Nice design but poor reliability

I really enjoy driving this car, but the reliability has been very poor. This year/model apparently has a very poor brake design. The car's brakes had to be replaced 4 times in 64000 miles (including new rotors on 3 occasions). Other reviews describe the brake problems in more detiail. Have also had numerous problems with the engine including a bad head- gasket, thermostat, and other random issues. Have also had problems with the AC switch, the blinkers, and the windshield wipers. Despite the comfort of the car the reliability makes this car a real bummer.

Got this car in '07 with 20,000 miles. Besides replacing the head gasket this car has been relatively problem free. It had piston slap since 80,000 miles but it never seemed to do anything besides make noise. It lasted until last fall when at 205,000 some things finally started breaking. I could still get 32 mpg highway driving at 200,000 miles. The common AC problem can easily be fixed if you search it on Youtube. Once I got rid of this malibu I went I got an '02. Overall I'm satisfied with vehicle it did its job.

Electrical issues anyone ?

I have had this car for about 2 years now and the electrical issues started with the blinkers. I got them fixed and then it was the a/c not staying on in Atl. heat ! Now its the theft system or something. They changed out the they keys (door and ignition ) and the ignition box . Now it runs for two weeks then it just cuts off . I almost had it paid off now all this in the middle of winter. Is anyone else having this issue ? Is there a recall on this model ? Help !

I Will Miss This Car

I have had my 2001 Chevy Malibu for almost 8 years now and have never had a problem with it. It's comfortable to drive, smooth ride, great lumbar support. My wife bought a new Altima and sold it a year later because we both had backaches after driving it for more than 30 minutes. I have to get a larger car (SUV) for work purposes but I will miss this car. I think Chevy has an unjustified bad reputation compared to Honda and Toyota - this car has treated me very well for 8 years!

I got my 01 Malibu 2 years ago with only 45,000 miles on it and havnt had any big issues with it other than my AC / heater going out at 80k miles but that was a $30 fix that took me a year to do. My lighter outles have gone out and the engine keeps doing a tugging issue but I'm sure its the area I live in. Other than that just normal wear. I will say they don't do so well on climate change though. I brought it from NE winters to California summers and hit a speed bump and cracked a tie rod but that was $6 to fix. Now at 110k its in perfect condition. I love it.

I am 2nd owner after purchasing the car in '04 w/17218miles. I have driven it daily ever since with minor problems(to me at least). The car has 198,673miles and is still going strong. I haven't been as faithful as I should have with tune-ups or oil changes. Truth be told- just had my neighbor replace the wires and plugs and he informed me that they were original. I have replaced tires (full set) twice. I love my car but know I need to look for a newer one. While I need a car good on gas, I REALLY love my malibu and am looking to get another. I just hope that I get lucky a second time!!!!

Worst first car ever!, I got the Malibu 2001 on 2003, the breaks went bad, then the ac randomly tuned off, then the AC didn’t work, then the ABS went wrong, then the wheels covers did a squeaky sound on the road... then the RPM stayed at 3,000 randomly, the tail lights filled with water every time it rains, the car got foggy on cold weather when the defroster went on. The steering wheel started to disintegrate on my hands… the car lasted 5 years with me… I switched to Nissan Rouge on 2008, and now I own other Nissan, a Murano

I heard a lot of complaints about brakes, but I've only replaced my pads once in the last 40,000 miles. Gas mileage is okay--we get about 22 around town, but it is a V6. On the freeway we get about 30. The car has had some electrical problems. The blinker sound would continually go on, and we had to replace the entire blinker module in the steering column; that cost $300 and happened around 75,000 miles. Besides that, it is the only repair we have done. A couple of times the car has disabled it self due to a faulty theft system. It takes 10 minutes to let you back in. I still don't regret buying the vehicle. Bang for the buck it has served us pretty well.

If you are looking for a vehicle that has a feel of a luxury car at an affordable price, the Malibu is for you. It is stylish, spacious, quiet, good fuel economy for its engine size, electronics, and suspension, makes this car a fun and smooth ride. Oh...and most important to me...it has been one of the most reliable cars I have driven.

Bought a fully loaded Malibu LS five years ago off the showroom floor. Have close to 100k on her and she's still running strong. Plenty of power with good gas mileage (27 hwy) she is a good looking car. Brakes, like most Chevy's, should have been bigger/better. Spend the money on premium rotors with a warrantee when the OE warps. The only other problem is the turn signal flash-dat is starting to fail. This car is a great family sedan and is still cool and safe enough for a first time driver.

If you are thinking of buying this car... don't. That is unless you are rich and don't mind spending a LOT of money on repairs. We bought this car used and everyone knows when you buy a used car your are buying the reasons they got rid of it. Since having this car I have had to replace the water pump twice. The ignition switch once, which by the way the dealership installed the new one and the key that came with the new ignition module wouldn't sync or work with it so they had to program it using the " old keys ". The " T " automatic transmission shift handle broke off and had to be repaired. The normally simple job of changing the serpentine (fan belt ) on this car is a major undertaking. You have to remove the passenger side motor mount in order to install the serpentine belt. Simply put I hate this car so much I have named it " Christine " after the Steven King movie about an evil car that kills people. If this car was a horse I would shoot it and put it out of it's and my misery. I would sell it but I wouldn't sell this thing to my worst enemy.

Decent car with good engine. Unfortunately the theft system is a definite problem. I have had to replace the intake timing gaskets and am looking to replace the head gaskets. The cooling system has problems operating with the Dex-cool additive that is recommended under warranty. Decent gas mileage 22-27mpg mixed. I cannot say that I will buy this model again.

I have had nothing but problems with this car in the last six months. Fuel pumps, the timing, but lately, the wonderful theft system keeps cutting on and leaving me and my car stranded on the side of the road. Chevy says this is not their problem, but upon investigation, I have found that this has happened often to this model car. Instead of a recall, chevy continues to stick their head in the sand and pretend they have no liability in this area. I recommend that not only do you stay away from Malibu, but all chevys. They DO NOT stand behind their product.

Bought this car in early 2011 for 1000 bucks with 148,000 miles on it.....once I dropped a couple hundred into it was like a gift from the heavens. Car drives very well, excellent gas mileage about 23 combined, very dependable, torquey V6 engine. Has a very boring interior design and the exterior started losing paint and rusting very badly after only 2 months of driving. The engine then melted through both intake manifold gaskets and sprang a very bad leak, The alternator blew and the fuel line began leaking. Luckily a few days in my garage and alot of tears and sweat she ran like a dream again. Recommend as a great first car or just as a daily driver.

Our Malibu has just been recalled there are so many problems with this car. The key can practically be pulled out while driving. While closing windows accidentally put the Malibu key in our 99' Blazer and it fit in it wouldn't turn but the door chime came on a quality key wouldn't even fit in. we recently had a blown head gasket and it needed a new engine the ac doesn't work well our familys 02 malibu was left in drive and the key came out and the battery died the key should not turn when a car is in drive it wa so scary I dont want to even ride in the car we typically drive our Tribeca everywhere.

Great car at an affordable price, especially enjoy decent gas mileage around town. Roomy for trips with plenty of trunk space. Three trips to the shop in 2 years -- water seeped into car during heavy rain (factory failed to ensure sealant was applied in all the right places), A/C control sensor and turnsignal controller. Overall we're pleased and would buy another.

I love the style of my Malibu. My sister was surprised when I told her it was a Malibu - she thought it was a Jag! I feel young-at-heart driving with the sunroof open and the CD playing. My Malibu has been very dependable; I've only had to change the oil on a regular basis, rotate the tires, etc. No problems otherwise!

I got this car 2 years ago from a Rental place, and it had 44,000 miles on it. It now has 63,000 miles on it, and things have been acting up. The passenger front and back windows don't work with the drivers side control, the heat/AC doesn't come on until the 4th and 5th setting, the hazard lights/blinkers don't work at least once a day, and I've replaced the brakes twice. The ABS gives me a lot of trouble in the winter, it pulses and the brakes disengage--- very dangerous! Lastly, the coolant seems to be used up EXTREMELY quickly-- not sure what the problem is there.

I bought this car for my daughter in 2015, and I just started driving it myself this week. Might I say that she drove it HARD for those two years. It currently has 177,000 miles, and is running great. Good gas mileage. I haven't had any of the troubles that the other folks are talking about (yet). I do all of the maintenance on all of my cars, and so far have only had to tackle the typical stuff (rear struts, new tires, EGR purge valve, muffler, thermostat, etc). Gotta say the thermostat is a real bear to change on this car. Did so, and put in a slightly cooler one to hopefully avoid the intake manifold gasket problem. I am very happy with it.

We purchased an 01 Malibu after our escort broke (really broke, like exhaust in the cab/no rear suspension, started if you were lucky). This were fine at first but it's been nothing but problems. The AC will turn off on its own (the light will blink) and you have to change air speeds to get it back, the theft system caused it to not start one day (and its a known issue and they won't disable it), the brakes behave as if the ABS is ALWAYS ON, it stalls on speed bumps, it's killed 2 brand new batteries, and more often then not the keyfob will not work. We originally were going to buy a jetta but the dealer said that one wasn't working and showed us the malibu. I should have walked out.

This car was my first car and I wasn't able to get a full years use of it. The first 6 months were great until the check engine light came on. The car then started idling and I had to put out a few 100 bucks for that. Then my fuel system burst into flames, the latest was the abs light coming on and off. I've had to put way too much money into something I was guaranteed would last a long time. If you need a truly reliable car, don't get this. This car will get you from point A to point B and that's about all

Many small problems as stated in previous reviews. Also had MAJOR problems around 50K. Starter failed, Intake manifold gasket failed, and then the engine failed. Even the key fob is poorly designed because you can easily set off the car alarm accidentally. Overall, the 2001 Malibu is a very unsatisfactory car ownership experience. The rapid depreciation tells the story quite well, because the free market effectively values the car for what it is worth (not much). I could not recommend a Malibu to anybody, and will be buying a Japanese or Korean brand next time around.

The vehicle was purchased new and has always been regularly serviced. Only minor problems were experienced until the milage clicked over 30,000 miles. I'm now at 50,000 and trading it in for a 2003 Honda Accord. I've already had to replace the brakes, repair a coolant leak, replace the AC/heater fan motor, replace the turn signal switch, a front headlight housing that allowed water in, and the driver-side seat belt. I agree with the previous reviewer that stated his Malibu was slowly falling apart; I feel the same way. I am not hard on my cars!

This is the first car I've owned that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Five adults fit comfortably in this vehicle. There is plenty of leg room (even in the back seat). I have a single car garage that is a little on the small size, but this vehicle fits with room to spare. There are plenty of cup holders, and a large glove box. If you have small children, this is a great car because it has three anchors for car seats.

I was somewhat reluctant to buy a Chevy after several happy years of owning a Camry, but I have never been happier. This car was purchased used, but it still has some of the original warranty left, I don't think we will be using it. Road noise is almost non-existant, and the leather interior looks like a much more expensive car. The V-6 is very powerful, and this car has get-up and go. The handling is amazing, the stereo wonderful, and everything about it is just fabulous. I don't think I will ever go back to another car again.

I bought this car with only 11,000 miles on it and yes it ran great for about 3 months, after that you name it it happened. The clear coat on front bumper started flaking off, back drivers side window would not work properly, tires did not hold to wet roads, replacement of 1 tire usually leads to all four because of computer (and at around $80 per tire)gas tank is plastic and small, and lets not forget I had to have my computer sensors reset twice, and it depreciated faster then anything. What happened to Chevy being the best. I will never purchase another Malibu ever.

Brakes are the achille's heel of this vehicle. Like all of GM's mid-size cars (Had a '99 Alero with the same problem). At 28,000 miles the discs had to be turned and the pads changed. The Alero was worse, in 35,000 miles the brakes were repaired three times. I just don't get the sense that this car will last as well as my 98 Protege.

This is a good first family car because you plenty of room for the kids and the stuff i.e. stroller baby seat diaper bag and you can afford it with it's nice price tag. They only bad thing is the resale/trade-in value on this car.

I bought this car used almost 2 years ago with 70,000 miles and I just love it. I've only had it in the shop once for small repairs and once for tires. I traded a Jeep Grand Cherokee (which I really miss) for the Malubu but I was pleasantly suprised. It has every bell & whistle that Chevy offered. I have been a long time customer of Chevy and this car solidified my relationship w/them. There are a few small things (center console) that I dislike but, overall this is a wonderful car!

Expensive to maintain

I got this car with 9900 miles on it, now has almost 160,000. I seem to have similar problems as everyone else. The intake gaskets need replaced, which causes the car to leak coolant, coolant reservoir replaced, fuel pump replaced water pump replaced, electrical problem with the emergencey hazard switch, some type of oil sensor replaced. The A/C turns off and on sporadically. Then the other normal manitenance. This car has been a very expensive car to maintain.

I bought this car used at 70,000 miles and have had it only a year. I have had more problems than I can believe. I put more money into it than it cost in general. I've had my car to 4 different auto shops and 2 dealerships several times and no one can permanently fix the problem. I've fixed the starter module twice, fuel pump, ignition switch, 3 censors, radiator, brakes twice and several connections were so rusty they quit working. Right now it's sitting in my drive way because it won't start. Do not buy a Chevy Malibu ever! It's a huge waste of money.

brake pads made of swiss cheese!

Well, after less than 32K miles, my front brake pads are completely worn out. To quote my wife, "I drive like an old lady!" I have owned several other front drive cars, none of which have needed changing before 70K! Did everything that GM allows, and of course, no ownership at all. I called the salesman, sales manager, service manager and rep together so they could witness another life long and former GM employee (to boot, I am eligible for the GM discount) walk out the door to Honda or Toyota. I'm done dealing with the problems!

During the course of 3 years, I put 60k miles on this car. In that period I replaced the battery, brought it in twice for a fuel level indicator recall, had to reprogram the BCM, replaced the tires, replaced the front brakes 3 times, including rotors, pads and calipers; replaced all rear light bulbs. Before I sold it, the right front wheel bearing, differential and flasher units were all failing, and there was a leak in the right rear lens cover. An absolute lemon of a car, with abysmal resale value, terrible customer support from the manufacturer and a bigger waste of money than most cars I've owned. I strongly caution buyers against this car.

Malibu quality problems

The first three years we owned our Malibu the quality was good. Now the car is 3 years old and we have nothing but problems. Front brake calipers are creeking and need replacement, A/C fan speed 1 and 2 no longer work. Rattles in dash have started. Piston slap on start up is very bad. It may be time to get rid of this car.

Best car at an affordable price

We were looking for a good family car. The Malibu is the best car for the price and provides some neat features not normally found on cars in the price range. This car seems to be low maintenance (time will tell) due to many features like the 50,000 mile coolant and such. The anti-lock breaks being standard is very nice, this car handled very well in the snow over the 2001-2002 Utah winter where we drove several times for hours on slick highway and secondary roads.
