Great Car Maybe beacuase it's a GLX
I have had this car from the day it came off the boat and have had a great time with it. Minor problems have occurred both nothing more than I have had with other cars. I have read all the complaint of engine and electonic issues but have not experienced any myself. Maybe it the 4 cylinders that have the problems? I would definitely buy another.
Get what you pay for
I've experienced the common problems with the Passat (control arms, window regulators, coil packs) that shouldn't be present in a car/company with as much manufacturing history as VW. Having said that, I think you get what you pay for. Mind you, I bought mine used for $13K and I will certainly get my money out of it. Best decision I made was to purchase an extended bumper-to-bumper warranty to 100K miles that has already paid for itself.
High Price Performance for Its Class
I bought my Passat right before Consumer Reports rated it a "best buy" in the Spring of 1998. I had planned to buy an Audi A4 V6 but learned that the Passat had the same drivetrain for ~$3,000 less. I haven't been disappointed. Despite six years and 72,000 miles, I still love it. It's been very reliable and gets about 27.5 MPG on premium fuel. Overall, the car is very well built with high quality components. To this day, the car runs smooth and quiet.
Hunk of Junk!
I love the room and comfort, but that's all I love. Every single part on my VW Passat has broke at some point, esp. the doors and windows which have broke a couple of times each. They aren't lying when they say that German parts are really pricey! When driving it's really hard to see behind you because the back end is so high up and the panels next to the window make a BIG blind spot! To top it off, it sucks up so much gas that I sometimes only get 10 miles a gallon and it only takes premium!
Gorgeous Fun, But High Cost of Ownership
I remember, my husband had me come to Edmunds.com to compare the features of the VW Passat GLX with the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry in 1998 and I was blown away. Seat memory for two drivers, heated seats in this class of vehicle, a cooled glove box? Wow. Just in case, I bought an extended warranty because I only dealt in the other brands I mentioned previously (turns out that was a good thing until that expired). On the day that the two-year VW warranty expired, my water pump died and I started to become wary. I had never had a car strand me before (it was only a few feet from my house, but still...). Several warranty and recall repairs later, I'm quite done, thank you.
