Overview

It's been quite a while since we've gotten an all-new fully electric BMW — that would be the i3 hatchback, introduced in 2014 — but the wait was definitely worth it. The 2022 BMW iX is the automaker's first electric SUV and, simply put, it's stunning.

For its introductory year, the iX comes in only one flavor, which BMW calls the xDrive50. Two electric motors — one at each axle — combine to produce a thumping 516 horsepower, enough to propel the iX from zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, BMW says. It won't pin you to the seat like a Tesla Model X Plaid or Model Y Performance, but from our experience behind the wheel, we have no doubt that acceleration will far exceed the expectations of most drivers. The iX also instills confidence and encourages spirited drivers to attack the curves as though they were in a smaller, sportier vehicle.
The iX has about the same interior space as the current X5, and the model's flat floor (there's no center hump) allows for spacious rear seating. The cabin has some delightfully weird interior materials. The available blue-and-black upholstery color scheme, for example, treats the interior to textile and faux suede materials arranged in unusual, clashing patterns.
To say the iX is BMW's most tech-heavy vehicle to date is an understatement. Highlights include an augmented reality overlay for the navigation system, an electrochromatic sunroof that switches from transparent to opaque at the press of a button, and a remote vehicle parking system that can remember how to enter and exit particularly tricky parking spots. The iX is also the first BMW to receive the iDrive 8 infotainment system, which features a new user interface, personalized user profiles with greater customization, and more robust voice controls.
Overall, we're impressed with the iX. It offers a more refined and luxurious driving experience than the Tesla Model X and sportier performance than the Audi e-tron. It's also as good as or better than any gasoline-powered midsize SUV, including BMW's own praiseworthy X5. Check our test team's Expert Rating below to learn about the iX's performance, Edmunds-tested range, utility and more.
Edmunds Expert Rating

Driven, tested, rated by automotive expert Jonathan Elfalan
Great
8.4
out of 10
We drove the 2022 BMW iX on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
8.5/10
How does the iX drive? Electric SUVs are redefining how large vehicles are supposed to handle, and the iX is a prime example. The weight of batteries mounted low under the floor really helps provide a hunkered-down feeling. As a result, the iX rails through corners with ease, and the light-effort steering creates the illusion of the iX being smaller and lighter than it is.
Our test vehicle came with the optional 22-inch wheels and tires. They provide decent levels of cornering grip and, in our emergency braking test, helped slow the iX down from 60 mph to a dead stop in an impressive 114 feet. In typical driving, the iX can provide plenty of regenerative braking, and that makes it easy to drive around using just the accelerator pedal and letting the regen handle the braking.
Brakes are important because the iX can boogie. Accelerating to 60 mph took only 4.2 seconds in our testing. That's quicker than most EVs (including the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron) and not too far off from BMW's gas-powered X5 M.

Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the iX? The iX has some of the coolest-looking upholstered seats on the market today, and thankfully they're also very comfortable to sit in. The front seats offer a generous range of adjustments and have effective seat heaters. The iX rides quite nicely on the road, too. There's still a hint of sporty firmness rather than total cloud-like softness, but we suspect our test car's larger 22-inch wheels may have played a part here. It's also a very quiet SUV, and wind and road noise is minimal on the highway.
Much of the iX's interior controls are touchscreen-based, and that includes the climate system. Most functions require two button presses, but the primary temp settings are easy to access and make adjustments to. Rear passengers get two climate zones as well, plus a range of vents for excellent coverage. The system overall does a great job of maintaining a comfortable environment.

Interior
8.5/10
How’s the interior? This interior — wow! Not only is the iX interior gorgeous to look at, it's highly functional too. For starters, it's easy to get into. With the large door openings and low stepovers, it's hard to imagine access getting any easier than this. Well, it can, if it's equipped with the optional air suspension, which allows for an even lower load height. Passenger space is very generous once inside, with a flat floor throughout the cabin, ample headroom and legroom in both rows, and great shoulder room. Visibility is excellent, especially out of the front windows, and for anything you can't easily see naturally, the available cameras handle with ease.
For all the thoughtful decisions BMW made with space, there are a few things that still confound. Functions that are at your fingertips in other vehicles, like adjusting the amount of regenerative braking or the adaptive cruise control gap to the car in front, are buried in layers of menus. We also discovered that the white-lettering touch controls on the beautiful walnut center panel wash out in sunlight, which makes it hard to see where the actual buttons are.

Technology
9/10
How’s the tech? The iX showcases some of the latest BMW innovations, and they're pretty impressive. BMW's suite of advanced driver aids can be hit-or-miss in how they perform, but they're a hit here. With the exception of the inconvenient adaptive cruise distance adjustment, we were really impressed with how all the systems functioned. BMW's voice-activated virtual assistant is also a cut above most voice control systems in how it responds and its ability to change things like the climate control settings. It's more useful than gimmicky (unlike BMW's gesture control).
BMW pushes the envelope even more with its Android smartphone integration. Android users can quick-pair their phones to the car, and navigation directions show up as turn-by-turn directions in the driver's gauge cluster. This is a new level of integration we've never seen before. Apple CarPlay, although wireless, does not share that level of integration yet. Our test car also had the optional Bowers & Wilkins audio system. We found it pretty impressive, and it had a few party tricks up its sleeve like "4D bass," which essentially vibrates your seat in concert with the music for a more immersive experience (though it can be disabled). Why just listen to podcasts when you can feel them?

Storage
8.5/10
How’s the storage? The great functionality of the iX extends to its cargo accommodations. There's 35.5 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, which is much more than the Jaguar I-Pace (23.2 cubic feet) and Audi e-tron (28.5 cubic feet), but not quite as much as the Tesla Model X. The rear seats can split and fold flat in three sections and have convenient release buttons at the rear hatch. But there is not a front trunk like on the Model X.
Interior storage for small items isn't quite as plentiful, but there are some good options for your personal effects. The door pockets and center armrest bin will be your best options. The iX accommodates child safety seats with ease. Copious rear seat space makes it easy to fit any size seat, facing any direction, with easy access to Isofix anchors and top tethers on the back of each rear seat spot.
Although the iX is rated to tow a fair amount in some other markets, it doesn't receive that rating for the U.S. market.

Range and Efficiency
9/10
How are the range and efficiency? The iX xDrive50 has an EPA-estimated range of 315 miles when equipped with the optional 22-inch wheels like our test car had or 324 miles with the standard 20-inch wheels. Impressively, we easily exceeded the EPA's estimate on our standardized real-world EV range test route. Here, the iX drove 377 miles on a single charge, which is one of the longest distances we've gotten so far from an EV.
Efficiency, or how much electricity the iX uses when driving, is also impressive. We measured 32 kWh used for every 100 miles of driving. That's one of the best results we've seen in the class and similar to what we've observed from less powerful EVs such as Ford's Mustang Mach-E.
The iX comes with an 11-kW onboard charger and which BMW estimates can charge from zero to full in a little over 10 hours on a Level 2 home charger (assuming you've got the right hardware and under optimal conditions). It also has DC fast-charging capability up to 195 kW, which can recharge the battery from 10% to 80% capacity in about 40 minutes.

Value
8/10
Is the iX a good value? The iX is not what we'd consider affordable when taking a quick glance at its price tag. But if you start lining it up against its segment competition, the iX begins to look like more of a bargain. Build quality feels incredibly solid. Everything in the interior looks great, carries a bit of heft and is tightly screwed together. This is easily one of the better modern luxury interiors we've seen to date.
BMW's warranty is comparable with coverage of most luxury brands. Basic coverage lasts for four years/50,000 miles, with generous rust-through coverage of 12 years/unlimited miles and a battery warranty of eight years/100,000 miles. BMW provides complimentary maintenance for three years/36,000 miles, which is a plus, and two years of free fast charging (30-minute sessions at a time) on Electrify America's charging network.

Wildcard
8/10
If we're being honest, we're not thrilled with the front-end design of the iX. It does look unique, but it may be a bit too bold for most palettes. The styling alone may be a non-starter for some people.
If you're able to get past the exterior, the interior is where it's at. Clean, modern and functional, it's a place we'd love to spend time. Behind the wheel the iX can be fun to drive, but more so we find it easy to drive. Speed is readily available, and the lightness of controls and responsiveness to inputs just make the iX easy to maneuver and place. Did we mention it has a hexagonal steering wheel? Endless conversation starters here.

2022 BMW iX trim level differences
The iX is BMW's first fully electric SUV. For its introductory 2022 model year, the iX is available in a single trim level called the iX xDrive50. It has all-wheel drive courtesy of two electric motors — one at each axle — that produce a total of 516 horsepower and 564 lb-ft of torque.
Which iX trim does Edmunds recommend?
The iX lineup is relatively simple this year, as there's only the xDrive50 trim level. (The 610-horsepower iX M60 debuts in 2023.) However, there are some standouts on the options list that we consider must-haves. The Premium package is expensive in a nutshell, but it's a drop in the bucket compared to the standard cost of the iX. Make sure to also spec the Driving Assistance Professional package, which includes the advanced driving aids expected of a vehicle in this price range.

2022 BMW iX xDrive50 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)
I picked up mine a couple weeks ago. Came from Tesla Y. Before that was a Mercedes GL450. Going to the Tesla was my test to see if I’d like electric. And I did- the Tesla was a good car. But I missed the refinement - the comfort - the precision of craftsmanship. And now that I have the iX, I have the best of both worlds. This is the best car, hands down, that I’ve ever owned. The … suspension is so perfect. The headlights (laser lights) are absolutely spectacular. Auto high beam reacts as fast as any human can to other cars. I don’t worry about it like I did with the Tesla- the Tesla was always just a little slow to adjust. When high beams come on, it’s theatrical. The middle of the road illuminates, and like opening a curtain on a stage, the high beam spreads wide (over about 1/2 second) across the road and to the trees and fields beside you. When you turn the wheel, a light fades in to the direction of your turn and fades out when the wheel returns straight. The B&W audio is absolutely spectacular. It’s the first car audio system I’ve not made a single adjustment to- no tone control, no EQ. Perfectly flat is superb. Oh, it’s stupidly quiet. Everything about this car is perfectly choreographed, measured, and intentional. I absolutely love it.

2022 BMW iX xDrive50 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)
I have had this car since 6-22 and its amazing- the best care I have every driven. An EV with the space, refinement, function and luxury of a BMW SUV. My only gripes- no adaptive cruise and as soon as winter hit (In Raleigh NC). the battery range/ miles dropped significantly. I went from 365 (at 95%) for long range trips in the summer to 265 miles per charge in November. I hope they … can fix this because everything else is perfect. It does feel like having your cake and eating it too.
Amazing vehicle

2022 BMW iX xDrive50 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)
Great built quality (everything feels solid), unreal tech inside, interior design is impressive (minimalistic but nowhere near as minimalistic as Tesla’s interiors). Power is insane, instant torque and awesome range.
Absolutely stunning
