Romp'n' Red Torred Ripper SRT 392, 8-sp. Auto

I never thought I would own a Dodge, but the exterior styling of the Challenger sucked me in, the awesome power plant set the hook, and then the interior redesign in 2015 sealed the deal. It is no sports car, but it is true to muscle car heritage being big, smooth, with gobs of power. It makes a great touring car for two. I thought I wanted a Hellcat, but I was not going to pay $25K over MSRP, and after driving the 392, I have no idea what I would do 222 MORE horsepower. The 392 is a brute as it is and will light-up the back end with ease. So much so, it can be tough to not spin the rear in wet conditions. I decided on the 8-speed auto since my wife cannot drive a stick. This would NOT be the car to learn to row through a manual gear box with tons of power and a firm clutch. On top of that, the auto is quicker 0-60, quicker in the quarter mile, gets better mileage, and allows for adaptive cruise control which is great on the freeway. I love the rain sensing wipers since proper wiper speed to rain ratio is part of my OCD and the auto-dimming head lights are sweet. These are the best head lights I have ever had on a car, much better than my previous car which had HID lights (I do miss the cornering lamps on my last car, though). The front seats are very comfortable, but being a 2-door, they do not have power back adjustment. The car and doors themselves are large so getting in/out in tight city sized spaces can be tough and the cup holder can bang your shin. Getting in the back seat is challenging (no pun intended), but most passengers will forget about that when they get seated in the ultra soft leather... and then you slam their heads into the head rests a few times. :) The tranny is terrific over all, but sometimes it can shift a little hard and be a little snatchy on the throttle at lower speeds since it loves to use compression breaking on deceleration and the MDS shifting from 8 to 4 and back to 8 cylinder mode is sometimes noticeable. But it is typically very smooth...get on the gas from a stand still and she shifts quick and smooth launching you to 60 in what seems like a blink of an eye. The thing will throw down from 8th to 4th in a blink and putting car in track mode makes it even more aggressive holding gears longer. The Mercedes lineage shows through with a ride that is comfortable yet solid in standard mode and the dampers firm up nicely when in the performance settings. The exhaust note is just right and makes the coolest burble on down shifts when in track mode. Stand behind the car when the engine is cold, hit the remote start, and it barks to life with a crack that WILL make you grin ear to ear. The exterior styling makes me weak in the knees every time I see it and believe the design will prove to be a timeless (the sheet metal for the most part already has 8 years under its belt). The 2015 interior update makes it a great place to be as you eat up the pavement. I was a little disappointed in the Harmon Kardon stereo. A couple down points are that some of the controls are behind the shifter making it is easy to bump the shifter into manual mode. Some of the plastic exterior trim pieces could fit better and the plastic may not age very gracefully. The side mirrors are small as part of the style and there is a HUGE blind spot looking over your right shoulder to the rear quarter, but the blind spot monitoring/cross traffic alert/back-up camera help that...plus, you can use the accelerator to clear the blind spot, too. I really think the Chally is a car in a class by itself. If you are looking for a completely FUN car, great for long road trips, you can drive daily (except maybe ice), and shred some tires, it would seem pretty dang hard to go wrong with a Challenger SRT 392. Update 11/2016: I have about 6500 miles on the car now (I often commute on a motorcycle) and have not had any issues. Oil changes are spendy with the special Pennzoil it requires and an SRT filter, but I did it myself. I thought there was a full aero package underneath, but it was just a smallish panel under the engine compartment and cam off with I think 5 screws. The filter sits vertically, so there is a gush of oil that flows back over the filter body. Running in 4-cylinder mode makes the motor sound blah compared to the full octet of pumpers. The tranny is a little clunky in stop and go traffic and the rear diff makes some noise in full lock turns. Other than romping on it on ramps, I drive like a grandpa but generally in horrible traffic, so I'm getting about 15 mpg average mileage. I think you could break into the low/mid 20ish mpg range though on a long drive in ecomode with cruise control set @ 60 in the flats of northern Ohio with a tail wind. Every one rags on the Ford Sync system, but I liked the Sync better than the Uconnect that everyone seems to love. Any way you slice it though, this is a bad a$$ car. Oh, and be ready for pukes in Camaros that want to race.

Can't stop driving it

It has duel identity, it can be your Sunday/show car or it can be your daily driver. This car is an absolute joy to get in. I went with the SXT Plus with Trac Pack. The Trac Pack gives it the same suspension as the R/T model, bigger 20' tires, bigger breaks. This car commands attention in B5, ( classic blue). I have had people knock on my door at home randomly to ask me about it. I am 6ft 2" and find this to be one of the roomiest cockpits I have ever sat in, not just sport car but all cars. I generally drive no more than 7k a year in any car I have owned. I have owned everything from a Nissan 240sx to a Toyota Sienna. This car I have driven over 1200 miles in 3 weeks. I use every excuse possible to run out and get in it. Milk, shopping, pick up the kids. The kids, this is not a toy car, it is real. Every morning I drop off my 3 kids to school. They have no problem getting in and out and frankly like having there friends say "Dad has a cool car". :) Yes, the Camaro and Mustang are more sporty but I wanted a car that shows its roots in its styling, I can use it on a long drive for a weekend getaway with the whole family, that's 5 of us. (The trunk is HUGE, bigger than my Kia Optima trunk was) and was practical for driving to the train station for my daily commute. This car is fun. Period. Brings me back to why cars SHOULD ALWAYS be driven by humans, not automated robot cars. One thing - Con. Had to go back and mention it, I do get that V8 envy sound sometimes, not the speed but that sound.... oh that sound.

When I started shopping for a new car I was looking for something that isn't ordinary that offered a manual transmission. After reading reviews and comparison tests my first stop was the Chevy dealer to look at the Camaro SS. It is an awesome car to drive but not very good looking and small. I need a back seat and the Camaro has a package shelf with seat belts instead of somewhere to sit. So then I went on to the Ford dealer to look at the Mustang GT. I drove about a half dozen GT's set up in all the different configurations I also drove a couple Ecoboost equipped cars just for comparison. The back seat in the Mustang can actually be used as a seat for short trips so I was going to pull the trigger on a GT/PP but everyone I looked at either had too many options or not enough and every different car I looked at always had some fit to finish problems (panels not lining up, the grills being off and so on) the more I looked at these the more turned off I became. Then I headed to the Dodge store and started to look at the Challenger. I ended up with the Challenger because it was put together better than the mustang, has a real back seat, its a blast to drive, interesting to look at, and fast. I don't consider the Challenger a "pony car" like the others, so the size and weight do not bother me. I think of the Challenger similar to a 70's/80's "personal luxury coupe" like the Charger was marketed.

A Helluva Car!!!!

Well after reading all of the reviews and listening how people were raving over there RT Plus, or Shakers, Hellcats etc, I decided to do a review on the SXT which is what I have. Not everyone can afford $40+k for a car, so I decided to go for the base model SXT in white, with Blacktop package, 20" wheels, black aluminum rims, 8.4" Uconnect with Nav, and premium speakers. First off for being the base model even with just a V6, it's awesome. The entire care is white and black which together go beautifully. But the fact that the car is white, rims, spoiler, stripes and fuel door are black, just makes it look amazing!!! Then you have the inside with the huge 8.4" screen, the beautiful instrument cluster, awesome sound system, I mean you can't go wrong. Yeah it is just the base model with extra ad ons, but it suits me just fine!! I'm tired of reading all the reviews and how people are slamming the base model saying it doesn't offer much. BS!!!! For someone wanting a muscle car, but who is on a budget like myself, it's an awesome model to get, especially if you opt to get some of the ad ons like I did, which kept it at around $31k. The V6 engine at 305hp is nothing to be disappointed at, and realistically where are you gonna use more horsepower than that??? 305 gets the job done for me!!! I wish there was a way I could post pictures of my baby!!! She definitely gets a great deal of looks and compliments, and again, is only the base SXT model which I am extremely happy with!!!

2016 SRT 392 is a great car

Recently took delivery of my 2016 SRT 392, six speed manual. This is a very strong engine/gear box combination, much more than anyone will need for daily driving. The monstrous torque gets you addicted really quick because the car just moves so effortlessly in any situation. This engine is just perfect for this car. The exhaust note is loud from factory, at startup you know you're in for a treat. When cruising the car is quiet, there is some road noise but that's normal for cars like this - don't expect Lexus LS quiet. The manual gear box is very good, the ratios are close to each other and soon you'll be in 5th gear cruising around town, and 6th gear at freeway speeds makes it really quiet without any drone. The hydraulic clutch is also pretty good, and after you get used to the car you won't even feel the gear changes. The infotainment system is upgraded for 2016, now you can customize the lower row of icons just by dragging the ones you want down there. I think this uConnect 8.4AN is the best on the market by a long mile. No German or Japanese system comes close in features and ease of use. The climate controls in the SRT Challenger work very well - I can leave it in auto and it will take care of it. This is a car to keep for longer than most others because not only it looks great, but it sounds great as well and the engine noises are pure pleasure. FCA knocked this one out of the park, this is an icon of a car, renewed and modernized and it feels absolutely great. If you get one you won't regret it for a minute. 7/4/2016 - Update after about 6 months: Excellent, no issues whatsoever, great car!

Big guy in an SXT Plus

Dave, 04/17/2016
2016 Dodge Challenger SXT Plus 2dr Coupe (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
21 of 23 people found this review helpful

I've seen a ton of reviews based on the higher end Challengers, but not so many on the SXT or the SXT plus. Also, I'd like to say that my opinion of this car is only after a couple of days, so it mostly is for the "bigger" guy looking for a comfortable ride in a beautiful car. I'm 6'5", 295 lbs, so when I went out the other day, my sites where set on a Buick Lacrosse, and other similar sized cars. I drove the Lacrosse, and also an Altima, Sonata, Fusion and Mustang (all 2016's). Yes, I stuffed my big ass in all of them, and to be honest, they all had a surprising amount of room. However, just for SnG's, I pulled in the Dodge dealership to look at a Black SXT that was in the front row of the lot. I turned down a side street hoping for a side entrance, which there wasnt, but what I DID get to see was a red SXT plus with the black top package in the back. I instantly fell in love with the looks of this car, but figured no way in hell I would be able to afford it or fit comfortably in it. So i get into the lot, and had to go look at this car. Not only was I absolutely shocked at the 29 thousand and change on the window sticker, but it was a V6, automatic, with cloth interior. 80% of my driving is spent in rush hour traffic, Monday - Friday in New Jersey. The rest of the time is short runs to a store, and of course, my Friday happy hour at the bar with the occasional drive to atlantic city. There is no chance for me to enjoy the power of a V8 during my work commute, and only a moron utilizes that power when leaving the bar. If you drive regularly in jersey, you know the expressway is riddled with troopers. Also, I HATE a leather interior. It is NOT comfortable for me, and it feels like an oven in the summer, an ice box in the winter. Needless to say, everything fit perfect for my tastes and wants in this car. At my size, it was a shocker at how easy getting in and out of this car is. And upon driving it, it drove just as smoothly, if not smoother, then any of the other cars I drove. The cabin is sleek, spacious, and quiet as a mouse which was great when enjoying the stereo system, which is just the 6 speaker stock. I actually had MORE room in this car, and had an easier time getting in and out of this car, then the Lacrosse. So, after my long rambling, if your a guy my size, looking for something that is impossible not to smile while driving, and affordable, you will LOVE this car. And as for the power under the hood, and the style of ride for a longer commute, the trip i took to Atlantic City today answered all of my questions. Acceleration is great, ride is as smooth as riding on glass, and the car is just fun as hell to drive. To be honest, the ride there and back was the best part of the trip (in large part because the blackjack table as Ceasar's whooped my ass). But seriously, I love my car =)

I was 28 months into my 39 month lease on my orange SXT plus with nav. I was going to wait until my lease was up and get another Dodge Challenger SXT. My wife and i loved the ride and I got more compliments on this car than i did on my C5, 1997 Corvette! Long story short. Two days ago i got an email from a local dealer showing a SXT Plus in Plum Crazy, with $7,400 dollars in options. Just out of curiosity, i went in to look at it, talked to tommy, the sales manager, and drove out with the car the next day for a 39 month lease with increased mileage of 15,000 a year for a lower monthly lease price than i was paying for my 2014 Orange Challenger. Today i drove the car with my wife for 1670 miles and got 5 compliments. this was day one with my Plum Crazy car! I love the blacktop package, the driver convenience group, the nav and the incredible technology that i have not begun to understand yet, the 9 speaker and sub woofer sound system and the great look of the black graphics from the front to the back of the spoiler. I got 28 MPH on day one, averaging 70 MPH on highway travel. Summary: i continue to enjoy every day of my Challenger experience and look forward to 2 to 3 years of this car, and going back to the dealer for a 2018 or 2019!

The raw power of this car is through the roof. The handling is fantastic, and the interior comfort is luxurious. All of this and one bad a@# muscle car, doesn't get any better than that. I have owned mine now for a year and a half and it makes me smile every time I take her out. I have owned an average of 2 new cars per year and I am 61 now and this has been my all time favorite. It's not just a car but a rare movement. First Dodge I have ever owned and have not had a second of trouble out of her and I have played very hard with her at times and she doesn't even break a sweat. Draws looks like flies to poop, like nothing I have seen before. Hard to drive normal in this thing but does it very well, if that is what you want to do. However it has another side to it that loves to be unleashed. I was expecting a lot out of this car when I got her and she has exceeded all of my expectations. UPDATE: Have owned this beast of a muscle car now for 2 and 1/2 years and I love it now more than ever! Have not had any issues except for excessive rubber use, can't help but get into the gas peddle every now and then, the tires seem to disappear when you do that too often. Still makes my heart skip a beat every time I take her out for a ramp. Never had a car that has checked all the boxes for me like this one and I have had a LOT of new cars in my life time. Everything from a Porsche, Mercedes, Toyota, Honda, Ford ect. to a $63,000 trucks. This is my favorite! (still have my truck, love it too) 12 Oct 2018 Update: Currently have just over 13,000 miles and the car has still been flawless. Still the car of my dreams and still draws crowds. Have owned my Hellcat now for just over 3 years and could not be happier with the reliability, performance and the MPGs blows me away, I easily get 25 mpg highway. Driving around the house and to town and back I usually average 19 mpg (unless I do a lot of showing off). Apr 2021 Still have my beast of a Hellcat and she is still the car of my dreams. No issues to date and still runs perfectly.

2016 TorRed Shaker R/T Plus (8A)

Scott, 02/26/2016
2016 Dodge Challenger R/T Plus Shaker 2dr Coupe (5.7L 8cyl 6M)
9 of 9 people found this review helpful

Well, I've only had the TorRed Challenger RT Plus Shaker for a couple of months-2300 miles and I must say it's simply an amazing car. We rented a 2011 RT years ago when we were in Phoenix during the MLB All Star game. The airport rental company ran out of cars that we'd reserved (paid for) months prior. So after a heated discussion, not in a great mood after 12 hours on an airplane, they offered us the Challenger as a consolation prize of sorts. And I must say I was thoroughly impressed! So after our return from Japan the Challenger has been on my "radar". We finally went and test drove the SXT, RT Plus Shaker and the RT Scat Pack. The SXT was very nice, but a bit spartan (at least the one we drove), good power, surprising for a V6. The RT Scat Pack was very nice, loads of power and an amazing exhaust note. But the RT Plus Shaker was right there in the middle for power and every options one could ever want. You can scare yourself with the launch mode, or go into the super track mode and have loads of fun scare the neighbors. When I say; "in the middle for power" don't get me wrong, it has enough power that you can lose your license doing burn outs at stop lights or passing traffic at some crazy unlawful speed. All of the time with a big smile on your face. Yes, from the minute you start it until your put it back in the garage you'll be smiling. It's true the gas mileage is awful, 14~18 around town, maybe 25 on the highway. If you can drive in city traffic at a normal speed, your city miles will improve, but honestly who bought this car for that. The 8AN Uconnect radio is awesome or awful, depends on what your doing. As someone mentioned in an earlier post, it takes a few seconds to re-index your SD card or USB device. It sounds amazing once you get the eq and balance all setup. I will advise against the nav option. For the money you can buy an awesome GPS with lifetime updates, not this thing. The interior is so much improved over the 2011 we drove; dash instrumentation, 8 inch UConnect (the awesome part) has all the driving modes; at least on the R/T Plus Shaker you'll likely need; shift point, paddles, traction control, steering, etc. Seats you can actually keep your butts in all day and rear seats that are usable. If you need or want the family version get the Charger. Also, I'm not sure what is standard on what models, but I recommend the leather seats, Driver Convenience Group, Technology Group and the 8A UConnect radio with the HK sound system, you won't regret it. I never use a sunroof, have one on my 300C (Hemi of course) so we opted out of the sunroof so we don't miss it. The good: That lovely motor and new 8 speed auto transmission, interior, and you'll love that Shaker option. You will get a lot of comments and looks from other drivers. The HK sound is great once setup and all that technology... The bad: Blind spots, but that's why you want (get) cross path/blind spot warning system. The UConnect 8AN nav system is way overpriced, buy your own GPS or use your phone. You'll almost be able to afford those new tires for the price of the 8AN system. The 3 season tires suck in cold or wet weather, but they won't last long anyways!

The muscle car I thought I couldn't afford

Bob Proctor, 09/17/2016
2016 Dodge Challenger 392 Hemi Scat Pack Shaker 2dr Coupe (6.4L 8cyl 6M)
8 of 8 people found this review helpful

I was in high school in 1970 when the first muscle car era was in full swing but then I couldn't buy one if I wanted to (high insurance rates, saving money for college, etc.). Fast forward forty six years and I finally have my dream car, a 2016 Scat Pack 392 Hemi Shaker with the 8 speed Torque Flite transmission. This car was well worth the wait! The power comes on quickly and builds like an Atlas rocket at any RPM thanks to that incredible transmission. I drove both the manual and the auto and it was an easy choice for me to make. This car has the look of the original but with all the best engineering and safety advances. The car is capable as a daily driver in urban traffic but also a fantastic "touring" car on long trips. The exhaust rumble with the windows down sounds loud and proud as an American muscle car should, but in the cabin at cruise noticeable but not objectionable. What Dodge has given us is a Challenger at an affordable R/T level trim but with the power train (and most of the top shelf suspension bits) of the more expensive SRT 392 model. The build quality of my car is excellent. Paint and interior/exterior trim are flawless. Fuel economy for me averages 18 city and 26 highway when driven with restraint, some thing that is difficult to do at times! We lost the first muscle car era over a period of years so who's to say how long this new generation will last before new regulations step in to spoil our fun. I'm just thankful to be able to drive this awesome Challenger now!

2016 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack 2dr Coupe (6.4L 8cyl 6M)
7 of 7 people found this review helpful

I purchased the Challenger R/T with the Scat Pack option, 6.4L engine, 6-spd manual shift, Jazz Blue Pearl Coat color. I've had the Challenger for one month now and couldn't be happier. I'm tipping my hat to Dodge designers and engineers for an amazing muscle car. Initially I was looking at the big 3 muscle cars - Mustang GT, Chevy Camaro SS, and Dodge Challenger. I didn't like the look of the 2016 Mustang's front end (to me it looks like a Focus or Fusion). I then sat in the 2016 Chevy Camaro - visibility out of the windshield is like looking out of a WWII Sherman Tank gun sight (too small for me) lousy (I don't know what the Chevy designers were thinking here). Finally, I sat in the 2016 Challenger - fantastic!" I'm 6ft tall and weigh 185lbs and have absolutely no problem fitting into the car - very comfortable. I then took a test drive - case closed! The Challenger designers and engineers at Dodge not only hit a home run with this car, they hit a home run with the bases loaded! Fit and finish is supreme, 8.4 inch U-Connect works fabulous, NAV works great, Blue Tooth was a snap to set up, climate control working through the 8.4 inch screen is amazing. The steering wheel seems perfect. Anything else? Oh yeah - 25mpg+ on the highway in 6th gear (it pulls around 1800 RPM at 80mph). Get the 20-inch Hyper Black II Forged Alum Wheels - beautiful set up. The added weight of the car (heavier than Camaro and Mustang) gives the Challenger a fabulous ride. The trunk is huge for a muscle car. It corners great, standard Brembo (4-piston) brakes work just fine. All 485 horses are there, make no mistake about that. The 6-speed manual Tremec Transmission is slick! I bought this car because I wanted American muscle, and boy did Dodge deliver! It's been a year since I wrote this review - still wonderful. The only change I recommended to Dodge would be to make it a standard feature: BLIND SPOT MONITORING. Here it is 3/14/2021 and I still have the Challenger. Wonderful car, still has the new car feel, plenty of horsepower and torque. I am on a second set of tires, they only last up to 20K miles, not because of burnouts, but its the composition of materials. No squeaks or rattles, very well made, engine very strong. I would recommend this car to anyone.

I had been looking for over 2 years, having test driven many different cars, reading gazillions of owner reviews, and watching countless youtube review videos. My ride was a 2011 Camry which was all about utility: relatively comfortable, excellent fuel economy, and stellar reliability, BUT...there was just no excitement whatsoever to that car. I wanted some pizzazz. A ride to put the thrill back into driving again. I finally narrowed it down to the Challenger, going for the base SXT, which comes standard with everything I wanted. Only extra on the car is one year sat radio, and I had the side and rear windows tinted. Incredible value in this base car which I got into brand new for 22 and change with 0% APR. This coupe has it all: incredible retro styling, comfy well appointed interior, quiet smooth big car ride, gobs of power, a huge trunk, and a very usable rear seat. I've had it for 2 months and 3400 miles now, nearly all of those miles hwy and I gotta tell you...this is one sweet ride that puts a grin on my face every time I get behind the wheel. I find myself out in the garage all the time just admiring how it looks. And I get compliments on it wherever I go. Nobody ever had anything to say about my ho-hum Camry. Fit and finish is impeccable, and everywhere I look there's some little extra that Dodge added to make this one special car, like the Challenger silhouette racing across the bottom of the windshield, or the carpeting on the back of the seat belt latches. There's only a couple of things not offered that I'd like to see: auto up windows and attachments for a cargo net in the trunk. Update 1/4/18: Have a bit over 20,000 miles on the Challenger now. Zero mechanical issues to date with total maintenance cost of $87.41 for 2 oil changes, no squeaks or rattles, mpg has improved over time (now getting 30+ mpg on the hwy). Just a great looking, very comfortable, and fun to drive car. No regrets at all regards this purchase. Update 7/5/18: 25, 221 miles on the odometer. Zero mechanical issues/maintenance costs since last update. Love this car! Update 1/7/19: 38.206 miles on the odometer. Zero mechanical issues since last update. Had dealer perform a cruise control safety recall. Fix was to reprogram the power control module. The "issue" that warranted the recall never manifested in my vehicle. Total time at the dealership for this recall, with appointment, was 30 minutes, including a car wash. Total maintenance cost since last update was $107.28 (oil and filter change, replace engine air filter, replace cabin air filter). At low speeds on rough roads I'm aware of a sort of friction noise in the drivers side door, probably the window against the rubber seal (frameless door windows) as the body flexes. Sound completely disappears at hwy speeds. Bulk of recent miles have been road trips. Two 4,500 mile round trips, and one 1,500 mile round trip. On one of the 4,500 mile runs I kept track and averaged 30.6 mpg over the entire trip. That was 95+% hwy driving, a mix of 2 lane and interstate, elevations from 1200 to over 11,000. I am still super stoked by how comfortably and effortlessly the Challenger eats up the miles. I said "awesome ride" back when I first reviewed my Challenger, and that impression is now cemented in my brain. Update 7/7/19: 42,887 miles on the odometer. Zero mechanical problems since last update. Total maintenance cost $26.05 for an oil and filter change. Tires nearly worn down to needing replacement. I tracked down the noise I mentioned in the previous update. It was the plastic B pillar trim piece rubbing against the plastic trim piece at the bottom of the rear window on the drivers side. A very small piece of foam rubber strategically wedged between the two trim pieces has quieted that issue. I sometimes travel a deserted 10 mile stretch of 2 lane blacktop on the indian reservation in Pinal County late at night. I love to open the Challenger up for a 100 mph cruise over that stretch every chance I get. The Challenger with its' Mercedes E-Class underpinnings that were designed for autobahn cruising handles like a dream at that speed: poised, refined, comfortable. I love my Challenger. Update 1-16-2020: 48,740 miles on the odometer. Zero problems since previous update. Maintenance cost was a set of new tires at around 46,000 miles. Update 7-17-2020: 52,922 miles on the odometer. Car remains problem free. Maintenance cost since last update was $46.09 for an oil and filter change. Update 7-21-21: Edmunds requested an update, so here it is. I traded this 2016 Challenger in for a brand new 2020 Challenger in Oct 2020. It had just shy of 55,000 trouble free miles on it, with nothing more done to it than manufacturer recommended maintenance, the recall mentioned in an earlier update, and a set of new tires. The dealer I worked with put this 2016 Challenger on their lot as a certified pre-owned vehicle, and it sold quickly.

The car is exactly what I was looking for,yes it is a big car, weights more than a sports car but this is as close as you are going to get to a classic muscle car. Big inside, roomy, comfortable. The technology is there and this thing turns heads. Shaker hood I think makes people get out of the way when you are coming, this car just looks fast no matter what speed you are going. **update: still feel the same, awesome car. Yes, I would trade it for the scat pack but I'm happy for the purchase either way. **Second update: Still feel the same, the only thing I would like to see changed is the sun visors, not big enough to protect you from the sun and each time I need to use them at a weird angle.

I bought the scat pack shaker and I have to tell you this is a blast to drive, I've owned many cars including several corvettes and Camaros, love my GM LS motors but I can honestly say the Challenger gives me great pleasure to drive. I have no regrets in my purchase and feel that Dodge has done a great job balancing power, looks and comfort. Love it

My 2016 R/T Plus A8: two years later.

2016 Dodge Challenger R/T Plus 2dr Coupe (5.7L 8cyl 6M)
17 of 21 people found this review helpful

I am updating this review after having owned my R/T Plus A8 for just over two years. My rating has dropped from five to three and a half stars (Edmunds doesn't allow half-star ratings so my rating looks like three stars, but it's really three and a half). I've put my edits right below my original comments so that you can see how my opinion of the car has changed (along with my enthusiasm). Is it a fun and comfortable retro-styled muscle car with modern features? Yes. Is it a good buy for the money? Well. . . The edited review begins below: ORIGINAL: Dodge knocked one out of the park with this car! Is it perfect? No. Is it a comfortable, easy to enjoy, good daily driver--and a kick in the pants when you stomp the pedal? Hell, yes! EDIT: Definitely not a home run. More like a double with the runner reaching third on an error. I rented a 6-cylinder version of this car when mine was in the shop. I had the six for a week and was surprised by how often I was pleased with the car so, when I got my car back, I traded it in and picked up a Challenger with a little more pep, a 2016 R/T Plus (which has the 5.7L (345 cid) motor). What surprised me most (after the yee-haw! acceleration) was how thoughtfully laid out and tastefully appointed the interior was. The center console is decidedly non-egalitarian--it's slanted towards the driver (as it should be, this is a driver's car, not a minivan), the cup holders have soft lighting around the rims to help you see them at night, the information center is a snap to learn how to use, and the Driver Information Display cluster (between the tach and the speedometer) is similarly easy to use. And when you're resting your hand on the gear shift lever, the center console controls are literally at your fingertips--brilliant! EDIT: All of the above still holds true, but I also learned that the build quality is average--at best. My car has 37,000 miles on it and, so far, the inner panel on the driver's side door has come partially loose, there is significant wind noise on the driver's side (this may be the result of the loose panel), and there is a slight wheeze behind the passenger air vent when I run the heater. Also, the sheet metal and paint on the car are both razor thin. I was really surprised (and somewhat concerned) when I took my car through a car wash and saw how much the hood flexes underneath the hot air blowers, and I find that the paint is subject to chipping rather easily. Finally, I noticed that the passenger side tail lights do not line up. The inner part is higher than the outer part by about an eighth of an inch to a quarter of an inch. It doesn't sound like much, but you see it immediately and it looks really cheap. Dodge's quality in certain areas really is subpar because there is no reason for any of the above to be issues on a $40,000 automobile. ORIGINAL: The torque (which most of us drive) and the horsepower (which some of us drive) are both a seriously legitimate kick in the pants. And I have the SMALLEST and least powerful V-8. Zero to 60 in less than six seconds, zero to 100 in about 12, and zero to goofy grin in nothing flat. EDIT: I have since learned that newer Accords (and many other modern sedans, coupes, CUVs, SUVs, and minivans (!), i.e., virtually all cars on the road) can hit 60 mph from a dead stop in about six seconds. If I hadn't had a supercharger installed in my car, there would be no grin, goofy or otherwise. Relative to its image and reputation, this car is sloooow. ORIGINAL: The steering is surprisingly responsive and the car feels more nimble than it looks, which is good--because the car is big. Really big. And the hood feels a mile long. I could go on and on about this car but, for someone like me, who learned how to drive on land yachts and grew up driving V-8s, this car is a delicious throwback. It's not without its faults (the gas mileage is just plain bad and the rear pillars make changing lanes an adventure) and it's not for everyone, certainly, but if you've ever had even a secret liking for muscle cars, you owe it to yourself to check out the Challenger. Especially if you're a middle-aged driver who also wants some creature comforts like heated seats, honest to goodness back seats, a usable trunk, and a comfy ride. EDIT: After two years, I would say that responsiveness is in the eye of the beholder. My Infiniti Q60S is responsive. The Challenger? Meh. Not so much. This car will turn when I ask it to, but it has just too much bulk to call it responsive. ORIGINAL: I'm actually a little embarrassed by how much I wound up loving this car--but, boy, do I! Well done, Dodge-FCA! Well done! EDIT: I'm no longer embarrassed--well, maybe a little, but only by how much I gushed over this car in my original review. Would I buy it again? Maybe. Maybe not.

I traded in this past week a Dodge Challenger SXT for a R/T. This is like night and day as far as power, after owning a SXT which is a quick car at 305 HP big difference when you add on 70 HP. Just the sound of that HEMI engine is enough for any car enthusiast to know they are driving a real muscle car. If your ego really needs a SRT-8 or a Hell Cat and your wallet can afford that kind of car, well go for it. But lets face it for daily driving you don't need either one of those two cars. The R/T can pretty much blow the doors off any car on the street today. I bought the manual 6 speed, but you can chirp through the gears no sweat. Any fool that thinks they want to blow you off at a stop light, just do what I do, look at their car as your passing them, and then look at them, they wish......lol Trust me you wont go wrong with a R/T. That car has probably more power then you will ever need.

Had a 2015 Challenger SRT 392 and traded it for a 2016 Hellcat version. liked the 392 but love the Hellcat. Still breaking it in but it runs smoothly and very comfortable. I like the automatic transmission. The sound is louder by about a third over the 392, but that said, both sound great. The navigation is easy to operate and gives turn by turn directions better than any other car including Lexus and Mercedes. Love the car. I have 4000 miles on the car now. Have had no problems and like the car even more than before. I usually trade cars every year, but I think I may just keep this one. I have 7000 miles now and the car is problem free. Still glad I bought it.

I removed the ugly stripes on the trunk and had the spoiler painted Purple also. Looks great. I've only had it a few days but this is my 3rd Challenger and they were all very nice cars.

Be forewarned, this is not the family minivan. The car is beyond fun to drive and going from 0 to 60 is just the beginning. On the highway there is no problem pushing the gas peddle and being pinned to your seat. There is a lot of engine and exhaust noise inside the car, but that is no secret and Dodge list that as a positive point. When driving you need to constantly be aware of the 707 HP under the hood. A little too much gas and the rear wheels break lose and start to spin. Taking the car into sport and track mode will only cause you to lose traction even quicker. Great car to own and drive.

Hi everyone: My 2016 red Hellcat is really exciting, and sometimes a bit much to handle, so if you are going to purchase this super vehicle, do not to expect an MPG any more than 10.7 miles per gallon unless you are in ECCO Mode. Having said that, Dodge has built one of the most exciting vehicles ever produced for the average working class person. I am retired after 45 years in Law Enforcement, this Hellcat makes me feel like a kid again. How do you put a price on something like that!! Dodge really got it right!! Thank You Dodge SRT Team. Love everything about this car. Fun to drive and comfy. Next time I might (might) skip the moonroof for extra head room -and I would pay the extra $ for the package that includes blind spot detection, etc as the challenger does have some blind spots and a small, elevated rear windshield. -minor complaints on an otherwise outstanding vehicle!

This car is awesome! Hands down winner when test driving camaro and mustang. No issues at all with the car except the TERRIBLE head rest sets WAY back, totally unusable to taller drivers that have to tilt the seat for head room and the fact to get the BEE on the splash screen on start up you have to purchase a package. THEY ARE ALL SCAT PACKS! Shaker comes with custom Shaker badging on seats, and splash screen. This is the first car i have not wanted to customize the hell out of. Near perfect the way it is. The Alpine stereo is ok, NOT great, but I would spend the difference for HK system.

I bought this Dodge Challenger after driving Mustang GT for the past 20 years. Since this model has the large 392 HEMI, it was a step up in performance as well as driving comfort. I'm a big fan of the "69" and "70" Mach I and the Dodge muscle cars from that era. Being able to capture that aggressive look with the bonus of the classic Shaker Scoop in a modern car convinced me it was time for a change. So far the car has had no issues and I look forward to driving it every day!

Having owned a Dodge Challenger RT Scat Pack for almost three years I have to say this car is the fastest one I’ve ever owned. Just punch the gas peddle at any speed and the car just picks up and pulls and keeps pulling. It’s also one of the most comfortable vehicles I’ve ever owned. Trunk space is very large too. My only gripes about my car is the rear backup camera went out after 3000 miles, a glitch in the U/Connect updates and two recalls. Quality control issues are one problem I’ve had with my 2016 Challenger. The rubber molding around the driver’s side door isn’t even and doesn’t line up properly. Also, the plastic rear lights don’t line up as there’s a very noticeable gap. The plastic lights also look cheap and scratches easily. It’s not a perfect car and it could still use better quality parts and I don’t feel the car is too reliable. Update: Sold the car after having too many issue with it.

This is a BIG car, but my 392 has more than enough power to get moving. It's been a while since I drove the R/T, but I recall it's no slouch either. The interior is of a clean design, spacious and comfortable. Plenty of technology, without it being a distraction from the fact that this is a muscle car. Maybe the two biggest "problems" are: (1) visibility, which is mitigated by the backup camera and blind spot warning system; and (2) road noise (I just got out of an Infiniti G35), but you don't buy a Challenger looking to minimize road noise. Overall, I love the car. It's a modern car that hasn't forgotten its also a muscle car.

Every one is built with rusted metal parts

Before you buy this car please check the metal that holds up the wheels. I found rust and corrosion on the front wheel screws and the metal parts that went to the wheels on both sides. I asked the salesman about it and he said it was superficial. I took the car home and I found that they had painted over the metal in black but there was rust peaking out. It was bad rust which crumbled in my hands. When I took it back to the dealer I found that all of the other challengers had rust in the same places. I went to 2 more dealers and I found the same rust on all of the Challengers. Look under the front wheels and you will see the rust. I think they are making the challengers with rusted metal frames.

2016 R/T Plus Shaker

I’m the second owner of a Granite Grey R/T plus shaker 6sp. Overall an awesome car. The leather seats are really comfortable for long trips. Normal maintenance isn’t too expensive but tires($1000) and trans/diff ($650) are going to set you back a little. The balance of the 5.7 and bilstein suspension round the car out well. I’ve passed on the outside doing 80 on an off ramp and the car wanted more. It’s not the fastest out there but drives like a top performer.

too much power for the stock tires you need a wide body to be able to put some wider tires and adding a widebody kit isn't for me the cost of the kit then the installation cost and paint then wider wheels and tires on a 2016b hellcat doesn't make cense so I traded my 2016 hellcat for a new 2021 scat pack r/t with the shaker hood and I'm very happy

I was not in the market for a new car. My wife and I spent 8 days at a hotel overlooking the Challenger / Charger lot at Dodgeland in Columbia SC last year. Morning after morning gazing out the window brushing my teeth I was drawn to the old school appearance of the Challenger. On day 6 after breakfast I suggested we walk off breakfast at that car lot behind us. We're not going to buy one, we're just looking... Well we came across a Scat Pack that grabbed our attention and asked for a test drive. First let me tell you, when the salesman fired it up with the remote start, oh my! My heart was racing. My wife took the first turn behind the wheel and barked the tires pulling out of the parking lot. The acceleration was unbelievable. The 8 speed transmission smooth and even more impressive down shifting when braking. When I got my turn I was very impressed with the steering and handling. The only negative that came from the test drive was the blind spots. I have become spoiled with the blind spot monitor on my F150 and was a feature that would be necessary for this vehicle. Unfortunately the only Challenger they had with that feature was an R/T. When the salesman fired it up for us to look at it, it was quiet, too quiet. Mary motioned with both hands for him pull that weak [non-permissible content removed] back into it's parking space. So now we were hooked (line and sinker) and the search was on! Monday we left for our return to KY. Checking dealer inventories I found some promising listings in Louisville. Well, we drove straight to the dealership and arrived minutes before closing and met the salesman that we had called hours earlier. Walking the lot we looked at the 2017's without excitement. Ready to call it a day the salesman remembered a 16 that was at an axillary lot with blind spot monitor. We followed him to the lot and pulled up to this beautiful beast. It was all I could do to keep a poker face for negotiations. What we had chanced upon was a 16 Challenger 392 Hemi Scat Pack Shaker with Blind Spot Monitor, Adaptive Speed Control, Sunroof, color Maximum Steel. Over the years we have owned Cameros, Mustangs, Chevelles, 442s, and none come close to the performance of Sweet Thing! Drive it, you'll love it!!

This car is awesome! Tons of power that will not disappoint. I have the Shaker R/T and I love this car. I just leased it last week, tons of room and very comfortable. It is not the most quiet ride out there but for me personally I do not want a quiet ride. If you want power, looks, and performance get this car! The Shaker hood scoop is a very cool touch too.

We leased with option to buy and I'm convinced that this is the best car I ever owned! I have had a new Gt Mustang in 2005 and this car has a lot more room, rides like a Lincoln on the highway, mileage ok so if I wanted better I should have got a 4 or 6 banger not interested! I road in the Camero n Mustang really close quarters and not rated as a 5 star in a accident like the Challenger is! Hemi Shaker plenty of get up n go for this 72 yr old 2nd child hood guy! Comfort up the U know what and the interior the cabin great for us! We are going to buy out after lease or maybe lease another one if they make them in 3 years from now?

This is the third challenger we have owned, kept upgrading from sxt, to rt and finally to our 392 scat pack shaker. I have always had a love affair with muscle cars, so my husband got me this car for my birthday. Don't be shocked that a lady drives a car like this, some women appreciate fine cars more than a lot of men do! I have owned mustangs and camaros, but as far as modern 'muscle' cars go the challenger has my heart. I love the retro styling. Whoever says challengers are slow cars clearly hasn't driven one! The 392 scat pack shaker is badged as a RT, but has the engine of an SRT. The 485 horsepower is awesome on acceleration and Lord have mercy the rumble of the engine. I love the looks I get when I start the car. I have even set off car alarms before when starting the car, yes it's that loud! I have a friend who has a ZL1 camaro and when she heard my car start she asked if my exhaust was stock (which it is) because it was impressively loud....louder than her aftermarket exhaust lol. So if you want a head turning, retro looking, loud, put you back in your seat on acceleration fast car then may I suggest the 392 scat pack shaker? It's a awesome car that you will love to drive!

I love driving my SRT more each day. You need to drive it differently than driving a normal car due to the outstanding acceleration. It takes some getting used to. If you select the Jazz Blue color as I did, you will get more compliments on the color than the car. If you choose to purchase this car, I hope you have as much fun as I have had so far! It always puts a smile on my face.

Great car. Wider doors (2 door coupe) great performance and mileage, really nice electronics, 275 watt stereo, Bluetooth, navigation and back up camera. Very nice leather (heated and cooled) nice sized trunk, moonroof too. Wanted a retro look with all the modern conveniences for daily or vacation travel. Challenger nailed it!

A Lot Of Bang For Your Buck

Barry, 10/15/2018
2016 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack 2dr Coupe (6.4L 8cyl 6M)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

Bought my 2016 Challenger R/T Scat Pack in October 2016 with 450 miles on the odometer. With the exception of my backup camera going bad at 2000 miles the car has had no real problems. The car is like a boat but it handles quite well and far better than one might expect. The big thirsty 6.4 liter engine is powerful and you'll find yourself stopping at the gas station quite frequently if you drive the car the way it was meant to be driven - fast! But then who buys an R/T Scat Pack for it's gas milage? Interior wise there is an abundance of hard plastics which is pretty much the norm for most cars built today. My major complaint is the rear tailight section which is cheap plastic and can be easily scratched. Lots of cost cutting on Dodge's part. It's hard to believe even the expensive Hellcat get's the same cheap plastic lights in the back. Ride quality with the Bilstein suspension is poor in my opinion and quite stiff and over bumpy roads it can be extremely annoying. If you prefer a softer ride buy the regular R/T or an SRT with it's adjustable suspension. On the plus side are the four piston Brembo brakes which are excellent. Also, the active exhaust sounds great with it's bark at startup and it's burbles when accelerating. The Challenger Scat Pack is a powerful muscle car that still needs a lot of improvement but can definitely hold it's own against most Mustang 5.0's, Camaro SS's and various BMW's. The upgraded Alpine sound system is decent but has no CD player. Apparently Dodge has done away with offering a CD player in their cars after the 2014 models. Chevy has also done away with offering a CD player in their cars. You can still get one in most Ford models.

In LOVE with my Challenger!

I hadn't purchased a new car in almost a decade. My old car had been paid off for several years, and while I really loved not having a car payment, I started getting the itch to finally have something new to drive. I've been in loves with the looks of the Challenger since they rolled these out back in '08. On a vacation a couple of years ago, the rental car place didn't have a convertible for me after I had reserved one, so they let me take my pick of any other car they had on the lot. Naturally, I took the black Challenger I saw, and fell in love. This year, I started casually looking at them online and floated the idea of buying one to my wife. After initially being resistant, she gave her blessing. Based on my budget, I realized that I could either buy a brand new SXT base model, or I could buy a gently used one with all the bells and whistles that I really wanted. After hunting around for about a month, I saw a listing pop up for a 2016 SXT Plus with the Super Track Pack and cold weather option package at a dealership right down the street from my house. I made an appointment to go look and it was all I could do not to dance a jig when I saw it. It was THE car I wanted. The pearl white paint, spoiler, 20" rims SO much nicer than the stock base rims. The 8.4" touchscreen, leather, heated seats, vented seats, 276w Alpine sound system, the track pack with all of the awesome functions, paddle shifters, the upgraded brakes, suspension, and tires. One test drive and I was over the moon. Two small nitpicks: a moonroof would have been ideal, and I *really* wish I had the Android auto integration. i didn't realize that wasn't built in until the 2017 models and it would be nice to have. I've had the car 3 months now and I still break into a huge smile every time I fire it up. The ride is so smooth and comfortable. I've taken a few 2-3 hour road trips and it's like sitting in my favorite recliner. Would it be cool to have the V8? Sure. But this is still by far the ballsiest car I've ever owned. Acceleration is darn good, but where you really notice it is when you're passing on the highway, when you're already going 60+ it still takes off like an absolute rocket. Sounds system is the best sounding Bluetooth that I've heard in a car, and I'm kind of an audio quality snob (sad this is the first car I have owned with no CD player!) LOVE LOVE LOVE MY CHALLENGER

About my 2016 Challenger SXT

Muscle car buffs listen in here. I am retired and lived through the most awesome 60s 'muscle car' era...and have never had a muscle car. Once deciding it was time to get one (before I die!) I spent a great deal of time doing research on them. After going for a test drive in Challenger, the decision was easy. WAY cooler than Mustang, Charger, or Camaro. I was really impressed by its giddyup from only a 3.6l 305hp mopar engine. "Out of hole" from a dead stop is not as kickass fast as I'd like, but at a '40mph+ roll', she takes off like a rocket! VERY impressed. So I decided to lease a jazz blue SXT, and had the dealer add a rear spoiler with posts, and it looks RETRO AS HELL!! I really like it!! Only negative is now that I'm older since the car rides very low to the ground, it takes a pretty good effort for me to get out of the car. Getting about 19-22mpg's and quite frankly, handles real well on snow and ice for a rear wheel drive. Hey is Dodge gonna pay me for the FREE ADVERTISING HERE??? lol.

I have the SXT plus model Leather sun roof heated steering wheel cooling seats most all of the bells and whistles. I wish I had read the review I'm about to give before making the purchase, Last vehicle was 14 Durango and loved it. The 16 Challenger is the most uncomfortable car I have ever owned. Even in the leather trim! It's just not a comfortable ride. Handles well runs good even for the 6 cyl. I dislike the front seats.you will notice a lot of used ones at most dealers and I now know why, they look great run well have good options to choose from. Dodge did a lot of things right on this car, they just need to rework the front seats. Anyone interested in a new Challenger with only 6 k miles? I'm looking to get out of mine

I bought the R/T plus in redline red tri coat pearl with the flat black stripe and chrome mags. It looks like a 1971 inside and out. My car has the navigation, heated and cooled seats, auto trans, blind spot detection and backing camera. I have added the front and rear strut tower braces and a cold air intake. Wish the car came with these as they make it sound and handle so much better. Consider the upgraded paint like I did. It looks great in the sunshine!

This car is amazing in every way. Gas mileage on the highway is awesome around 28-30mpg. I bought the base coupe with 1 upgrade which is the sirrius radio. You dont need more than this as the car is loaded. The seats are very comfortable, and the power lumber works great. At 6' tall I could wear a cowboy hat if I wanted there is so much headroom. The power/ handling is off the charts for a car this big. The trunk is huge, huge, huge! I'm 56 years old and this is my 1st New Car. I never found one that was worth buying till now. I added 2 racing stripes, and a rear spoiler, and i get compliments all the time and big thumbs up. The Dark blue paint is icing on the cake.

Have owned dozens of new cars and this is the first time I've ever bought a car and enjoyed it more and more the longer I own it. Great ride and fuel mileage. Poor rear visibility in rear but with back-up sensors and camera, it doesn't much matter. Not a big fan of the 8-speed transmission as it seems to frequently hunt for a gear it likes. But, it does allow great mileage. If I had it to do all over though, I would have opted for the hemi.
