not bad over all
Bought used with 29,000 miles on it and it now has 53,000. During that time I have had to replace the fuel pump and a rear brake caliper. The v6 has been reliable and has decent power for everyday driving, but the fuel mileage is no better than the v8. 4x4 system works fine and has done well in mud and snow. Tire wear, steering, and ride comfort have all been very good. I am satisfied for the most part but if I were going to buy again I would get the v8. I got the v6 because it had a cheaper sticker price, but I'm not saving anything on gas. It uses just as much as v-8 chevy's that I had previously.
Great Truck, but
This is a great truck. Very high build quality and still drives like a new truck. Usual problem with the parking brake dying early and at about 70000 miles echoes of the 'piston slap' problem. New brakes cost $1300 at 120000 miles partially due to problems complicated by the parking brake issue. At 125000 I've got a minor but annoying rear main seal leak.

Best Truck ever
Owned since new, has 175,000km. Not a single problem ever, only money spent has been on regular maintenance. Has the 4.8 V8 which as a ton of power for this small truck and gets about 12l/100km.
Issues with the 2001 Ive had
Ive always driven chevy trucks, they always been tanks< I make work and play hard. The 2001 has given me more issues than older models. The first was the fuel pump in the tank, very expensive to fix thru the dealer, 2nd bad knock on cold start up,Power window motor, replaced whole brake system(hard time finding the correct fuel line, didn't match dealer PN,fuel injectors, front end work and just put in a new transmission, I've had a bad vibration which thru process of elimination I think is the driveshaft, by the time Im done I will have a new truck, but I work it hard but not trashing it, for what they cost I expect it to do the work like the older models,I am disappointed in chevy
Piece of Junk
Absolute lemon. Trying to sell it!
I really wanted a Toyota
Numerous difficulties; right quadrant of taillights has short that has them turn on and off intermitently, Spare tire release under the bed was broken from the manufacturer. I learned this from the tire store. His remark was "none of them work, I do not think yours will either" he was right! Battery terminal was broken on this brand new truck. Right side window does not work at all. Frozen in the up position. Lights on dash come on at strange times. Leak in cab on drivers door in the middle, this a chevy standard feature.
Chevy Trucks: "Built to Fall Apart"
My local car shop is fair and honest. They do good work and do not over charge. Here's the repair story of my Chevy pickup with my mechanic's words about each repair. Gas gauge and warning lights stopped working 90k miles, $400, "typical of these trucks." All 4 upper wheel-wells have rusted through, 95k miles, $4,000 estimate, "even if we grind down to bare metal, it probably won't stop the rust." Automatic transmission, full rebuild, 95k miles, $2,600, "that's not uncommon." Rear brakes (rotors, etc.), 100k miles, $800, "average for these." Rack & pinion steering repair, 140k miles, $370, "unusual, but not unheard of." Brake lines (all), 160k miles, $1,300 mostly labor (have to remove box etc.), "we do a lot of these at that mileage." I have owned 10 vehicles in my 40 years of driving, Hondas and Toyotas mostly, this pickup has been by far the most unreliable vehicle I've ever owned.

engine knock
. started to experience a knock in the motor. REMEMBER this truck is still under the 3yr-36,000. mile warranty! called GMC, they said take it to another dealer, they said i had a problem and replaced the lifters. truck was did not make a sound for 2-3 weeks. took it back NOW IT IS A COLD ENGINE KNOCK. and that that is normal. then GMC sends me a 100,000. mile warranty that i didn't except. NOW THEY WON"T FIX THE PROBLEM AND THERE DEALER SAYS " THEY WILL FIX IT WHEN IT BLOWS UP" ALL THEY SAY IS IT IS NORMAL TO MAKE THIS NOISE. I WILL NEVER BUY A GM PRODUCT AGAIN AND I WILL HOPEFULLY STOP SOMEONE FROM MAKING THE SAME MISTAKE AS ME" BUYING A GM PRODUCT"
Poor Waranty Work
Replaced input steering shaft twice. Having problems again with only 7500 miles. Loud wind noise from rear of cab, in back of both doors. Had to replace rack and pinion steering. Transmission and altanater both have louder than nomal high pitched wine.
Good Truck
Good Truck. Solid. Minor problem witha side mirror.
So so
I love the truck, but there are lots of drivetrain problems. Three recalls ,sqealing parking brake is the worst, two rear differentials, and three comeplete clutches, all in the first four months. Still a good truck all in all.
2001 LS 4.8 V8 SB
Pros: Nice paint (I love the Metallic Blue), Engine!! (4.8L has the power)...I'm sure 5.?L would burn up tires. Decently designed interior. Stereo is adequate. Cons: Poor build quality with noises in dash and electrical problem right off of the lot! Reliability ratings are poor at best from my readings but my experience has been okay so far. I would recommend the truck for the love of driving a powerful Chevy truck that looks nice...don't buy it for a long-term owner... SF
Poor Transmission
After about 36000 the transmission will start slipping and goes out. The 96 mph governor also puts a damper on freeway passing
It's OK
At 1200 miles the steering rack had to be replaced. The gas mileage is poor as well.
tough but not impressive
I purchased my truck 2 1/2 years ago and have been reasonably impressed. Not great accleration or mind blowing power, but a good solid pull. I work it hard everyday and so far it has stood the test of time. Had a few minor problems but overall a good truck
4x4 Z\71 SHORT BOX
Very reliable 2 year's and 36000 kilometrs and the only thing I have had to do is the regular serviceing (oil, grease).took it on a 6000 km. (4000miles) holiday last spring not a bit trouble. the 4.8 V8 has plenty of power and for ashort wheelbase 4x4 it has an excelent ride. only negative I can say about this truck is the tires no good in the snow.
Like a Rock
I bought a 2001 shortbed stepside and have not had one bit of trouble. It rides great and is the most comfortable truck I have ever owned. It has the v-6 engine. It runs great but could be a little faster on acceleration. My only complaint is the factory sound system is junk. Overall a great truck!
this truck rocks!
i like my truck the only thing i dont like is the base engine ive got a 4.3 i think v6 and it has no power it might be the tranny idk but i do know i love my truck!! easy and fun to drive! and thats what a 17 year old should drive! i would recommend it to any one. the only thing i would do to it is put some modifications in to the base model like a cd changer and stuff like that the sound is increadible and its easy to find things in the cab very ergonomic i think and i just LOVE the auto headlights!
Great Pick up for Hunting
I bought my Z71 Single cab for hunting and fishing. I am pleased with the looks and power of the vehicle. I am at 40,000 and it is in the shop for front end problems, nothing major, but it is covered on the extended warranty. my roughness caught up on the vehicle. but it has never left me hangnin. it is a bit rough on country roads, but the overall performance and build is great. i love my CHEVY!!!!!!!!!
Comperably the Best
I wanted a 4 wheel Drive Pick up. But since I am a on the road sales rep, I also wanted a comfortable ride. I drove a new Ford 150, and a new Dodge Ram. The Ford was not too bad ride, but the interior quality was very lacking. The dodge was by far the worst. Both the interior quality was poor and the ride was absoultly terrible, like riding on steel wheels with no rubber on them. The Silverado was execeptional for ride compared to the others, and the interior quality was as good or better than any other.
Simply Outstanding - 2001 Z71 Stepside
I bought my 2001 in 2006 because I really wanted a stepside. I found this Z71 4X4 and pulled the trigger. It had 89,000 on the odometer. Now it has 140,000. I've driven it hard and it keeps coming back for more. One of the first things I added to it was a Flowmaster muffler with chrome tips. I get a thrill every time I fire it up.
Chevy Trucks, the Best
I used to be a used car salesman, and the V-8 Chevy trucks were always the hardest to trade for, and most popular to sell. The Chevy truck has been the most reliable vehicle I ever owned. I just looked at the brake pads, and they are only half worn. The only maintenance I have done is tires, and batttery change, and oil changes.
