Pretty good half ton

Pros: this is a very dependable truck. the 5.3L that i have in my Z71 is bulletproof compared to the Prone to head gasket repair 5.7L. The powertrain is a good 4 speed trans with a single stage torque converter, it shifts smooth and in tow/haul mode very strong and fast like you want it. The interior has plenty of room for an extended cab and the ebony leather is a nice luxury touch. For a half ton pickup its a great strong ride that's stiff like you want a pickup but softer than the other halftons for its time. I'm definitely sold on the Z71 silverados, my wife wants one for her next vehicle so it looks like shes sold on it too.

I bought this truck with 130000 miles.4.8, automatic. I now have 204000. Doesn't burn or leak a drop. I love the way this truck drives and rides, especially after installing super chips, heavier front torsion bars, added another full leaf to the rear springs, Bilstiens, locking rear end. I hate: defective throttle body, noisy pistons when cold, defective fuel tank sender, defective 4wd switch, defective EVAP vent valve, defective abs unit, defective fan blower switch, defective drivers side window regulator, the rocker panels no longer exist due to rot due to bad design. The dealers will not reveal how many of these defective parts have been replaced. Should have been a lot more recalls than there were.

After the economy crashed in 08’, one by one gave up 3 vehicles. 1st was a Tundra LTD 5.7L, fully loaded about 60k on a lease. Amazing vehicle but horrible gas mileage. Next were two V-8 Benz’s, SL and ML. Asked around and researched it thoroughly and found the Chevy Silverado 1500’s ran forever. Took awhile to find a luxo version. After tons of searching in 2011 purchased a 2000 Chevy Silverado, LT, Z71, 4WD, 5.3L, extended cab 4 door, 134K miles. They normally sold for about 11k at the time. Found one that needed servicing and ended up purchasing it for 7k and immediately put about 3k into it. Fuel pump, flushed all fluids and miscellaneous items. The worst part of GM vehicles of this era are the seats. So about 2 years ago had the seats rebuilt with high and low density foam and Katzkin leather hides with center sections factory appearing perforated center sections. The seats are now on par with the Tundra, perhaps a tad better. $1,700 plus tax. Being a car guy all my life did all the smart stuff that amateurs do wrong. Changed shocks out to Bilstiens and tires to maximum size Michelin’s for factory forged alloy wheels. K&N factory replacement air filter. Cat back system with quiet stainless mufflers dual exhaust. Flush brake fluid with Valvoline Performance every two years as brake fluid is hydroscopic aka absorbs moisture. Short changed oil change 1st two times to Mobil 1 and filter of course. Now change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles and add about 1/2 qt in between changes. Replaced things like the water and ac pump, hoses and belts. Recently replaced the front brake rotors and think all 4 disc pads. Flush coolant and transmission fluid about every 3 years. The factory ball joints are ho-hum and replaced those as needed with Moog. Probably most belts and hoses and of course battery twice as I’ve now owned it over 9 years. Paint is original but had the side moldings repainted as they were fading. Other than that factory pewter silver paint is fine. Have replaced most lenses. Freshened appearance up quite a bit. Figure I budget or spend $2,500-3,500 on it per year between servicing, repairs and freshening it up like replacing door gaskets or upgrading it...which is about the equivalent of $250 p/m payments except I own it outright. No lift kits or silly wheel tire combinations. It appears bone stock except for dual exhaust. Between synthetic fluids, smart upgrades it is much more comfortable to drive than when it came off the dealers lot new. Runs quieter than when I purchased it, gets better gas mileage and makes more power. I don’t abuse it but when need to accelerate quickly it gets up on it’s hind legs much quicker. Oh yeah I did try a chip and that was a fallacy so put it back to stock. The weakest link on the 1500’s is the transmission so if one flushes the fluid and changes the filter and doesn’t tow a lot probably last a long time. Spoken with numerous mechanics in the area which is rural with lots of 99-04’ 1/2 ton Silverado trucks, Tahoe’s and Suburbans with the 5.3L Vortec. Last I checked they had customers with 350 to over 500k miles on them still in service. So unless this truck gets wrecked more than likely will grow tired of it and buy something new. With about 200k now on it the mechanics joke around when are you going to break it in? Although they’re rated for higher towing capacities with the V-8’s wouldn’t recommend it. We have a 3/4 ton for that and it tows horses and heavier trailers loaded up breathlessly. Much tougher Allison transmissions to handle the loads. Well maintained and cared for the 1500 LT’s double as a SUV and pickup truck for most needs and probably go 100’s of thousands of miles.Category didn’t exactly list this model. 2000 Silverado 1500, LT, 5.3L, extended cab, 4 door, Z71, 4WD. Update 2022: Did not know about 30% of the 5.3L were recalled due to faulty…porosity in the original cylinder heads. So GM changed manufacturers of cylinder heads. Well one of mine started leaking at about 186,000 miles. Bit the bullet and dealer was able to find the last factory 5.3L Vortec remanufactured GM engine in the US. Evidently GM has stopped supplying these. 3 year, 36,000 mile transferable warranty. With remanufactured starter and one exhaust manifold having to be replaced about $9,000. Ran it on petroleum based oil for first 3,000 miles and switched over to Mobil 1. Repair service people said it was the smartest move I could make. Chatted with new and used car salesmen and they laughed saying the exact same thing. These years were some of the best Chevy trucks. Not including the down payment the annual payments on a new truck would be far more for the new equivalent luxury model. It might get a little better gas mileage but not enough to offset payments and these years reliability. If one purchases a remanufactured engine (now only one’s available) be certain it has the updated cylinder heads. Paint on hood and roof are starting to fade and peel so that’s going to be another $8,500. 2 stage and Linex the truck bed and remove liner. Will probably replace carpet with better insulation. Also better insulation in doors, replace blown out speakers with higher quality brand. Also head unit with GPS, Bluetooth and back up camera. Will probably forego separate subwoofer. AC switch needs to be replaced as only works on 3,4 & 5. Next weak link on these trucks from what I’ve been told is transmission about $3,500 for a factory remanufactured unit but might go aftermarket if it goes out. So between paint, carpet, head unit (etc) and transmission might be looking at another $20,000. So doing the math that would be about $60,000 over the course of 11 years. So that works out to about $5,500 per year or $455 per month with a new engine, transmission, upgraded seats, shocks, tires, suspension and modern head unit with upgraded speakers, etc. My fiancé loves going on trips in this truck and it’s funny now I’m getting compliments on it by younger guys and gals. I’ve tried to keep it as stock appearing and fairly clean as possible. When I first acquired it thought of it as a ugly duckling compared to my Tundra LTD 5.7L luxury model. On the fence if I want to keep spending money on it or sell it and purchase a 2-3 year old top of line Tundra.

After 2 years and being someone that keeps vehicles a long time, I am ready to unload this one. The squeeks and rattles have won; I am tired of fighting with Chevrolet who tells me to go to the dealer and the dealer who says that they can't do anything about the poor quality. The drivetrain made a lot of noise until the 11th trip to the dealer who finally replaced it. Finally confessed there was a problem with it. The squeek in the leaf springs is an ongoing battle that I am losing. The squeeks and groans in the body flex are common and to the point where I expect them. Can's say that I will buy another GM product.

best looking truck i ever saw,but had some problems.the slip yoke on the drive shaft goes slip clunk every time you take off.dealer says there's nothing he can do? second the stearing shaft rattled like it was going to fall off, dealer greased the intermidiater shaft on stearing. that seamed to fix that .last 4 wheel drive switch in transmission went, out dealer repaired. I spent more on this truck than my last 2 trucks and had more trouble with it.the moral of the story is just because it looks good don't mean it runs good.
