With distinctive styling and a modern interior, the Cadillac XT4 makes a good first impression. The interior is comfortable and spacious, and the infotainment is impressive. But a closer look reveals cost-cutting measures and underwhelming performance. Noise levels, ride and steering all need to improve to reach the standards of the class.

Pros
- Roomy seating and cargo area
- Infotainment system is quick and sharp-looking
Cons
- Ride is busy for a luxury SUV
- Lots of engine and road noise
- Some controls are confusing to use
- Luxury features you'd expect to be standard are optional
What's new
- The XT4 returns largely unchanged for 2022
- Part of the first XT4 generation introduced for 2019
Overview
The 2022 Cadillac XT4 is Cadillac's smallest and lowest-priced luxury SUV. It debuted back for 2019 and carries on into 2022 without any major updates. The XT4 may be small compared to the likes of the Escalade, but it's actually one of the roomier vehicles in its class, offering plenty of passenger and cargo space for the price. The easy-to-use infotainment system is another highlight.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2022 Cadillac XT4 Premium Luxury 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 9A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.10 per gallon for premium unleaded in Virginia.

But there are some downsides too. The ride is stiff, and the engine sounds loud and unrefined. We expect more refinement from a luxury SUV. Other extra-small SUVs such as the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA and GLB, and Volvo XC40 offer a more compelling set of attributes. Performance
6.5/10
How does the XT4 drive? The XT4 packs ample power, enough for quick passing maneuvers, but it's slow off the line (0-60 mph in 7.6 seconds in our tests) and it gets winded at higher speeds. A distinct lack of steering feel and an often slow-witted transmission further hamper the XT4's sporting pretensions. Other qualities, such as braking and handling, are average.
With a light foot, the XT4 stays calm and is usually in the right gear. But more aggressive driving can catch the transmission out, either trying not to downshift or downshifting too many gears at once.

Comfort
6.0/10
How comfortable is the XT4? With a busy, often unsophisticated ride and a surprisingly noisy engine, the XT4 does not represent Cadillac's best effort. There's constant jitter from all four wheels on less-than-perfect roads and a never-ending stream of impacts on rough patches. This look isn't good for a luxury SUV.
Thankfully, the seats are comfortable for a variety of body types and offer plenty of lower lumbar support. Uniform air circulation keeps the cabin evenly warm or cool, aided by the optional heated and ventilated front seats. (The rear seats can also be heated.) But the XT4's engine is loud and unrefined and, in combination with excessive road noise at highway speeds, hardly seems up to traditional Cadillac standards.

Interior
7.0/10
How’s the interior? The XT4 makes a strong initial impression with a stylish and modern interior. But some of the controls seem unnecessary or overthought and difficult to use without errors and frustration. The dash controls are easy to figure out, but the steering wheel buttons and multimedia knob are clumsy.
Hopping in and out of the XT4 is easy thanks to the wide front door openings. The rear door openings aren't as generous, but there's plenty of legroom back there. Headroom gets a bit pinched in the rear seat, especially with the optional panoramic sunroof, but there's enough room for two adults to sit comfortably. The front of the cabin feels open and airy, and it's easy to find a comfortable driving position with good visibility.

Technology
8.0/10
How’s the tech? The XT4's infotainment system is quick, sharp and easy to use. The integrated navigation system looks a bit like Android Auto — a good thing — and the optional Bose audio system is impressive even at high volume. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration comes standard, along with USB and USB-C connections. There's also a wireless charging pad and new wireless functionality for CarPlay and Android Auto if you want to go cable-free. The main drawback is that the multimedia control knob is clumsy and unnecessary; it can only scroll and doesn't work in some menus.
The forward collision warning and adaptive cruise systems are well calibrated and not overly sensitive. However, Cadillac has chosen to bundle electronic driver aids like those into option packages that aren't available on the base trim level. That's disappointing for this class of vehicle.

Storage
7.0/10
How’s the storage? Cargo space is about average for the class. The split rear seats fold nearly flat and enhance versatility. There's also plenty of small storage spaces for drink bottles and personal items up front but less so in the back.
Child seats are easy to install thanks to easily accessible car seat anchors cleverly concealed under the leather upholstery. Large rear-facing seats may require taller drivers or front passengers to scoot up some. An inexpensive optional towing package allows the XT4 to pull up 3,500 pounds, which is about average for the class.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10
How’s the fuel economy? The XT4's EPA-estimated fuel economy is about average for the class. But we struggled to achieve the EPA numbers in our own testing, even with a substantial amount of highway driving. Like many other vehicles in this class, the XT4 requires higher-priced premium fuel.
Value
7.5/10
Is the XT4 a good value? Luxury-car value comes from intangibles that create a premium experience, with price often a secondary concern. But the XT4 competes in a more affordable luxury class, where money is expected to go a bit further. Here, the Cadillac doesn't do much to distinguish itself. Interior quality is a mixed bag — the leather upholstery feels rich and pliable, but it's accompanied by low-grade plastic panels. Fully loaded, this baby Cadillac can cost almost as much as more luxurious SUVs such as the BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC.
Warranty coverage (four years/50,000 miles) is consistent with the class, but powertrain coverage (six years/70,000 miles) is better than most. Roadside assistance coverage is also above average.

Wildcard
6.0/10
With distinctive styling and a sleek interior, the XT4 does a good impression of a compact luxury SUV. But its performance and refinement come up short compared to European and Asian rivals, which are quieter, ride smoother and offer more dynamic performance. There's just not a lot of compelling evidence to land on the XT4. It's a solid choice for buyers who prefer to buy American, although at this price, we'd give serious thought to a fully loaded Buick Encore instead.
Which XT4 does Edmunds recommend?
As with most vehicles, we think the midlevel trim offers the best mix of features and value. We suggest opting for the Premium Luxury model. It adds a number of driver aids, including blind-spot monitoring, that are worth the step up in price.

5/5 stars, From Buick Lacrosse to XT4, not looking back
A. Collin MacDonald,
Premium Luxury 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 9A)
Traded in the 2017 Buick Lacrosse, excellent car, but had some serious problems from the factory, and Buick discontinued this model. We decided to buy an SUV this time, but did not want to buy a large SUV, but something that was smaller, easy to get in and out of, and provided more of a car like ride, with most of the accessories found on the Lacrosse. After looking at several models, … the XT4 was more in line of what we wanted.
My first impressions, easy to drive, excellent visibility, steering was very responsive, and turn radius was excellent. Braking was very good, minimal brake fade, and engine power was very good for a small car. From the drivers perspective, all accessories controls are within easy reach of the driver. However, I do miss the Heads Up Display, our XT4 did not have that option. We chose the Premier Luxury model, as it had all the safety and convivence features that we were looking for coming from a top line Buick. Seats are very comfortable and this SUV has excellent leg room, with the 8-way power adjustable seats, they meet all of our size differences. I am six foot one and wife is five feet, and everything adjusts to the extremes to make driving a pleasure. I found this to actually be quiet and smooth driving, and for us the engine power is enough. Another option we did not get that I wish it had was the telescoping steering wheel, but even without this option the seats adjust just fine for a excellent driving position. Love the automatic power rear hatch back, push button twice opens and push twice closes, you don't have to touch it. Information system is extremely CLEAR video, large screen that is sharp with good color and easy to work. Still has many options that I have not learned yet, as we just purchased the vehicle only a few days ago, Time will tell if this SUV was a good choice, but for now we are extremely pleased with our purchase.
5/5 stars, Cadillac has a Winner With the XT4
Peter,
Sport 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 9A)
XT4 is a small luxury SUV with unbelievable interior room. My 6’ 5” friend sat in Driver’s seat and I was able to sit directly behind him in backseat (I’m 5’ 10”) with room to spare.
Averaging over 29 mpg on the highway.
Great layout of controls - smart combo of buttons, control wheel, and responsive touch screen.
Cool white leather seats with red stitching and black side inserts.
Well … paired turbo 4 engine & 9 speed transmission (quick, smooth shifts).
Quiet interior, good breaks, comfortable ride.
6,100 miles with no issues.
Cadillac has a winner with the XT4.

The Light,
Sport 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 9A)
after driving the vehicle for over a year overall I'm very pleased, as stated before it has all the options I wanted/needed. My only complaint is the vehicle has developed some annoying rattling in the interior roof and driver side door. Have to play my music loud so it's not a distraction but when I want peace and quiet it's very noticeable. Went to service two times and they can't … correct it, disappointed, shouldn't happen in a $50,000 + vehicle. Other than that have had trouble free miles (13,900). Wish it could be fixed.
Have 17,000 miles and still have annoying rattle from the roof, also developed a buzzing noise in the drivers side door, other than that have had trouble free miles. Overall still satisfied although I wish the ride was a little better on rough roads, impacts come crashing through. Would I buy again probably but hope the newer model has a better suspension (magnetic ride). Ater 18,595 miles still have the same dislikes, one other to add is for some reason the 360 camera goes out intermittently, took a picture but when I went for service they said it had to be out when I got there which is kind of silly as it can go out at any time, I would think by showing the picture of what the screen looks like they should be able to troubleshoot. Other than that stil four stars, just wish I didn't have to deal with the squeaky drivers seat and those annoying rattles from the roof and drivers side door panel. Lease is up in September of 2023.
5/5 stars, RDB
RDB,
Luxury 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 9A)
Went from a XT5 to a Xt4 because it is a little smaller. The interior, however is very spacious. I selected the luxury model with the safety package and it is plenty well equipped for me at an attractive price. The only thing missing is blind spot indicator, and I can't believe that a luxury brand like Cadillac wouldn't put turn signals in the mirrors on all vehicles.

2022 Cadillac XT4 videos
[MUSIC PLAYING] WILL KAUFMAN: There was a time when entry-level luxury meant a small sedan, like a BMW 3 series. With the SUV craze, these days, entry-level luxury means a small crossover, and that's where the new 2019 Cadillac XT4 comes in. Cadillac has big plans, with an onslaught of new products slated for the next few years. That makes the XT4 doubly important. Not only is it competing in a really hot segment, it has to introduce new buyers to the brand and make them excited about trading up to a higher end Cadillac when the time comes. So is the 2019 XT4 a promising entry into the Cadillac brand? We're here on the outskirts of Seattle to find out. The driving dynamics of the XT4 are kind of interesting. They're not what I was expecting. But I think I can see what Cadillac was going for here. Let me try and describe what I'm talking about. Power for the XT4 comes from a 237-horsepower turbo-charged, four-cylinder engine. There are a lot of technical changes to it that are designed to just get more mileage and make sure that it can still deliver all the power it needs. Power delivery from the engine is very smooth, and it's pretty strong for a vehicle in this class, but there's no real sense of urgency to the way that it puts the power down. It doesn't feel like a sporty SUV the way some of the German competitors do. This vehicle also has a nine-speed automatic and an optional twin clutch all-wheel drive system that's similar to what you see in other GM products like this. There's a clutch that can completely disconnect the rear wheels, so you get more efficiency when you're in two-wheel drive mode. And then it can send power to the rear wheels when it's needed and shift power between the rear wheels, which is good for traction if you're in a low traction environment. The variable steering in the XT4 is pretty light. It's precise. You can definitely put this car where you want it to be, but you can't really tell what's going on with the front wheels through the steering wheel. The ride feels a little stiff-legged and a little bouncy, especially over larger bumps. The other thing is the brakes. These are electrically-activated hydraulic brakes, so the feel through the pedal is really artificial. It's a very firm pedal, and it's very linear, so it's pretty easy to judge braking force. But you feel a little disconnected from what's actually happening with the car. All of these things together-- the sort of light steering, the firm brake pedal, the little bit bouncy suspension-- all of it comes together to make this feel a bit more like a large SUV, dynamically. Now, that's not to say that it completely drives like a large SUV. There's definitely more maneuverability, there's less body roll, there's more grip, but it still has that feeling like this is a little bit more like an SUV than just a lifted car. Sets it apart a little bit from some of the competitors that do a lot of work to make their vehicles feel very car-like on the road. I mentioned before that the small luxury crossover segment is very hot, and that's true. There are a lot of brand new vehicles that this has to compete against. There's the Volvo XC40, and the BMW X1 and X2. There's also the all-new Lexus UX and the brand new Audi Q3. The Cadillac XT4 starts at about $36,000. And for a sport or premium luxury trim and front-wheel drive, you're looking at about $41,000 with destination and handling added in. All-wheel drive is another $2,500. A fully-loaded XT4 is going to break $55,000. That really puts the Cadillac XT4 right in the thick of things in terms of pricing in this segment. EPA estimated fuel economy is 24 miles per gallon city and 30 highway. For a car that makes 237 horsepower, that's not terrible, but it's not amazing either. That's definitely not going to make this a class leader in terms of efficiency. [MUSIC PLAYING] On the outside, the XT4 has a pretty distinctly Cadillac look to it where, on the inside, they've clearly put in some effort to give it that entry-level luxury feel. All of these surfaces are covered with nice looking materials. There's a lot of soft touch inside of the cabin. There are definitely a few places where you can feel the entry-level part of entry-level luxury. There's this plastic around the window switches that General Motors just can't seem to get away from. These are very comfortable seats. I've been in these all day. I'm really happy with them. There's a good amount of adjustability. There's heating and ventilation in this premium luxury trim and even sort of a basic massage function. There are a lot of deep pockets and cubbies around. There's even this convenient little wireless charging pad that you can slip your phone into. And since this is a General Motors product, you get things like OnStar, you get 4G LTE connectivity with a wifi hot spot, you get Android Auto and Apple Car Play. There are also USB and USBC ports for both the front and back seat. Of course, there's a full suite of active safety features and driver aids, lane keeping, collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control. Now, one thing is, just in terms of that wow factor of interior technology, some of the other vehicles are going to look a little more impressive. One thing they've done here that's sort of interesting is they've installed a control knob for the infotainment system. Now, I have mixed feelings about this. I like knob interfaces. I think it's a less distracting way to interact with the infotainment system, but this system is not really optimized for this interface. And what the knob does also changes depending on what screen you're in. I do appreciate that there are buttons for just about everything in here. The HVAC system can be controlled entirely through buttons up here. Heating seating and cooling, a lot of the safety features all have buttons attached to them, which makes life a little easier. There are a ton of different camera views. You can get a good look at the curbs. You can see what's happening both in front and behind the car and get a good 360 view from multiple angles. And that's good because visibility in the XT4 is not amazing. They are pretty thick pillars all around. So for low speed maneuvering, I really appreciated having the cameras. This backseat is one of the things that Cadillac is counting on to set the XT4 apart from its competitors. There's more leg room here than you get in a lot of vehicles in this class and a decent amount of head room. I'm just starting to rub on the roof, so taller passengers might run out of headroom but for the most part, full grown adults are going to be able to use this back seat. On this trip, I will say I've enjoyed my time in here. This is a comfortable place to enjoy a picturesque drive through the Pacific Northwest. I think for people who like the Cadillac brand already, for people who really enjoy larger SUVs but are looking to scale down a bit, they're going to find stuff in here that appeals to them. Our final verdict on the XT4 is going to have to wait, though, until we have a chance to get it to our test track along with all its competitors and do full ratings and reviews. NOTE: This video is about the 2019 Cadillac XT4, but since the 2022 Cadillac XT4 is part of the same generation, our earlier analysis still applies.
The 2019 Cadillac XT4 is a new entry in the hottest segment right now: entry-level luxury SUVs. A lot of brand-new or fully redesigned competitors are crowding the market, but Cadillac is betting that a little extra interior space and a lot of technology features will help the XT4 stand out. Edmunds staff writer Will Kaufman traveled to the outskirts of Seattle to jump behind the wheel of the XT4 and get the measure of this not-so-small small crossover. Find out what we think of the 2019 Cadillac XT4 in our Edmunds First Drive.

Cadillac XT4 vs. BMW X1
The X1 is BMW's smallest SUV and one of our favorite small luxury crossover SUVs. The interior feels premium and spacious for the price, and a strong turbocharged engine and athletic handling make it fun to drive. We do wish it had a little more refinement since the ride can be somewhat stiff. Wind and road noise levels on the highway are a bit high for a luxury vehicle too.
Cadillac XT4 vs. Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class
The GLA has been fully redesigned for 2021 and fixes many of the flaws that plagued its predecessor. The interior is well appointed and feels much more worthy of the Mercedes badge. It's smooth and comfortable on the road, though wind noise is slightly excessive for this class of SUV. The GLA is smaller than the XT4, so if you need more space than what the GLA offers, it might be worth checking out the related-but-slightly-larger GLB.
Cadillac XT4 vs. Audi Q3
The Audi Q3 was recently redesigned with new styling, new tech and more features. The spacious Q3 is quiet and comfortable on the highway, and the interior quality is at or near the top of the class. Standard all-wheel drive is a plus for those who need it. In testing, we found the fuel economy to be somewhat disappointing, and, despite the space, the cabin lacks storage areas.
