I bought this to pull my 19' Robalo fishing boat here and there, which it does SURPRISINGLY well. Took it 585 miles to Lake Powell, no problem) Worked a little hard on the grades, but maintained 60mph most of the time, AND managed about 12mpg. I added an air lift airbag suspension system which is a MUST. It was 100 degrees, and the temp. guage never budged! That 5.0 V8 is pretty outstanding. BUT....man, this thing rides HARSH.... even after new, softer shocks, it beats ya up a bit. But hey, it's a truck. The check engine light comes on frequently, indicating a faulty gas cap. One of the o2 sensors needed replacing at about 55,000 miles.

We’ve had our Limited since early 1997. Within the first few years there were annoying repairs to the heater blower system, but it’s done fairly well since. The cooling system temp. sensor(s) failed, but not the system itself, so we get by, and there is a fix on the Explorer Forum we have yet to do. There is a rattle, theoretically from a broken air ride system mount, that only occurs in dry, warm weather, but the air ride system works as intended. Paint has degraded on the black rear “posts”, but it’s not a big deal and could be repainted. I’ve replaced the rear deck and hood supports, but that wasn’t difficult. It’s still our go-to vehicle for just about any journey, and tows easily behind our motorhome, which is more than can be said about recent model Explorers. With 100k miles on it, it just keeps going, and doesn’t let us down, even in backcountry forays.
