How does the XC60 Recharge drive? Not many plug-in hybrids can boogie like this XC60 in hybrid mode. Its 455 horses ran free at our test track to the tune of a 4.7-second sprint to 60 mph and an eye-popping speed of 107.6 mph at the quarter-mile mark. That squares with the real-world experience, which is one of never-ending thrust from idle until you've had enough.
But that's with all hands on deck with the four-cylinder engine in play. How about in pure electric mode? We'd say "adequate" is the best way to describe it. No one will be impressed by zero to 60 in 11.6 seconds, but there's enough oomph to keep up with city traffic, while a new-for-2022 regenerative braking mode enables one-pedal driving like in a real EV. If you suddenly need more power — a lot more — just floor the accelerator through the kickdown switch and here comes the cavalry.
Cruising around town in hybrid mode, by the way, the electric assist is usually ready with immediate and silent part-throttle torque that makes the car feel exceptionally responsive, though occasionally you'll catch it sleeping.
As for turning and stopping, the XC60 Recharge T8 acquits itself remarkably well. The adaptive suspension works like magic on winding roads, making the XC60 feel surprisingly planted at sane cornering speeds. The brakes feel capable, too, which we corroborated with a 116-foot panic stop at our test track on all-season tires, a number that puts many a lighter vehicle to shame.

How comfortable is the XC60 Recharge? In a word, very. The seats are stellar front and rear, augmented by a nifty wool upholstery that had our team oohing and aahing. The back seat in particular merits praise for its remarkably supportive bottom cushion, which is high enough to provide great thigh support without compromising headroom, a neat trick in a rather low-profile SUV. Suspension compliance over various surfaces was usually fine and rarely objectionable.
The climate control system proved capable even on hot days, and we like how it delivers air to the rear via chest-level vents on the door pillars rather than the usual down-low vents on the back of the center console. Persistent wind noise around the side mirrors, as well as some from the roof, earned the Volvo a minor demerit, but road noise rarely intrudes. Vibration from the four-cylinder engine is noticeable at times but not problematic.

How’s the interior? Aside from the rather controversial "portrait mode" touchscreen, which we'll cover in the next section, the XC60 is a delightfully easy SUV to live with. The driving position is practically perfect thanks to a chair-like sitting posture, generous visibility all around, and excellent steering-wheel placement and adjustability. Passenger space in the front and rear is superb. It's a cinch to hop in and out — you slide in at hip level rather than clambering up or dropping down.
The only really annoying thing about the plug-in XC60 is the joystick-like shift lever, which lacks the usual "skip neutral, please!" detents and requires the driver to nudge it twice every time in order to select drive or reverse. In essence, you have to double-click to accomplish a single-click task, and it's way too easy to end up in neutral, which you almost never want to do.

How’s the tech? The vertically oriented touchscreen is probably the XC60's most polarizing feature. On the bright side, it greatly simplifies the control layout since there are hardly any physical buttons. But some commonly used features are buried multiple screens deep, such as the drive-mode menu that you might often use to cycle between hybrid and electric operation or to tell the vehicle to hold onto the available electric miles or charge the battery up while driving. The portrait-style screen also has the effect of making the backup camera display seem anachronistically small.
Interface quibbles aside, the XC60's Google integration is generally pleasing, including Google Assistant voice controls and an impressive Google Maps display that shows up between the gauges. Apple CarPlay works seamlessly, although wireless functionality is not yet available. The adaptive cruise control has full stop-and-go ability and works quite well, struggling only to detect sudden merges at low speeds. Our test XC60 had the available Bowers & Wilkins audio system, and we found it pumps out serious bass and should please audiophiles and regular folks alike.

How’s the storage? The XC60's cargo capacity of 29.7 cubes is impressive both in numbers and in practice. You'll have no trouble fitting luggage or a couple of golf bags behind the rear seats, for example. Fold those seatbacks down and there's room for most of the large items you might want to haul.
We doubt many people will be disappointed by this SUV's storage options, including multiple handy nooks and bins for stowing small items. We wished only for more generous drink-holder cutouts in the door pockets to accommodate larger water bottles.
Got small children? A rear-facing toddler seat should fit in the middle rear position with room to spare between the front seatbacks.

How economical is the XC60 Recharge? On our real-world 115-mile evaluation route, we validated the XC60 Recharge T8's electric range and then some. Running in pure electric mode to start, we covered 38.9 miles, outdoing the EPA's projection of 36 miles. After the switchover to hybrid mode, we got 25.8 mpg on the rest of the trip versus the EPA's estimate of 28 mpg combined (28 city/28 highway). That's a bit disappointing, but given that we're talking about a 455-horsepower vehicle, these results seem quite laudable overall.

Is the XC60 Recharge a good value? Our XC60 Recharge T8 Inscription, with the midyear Extended Range update, had all of the proverbial bells and whistles. Is that a good price? We'd argue yes. You'll pay more for a comparably equipped BMW X5 xDrive45e (the X5 plug-in hybrid), yet the Volvo is quicker and has meaningfully more electric range. It also has a strikingly stylish interior with upscale materials, and we detected nary a squeak or rattle.
Volvo's four-year/50,000-mile comprehensive and powertrain warranty is nothing special, and the eight-year/100,000-mile warranty on hybrid components is pretty standard. But complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first three years is a perk that's less common these days.

With its latest enhancements, Volvo has taken the plug-in XC60 to new heights. It's fast and surprisingly fun to drive and delivers more electric range than just about any other plug-in hybrid on the market. We thoroughly enjoyed our time together.

Volvo cars have left me disappointed when it comes to reliability. Unfortunately, their service and customer care only add to the frustration and make you question your decision to buy a Volvo. Let me share my personal experience, and you can be the judge.
One chilly morning in mid-December, my new XC60 Recharge unexpectedly shut down for no apparent reason. After reporting the issue, … it took roadside assistance a whopping 12 hours to arrive. Imagine being stuck in the middle of nowhere for that long. When they finally showed up, they attempted various fixes but to no avail. Ultimately, they had to tow my car to the service center where I initially purchased it.
To my dismay, the service center neglected my car for the first four days without even offering a loaner vehicle, despite my repeated requests. This was quite disheartening considering they had claimed to be a premium brand when I purchased the car. In reality, their service fell short and felt more like a budget option.
After spending over a week in the service center, I was finally asked to pick up my car. However, my happiness quickly turned into disappointment when the dashboard started showing errors within 10 minutes of driving. I had to return the car the very next day for further repairs.
As of my latest update on January 31, 2023, my car is still in service for the third time in the past 45 days. In fact, during the last 45 days, I have only had my car with me for a mere 3 days; the rest of the time, it has been at Palo Alto Volvo Service.
Please do not assume that my case is an isolated incident. If you visit Twitter and search for tweets about Volvocars, you'll find numerous similar experiences shared by others. It's disheartening to see a brand with such potential fall short in terms of reliability and customer support.

I purchased a 2022 XC60 T8 Inscription with the Bright color option last year. I did benefit from the $5400 Fed Tax Credit, which bought the overall price down to an acceptable level. Unfortunately, it did not have the Extended range battery, and I only got appx.20 miles on pure electric mode, before switching over to the gas mode. There were also a few other options that I wish I could … have got (ie: larger battery, air-ride suspension).
So I traded in my 22 model, and special ordered a new 23 model from the factory with everything I wanted including the larger 38 mile range battery. What a huge difference this has made in my everyday driving. There are too may functional things I love about 2023 XC60 Ultimate T8 to list. It's just pure fun to drive.

Surprisingly quiet and yet sporty. Surprising turning radius. I anticipated that it would be quick, but the traffic merging and passing power are surprising even at highway speeds. The transition from electric to gas is seamless. Comfortable for long rides -- we recently traveled over a thousand miles in two days and felt rested when we arrived. The safety equipment is an added … bonus. Most of our driving is around town and we had the car for 3 weeks before we added a quarter of a tank of gas. The PHEV feature adds to the economy, quiet and power of the vehicle. Easy to drive and good vision for driver.

Fantastic car, comfortable, powerful, excellent on rough roads and long road trips. Love the OTA updates and the additional features they’ve brought to the car. We live in a place with tons of snow and rain throughout the year and this thing eats it all up like it’s nothing. Not sure where all the claims of electrical and mechanical complaints are coming from but I’ve got 5600+ miles on … the extended range edition so far without a single issue. Love the Android auto system, generally just yell at Google to do something like play music, makes call, adjust the seat or wheel heating, find something on the navigation and it just works.
I’ve owned a 2011 V50, a 2016 XC70, a 2019 XC40, and now this XC60 and not had a SINGLE mechanical or electrical issue with any of them. Put well over 80k on each and 210 on the V50 and they all kept going strong. I’ll consider the Polestar 3 only because it’s basically a Volvo and I don’t need all the seats in the EX90.
Elegant, powerful, and reliable. Couldn’t ask for more except a better charging infrastructure in condo buildings…

And in this video, I'm bringing you the best of the best of these car worlds with the top hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles of 2022 and 2023 that we've tested to date. All right. I got to first address an elephant in the room. Car makers tend to be a little in the dark about the confusion many consumers have on what exactly hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars are and can do. So here's the skinny. Electric vehicles, or EVs, are completely and fully battery-powered cars. So you definitely need one of these.
A plug-in hybrid is like a junior EV. It's initially powered by an electric motor with a medium-sized battery you can charge. Don't have a plug? No sweat. When it runs out of juice or needs an extra kick, it has a gas tank and engine to keep it running like a regular car.
Now, hybrids, they're the old geezers of the group-- been around the longest. A hybrid is 100% gas-fueled but also has a small electric motor and battery to assist the gas engine in most situations. Bottom line, you're going to need gas for it.
The reason these cars are growing in popularity is because they typically provide better fuel economy compared to gas-only models. And just about everyone loves to save a little extra cash. Am I right? Now that you've gotten the lowdown, let's see which cars are topping our rankings list.
First, we're sifting through our hybrid sedans. And topping our list for the best is the 2022 Honda Accord. The long-running highly regarded Accord is Honda's largest sedan-- basically, the marathon runner in the group. The EPA estimated the combined fuel economy to be 47 MPG. But when we tested it, we found it to be only 38.
We also noticed this car takes a bit of a ding on the freeway, relying mostly on the gas engine. So once you hit about 65, you're going to likely see a decline. But unlike some hybrids, this battery pack does not affect cargo space because it's tucked underneath the rear seats. The price difference between the hybrid and the regular Accord is relatively small. But the hybrid powertrain makes more power and gets better mileage.
So this one feels like a no-brainer for us. Now, I have to mention, Honda is coming out with a new 2023 version of this Accord soon. We haven't seen it yet, but we've seen what they've done with their latest Civic and CR-V. So knowing Honda usually shares powertrains and tech between its different models and similar size classes, we can already predict what this new Accord will be like.
In the hybrid SUV department, our top-tier Titan-- all right, I just wanted to add that extra T in there-- is the fully redesigned 2022 Hyundai Tucson. Check out this before and after. Now, that's a makeover. OK? It's a small SUV that's historically played things safe and stuck to conservative styling, competing against the likes of the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.
But Hyundai has kissed conventional wisdom goodbye. I was impressed before, but now, this hybrid SUV has the full package-- the looks, the warranty, the tech, strong acceleration, and the fuel economy, which in our testing, fell just three points below the EPA's estimate of 37 MPG.
The Tucson Hybrid delivers more than you'd expect for its price and is just a step or two above its competitors, ranging anywhere from $28,000 to $38,000. It's the top model of what a hybrid SUV should be.
Stepping off the runway, moving on, and-- look, don't at me for this-- the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. Yes, our top plug-in hybrid is a minivan. But there's nothing mini about these 32 miles of all electric range, punchy acceleration, and upscale interior.
We like it because it comes packed with all the latest technology, has the usual minivan traits, including an abundance of passenger and cargo space. So come on in, soccer team. I mean, I won't even know you're there with the entertainment system cranked in the backseat. The fuel savings plus the available tax credits make the Pacifica Hybrid potentially the best value in its class.
But OK, if you're not a minivan person our number-two spot is the Toyota RAV4 Prime. It has great power, great electric range, and it's a RAV4, so you know what to expect. All right. So you want a hybrid car, but something like a Honda Accord doesn't speak to your fashion sensibilities. In comes the Lexus ES 300h. This luxury sedan is comfortable, quiet, and offers seriously impressive fuel economy.
The EPA estimates the 300h gets 44 MPG combined. But we actually got a bit more juice out of it and got 46, which is excellent for any sedan, let alone a luxury ride. Though it has lackluster acceleration, the truth is Lexus dominates our luxury hybrid category because they've expertly combined style and comfort with a hybrid powertrain. And the 300h is overall a pretty appealing sedan.
Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz may have created and mastered the mid-sized luxury sedan, but that hasn't discouraged the others. The Volvo S90 Recharge T8 is a distinctly different flavor of European sedans-- definitely not vanilla. That's why it's made our list for the best luxury plug-in hybrid car.
Like so many Volvos before it, the S90 Recharge is wildly understated. It's powerful and fuel efficient. It's also spacious and comfortable with a pretty handsome interior. The picture looks even better when you consider the long list of standard features and driver aids.
Alas, it's yet another Volvo that's finishing out our list today, which clearly shows Volvo is stepping up their game. And with this XC60-- that is a tongue twister, OK-- they are really hitting the spot with their tech and EV range. It's topping our list as the best luxury plug-in hybrid SUV.
Since the XC60 is a Volvo, safety plays a big part. Get all the expected advanced safety features as standard equipment. And it's even been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. So you get all of that, plus great fuel economy. Running in pure electric mode to start, we got 38 miles out of it, outdoing the EPA'S projection of 36 miles.
