2018 Transmission failed after 3 months

Melissa, 11/30/2017
2018 Chevrolet Equinox LT 4dr SUV (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 6A)

I have had my 2018 equinox for 3 months, and I loved it until 2 days ago when the transmission failed. The part is back-ordered, so obviously this is happening to other people. The dealership says it could be 2 days or 2 weeks.... and they don't have a loaner car. I'm pissed.

working as designed- NOT

Customer Care at General Motors explained to me my 2018 Equinox is "working as designed" because they were no computer code errors. I guess that means the car is DESIGNED to shake/ shimmy/ vibrate at low & steady speeds. Test drive yours carefully. This Equinox replaced a 2013 Equinox that I never had a mechanical problem with. Dealer service manager said the 2018 transmission design shifted a lot more than the earlier one. OK with shifting- NOT HAPPY with the shake/ shimmy! Service writer said his tech thought the problem would iron out by 3,000 miles- NOPE. (9/19 update) The dealer contacted me several weeks ago and said the MAY have a fix. They did some tinkering and although the problem was slightly improved they admitted they still had issues and started a new TAC with GM. Told me I would be contacted in a few days and not be left hanging. Well- no contact and still hanging.

I love my new Equinox

Adam Woodworth, 07/14/2018

If your going to buy the new Equinox I highly recommend upgrading to the 2.0 Liter with the 9 speed transmission in it. I have owned several models through the years and the smaller motors are awful in the snow and on the highway. I just traded in my 2016 for the 2018 Premier 2.0 Liter AWD with the 9 speed transmission in it. The car has all the bells and whistles in it. I love the lane assist in the car. It drives and rides like a Cadillac. I love the leather and the seats have the fans in them. The 19" hankook tires make all the difference in the ride and handling. I love the built in towing package as well. I just got back from a trip out west and it was a great time. My family and I all had a blast and the car was the cherry on the top.

Can't Recommend.. engine died @ 1,400 miles

Bought a new 2018 Equinox as my wife liked the 2010 Equinox that she drove (even though we had a lot of oil consumption issues with that vehicle). Being a loyal GM customer, went ahead and purchased a new 2018 Equinox. Rather than turn in the 2010 Equinox as a trade-in vehicle, decided to keep it for our college-bound daughter. Back to the 2018 Equinox purchase decision, since several years had passed and the vehicle had been completely redesigned, figured that all engine issues had been fixed. Unfortunately, no! With only 1,400 miles on the odometer, vehicle completely died as we were on the highway driving to a family reunion. Once the vehicle was examined by the dealership, they informed us that it needed a new engine (under warranty, of course). Couldn't believe it. That was the first of two factors that turned our GM loyalty upside down. The second factor occurred a month later.. the engine on the 2010 Equinox failed. That vehicle only had 45K miles on it. Because the vehicle was 8 years old, however, GM advised us that we would have to cover 80% of the $7,500 engine replacement cost. Shocked, I challenged that all the way up the GM chain. Reminded them of our two decades long GM loyalty. At the time, had 3 Chevrolets in the garage .. and each of them were not old, low-value vehicles. In fact, in the past 8 years we had purchased 3 brand new Chevrolets (model years 2010, 2015, 2018). GM didn't care. As such, determined that we were done with GM. Will not remain loyal to a company that significantly fails at producine a quality product (no car should need a new engine @ 45,000 miles, let alone 1,400 miles) and a company who doesn't take care of loyal customers when an issue comes up. Loyalty is earned .. which it appears GM doesn't get. As such, with our experience, cannot recommend the (2010 or) 2018 Equinox. **UPDATE: Sept 2020** Sold the 2018 Equinox. Replaced it with a 2019 Ford Edge. So far, the Ford is proving to be a much more reliable and better performing vehicle, although we still need more time to be assured of that. **UPDATE: March 2021** The Ford Edge has been such a better vehicle than the Equinox. It provides better performance and have had no mechanical issues whatsoever. Looking like Ford will now have our business.

Fuel economy versus fuel cost

MWK, 10/30/2017

In general, we like the car. I hope we like the front seats on a long trip as they seem a little hard and the bottom seat cushions are short. My biggest issue is the recommendation to use 93 octane fuel in our 2.0 Turbo, which came as a surprise to me after the purchase. In our area, we can't get 93 octane fuel, which is a common issue in much of the U.S. We can get 91 octane, but is costs $.50 more a gallon than regular 87 octane fuel. Thus, the fuel savings of the 4 cylinder engine are offset by the higher cost of the fuel. UPDATE: Drove 500+ miles today, and seats were very comfortable. Mileage by computer was 29.7, but manual calculation was a little less. Today in Wisconsin, we saw 91 octane fuel priced $.90 higher than 87 octane fuel. 1-21-21 Update 49,000 miles driven. I like the vehicle as it is easy to get in and out, has good visibility, good build quality, few mechanical issues, is a very nice size for city driving yet is very comfortable and good to drive on a long trip (600 miles + per day), good room inside for a smaller vehicle, and has a very good performing drive train (2.0 Turbo). However, Chevy did cut several corners and could have done a better job in many areas. For example, the Equinox can have any one of 3 headlights bulb systems depending on the trim level, and none of them work all that well.

Great replacement

This is an excellent replacement for the last generation. Great engine, better performance than the last generation but also better fuel economy. This is not a drag racer but has plenty of power for on ramps and passing. Seats are better. I have some back problems but these seats give great support for my back and are very comfortable on longer drives. I have also found the cargo space better because my golf clubs will fit sideways in the opening of the cargo area. My wife still has our 2014 model which have always been satisfied with. The styling is also very pleasing on the new generation. We also have the blind spot warning on the side mirrors which is great. Dual climate controls are also an improvement as my wife and I don't always like the same temperature setting. We are very satisfied with this vehicle so far.

My 5th Equinox

A lot of changes in the 2018 model. I don't like the Keyless entry and starting; would prefer a regular key which always works and does not need a battery. I just drove 13 hours two days in a row and the left side of my neck and upper chest were very painful from a bad seat belt design. Too tight and strap hits neck. I am 5'10" and medium build (160 pounds). I have put a safety pin in seat belt to it does not close all the way but when I get out of the car the seat belt now hangs without going all the way in. Miles per gallon are better than my other equinoxes. There is a malfunction in what is called the cabin pressure release valve in all models. GM knows about this and is trying to find a way to fix it. This valve allows cabin pressure to release when you close the door or window. These valves in the 2018 models keeps opening and closing as we are driving causing a thump thump kind of noise. There is a new seat cooling feature which cools the driver seat and the passenger seat, a nice feature.

Road noise regret

My Premier fwd with Michelin Premier ltx 18" tires creates a tremendous amount of road noise. I would suggest driving the vehicle for a day or two before making a purchase. GM and Michelin claim that there is not a problem with their product and the dealer is stuck in the middle and cannot offer any assistance. After eight months of ownership this vehicle still offers too much road noise. I have now owned this vehicle for almost three years and the road noise is still an issue. Also, the Michelin premier Ltx tires do not perform very well in the snow and ice. Other electronic issues with censors, etc, have gone undetected by the dealership.

The Good, the Bad & the Worried!

Renee Turk, 08/29/2018
2018 Chevrolet Equinox Premier 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 9A)
10 of 10 people found this review helpful

I used to be a General Sales Manager of a Saturn Dealership, am a die-hard GM purchaser and have been for years, but I may change with my next vehicle purchase. The pick up in the 2.0L Premier is peppy and quiet and the ride is smooth, with the 9-speed automatic transmission shifting smoothly. The handling is good, the safety features are great (especially the lane assist to help with blind spots). But I was shocked to find that there are no adjustable seat belts in the front to prevent neck rub. In addition, the road noise is atrocious! My thought was that the Hankook tires are to blame since I had Michelins on my 2012 Equinox and loved them, but I have read that those 2018 Equinox vehicles that have the Michelins are also noisy. What the heck, GM? You produce a $40,000+ vehicle and don't insure the quality and smallest important features to be standard? No cargo net or rear cargo shade included? And a design feature I didn't consider being "picky" about is the lip or edge of where you have to lift your leg to enter the vehicle. It sits up about 5-6 inches from the floorboard, whereas in my husband's Buick Enclave and the Cadillac SUV there is practically no lip--the floorboard is almost even with the door ledge where you enter the vehicle, making it easier for older adults and persons with knee or hip issues to get in. The suggested/recommended gas to use is 93 octane, something I didn't realize until I hit 1500 miles, but I have seen no difference in the performance. With 93 octane being almost a dollar more than regular, I may return to using regular gas. And quite honestly, the price of the vehicle is way too high. Your competitors are giving as much in features for $5,000-10,000 less. Right now, I have 2500 miles on my vehicle, the auto start is not working anymore and the rear gate lift does not automatically work when I put my foot under the left side of the bumper. I really didn't expect to be back at the dealership this early in my ownership of the vehicle. GM, it seems to be a well-know fact--I have heard your warranty support isn't what it used to be. I sincerely hope this isn't a truth. You truly need to look back on your Saturn development notes.

Doesn't shift into high gears in extreme cold temp

Sandy, 03/09/2018

I just want to make potential buyers aware that the 2018 Chevy Equinox does not shift into higher gears during freeway driving in extreme cold temps. It takes about 20-30 minutes to warm up before it will finally shift into the higher gear. This will affect gas mileage. Chevy said they do not currently have a way to fix the problem. Also--pay attention to the tires. The traction isn't as good in winter driving as my previous AWD SUV (Santa Fe). The rest of the features are excellent. Great design, it has all the extras, drives nice, acceleration is good (when its not cold).

Slow transmission

Kurt D. Gaus, 04/22/2018
2018 Chevrolet Equinox LT 4dr SUV AWD (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 6A)

Overall, a great SUV. Only problem is the transmission which is very slow to down shift. Ii up shifts just fine but when going up or down even on the smallest inclines, the transmission is super slow to shift. When in cruise control, this results in a speed drop of 5-7 miles per hour going up or down the incline before the transmission finally shifts down. This also makes the whole car shudder from being in too high a gear too long. This was also a problem with my 2015 Equinox, but is now even more apparent with the 2018's smaller engine.

Great SUV

Well after renting the LT model for taking my son from Wisconsin to Dallas, Texas for a football camp, I was sold. I put 3400 miles on it and loved every aspect of the vehicle. I mean what's not to love I averaged just shy of 34mpg the entire trip including city driving with it. The little turbo ecotec motor has plenty of power to get you up to speed quickly or get you around others on the road, just remember to spool the turbo before taking off. I was a little apprehensive about the noise at first, I mean I've always had six and eight cylinder cars and suv's in the past and thought the little 4 cyl would make a lot of noise. Not the case at all the engine was smooth and quiet. The vehicle, however, does have a little road noise, but is still better than my previous 07 impala. The HID headlights are awesome and bright and I can't believe it's standard equipment on the LT package. The mylink infotainment is excellent as well, great sound and the touch screen is very easy to use. Love the android auto function, now I don't have to look at my small phone screen for google maps as it comes right up on the infotainment screen. The seats are very comfortable and I feel like I'm strapped in with out even having the seat belt on, I do always where my seat belt. The back seat area is big and roomy. My 15 year old son, all 6 foot plus of him said he was very comfortable back there and loved the fact that he could recline the seat back. As for trunk/cargo space there could be more. The under the deck cargo area is a plus but item's have to be short to fit under it. I get what they did, they made the back seat area bigger at the sacrifice of losing a little cargo area. For me this is fine because my family of 5 will never use this vehicle for long trips as it's my daily driver for work and store runs and we have a suburban for our bigger trips. I love how it handles which is just as good as my wife's Taurus or better. It hugs the road and doesn't drift or sway on corner. The reason I bought mine was my experience with my rental. My equinox has 600 miles on it right now and I can't base any mechanical problems or other issues at this time as I haven't experienced any. I will repost if I experience any problems. I do suggest the LT model over the LS model as you get more standard features with the LT package than the LS package for relatively a small price increase and I do recommend adding the 1900.00 convenience package as it gives you auto start, side blind spot detection, rear blind spot detection, dual climate control, heated seats and the power lift gate. Speaking of the side blind spot detection it works great especially for those pesky drivers that like to sneak up on you and then continue to sit in your blind spot. Also with the my Chevy app I can start my car and unlock or lock my doors, if I forget to, from anywhere in the world right from my smart phone as long as I have cell service. Great feature especially if it's really hot or really cold out. Overall I love the vehicle and feel I made a great purchase especially since it had 18% off MSRP at the time of purchase.

A Big Positive Surprise!

We leased this car as basically an around town vehicle. We own a 2017 Tahoe Premier but as nice as it is on the road, it is a bit clumsy in town. So we leased this FWD LT Equinox for our everyday driving. We've been so impressed with it in town that we took it on a 300 mile trip today and we were totally impressed with the powerful engine, great driving dynamics and general comfort on rural highways and interstate roads as well. We arrived home and began to ask just why we actually own the Tahoe, this new Equinox is that good. It is a comfortable, usable package with good seats, clear controls and an impressive 1.5 liter engine. We had read less than positive things about the 1.5 liter engine but it is more than enough engine for this SUV. Our trip today of 310+ miles averaged an impressive 33.2 mpg with speeds of 65 to 80 mph. We are quite impressed with this new Equinox.

Good SUV, but not worth $40,000+

I do like my SUV. The ride is good , but could've been better for the price. Not as smooth over bumps, but ok. The interior is beautiful, but cheap materials that show smudges easily. I got the leather vinyl interior, and some parts of the interior just gives you that plastic feel. Again it's nice but definitely overpriced!

Not What I Had Hoped For

The new Equinox is a nice looking car, the interior and exterior changes (much needed) look great. Visibility is just ok and the option packages basically require you to buy/lease an LT2 or higher to get any kind of safety equipment. Not impressed with the parking assist or cross-traffic alert as they don't work until you are right on top of an object. The old Equinox was a 5-star safety-rated vehicle, this one is only 4-stars. The tests hadn't been done when I leased; if I had know GM was going backwards on safety I wouldn't have leased it. They made this version smaller and lighter, apparently at the cost of safety...bad move. The 1.5L engine is a dog; the 2.0L Turbo is great though with over 250HP, it's more than this vehicle will ever need. Braking seems to be really good as well. Now for the bad news....at just under 4k miles the A/C compressor went out. The Chevy dealer fixed it right up for me and provided a nice loaner while it was being worked on, but come on, a brand new $34k car should not break down after 4k miles! Then the real bad news....the vehicle has been in the shop 4 times now for a "Service ESC" light. ESC is apparently Electronic Stability Control and when it goes out it takes the ABS and Traction Control out as well. So, here I am in a Colorado winter with no ABS or Traction Control...very nice. The dealer can't seem to figure out what's wrong let alone fix it. It's very disappointing. Overall, the new Equinox is a very nice looking car, the 2.0L engine has great power and it's pretty fun to drive. However, with the downgrade in safety, the need for repair after just 4k miles and ongoing electronic/ESC issues, I would not lease another one. Not at all what I had hoped for.

I drove the standard 1.5L models of this vehicle and hated it. The car seemed very under powered and boring to drive. I gave the 2.0L model with AWD and Turbo and the car is a blast to drive! It's got around 260HP and is very quick to get going. The acceleration is incredible and really feels great. The transmission shifts seamlessly and and smooth. This re-design was a win by Chevrolet! Seriously, if you are interested though don't even bother with the lower end 1.5L options.

CHEVY PLEASE CHANGE THE FRONT DRIVER'S SEAT!!

My review is for a very long test drive. I am a Real Estate Agent and spend countless hours in my vehicle. My husband has the 2017 Chevy Equinox - however, for me, it has numerous blind spots & I was reluctant to buy that model. I was excited to hear they fixed these issues with all of the new 360 camera amenities. Unfortunately, as soon as I sat in this truck - I knew I was not going to purchase it. It drives great. The blind spot notification, navigation & front to back camera shots are phenomenal. The wireless charger? Awesome. BUT, the front seats are beyond UNCOMFORTABLE. I had my sister with me and she confirmed the same thing. I came home and googled the front seats --- apparently this is already an issue within the professional reviews. The seats are too firm, too hard and basically crush your hips. The seams are oddly placed and the seat itself cuts at mid-thigh area. The 2nd row is however, very comfortable and "longer" from front to back. No doubt I would have purchased it if not for the front seats. Chevy, why did you fix all of the other issues but take out a very comfortable driver's seat out for the 2018???

Drive Shaft Broke at 3,000 miles

Starting to have a vibration at 500 miles. Dealer said I had dirt in the wheels. I power washed the wheels and it helped but the vibration got worse again. Went to have tires balanced at a tire place. They said the inside of the right front wheel was covered with grease from the drive shaft. At 3,000 miles the drive shaft broke and the dealer fixed it under warranty. It was another "we have never seen this before" dissclaimer. I told them about the gas gage not reading right. They said they are all that way and GM doesn't have a cost effective fix so live with it. As for the stop/start thing, sometimes the dam thing won't restart unless I put in park first. So now when I am comming to a stop I slip it into nuteral and it keeps running. When you stop and hear/feel the clunk put it back into drive.

Ok, I'm a car guy, love cars, have had over 50, all new, not bragging I drive a ton, and don't want to deal with break downs. The last 2 cars I've had have gone back under the California Lemon Law (Manufacturers call it a "Repurchase"), a 2015 Subaru Forester XT, and a 2016 Hyundai Tucson Sport 1.5 Turbo. Both because of software problems, the Subaru had the horrible CVT, and the turbo had severe hesitation on the freeway mostly. The Hyundai was a great car, but the 7 speed DCT is dangerous, talked to many other owners at gas stations, and car washes, they ALL had the same problem. From a stop when you got to about 10-15mph everything would stop nothing from the gas pedal, making a left turn almost got hit twice because it was dead stalled. The problem is so bad, and Hyundai has so many "Repurchases", I had a loaner for over 2 months. Now the Equinox, bad first, seats not great, but I am 6'2", 280lbs, and the thumb, thumb noise I do have like another reviewer mentioned, but will be fixed. Drove everything, Rav 4, Honda CRV, Escape, Kia Sportage, Tucson without the 7 sp. DCT, Subaru Outback, VW Tiguan, nothing was really a stand out, and every time I drove the CVT I hated it (CRV. Outback), all had 4 cylinders, and were slow, and noisy. The 2.0 Turbo in the Equinox with the 9 speed is special, quiet, fast, and easy to get 30mpg on the highway, and no it was not $40,000, MSRP $31,800, has blind spot, Android car play, rear hatch is automatic, rear camera, with audible alert, the things I need, no AWD, in Cali don't need it. Firm ride, but not harsh, very quick and fun for a CUV, and the best part got it for $24,000, dealer discount $2,000, rebates $2,000, and last get a GM credit card through Capital one, 3 or 4 times a year they send you a coupon for $3,000 on almost any GM car, or truck. So after all that less than any car I mentioned above, go drive the others, and drive this last you will see the difference, I did.

This is a great vehicle. Rides like a car not a truck. Good MPG, good value for the money. Took the vehicle on a road trip and preformed excellent. The industry is going to the start stop engine and it takes some getting use to, but no problems at all with the operation of the system. The technology in the vehicle is wonderful, Chevy hit a home run with this vehicle

We purchased a 2018 equinox and have a engine miss at low speed. Took it back to the dealer and they took it out on the road and couldn't get the car to do it again. We took it out and it continues to do it for us at low speed with city driving. The Dealer told us that there is a three year warranty so we have three years to fix it. On a new purchase it was not the reply we wanted. Not good business either.

Traded in a 2016 Silverado LT, which was amazing. Fuel was very expensive with my commute, however. Thought the equinox would be a reasonable compromise of space and fuel economy. At 5' 11" the driver's seat is ok, but the center console is too close to the driver. Other issues include, odd noises from the roof at highway speed, ticking while in AWD. Wobbling during accelleration, infotainment issues, poor quality of interior pieces, water and snow ingress when opening doors, rear camera picture is poor.

Liked the body style and decided to replace my 2003 Honda Pilot. Picked up the car and the dealer indicated that the fuel gauge wasn't reading properly. Said GM notified the dealers of a possible problem with this. Drove about 200 miles and the gas guage failed. Said 0 miles left. Stopped and got gas and it only took 5 gallons? Then the check engine light came on. OnStar notified me stating and issue with the engine and transmission. Too it to the dealer and they replaced the gas tank. Drove my wife to work and on the way back the engine failed and had to have it towed to the dealer. Onstar notified my after one week saying the dealer had to replace the fuel pump. Car has less than 600 miles! I complained to the dealer and one of the salespeople sent me an email back saying he was sorry for my inconvienience but I should take the car back to the dealer who sold it to me! Reallly? I haven't purchased a American made vehicle since 1970 (Olds Cutlass). I thought I would give GM a chance. What a piece of junk! My Pilot with 205K on it has NEVER failed. Bottom line is " you can put lipstick on a pig.....land it's still a pig!"

New 2018 Equinox. Service visits starting at 6500 miles. Bad intercooler, bad ECM, bad Mass AirFlow Sensor. Now on it's 5th repair visit and nobody knows what's going on. At 9000 miles now. They just don't make vehicles like they use to. They want more money for less dependability.

I really want to like this car, 3 things that I hate. the auto stop is really annoying and actually I have found it almost unsafe at moments, at least make an option to turn it on and off. The seats are really uncomfortable, like very. Oh and the seatbelt is terrible and strangles your waist because it gets wayyyyy too tight as you drive, sadly i might have to put a clothes pin at the top.

We bought our car BRAND NEW 11/2017. The first three months the car was in servicing 8 times. First day of owning the car, there was a noise. Took it in to discover we had a defective exhaust system (made noise). Within two weeks we were back at servicing to learn we had a defective driver’s side window (wouldn’t go up with one pull of the button), next came defective roof rails (made noise when driving) followed by needing a new timing belt at 2000 miles (belts should last 60,000 miles). Then oil light came on at 3000 miles. We researched the oil issue and it’s been a problem. In fact a lawsuit was just won for car owners for earlier models. To top all of this.... we’ve had the car 1 year 7 months, car is under 9000 miles and it started making a noise again... Took it back to servicing where we learned we have another defective exhaust system. On a positive note. We love the look and size of car. I have bad back and it’s very easy to get in and out of. I love the look of the Equinox!!! Great radio system. I’m disabled and I find it easy to get into and out of. I literally went through three cars in three years as it was an issue. Great getup and go. My daughters who are twins love it too. They’re learning to drive and they think the teen report is fun to review. Using foot to open trunk is nice...but for some reason when my hands are full it doesn’t work (user error, I’m sure). Plenty of storage in back, plus added storage under the trunk liner. Very roomy. A few of my mild complaints would be....We have a tough time putting the second row seat back up if it was down; as it’s heavy. I wish when you used remote start it would honk to acknowledge it is on. Turning radius could be improved. Storage on driver door is small. I have a handicap parking permit and it doesn’t fit. So am I upset about all the problems I had in the beginning? Not really. Everything was covered with the warranty. It’s easy to drive. I haven’t lost my faith in Chevrolet. In fact I bought a brand new Chevy Trax for my daughter’s which should be arriving soon.

I’ve had so many problems with this cAr starting 2 weeks after I bought it! The fuel gage never went to full and gm didn’t have a fix for it until a year later. So for a year I never knew how much gas I really had! Also at this time my car play would freeze up. The volume doesn’t work, can’t chabge channel, steering wheel co tells don’t work. I was told it was my phone. Got a new phone still same problem. I was told as long as the radio works it’s good! No guarantee car play or android auto will work when you buy the car according to GM. I also started feeling some shaking, like the car is hesitating and was told that’s just how the car drives! Do not buy this car!!!! Headaches for a year now!!! I bought this car for safety and hands free...it’s not safe if I can’t use hands free! Thanks GM!

We like owning this a lot. It's very comfortable, with plenty of storage and room in the back. It gets great gas mileage for its size (we get 29.2 mpg, even with a lot of city driving). We really like the infotainment system with Apple Carplay/Android Auto and the controls on the steering wheel. We are also impressed by how quiet the ride is. The engine shuts off at red lights to save fuel, and the transition isn't completely seamless but you get used to it. The confidence & convenience package is a must, I think, if you get the LT - blind spot sensors, heated seats, and the garage remote are all features we like a lot. We got an outrageous deal on the vehicle, so that's a big plus for us. We also like that it's designed by an American car company. We had a minor initial quality issue but no reliability issues through 20000+ miles.

I purchased my vehicle in the beginning of May when i test drove it i saw no problem.... liking the vehicle i bought it and heading home and driving on the highway i noticed a lot more noise for the wind coming through my window. The day after I contacted the dealership to let them know what was going on and they told me it was just the doors they do that and the radio should cover the noise while driving. So a week pass and we had got rain and the next day I noticed water drainage on ALL my doors. I took my car back to the dealership so they could fix it, having it there for 8 hours i thought the problem would be fixed. Left the dealership, well a few days past and it rained ... and again my doors have drainage residue on all doors. Contacted the dealership again, they pick up my car to get worked on and they have had it going on 5 days... I purchased this car brand new with 11 miles on it, I shouldnt be having so many problems like this. Now looking up some problems people have had in the past and they also stated complaints about the vehicle draining from the windows. If i would have know I would have never purchased the car and I regret getting it till this day.

The best vehicle in 2018

I have driven several SUV's this year (2017) but nothing across the industry handles better than the AWD 1.5L Turbo 2018 Chevrolet Equinox. They also offer a 2.0L Turbo which gets 28 miles per gallon on the AWD system compared to the 30 + MPG I got while test driving the vehicle. For the 1st time I was able to switch my AWD system on of off which is not an option on the outback i currently drive. The Equinox has active noise cancelling triple seals on the doors and insulation in the wheel wells to make it the quietest vehicle on the road i have ever been in. Its a shame i cant implement all that into my house and have to listen to my kids screaming and crying all day. Back to the vehicle... I was able to enable the remote window operation and by holding down the unlock button the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox rolled down all the windows within seconds a feature i have never seen on any other vehicle in the market.

The Front seats are Not for an adult man. The front seats are too small and too firm. The Cushion needs 2 more inches for thigh support and wider bolsters. The Backrest needs to be wider and softer bolsters. I feel like I am riding on the seat and not in the seat. Is this a child seat???? GM needs to fire the seat design engineer and seat comfort engineer.

Turbo Troubles??

I am driving a 2018 Chevy Equinox 1.5L Turbo DOHC 4-Cyl SIDI VVT. A year ago when it was new it went into the shop four times (three problems). The dealer service shop never really gave any good descriptions with their main saying being "we have never had a problem with this before...........". First time - engine light came on and warning showed that engine power greatly reduced. Car kept running but very slow acceleration. Had to take to dealer to have it reset - none of the extras such as remote start works with the engine light on. Next time was something with a vent tube out of the gas tank - they said it must have been hit by a rock flying up and cut the line - charged over a $1000 for a car with 7000 miles. Next time was another gas tank vent problem they said was plugged - repaired under warranty - two trips to get it repaired as they did not have the part. Today, the same engine light problem. Car kept running but sluggish since engine power was greatly reduced. Have to take it in again to get it reset. It was cold out but was running for two hours before the engine light came on - same as last year. This is a company fleet car and I would never buy a Chevy turbo car on my own. Not a fan of this car at all. Would also like to hear if anyone else had similar problems??

As people get larger why do the car makers make the seat smaller? We have had several Equinox beginning with their first year out. Last one was an LS fully loaded 2014. My wife recently leased a 2018. First we noticed was the front seats were 5-6” shorter. Why? Also the back of the front seats were narrower? This makes for an uncomfortable ride especially on long trips. I have a 2010 Traverse and the front seats are wonderful. It’s like sitting in a Lazy-Boy when driving. I would have to guess the front seats of the 2018 Equinox were fashioned for someone under 135lbs or less. I sure hope GM goes back to larger seats as we are already talking about looking at other brands when our lease expires due to this problem.

2018 Equinox

Just bought a new Equinox 2.0 turbo. Drives well, good acceleration, comfortable. My complaint (with a learning curve here) is the back-up system and navigation. Navigation is limited to OnStar (subscription and no map) or your phone - Missing my VW navigation system. The back-up camera sound is low and the radio does not mute while backing up. I already hit a telephone pole because there was no warning I could hear and the learning curve - it was much closer than it looked . The Equinox is basically the same size as my VW Sportwagen except it's on steroids - same seating capacity, same cargo space BUT it does have a lift gate , the seats are flat when down, and I appreciate the higher ground clearance. I just have 125 miles on it so far and will adapt to all this new technology. Update: 2020 - the car has had no repairs - just maintenance. After I purchased this car, I had the navigation system changed to a Pansonic (by the dealer) but the radio is still bad. There are leather seats (cost extra to change) and roof rack (only crossbars -which is really what you want(?). I have hauled doors/cabinets/bricks and concrete with no problem (the back has a good dog cover and several blankets to protect the leather and inside). Driving comfort is good and it's easy to reach the accessory buttons. My daughter now would like the same or similar car. The mileage has hit 29 on the highway and remains about 24 in town. Update 2022: Mileage has lowered to 22ish consistently. Get up and go on the highway is still awesome. Other than nails in tires/dings/and a new battery, this car works quite well. I am lusting after a hybrid but for now this is a good car. Update 2024 - Only very minor issues with this vehicle - still runs well and the pickup off a ramp onto the highway is still great. Mileage stays around 22 city /30 highway.

Pervious 2016 and 2014 terrain owner

I purchased a 2018 equinox 11/30/17. I have previously owned a 2014 and 2016 terrain .I've never had any complaints about those previous cars. I love the looks of the new equinox but the front seats are horribly uncomfortable .They are hard and the power button does not unjust the bottom tilt back enough. The seats are giving me back pain around town,I cannot imagine it on a trip. Both my terrains had the most comfortable seats I ever owned . The next problem is I'm noticing the transmission at red lights, it almost feels like it stalls then when you give it the gas it hesitates to go kinda like the transmission slips. I've only owned this car a few days today's December 2 I'm really wondering if I can take it back . The start stop button is dumb if the door does not it automatically unlock. You still need your keys to unlock the car .you also cannot lock your car with the extra set of keys inside of it. What happens when your battery dies. Glad I'm just a lease and not a long-term owner . Like they tried to compete with electric car this feature but fails that it only halfway works. The car also feels like it's going to stall at stop signs and hesitates when you accelerate to go you can feel the transmission slip I assume. The front seats are horribly hard the bottom does not tilt far enough back. I really wanted to love this car a lot of new features are great in the looks are much better but they have some improvements to do .Owner of 2 terrains previously ,2014 and 2016 that I loved and never had one complaint. I am disappointed 😢

I got rid of this car. Went back to a CRV and love it. Good riddance to the Equinox. Update to review below. I’ve had my car for 8 months now and have a little over 10,000. I still like the looks and the turbo but still despise the auto shut off. Despise is not a strong enough word for it. I will never buy another car that doesn’t provide an option to turn it off. The squeaky brakes I mentioned below ended up being a real pain. They had to order new parts that took weeks to get in. Good news is they haven’t squeaked since. I did not feel comfortable driving it in the snow. I missed the AWD of my Honda CRV. And just this weekend my rear wiper works when it feels like it. Dont plan to have this car for long. This is my first Chevy and I love the looks of it. I’ve had my Equinox for 3 months and have about 3,500 miles on it. The turbo has great pickup on the highway and the mileage is pretty good for the size of the car. There’s also very little road noise and the seats are comfortable. Had an issue the first week with the side detection lights in the mirrors not working and a message on my dash telling me to have it serviced. Took it in and they did a software update and it hasn’t happened again. Now I have a squeeky brake pedal I’m going to have to have fixed. My biggest complaint is the auto shut off. I HATE IT. I pull up to the parking garage at work and have to badge in and out. For the 3 seconds it takes to do that the stupid thing shuts off. I pull into my garage at home and it shuts off as I stop and restarts when I put it in park. This is absolutely ridiculous. How is this saving gas??? How long will it be before the starter needs replaced. I do put it in neutral at stop lights so it won’t do this but if they insist on putting this in vehicles then they should also install an override so drivers have the option of shutting it off. I know some cars do offer this and if I had known about this when I looked at it, I probably would not have bought this car.

I purchased the '18 Equinox LT for $21,100. What a great deal! The fuel economy averages between 38-41 MPH on the highway, 32-35 in the city. The peppy 1.5 Turbo is great for acceleration vs the previous model. I have no problems with the front seats. I put over 7,000 miles on the Equinox in 3 months and have no complaints about comfort. The rear leg room is also impressive.

If the highway is smooth as glass, my Equinox rode as smooth as any quality automobile. However, when it came to rough surface such as cracks, shallow dips or holes, the car practically beat me to death with hard jolts. I ended up with a headaches and pain in the spine. Seats are like sitting in a bucket. GM is proud of the new "stiff suspension" they built into the car and it sucks. I drove the car 175 miles and could take no more. I did a buy-back.

Turbo engine trouble

Has anyone else who owns a 2018 Chevy equinox have trouble with the car going into limp mode? This happened to us at 4500 miles and then again at 8,200. We were finally told today that there are some issues with the turbo engines. Something with a breather tube when moisture gets in it freezes. We are very disappointed in this vehicle that we purchased new and already have had mechanical issues on the road. Today was in sub zero weather. A person should not have to worry about having trouble with a new vehicle in 14 Below weather as I did today.

Bought this car in June 2018.. It has about 3,000 miles. It is good on gas.. It is very noisy.. If anyone has a hearing problem...don't buy this car. My husband can never hear me the first time. Too much road noise..Not enough insulation... I am not a fan of the car shutting off when you stop at the light or any thing else. It is a very uncomfortable feeling for me and I have not gotten used to it ... I am not happy owning this car and may have to trade it ... It is sort of like getting the cheap seats at the concert... Buyers interested in this car should really drive it for longer than a test drive ...

Overall the 2018 Equinox I leased is great in some things and poor in others. I don't like the front seats. They are hard and too small and I am not a large person. I had leased a 2015 Equinox. The ride and comfort of that car was way above that of the 2018. I"ve had cars for over 55 years and everyone of them have been a Chevy except for when they still made the Oldsmobile. I will have to rethink my options when it comes time to lease a new car. I think it will be a change in brand.

Pleasantly surprised with acceleration. Peppy and responsive 1.5T engine. Large cargo area and spacious back seat foot area. If you’re leasing the car get everything in writing prior to signing papers. Dealer attempted to add additional fees at last moment.

I hadn't owned a GM vehicle since the early 90's and now I remember why. I bought the top of the line Equinox in July 2018. After the first 4 or 5 months it developed an annoying vibration at speeds about 30 mph, felt like driving on a bumpy road at lower speeds, a vibration at freeway speeds. Took it to the dealer, asking them to check wheel balance, suspension components for loose items, or maybe a failing shock. They old me it's because of the nine-speed transmission shifting into high gear causing the engine to lug. I verified for myself by manually keeping the transmission in a lower gear (and thus a higher RPM) the problem still existed. Took it to the dealer again, explaining this. They checked wheel balance (nothing else) and said it was within spec. Being suspicious, I took it to an independent shop. They verified balance was within spec. Grew more unhappy with the ride every time I drove it and decided to take my losses, and traded in for a new Honda Passport. Much better vehicle in all aspects. Trade-in value was awful, lost almost half its original value. After this experience I doubt I'll ever get another GM vehicle.

I have had my 2018 Equinox Premier for 12 months and have put 13500 miles on it. The great rebates and promotions at the time were the main factor in my purchase. I have a Toyota Avalon as well but I try not to compare the two because they are completely different vehicles with different goals. The Avalon is the ultimate road cruiser and the Equinox is an SUV with all wheel drive for getting around in the snow and weather in the northern plains. I like the Equinox. It has all of the safety features you want or need, it's comfortable with both heated and cooled leather, the sunroof is great, and I have averaged 29.8 mpg over the 13500 miles that I have owned it. General Motors products have improved over the years and this might be one of their best efforts. Take care of it, MAINTAIN IT, and you should get years of enjoyment out of it. One more thing - check out the dealer service department before you buy. Ask around and check reviews of the service department on the internet. That small amount of extra money that you pay at a more reputable dealer for the new car will be worth it. Update 2/12/2022 - I have owned the Equinox for four years and 66,000 miles. Other than regular service and one set of tires I have done nothing to the vehicle. I have had zero problems and zero complaints. I have averaged 29.2mpg over the time that I have owned the Equinox. I would buy another without hesitation. Feb 2024 I'm up to 104000 on my Equinox without any problems. I've kept up with recommended maintenance. I enjoy driving and I'm planning on going 200000 miles with it.

Regret buying

We regret buying the 2018 Equinox. The reason why we regret buying it is that we found out two months after purchasing the car that the fuel gauge was not reading correctly. Took it to the dealership and they said that GM knew about the problem since October 2017 and have not fixed it yet and are not warning consumers about the car problem. We contacted GM and they said that they're looking into it and that there's nothing that they can do right now for us. And the only way to keep track of our fuel is we have to keep resetting the trip gauge. This is very inconvenient for me being a mother having to worry if my car is going to run out of gas while driving it I should not have to do this with a brand new car.

Chevy Settles for the Field Goal-Again

My wife and I are both tall and large so our choices in vehicles has much to do with ingress, egress and do we fit. Our previous SUV, a 2015 Equinox had been a very good vehicle, even surviving two accidents involving fairly major front end damage without developing a single squeak or rattle. Also, in 33k miles the only unscheduled service was to repair a sticky door lock switch. The 2.4L 4 cylinder was adequate, delivered 28-30 MPG highway but just 21 MPG around our small town. When our lease was up, we decided on another AWD Equinox LT with the base 1.4L turbo 4 clay and 6 speed auto. My review is based on 5,100 miles and six months of ownership. Improvements over the previous generation are many.Much better outward visibility and sight lines enhanced by the blind spot monitoring system. Nearly perfect control and display layout. GM kicks butt in this area of this design. Better sound system. Much better climate control system. Better steering feel and a tighter turning circle. Bigger, better side mirrors. Great brakes. The power lift tailgate. The small turbo 4 has very good low end power and is generally up to the task. However the auto stop system for the engine is very annoying if you are driving in stop and go traffic. Luckily, it is easy to defeat- just put the shift control in manual and select 6th gear. The transaxle will still function in fully automatic mode but the engine will not shut off. So far we are seeing 25 MPG around town but just 28 MPG on the highway. The biggest issue with the small 1.4L engine is its lack of top end power! No guts at all above 5,000 RPM which makes passing at highway speeds take a LONG time. If you drive on interstates most of the time, opt for the 2.0L , no wait, bad idea since it will raise the price by several thousand dollars and the Equinox is in no way worth that much money. My biggest complaints are the seats and the reductions in interior space! The front seats are way too small, especially the lower seat cushion. No thigh support at all. Also, there is about 2 inches less leg room than the 2015 which is a big deal to anyone over 6 feet tall. The back passengers get less room too. Worst of all, the rear seat no longer adjusts. In out 2015, I moved the back seat forward and could haul my wife’s wheelchair without folding the seat backs. The 2018 requires the rear seats to be folded flat to fit a wheelchair thereby making it a two passenger SUV. WHY did GM reduce the interior length while not reducing the overall length of the SUV. Stupid. Our particular Equinox is one of a group delivered with infotainment displays which do not respond to the dash light dimmer properly. The display is always super bright, blinding the driver at night! I complained to Chevy via their Facebook page and was finally directed back to my dealer for a software update. The update allows the infotainment display to dim about 50 percent. Better, but it is still too bright on dark, rainy nights and is a real safety issue. We have also experienced some issues with the engine stumbling and making odd vibrations from time to time. Also, the drivers side front suspension makes loud booming noises from time to time and the car pulls to the left all the time. So far the dealer service department can’t find any issues. I’m betting the upper strut bearing is defective and will fail before it hits 10K.

Traded in my 2013 Ford Explorer for a 2018 equinox and I have never regretted anything more. This car is not comfortable to drive or ride in and the seats are hard and too skinny. Had it for 10 months now and every time I drive below 15 mph it starts jerking and acting like it wants to stall out. Not sure if this has to do with the auto stop, which I also hate, but guess I will be putting my less than a year old car in the shop now. Biggest POS ever and I can't wait to get rid of it. Do not buy this car!

tet drove a base model with 2.0 turbo. Chassis is good, nice ride and responsive handling, steering and brakes are responsive with good feel. Transmission was smooth, and the engine powerful, though a touch trashy when pushed hard.A little more road noise than I might have expected but not too objectionable. Biggest drawback was the seats, both driver and passenger front were too tight across the lower ribs. My wife and I are both in shape athletes, so we were surprised by how the side bolsters felt. Seat bottoms were fine for us, but larger people may find them intrusive. Salesman suggested that the leather seat models are a little less restrictive, had a quick seat in them and he might be right. I immediately noticed that the steering wheel profiling is a little different, so different seats are certainly plausible
