A real sleeper . . . 3.0L French built PRV motor used in many high end and exotic european cars (Peugeot 505, Renault Alpine). Well designed, roomy interior, great seats, huge trunk. Body designed by legendary Italian designer Giugiaro. Corners like a 3- series, models with 4-wheel disc stop on a dime. Around 25 mpg average. 0- 60 in 9.5, top speed 126mph. All this for typically less than $2,000.

This is a great car for its age.Except for the fact that it is still a box car it looks and runs great. i've had no major problems. It's just a damn good car.

My Grandmother bought the car and eventually it was passed down to me. At first I thought of it as a student car I could run into the ground, after many months of it surviving my abuse I found out about the rarity of this car. I have since then rebuilt it and wow, does it ever run well. The interior is very comfortable (might as well have lay-z-boys for seats) and the exterior offers a certain unique quality not found in cars today. I cannot wait until they declare this car a classic (read on it, it will happen) for that will be the time that I will laugh at the ones who called it the "granny car".

Put me in therapy

This car really needs someone who understands it. I had major issues with overheating and because of this, I could not run a lot of errands where I was turning the car on and off a lot. I really had to learn how the car wanted to be driven and plan my trips according to that. I got the car 5 years ago when I was junior in high school and it has been with me until recently when it died in high traffic. I am currently looking for a replacement. This car always got me where I was going, it might have been smoking when I got there, but it only once left me stranded on the side of the road. Other than little quirks it is a really nice car.

good car, plagued by electrical problems that escape dealership service department; but are simple repairs to a man that understands electrical issues like moisture intrusion. Connections are 99% of the problems I have had, and have never required the hundreds or thousands of dollars to replace parts as suggested by the dealer, clean and dry connections with die electric grease, made all the difference in each case - engine, speddo sensor, fuel tank sender, etc!

3rd Premier, ‘89, ‘90 & ’91--totaled ‘90 @ 80mph crash, unscathed. Fun drive, comfort, spacious, sound sys graphic equalizer, great on curves, hwy speed. Own BMWVolvo, Premier still fav—120K miles btw 3 Premiers. Fav comments on looks, unique,@ Chrysler, Premier fav car w employees. Reliability a concern but 60% dealer incompetence. Never sold well, can buy @ low $, a good value, lot of car-ABS, PSeats, PW, PS, Antenna, leather, climate control, trip computer, great stereo, full spare.

Tale of two cars

On appearance, features and performance this car would rate near the top among cars from its time frame. However, the number of problems this car had over its short life was unbelievable. This car didn't make it to 90,000 miles before being totally scrapped. Some issues were 2 transmissions replacement, heater core replacement, electrical/power features problems.

Misunderstood Renault

As the title states, I feel the Premier was never fully appreciated by most owners, or dealers. My 91 ES was a bit of a contradiction...great handling, great ride, tons of room & comfort inside, but at the same time, if I didn't have any mechanical ability, cost of ownership would have been sky-high!! If you're looking for an unusual Euro-sedan, the Premier (in ES or ES Limited form) is a great choice....HOWEVER, if you want a reliable, easy to repair vehicle that darn near any mechanic can work on, look someplace else!! Chrysler dealers aren't any help either..they'd just as soon forget they sold the darn things as look at them, so beware....

Excellent car for the cost

I bought a Premier as my first car and it is not bad for a $900 car. Its definitely rare and its unusual French Renault quirks really show here. The interior takes a bit of time to get used to and everything is buttonized, no knobs in sight. I do enjoy my Premier a lot because it handles well and gets a lot of attention. Gas mileage is its weak point but its not terrible like a Bentley. I do recommend one for a geek like myself if you can find one. They are easy to work on and definitely show great build quality. My Premier is almost 26 years old and still running great.

Rare car I remember how nice it drove. The only flaw that mine had was it needed a transmission cooler because of placement and non airflow to transmission they would overheat and break. 3 transmissions later car was hit by newspaper delivery guy and totaled. At least he left a note lol

ScraI got the car for a birthday present on my 16th birthday. The problems with the car began on day 1. Aside from the constant overheating problems it had (which after 2 thermostats still occured), the alternator went 3 times, the battery 3 times, the wiper motor went, the windows didn't crank anymore, the backs of the seats were falling apart, the rims were defective (causing many flat tires), it was nearly impossible to work on due to the fact that nothing was accessible. Don't even think of buying this car.
