Should have stay with GM

Sherrell Norris, 11/01/2018
2017 Ford Escape S 4dr SUV (2.5L 4cyl 6A)

The car is ok. It's noisy, the front seat doesn't go back far enough. Something rattles in it all of the time. Have to take it back today due to something rattling under the dash. Gas mileage is ok, but no better than the Grand Prix I traded. All in all, the more I drive it the less I like it. I will keep it a couple more years and go back to GM. This is my first Ford, and my last.

For value, the 2017 Ford Escape is hard to beat. With $4,000 in manufacture rebates and dealers willing to discount outgoing models to make room for the 2018 line -great deals are available now.

Long Time Ford Owner-HATES Escape

This car rides like an over rated tuna can. My last Ford a 2008 Taurus X had real style. This is a smaller SUV. And rides terrible. You feel every crack in the road. The slightest bump rattles your teeth. We have owned it one week and the value dropped over $8,000. With 154 miles on it. We have owned many Fords over the years. Don't think I'll own another one. Quality and comfort lacking. Cargo space is small. Rear seating has no leg room.

Motors are junk

60,000 to 80,000 miles engine leaks coolant in to #3 cylinder causing the head and block to Crack. It is a design flaw that effects all 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 ecoboost motors. Repairs will cost $6,000 - $10,000.00. New motor has the same design flaw. Avoid these vehicles at all costs. Transmissions are also junk.

Fantastic SUV, great performance in eco boost engine. Great ride and best looking on the market. Quality way above all foreign made. Tried Honda, Hyundai, etc. They don't hold a candle compared to the Escape! This is the 2.0 ecoboost. More HP than the competitors!

Not recommended for CA drivers

Been dealing with fires and the engineers decided to have the closed air function turn off after 15min of driving unless you have the A/C on or air turned on "Lo" with the fan way down. During Oct when it's cold that may not be ideal and neither is putting the car on "Hi". I've made many phone calls and tried to complain. Ford's support customer service is horrible with outsourcing the calls to somewhere outside Florida. My next purchase will be a foreign car next time this is why American isn't so great you treat people like trash. Also I asked what each of the Ford employees drive and would you deal with smoke in your car they replied they don't drive a Ford. My main issue with the car is the climate control and the Sync sometimes fails having to disconnect and reconnect my iPod at times.

I had a major repair on the engine when the coolant was leaking. Road noice is not good probably because of the 19" performance tires but also those tires make the car perform good in turns and unexpected swerving.

A very nice SUV for the money . I am 6 ft 1 in. and the Escape is easy to get in and out of . Nice acceleration and low engine noise plus smooth shifting transmission . $17,000.00 for a lease car with 16,000 miles was a nice buy i thought . Everyone i know that owns a Ford Escape likes them . How it will hold up over the long haul remains to be seen . A lot of SUV for the money i thought . 7/19/21 and about 42,000 miles and still happy with the car. Only issue so far has been a pollution control that went bad. Covered under warranty so no big thing. 56,800 miles and still happy with the car. No major problems. Normal repairs such as brake pads and rotors plus tires.

Drives great, love the bells & whistles. I am really spoiled by the remote start with both Ford Pass and Alexa, not having to pull out my keys, the auto open tailgate, the Ford Sync... I really love my car! It has good pick up when I need it to, as well. All around great vehicle!

Escape handles quite well. Very sporty, just getting used to the smaller size from and original SUV in truck chassis. All is good. Will enjoy this vehicle - hopefully 16 years like my last SUV. ONLY NEGATIVE - quite surprised that the Coat Hooks will only handle a Wire Hanger (kind of dated) angle of ceiling, size of hanger and the assist handle don't allow space to hang a plastic hanger. A working person hanging a suit jacket or clean shirt will have a challenge.

So many experience that I'm driving and we're on a stop light or stop sign waiting to go and the engine will completely shut off by itself and here I am to push the gas pedal to go and the car won't go or drive, very dangerous and car behind me will honk or almost get hit me so I have to put the car on park and start the engine again just to go. When I do that the map radio will completely blank black no sound of music or your navigation will disappear. I wish I can return the car because it will get you on accident and it's not safe to drive .

if your 6 feet or more, its a tight squeeeze to get behind the wheel. overall, coming from a 4 door full size sedan, down sizing to a small suv ( truck ),,,,, that no mistake, its written up as a truck on the sales contract........ takes getting used to. the lincoln mkc is the same vehicle at 25% higher cost. my overall gas mileage is between 25 and 28 mph. not bad for a turbo engine. don't get any other model that one with the turbo engine. the others don't have the get-up-and-go the upper model has.

After Driving the Ford Escape, I kept Looking

The cargo area is ok in size but the rear seats have no leg room. The front passenger seat sits too high and I felt like I was up against the headliner (I'm 5'11"). Other compact SUVs offer more features as standard than the Escape which drives the Escape's price up fast.

Well as much as I hate to say it I had a problem right off the bat. I bought a used certified pre owned from my local ford dealer. Car drove great in the test drive and really only Looked at the driving and handling not much else. I purchased the car the next day got home and everything felt fine this was mid day. I decided to go have a ride around the evening, when I went to do so I remember that I had never said up my bluetooth or the ford SYNC feature. As I proceeded to do so thats when the problems started. I went to touch the button for the settings and nothing happened figured ok maybe I did not press it hard enough pressed it again and nothing. After I pressed it several more time I finally realized something was wrong. The screen was not responding what so ever to my touch (full touch screen on this vehicle) and I had tried pressing multiple of the available buttons. I thought ok let me try some of the physical buttons maybe that will work, the problem was in those as well. No matter what I pressed nothing happened no response, finally I hear the sound from when you press a button go off about 50 times from all the pressing I had done. It was a horrible sound and then on the screen it attempted to bring up the setting or something could not really tell because it had fused multiple screens together words over other words and so on. Then the screen went dark and blank so i pressed the physical power button for it and nothing dead screen. I owned the vehicle for less then 5 hours. I shut the car off waited about 5 to 10 minutes and turned it back on, screen still dead. Turned it off and waited another 10 mins and screen came on and to my luck still not working correctly if I pressed the button once after a few mins the screen I was trying to go to would finally come up, but still very very broken. I had somewhere to be and decided ok let me try the navigation see how that it is and what a mistake that was. Took 15 minutes to get the address is because I had to wait for the button presses to respond then it took another 10 calculating the route, oh boy was I just ecstatic at this point. I started on my journey and everything seemed ok until I was coming up for the turn, now mind you I'm on the highway doing about 60. I looked at the nav it said 0.5 miles until the turn off well in about tht distance I looked at it again to make sure I was taking the right one and noticed it still said 0.5 miles to go. I blew past the turn off and it was frozen right in that same spot after about 5 miles it finally caught up. As I now watched the nav screen intently I noticed it was freezing every 20-30 seconds and skipping trying to catch up to where I actually was. That never stopped and I ended up shuting it off and using my phone. So all in all what a [non-permissible content removed], i bought this car with 25,000 miles on and within 5 hours the computer was broken. I have not been back to the dealership since this happened to me about 7 hours ago so I am unsure what the dealer will say to me, but first thing in the morning I will be there to tell them I want it fixed. So the two start review is because the car drives smooth as butter and the cabin is very nice and comfortable but I can not look past the fact that only 25,000 miles into this cars life its broken. So it gets two stars. Hope people actually see this who thing and make sure to check the computer before leaving.

Aside from all the comfort and convenience, I have been impressed by how good this vehicle is at handling in the snow (mine is the SE, AWD). Traction Control works quite well. The SYNC 3.0 is greatly improved, and CTA (Cross-Traffic Alert) is absolutely awesome. I do have plenty of suggestions to the designers, especially on the exterior, though.

2.0 ecoboost Power and reliability

Correction I have the 2.0 liter ecoboost. Bought new now with 120k miles. All I have done to it is oil changes mostly on time. Transmission fluid changed recently (btw dealer quotes 350 popular chain did for 175) entirely fixed some hesitation issue that had come up recently. Brakes checked at the same time and it still doesn't even need pads! (a relative drives only Benz/bmws and lots of $ gone in repairs by same mileage) I have towed 3,500 lbs maybe a little more in 100+ degrees through over 11K elevation some 4k miles no problems. I have always used full synthetic oil either mobil 1 or penzoil platinum at about the recommended 10k mile interval (will do it at 5-7K now). Still on original battery second set of tires. Strong engine, good/fun handling, comfortable. The only complaint is the "autostart" has never worked. It fails in the worst possible way; turns engine off and when the brake is released it does not restart. Fortunately it only happens maybe once per month at most. I get 23 to 28 mpg depending on city/hwy balance. I drive mostly easy but will step on it once in a while as needed and it is very fast if you want it to be. I don't plan on trading in will probably see how long it runs. Will get F150 later this year with ecoboost engine also. UPDATE: The battery needed replacing 2 months ago. Since replaced the autostart feature has worked flawlessly. btw dealer battery quote was 375 + 165 installation. Got for 150 at walmart and installed myself (equivalent AGM grade battery). There are 2 ways to get at battery on youtube. For my toolset the top access was easy. Coming up on 130k miles and running better than ever averaging 26-27 mpg. Update: coolant intrusion at head gasket; 155k miles. 2.0 ecoboost 2017.

The 2017 Escape 2.0 Turbo AWD is my company vehicle. I had 2 Ford Fusion's prior to this with hundreds of thousands of trouble free driving....then I purchased this Escape. Check engine light at 34,000 kms. Coolant leaking into cylinders 1 & 3. New engine was the remedy. Surprisingly Ford had the car back in my hands in 3 weeks. They should have kept it longer. 1st day I had it back it blew an intake hose and lost all turbo boost going up a hill. Wow, does this engine need that turbo, it felt like it had 90hp. Back to dealership and they put hose back on and tighten it properly. The same day the oil light comes on, so I immediately pull over and check the oil.....NONE on the dipstick. Did they forget to put oil in my brand new engine!!!! I call Ford, they tow it back to dealership and 2 days later they call me and say it's fine. 2 days later it rains and I go to use windshield washer spray and nothing happens. I check washer fluid level and it's full. Then I notice fluid leaking from the hood insulation.....they forgot to connect the hoses to the sprayers when they re/re the engine. I connect them myself. 2 weeks later I try merging onto hwy and the engine revs but the car doesn't accelerate at all for about 5 seconds. Service appointment made. By the time of my appointment the transmission has done the same thing a dozen times. Dealership drives it says it is normal and fine. Starts happening more and more....Dealership says it's normal. Finally at a red light, it goes green and car will not move. Yup, new transmission time. Next, A/C compressor failed. Electric power steering failed next and I had to drive it like that for 3 weeks....not like old school power steering....when Electric power steering goes you get an incredible arm workout at ALL speeds. Next, drivers heated seat stopped working. Dealership fixed. Next, driver side front wheel bearing failed. Next, windshield cracked all on its own driving down a private road with no other cars around, no chips or anything just cracked from very edge of windshield UNDER the rubber edging at lower passenger side about 30" across. Dealership said I must have hit something and won't do anything. I showed a glass shop and they said it's a fault and the windshield obviously wasn't hit with anything, Ford still sticks by their story. We aren't quite at 43,000 kms yet. Next event is vehicle won't start after filling tank with fuel. Turns over and over and over until finally it starts and then runs rough and stumbles for about a minute....worse than an old jalopy with a manual choke on a really cold day. In between putting gas in it would start just fine, just every time I put gas in this would happen. EVAP system? Yup. It failed. Been replaced twice so far and needs a third replacement now at 130,000 kms. Now there is no stock and about a 6 month backorder on the parts. Many thousands of owners are effected and Ford won't do a recall. Only vehicle in my life that had the evap system fail at all, let alone 3 times. Also needed a new engine at 83,000 kms.....Ford replaced on their dime again.....and again forgot to replace windshield washer spray hoses. Run away from buying one of these used...RUN!!!!

We bought this car from a friend at 56k in 2021. The check engine light came on at 60,250 miles after owning it for 5 months. We take it into the dealer, they said it has cylinder #2 misfire and coolent in the cylinder. The fix is a new engine block at a cost of $9,200. The car is not drivable at 60k. Never, ever, ever buy a ford. Warranty ended at 60k. We bought a 2004 4runner from a friend at the same time as a car to pull stuff with 150k. It is our now our main driver and rides better than the escape. Do NOT ever buy a ford if you can afford not to. Warranty ended at 60k, car is dead at 60.4k and the dealer said "tough luck sucker"!

Transmission gave out; had to get it rebuilt

Went to look at a used 2017 Ford Escape, and it had an amazing service record no accidents or any problems. I purchased the car in June of 2022 with 95000 miles on it. A month later I drive 6 hours to North Carolina to visit a friend, no problems. On the way back my transmission gave out and it cost $6000 to get it replaced. Apparently it’s a common issue among escapes of that generation. As far as cosmetics of the car goes, the splash guard underneath came loose and we had to refasten them. Also 3 or 4 rattling noises when driving it (windows, plastic pieces ext..), and now most recently there was a leak through the third break light on the back hatch because the weather stripping had already wore off. Stay away from this car!

2017 Ford Escape. 80k miles… Head gasket blew. 8k to get a new engine. Awesome. I do not beat the crap out of my vehicles. I drive responsible, don’t speed, nothing. I hope Ford knows they contribute to people being miserable and broke. Thank you Ford. Keep up the great work. Never again after I drive this POS to at least get my money’s worth. What a joke…

Great Car With Zero Issues

We bought this car new in March 2017. To begin with never have had a single problem with it. Powerful 2.0 turbo motor. Great little vehicle to jot around town or even longer trips. Never feel cramped or uncomfortable with the many seat adjustments. Only complaint is the small gas tank. Ford, bigger gas tank please! Seems to only hold 13 gallons when we fill up. A 20 gallon (usable) tank would be greatly appreciated. Anyway, great car otherwise. Asked wife if she was ready to upgrade to a new vehicle and she won't hear of it. She was quite resolute that she wanted to keep her car for several more years. She loves it.

Ok, I’m a “senior” who has driven a pick up most of my life so going to a suv was traumatic! But, saw this Escape which was a nice blue, you’ve probably seen the color....I pAinted the wheels black and had a more aggressive tires put on it. Whoa! Actually getting compliments on it! Trying to make it look more “manly” , if you will! Still working on the change of vehicles but my grandkids help! They like the car, enough room for them, and me- I’m 6’2,weigh around 175. Easy to toss items in the back. I drive this thing like a go-kart! Have the 2.5 engine which has “enough”spunk to have fun with, the steering is tight and maneuverability is easy. I’m a music conasieur and this sound system is very nice, quite surprising! Seat comfortable and quite adjustable. Car heats up quickly which is great since winter is here, it’s Dec. 22,2017,and snow will be flying soon here in Cleveland! I do wish they would bring the front end up a bit to level off the appearance. Would look better in the front. I’m a “picky uni” if you will and I have no complaints so far -owned the car about six months, 5,500 miles. Try one.I have the basic S model and it really is fun. Put a higher intensity headlight bulb in (any car parts store has them) and you don’t need fog lights.

transmission issues

I bought this vehicle off of carvana with 3years and 30k miles on it. My transmission eat its self apart after 39k miles. Ford then replaced the transmission at no cost and I had no transmission issues for approximately 2 and a half years/42k miles. Now, The car will now lose power at low speed and when stopped, specifically in stop and go traffic and when attempting to accelerate after coming to a complete stop for example at a red light or attempting to merge onto and off of a highway at a yield. I would press on the accelerator and the engine would not rev and the car would stay still. I had to turn the car off and back on again for it to provide power. I brought the vehicle first to an independent dealership and was told "the turbo is blown, there is oil everywhere, and you need a new engine". I didn't believe this mechanic, so I towed the vehicle to ford where they told me that there is no oil leaking, the engine and transmission are fine, but that I needed to do a completely unrelated fix for $800 that did not effect the driving of the car and that is not a safety concerns, The ford mechanic told me that this lurching could be "something to do with the auto start stop feature" even though there were no warning lights that have come on or diagnostic issues or codes. I was simply brushed off. No car just suddenly stops providing power at low speeds or when the car is stopped with NO issues. Otherwise, I owed the car for 45k miles and enjoyed the comfort and spaciousness of the car. I have had issues with the ford infotainment system not being responsive and frequently having to shut off the car to make the infotainment system work and connect properly with my iphone. Additionally, the car preformed relatively well when driving "off road". By off road I mean on uneven dirt roads with small to medium rocks and potholes. If not for the transmission issues, this is a great little car to commute, road trip and even to drive to further off the beat and path hiking trails and camping site.

I have had my car for 2 months, it's been in the shop for a month! First the compressor on the air conditioning and now it's at the dealership 30 miles away, because the flywheel needs replaced! Mind you it only has 36,000 miles on it!! It's still there waiting for parts, not sure how much longer it'll be. I'm no longer impressed, as far as I'm concerned they can have it back!@

Transmission went out at 50,000 miles

Stetson Shook, 10/20/2021
2017 Ford Escape Titanium 4dr SUV (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 6A)

Transmission went out just after 50k miles. Dealer wouldn't honor 5 year powertrain warranty as it was two weeks past the 5 year mark. Service guy claims it was the first time he'd ever seen a transmission go out in this newer style of Escape at so low miles (these reviews say otherwise). Word of warning if you buy one of these, get your transmission fluid swapped EVERY 30K MILES. Don't wait for 40K don't wait for 50k like we did. The fluid burns up and turns black which clogs pumps and other sensors and causes failure. Absolute shame that Ford thinks regular transmission fluid flushes and refills are necessary. By comparison, my 2009 Lincoln MKZ is still running at 160k miles on the same stuff I bought it with. Your money is better spent elsewhere in my opinion. UPDATE: Ford agreed to pay half for the repairs. Still set us back $2700 dollars but at least they somewhat stand by their product.

Remote start in cold climate should heat steering wheel and front seats, doesn’t. Been in numerous times. Entry/ exit assist stopped working yesterday. The entire screen, radio, blue tooth crashed a week ago, was replaced yesterday but still no heated seats or entry assist. This vehicle was over $40,000 and has been a problem ever since we bought it. Dealership has been great but Ford doesn’t have any answers for them.

We brought this car, the first day there was a problem, the Motor mounts had to be replaced. After that no problems so far, Great on Fuel, about 400 to a full tank. The car is easy to understand, but power is lacking, it takes it awhile to hit 60. With that exception it is better than our 2018 Ram 1500 overall. It connects good, instruction are great. I wish that it was equipped with more standard items, such as LED lights, Power Hatch, but overall it serves its purpose and the price was not bad.

Bought my 2017 Ford Escape brand new with just 17 miles on it. Loved it at first but after having it in the shop multiple times the honeymoon is over. It's a very cheaply made vehicle. From day one I have had issues with the mud guards under the passenger compartment flapping in the wind while you're going down the highway. Took it back 5 different times to have that fixed and all they did was pop it back on but it would just come right back off. Have had to have several expensive repairs that were fortunately covered under the warranty but now the warranty has run out and now at 85k miles the transmission is starting to give me problems. Had hoped to keep it until it was paid off but now I'm going to have to look at trading it in on a new vehicle. Won't be trading it in on another Ford.

I wish I had more luxuries like Apple CarPlay and a sunroof but it has great legroom. It can also fit a 70 inch TV in the back which was impressive. I do wish you had better throttle response and a better exhaust system. I would upgrade the airflow brakes and exhaust system in the future. I would also recommend a blackout kit or option. They should have a ST version of this but I haven’t seen anything on the market. It’s basically a land rover discovery but the Ford version.
