lasted about 60K miles. It had been the the dealer many times for things like radiators, a/c's, suspension, etc. Most expensive car I've ever owned, and the 160HP engine just doesn't get the job done. 4x4 system is decent but not that great. JBL stereo was good for its time. The bad experience with this car is what convinced me to buy my first Japanese car, a 1998 4runner limited 4x4 (which is light years better then this car).
Sad to be selling
Has been fairly reliable for the 9 years we owned it. Heard some "clunking" while breaking at slow speeds occasionally which mechanic and dealer could never isolate. Recently, we had a radiator fluid leak from the manifold intake which a radiator sealant "fixed". Then even more recently, the 4WD hubs in the front started making noise so my mechanic removed them. Body developed very little rust throughout life, just alittle under the doors. Would recommend these cars!
