Great ride

Have had this 2016 Equinox for three weeks now and totally love it. The ride is fantastic. Both my wife and I have commented how our legs don't feel like rubber after getting out from a trip. Car handles wonderfully with great steering and comfortable ride. So far I have been averaging slightly over 27 MPG on the highway here in New England and better than 23 MPG around town. The 4 cyl. 2.4 engine is great and has plenty of power to handle the hills and can easily pass on the highway without punching the pedal. Could not be happier with this choice. Only con is that my wife is short and cannot reach the back hatch to close it. Didn't want to get the LTZ package. Oh well...minor issue and made her a grabber to reach the hatch hand hold. After owing it for over 6 months it's the best vehicle I've owned. Now owned it for a year and it continues to impress me. Mileage on highway if about 27+ and local driving is running about 24. Handled great in the winter snows with the AWD. No cons... All good. After two years still fantastic. Highway mileage averages 28mpg. Have had no issues with anything. It continues to be the best especially when loading it up for our weekly trips to our summer vacation home. As we enter 2019 I am still extremely happy with this vehicle. I have had no issues that have need attention and still getting the same mileage as before. Best vehicle I have owned in many years. We're now at February of 2020 and all is still perfect. No issues with anything. Combined mileage (all seasons) is still around 24-25 MPG. I'm retired now so less annual mileage. February 2021 and running perfectly. Mileage still 24-25 combined. Mileage at 24102. Retired, so a lot less traveling. Very happy with this choice of vehicle. February 2022 and approaching 29,000 miles. Still getting same mileage ratings and love the vehicle. Best combination of a car and a truck as we go camping and need the cargo space.

From Jeep back to GM

I just purchased the 2016 Equinox LT with the 2.4L engine and AWD (Patroit Blue Metallic) I also just came from a similar vehicle, which was a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 2.4L 4x4 (Eco Green). The Jeep was my second Jeep and my last! Chrysler's dealer network is just not as accomodating, well-training, and educated as Chevy's. My conclusion... "See ya later Jeep!". The Equinox is superb and I can honestly say it has the best legroom in its class, period! The interior is ergonomically sound with great technology, comfort and fit/finish. Let me criticize a lot of reviewers out there. Some are customers and others are Journalists...The complaints about the 2.4 are ludicrous. If you have ever driven a 4 cylinder engine and know what to expect/not expect from one, you'll be fine with the performance of this vehicle. The 2.4 and 6 speed combo feels just as good as my 2.4 and 9 speed in the Cherokee. Trust me, you can pass people on the highway and you DONT need to floor it to do so. It has plenty of pep and way better gas mileage than the V6. Unless your towing something, just save yourself the money and get the 4. Don't listen to all these reviewers that want an SUV but also want their SUV to accelerate like a lamborghini. The Equinox 2.4 is just fine!!!! Also, if anyone is wondering I test drove the following before ridding myself of a problematic Jeep: - Rav4 - Escape - Edge - Murano - Rogue - Tuscon - Santa Fe - Sportage - Forester - CX9 - Equinox Going back to the legroom. The most important aspect of us choosing the Equinox, for anyone in a similar situation, was legroom. I am six ft. with long legs and am not comfortable in many small SUVs. We had it narrowed down to the Rogue, which we took for an overnight, and the Equinox. The Equinox had the best legroom in its class by far! I can scoot up to the wheel or have my legs fully extended (with boots on). Also BTW. My dad has a 2012 Equinox, My Mom had a 2010 and just bought a 2015 last years as well. Both have no problems with theirs. Highly satisfied with this vehicle and would recommend to anyone!

The LT 2.4 4 cylinder is perfect for us. Gas mileage is great. Very comfortable. Instruments are very easy to use. Incredible how much passenger room there is in the front and back seats. Plenty of cargo area.

I love my Equinox, 2nd time leasing. Go for the upgrades because it's worth it and better quality/feel. I can't get more value in upgrade options for the price, compared to other SUV'S in its class. It drives great, very well made and still presents brand new, one year into my lease. Very comfortable front seats with netted soft clothe. Never had any problems with either of my Equinoxes. I may go for the top of the line luxury options, next one I get as I upgrade each time.

This is a very nice riding vehicle - comfort in both seats and lots of cargo capacity if needed. Handled highway to panhandle great. No issues at all . Quiet and comfortable. Eco button saves even more gas. The Bluetooth was very much appreciated.

Two weeks with the 2016 Chevy Equinox AWD 6 Cyl.

I test drove the 4 cylinder model and thought it was sluggish especially climbing hills. I opted for the 6 cyl. which has about a 100 more hp than the 4 cyl. model. The power is great now, the car seems more solid and has a quiet and smooth ride. Options I like are the driver convenience package, sun sound & navigation package, rear liftgate power (which gives you the homelink option for opening your garage doors), and the driver confidence package. The premium sound is nice to listen to and the sound is even throughout the vehicle. I especially like the driver visibility and height at which you are sitting while driving. So far I averaged 20 mpg on the first tank of fuel, but I logged quite a bit of time idling in my driveway learning all the features on this suv. Just two added features would be nice on the Equinox and they would be: 1) heat vents for the rear passengers and 2) an audible speed alarm which you can set to go off it you exceed the predetermined speed setting. The ride is so smooth and with the v6 power, you can easily exceed the highway speed limits and not realize it. I added mud flaps, Husky floor mats and door sill protectors to keep the vehicle looking nice for a longer period of time. Update: Having owned the Equinox for a year now, I figure I would give an update on my experience with it. First, I still love everything about the 2016 Equinox, but there are two items I would like to interject here. One, three times in the past year, while driving and with the usb port playing songs and the navigation working, the console locked up. The navigation froze and the radio would play the same two seconds of the same song over and over. At that point, you cannot turn the volume down, or turn the radio off, or adjust anything on it. That scenario lasts for about 10 to 15 minutes and then the radio shuts down. (What a relief when it does!) I was told I need a software update on the main computer which I will get when I bring the car in for the next oil change. I have about 7,500 miles on it now. The only other thing I would like to mention is that when driving on the highway, it seems I have to make a lot of minor steering adjustments to stay in a lane. I have had many other vehicles and rarely had to make these frequent adjustments. It keeps you on your toes, especially if you are on the highway with vehicles on both sides of you. Other than that I love the car and would buy one again in a minute. Update after 2 years of ownership: Still love the Equinox and it handles great in the snow. No problems at all!

I'm a traveling salesman and spend quite a bit of time on the road. I wanted a vehicle with decent comfort and fuel mileage, but even more important was passenger comfort. No other small or even medium SUV has the rear legroom of an Equinox. I can fit 4 good size adults comfortably. The sliding rear seat makes all the difference. If I need more cargo space, I can slide the seat all the way forward and have a large cargo area... Or conversely, slide it back and have massive leg room for passengers. The one downside so far is the navigation... It is very clumsy to operate and will only hold a maximum of 30 favorite destinations. Even my $100 TomTom held 100 favorites.

We miss these four accessories the most on our top of the Equinox line SUV. (1) the CD player (2) the glove box light and... (3) the heated steering wheel. A very poor decision on the part of GM management to eliminate these items. Well now I see the heated steering wheel in the 2018 model as an option. (4) turn signal in the outside rear view mirrors.

I want to start by admitting I am a little bias coming from a minivan that offered space and those little things I just assumed where standard on a vehicle. To begin, I bought my Equinox based on different reviews I read and the commericals, very compelling. So I take full responsiblity for not looking closer and asking a few extra questions. Firstly, the gas milesage is horrible. I tried using the "eco" button but that seems to open a valve and even more gas falls out. My minivan is 10 years old and doesn't use as much gas. Secondly, the backseat does not have air vents. In order to cool off or heat up a car, you have to either freeze or burn the front passengers. WHY?? I did not pay attention there were no vents in the back. This and the gas mileage are what bothers me most and I would give the care back tomorrow if I could. Thirdly, storage is non-existent, if you want to grocery shop for a large family, not for you. Fourth, I test drove a 2015 but bought a 2016. Where is my CD player, who moved it. I feel this designed is to force you to pay for Sirrus XFM, I dont want to. Overall, I am not happy. I did not mark it down pass the three stars because I should have done better homework.

Edmunds is out of their minds.

We came from a 2013 base model LS Equinox that was a lease. As low rent as it was the features for the time were impressive and lacked nothing we really wanted. Its glaring weakness was the 2.4 engine that always had to be beaten hard to get anywhere and we didn't have AWD or leather which we wanted on the next car. I tried to get another car, I tested the CR-V which rode harshly and was loud inside with a terrible radio set up but did have the great magic seats, Honda does do a great interior. Still we almost bought it till we learned about the cvt vibration problems that most owners have, dodged a bullet on that. The CX-5 Mazda...I just don't get Edmunds praise, its a lot of money for a bumpy, harsh and noisy ride with poor interior space and a center stack that is unreadable in motion. Neither of these was especially quick compared to the 4cyl Equinox either and the rear seat room for people on the Chevy is unbeatable, its limosine levels of legroom. So we got a v6 LTZ AWD and it was love at first drive. The acceleration is much better than the 2.4, taking care of our major issue with our 2013. It drives how I want the family truckster to drive, smooth ride, relaxed and quiet with plenty of get up and go. Why Edmunds praises jittery and stiff rides in a family car I can't comprehend, its not a track day machine guys and nobody wants their kids, or dogs, puking in the back because of the ride. The Equinox is secure handling and predictable, never feels dangerous and can be driven all day without penalty to your body or ears. The LTZ v6 suspension is a bit firmer than our 2013 but not painfully and has real hydraulic steering with much better feel and feedback than the electric units most common today including in the 4cyl Equinox. My only issues with our new Chevy is the warning signal overload. I like the mirror light blind spot warnings and the backing up cross traffic alert but the frontal collision alarm goes off at random sometimes, first time almost made me stain the new leather so it was disabled very quickly, at least you can turn it off. The lane change warning has never been turned on because besides being annoying its dangerous. If I have to swerve to avoid something I don't want to be confused if the alarm going off is because there is a car in my blindspot or just because I am crossing a lane line. At least it does not have any automatic braking features. It may sound callous but I'd rather risk mowing someone down than having the system misread a road shadow or raccoon, slam on the brakes and get me rear ended by a bus killing everyone in the car. So take Edmunds review with a grain of salt, think about how you want your family and crap hauler to be used. You want safe, quiet and comfortable or a track day special that rides like a '69 Scout? Its as bad as Consumer Reports riding down on the Jeep Wrangler every year because it doesn't ride like a Cadillac, they can't review a car for what it is intended to do only what they believe the only acceptable car is. To them every degree deviation from Honda Accord is a point off, regardless of what that car is intended to do. Edmunds seems to do the same but perhaps their benchmark is the MX-5 Miata.

Transmission gone @ 448 miles

Was disappointed--BUT dealer has redeemed! This is a cute SUV, but I had the LT, 6 cylnder exactly 2 weeks and the 3, 5, R drum in the transmission went. Prior to the car dying at a busy intersection without warning, I had gone through 3 tanks of gas in 2 weeks (dealership states because of the transmission?) I smelled gas when I would use the remote start. Rear view backup camera was foggy at night. Remote buttons on key were so hard to push it was difficult to turn on the remote start or open the doors quickly. HOWEVER, I have been in touch with the dealer and they will swap out the car for another new vehicle of equal value. I am very satisfied with that outcome and I am willing to give the Equinox another chance!! Thank you!

The Best of the worst

Rental cars are typically what they are, cars that are beaten on, and nothing special, but this one is about the best GM vehicle i have driven (car only has 1125 miles). The panel fitment on the body is terrible, interior is cheap, and the plastics are 1970's quality, but the transmission is the best automatic 4cyl trans that GM has to offer, the shifts are crisp in comparison to other GM products, the engine is unrefined, and i would absolutely opt for the v6, but it's better than the turbo offerings. Low end torque is there and throttle response is good enough to drive in city traffic or cruise on the highway. The seats are big, comfortable if not a little too soft, the interior seating quality will never last as long as the car, but then people who buy GM products typically don't expect them to last hundreds of thousands of miles either (if they did, buy a Pushrod GM product). The SUV is good on gas averaging 24MPG Eco mode in city traffic, and 33MPG eco mode on the highway, not too bad. Looks are a subject of taste, but the front of the thing looks like a joke, the high trim line over the front, just makes it look weird to me, the older ones were way better looking IMO. As far as the entertainment system, it is cheap, the speakers are cheap, the head unit is like every other GM delco branded unit, but it is lacking features that exist on higher end cars, or upscale models, it's Ok to drive, the seating position is more car like than the Buick Encore or Chevy Trax, but the SUV still feels top heavy. The Big tires, smaller wheels on the LT trim line make the steering very vague, and not very positive on where the wheels are facing.. It honestly feels twitchy. Personally, i am very critical when it comes to cars, and each person will have their own tastes, expectation, and personalities, but from a critical outlook i will say that this is not the best car on the road, and frankly for the price, it isn't even in the middle as per where i would rate it against other offerings, but.. It is one of the better GM products.. Maybe not in the looks, maybe not in the exterior build quality, or interior fit and finish, but the engine, and transmission feel like one of the better products, and when buying american, you want something that will run, and be easy to fix. This is something i would give a good rating for, the ease of repair, and the quality of the engineering feel like they are there..

I do tons of research, and the 2013 to 2017 Equinox, GMC Terrain are one of the best. My 2013 GMC Terrain towed a 3000 pound boat every year for 6 years, and at 148,000 miles I decided on a new car...and got its twin, a 2016 Equinox. Both had 4 cyl. No rattles, super safe (i read the details, and no Toyota or Honda comes close to the 2016 Equinox in a crash. I dig under the star ratings for the actual data and look at the forces, the GMs always do better than Honda or Toyota). Big rear seat. yes, there is plenty of plastic...and it doesnt scratch, cleans easily and lasts forever...good for a family hauler and saturday chore machine.

My Equinox has been to the dealership three times for the same problem: Fuel Odor in the Cabin of the vehicle! The dealership has been very accommodating; however, I live 130 miles round-trip from the dealership and those are miles that are taken away from my warranty. The odor is sporadic; however, I have an 11-month old grandchild that I transport on occasion and I don't want her (or anyone) to be exposed to the odor of raw gasoline!! They have yet to replicate it; however, within five miles from leaving the dealership I had to make an abrupt stop and the cabin filled with the odor of gasoline! HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM??? HAS IT BEEN CORRECTED??? HELP PLEASE!!!

Got the 2016 Equinox LT AWD in January 2016. Wife loved it and it seemed a great little SUV for her. We live in Iowa so we went with the AWD to get around in the snow. We went with the 2.4 to save a little money and gas. 182 hp seemed sufficient for a smaller SUV and gets it around town great, but the first time I drove it on the highway, I regretted not having gone with the V6. Passing performance is the worst out of all the vehicles I have ever owned! In order to pick up enough speed to pass in a reasonable distance above 50 MPH, I have to nearly floor it, revving the engine to 5 or 6,000 RPM. Even when floored, the engine screams at nearly 7,000 RPM, yet it barely accelerates. The AWD works great in the snow, even 10-12 inches of heavy, wet snow wasn't a problem. I'm a big guy 6'3" 300 lbs. and the interior was not meant for me. I can fit in it fine and there is plenty of leg room, even in the back seat, but the front seats are narrow and I feel cramped between the door and the center console. I hate the layout of the controls for the stereo and climate control. Maybe it would be okay if I got used to it, but I just can't stand having 2 dozen buttons that I never use, hiding the few that I'm searching for. MPG is around 24-25 combined, mostly highway. It's currently at about 55,000 miles and has developed a humming/grinding noise in the front end that gets louder turning right and softer turning left, probably a wheel bearing. It has also developed a transmission leak and I found out that there is no transmission dipstick to check the fluid level. It's still under warranty, so we shouldn't have any problems getting it fixed. Our lease is up in a few months and we originally planned on buying it after the lease, but at this point, we are almost certainly getting something different.

Mine is equipped with the 300hp V6, loads of power and is a pleasure to drive. The 4 cyl just doesn't have what it takes for me. Opt for the V6. Nice quite ride and handles good. Nice driver on the long trips. Ours is fully loaded and love the theater effect lighting at night. Overall a great SUV. I highly recommend it.

If you value rear seat room for adults over cargo space, look at the Equinox. The seats are comfortable and the ride is smooth. Most everything is fine, but not spectacular. There are compact SUV's with more pep and fuel economy, but the Equinox is reliable.

It is the best in class! I test drove so many others ,but, nothing beats this one Build quality is exceptional. very comfortable ride, and, minimal road noise inside. Only down side is that a touch screen responds little slow.

Excessive oil consumption

I have a 2106 Equinox and it is just months out of warranty and because of excessive oil consumption the timing chain jumped bending some valves and cracked a piston. The estimate for repair is $7000.00! There are less than 73,000 miles on the engine. Neither the local dealership where I bought it or GM think this is a problem and is acceptable thing for their engines.

Keep an eye on your center cap with the Chevrolet emblem ours fell off with less than 15000 miles and I was told this is not under warranty so I guess I will have to purchase a whole wheel cover should have known. The dealer covered it thanks classic Chevrolet Beaumont Texas.

We were intending tp purchase equinox, but nothing on 4 cylinder offered dual control ac. One of us prefers 60-65 degrees, while the other prefers 70-75 degrees. We decided that was essential looking toward our next 45 years. So we chose Ford Edge SEL

I have owned for over a year now and have no complaints with the vehicle. The overall mileage is over 27 mpg. I am still pissed about not have a CD player available. Chevy deciding what I can and can't have in my vehicle is complete BS. I spend a lot of cash creating CD's with the music I want to listen to. Because of this, I will never purchase another Chevy. All the auto makers produce good vehicles and from now on I will only purchase from a auto maker that caters to customers. I have to wonder what kind of deal Chevy has made with pay for listen music stations. My only complaint is really about Chevrolet and not the Equinox itself. Like a damn fool when I test drove it, I didn't think to check for a CD player because "what car doesn't come with one these days" Equinox is part of that answer. Apparently Chevrolet has decided that I don't need or want one. I spend a considerable amount of money making CD's with the music I wanted to hear on each one. Now Chevy tells me "tough sh_t, we will decide what you can listen to and how you will listen to it. The dealer helped me set up what is called Pandora to listen to music I like. What a bunch of BS. I have to make sure I have my smart phone with me just to hear my music. My last 4 vehicles have been Chevrolet or GMC. that won't happen again. I will decide what equipment I have on the vehicle I pay for, not Chevrolet.

I have been having problems with backup camera making loud boom sound and freezing up while driving every since I purchased car 3 yrs ago. I have always had my car serviced at Genesis Chevrolet on Gratiot in Eastpointe and complained about it and they claimed they couldn’t find a problem with it. I have also had an engine replacement. Thankful Warranty Company blessed me with a new one. I had 78,000 miles when replaced. I have owned 2 Ford Taurus brand new and never replaced a motor. Disappointed with Genesis Chevrolet since my warranty is over and no return phone calls. This dealership sold me the car. Whole dashboard freezes and I have to find somewhere safe to pull over to cut the engine off and start it backup. The employee Sam Shepherd advised me to bring it in when it does that the next time. If he heard the loud boom it’s wouldn’t be possible, especially since I live a distance from the dealership, I am disappointed with the dealership and car.

Nice but a couple of premature problems

Bought my car CPO 2/2019 so I’ve had it for over two and a half years now. Recently I’ve had two issues that, in my opinion, are rather premature for a car this age with fewer than 57k miles. I have lost all radio reception and my ac condenser is disintegrating. I’ve purchased two mast antennas for replacement but neither solved the problem. I’ve been quoted anywhere from $500-$1000 to find the problem and fix it. Thank you anyway but I’ll keep listening to Pandora. Quoted $500 for condenser replacement. I’ve owned many cars and have never had these problems on cars of any age. Thank you GM for probably making me a Honda or Toyota convert. Bought this car for its stellar reliability but it has failed.

Extremely uncomfortable seats

Tyson, 12/25/2019
2016 Chevrolet Equinox LT 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 6A)
5 of 10 people found this review helpful

I thought the seats were tolerable when I first bought the car, but for long drives they are absolutely torturous. No amount of adjustment makes a difference. I don’t know whose body these seats are made for. My body is hardly atypical. I’m 6 feet tall with an average/athletic build. Yet no matter how I try to sit the lumbar support is in the wrong spot, my butt sinks back into the seat so much that it puts most of my body weight on my thighs, and (perhaps worst of all) the whole seat just makes me feel constrained/trapped. There are these hard boosters on either side of your thighs that prevent freedom of movement/adjustment. Maybe it’s partly because I’m a bit of squirmy person, but, seriously, these seats should be listed as torture devices. It has been 3 years with this hunk of junk. I cannot wait until the day that I have enough money saved to get rid of this car.

Great Car but entertainment system lacking

Luke, 12/30/2016

I love the car itself. It handles great and interior is spacious and comfortable. I decided to spend a little extra money for the heated seats, remote start and upgraded entertainment system. The heated seats and remote start are a really nice feature. I'm extremely disappointed in the Chevy Mylink Entertainment system that I paid extra for. The bluetooth only works some of the time and when using GPS on the phone, it doesn't speak over bluetooth. Then the Apple Carplay is featured on all 2016 models except the Equinox. When talking to Chevy, they said there won't be any updates to add that feature. I know many other car brands that produce upgrades and the Hyundai models all got the Apple Carplay update for free on 2015 and 2016 models. Overall I'm happy with the car but I would not suggest paying the additional price for the entertainment package which ended up being a complete waste of money.

I had my equinox for 2 years just recently traded it in. Not because it was a bad car or unreliable it was actually great ! The gas mileage was incredible I had a 30 minute commute to work and I only filled my tank twice a week if that. I never had any issues just routine maintenance. I sold mine at 150,000 miles and got a good value for it. It’s very comfortable smooth ride and has a decent amount of space I’ve done 3 moves and the equinox came in handy for that. Great for long distance trips to. 10/10 recommended if your looking for a good daily use suv.

We got this car (2016 Equinox) and THEN discovered no CD. We have loads of music we want to play. I found out it would cost $1000 to fix it. What the heck is that about? All the crap on the screen and way too many options and controls that are not intuitive at all. On longer trips, I take my older car. It has all I want in comfort and electrics. I took a trip in a 2005 Impala and it has a CD - it still works great. The things can't cost Chevy 15 dollars. They should put NO CD on the window in large letters. Bah Humbug. This might be the end of our 60 years loyalty with General Motors. I stopped in at Toyota dealer and checked out a new Camry. They still have a CD player. GM cut a fat hog in the butt when they did this cheap stunt.
