Real Luxury Great Price (but some long term niggle

After four years of searching for an eventual replacement for our 2002 RAV4 (it simply will not die), we wanted more power, some luxury and modern safety features, all at a good price. We had test driven the Tiguan, Q3, Q5, RDX, CX-5, Forrester XT, Outback, X1, and X3. The only one that we really liked was the BMW X3, but we didn't feel like paying $45k+ for the privilege. We tried a 2.0l 4wd Titanium Escape with the 301A package, moonroof, and navigation and (with incentives) were out the door for under $30k. The Escape is quiet, fast, very comfortable and luxurious, is fun to drive, and has all the capabilities we wanted in a relatively compact package. Gas mileage has been approx 25 mpg in mixed driving. Time will tell if it will be as reliable as we hope, but so far we can't fault it or the value. UPDATE 9000 miles: Above still applies with a few niggles: 1) not as much fun to drive as I had hoped as steering is heavy above 5 mph and much more boost at hwy speeds would be nice; 2) lack of upfront cubbies is annoying at times; and 3) front passenger seat doesn't go flat which affects the lengths of wood and sizes of furniture that can be carried on weekend Home Depot, IKEA runs. Update 40000 miles: a few more niggles; 1) it still has great power but gas mileage overall now 21.5 mpg; 2) front driver's seat bottom not comfortable for out of town trips; 3) drives like a truck with a stiff ride, heavy steering; 4) a rear wheel bearing went out at 10,000 miles 5) any time it is near freezing and wet, annoying transient and unidentifiable suspension/drive train noises make themselves known. I am starting to search for a smaller, smoother, more nimble crossover.

My rental car for 2 months

I bought a new Honda CR-V AWD and less than a month later, I got rear-ended. While my CR-V was in the repair shop for two months, I was given a Ford Escape AWD. I am so disappointed with my Honda in comparison to the ease and comfortability I experienced while driving around in the Ford. Downsides: there is less room in the back seats than the Honda, it doesn't have a moon roof, and the windshield wiper controls are upside down. Upsides: auto-stop feature, SIGNIFICANTLY better gas mileage, more comfortable seats, smoother and quieter ride. I've been a loyal Honda customer for 20 years since I bought my very first car. Now, I just want to get rid of my current Honda because I like the Ford Escape so much better.

Good Car aside from Defective Moldings

Nick, 02/26/2016
2016 Ford Escape SE 4dr SUV (1.6L 4cyl Turbo 6A)

I just purchased my 2016 Escape SE (2 L turbo) a few weeks ago and have already had it serviced twice. Apparently the car was equipped with defective plastic door and mirror moldings that warp/melt when exposed to the sun. When I say sun I am talking about 75 degree san diego sun in February. Although they've never seen this before the dealer happily replaced the passenger side door moldings and side view mirror moldings. The drivers side moldings soon warped about a week later. After replacing those I figured I was all set because I had replacement moldings straight from the factory. Unfortunately the replacement moldings warped when left out in the direct sun for a couple hours. The dealer is in the process of creating a ticket directly with Ford to figure out if there was a bad batch of moldings or if this is an inherent defect in all 2016 Escapes. I'm shocked to not see other Escape owners with the same problem. I imagine as we get closer to summer there will be a number of customers with the same molding issue. There's no point of replacing the moldings again as this would result in yet another trip to the dealer a week later. So for now, I'm stuck with a new car that looks like it just came out of a microwave. Hopefully Ford presents a solution.

A really good small suv with excellent gas mileage

Great suv with superior mileage, and handling. Good acceleration with my 1.6 turbo. The only complaint is that the road noise is not well suppressed and the engine noise under acceleration is not well damped. Obviously not enough sound deadening materials were, used on this car. That is too bad as the vehicle is excellent in all other aspects ! One complaint. When operating in hot dry weather , the breaks have a high pitched squeal when vehicle is slowing to a stop. Dealer found nothing amiss and I am living with it. Interested if any others have this problem. The brake squeal was totally corrected by the dealer by installing new softer brake pads at no charge. Now,after 28,000 + miles car performs excellently. Only trips to dealer are for routine oil changes. No mechanical issues whatsoever. I would give the suv at least an A ! No disappointments at all. Up date: dealer replaced the noisy disc brakes and no more noisy stops! Drove 260 miles today with avg. Mpg of 30.8! Continue giving the suv an A rating. Ride is a little hard but agility of the vehicle is worth the trade off.

Great practical car. Nice finish inside and out. Good acceleration with ecoboost. Voice commands could work better. Rear sensors, camera work well. Auto lift gate works as advertised. Great around town smaller SUV. Combined mileage has been lower than expected at about 19.5.
