A great sedan when few wanted sedans.

2019 Chevrolet Impala
Unfortunate that after more than three decades of producing junky cars, GM finally got it right with the Impala, only for the sedan market to tank in favor of SUV boxes on wheels. For the price, it's hard to find a better sedan with an excellent balance between comfort and performance. For a family of four, 12-hour road trips are not a problem in any V6-powered Impala of this last … generation (2014-2020). The seats are supportive on long trips and the cabin is quiet. 28-29 miles per gallon is easily manageable on interstate highways with a full load and cruise at 75 miles per hour. The only annoyance is the adaptive cruise control which functions so well that it's imperceptible when the Impala slows down to maintain distance with the vehicle in front of you and then you realize you're only moving 55 in a 70, and there's only adjustment for the following distance, not a disable for that feature. The controls are all easy to use, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the 2016+. We cross-shopped the Avalons at the time, but they didn't have CarPlay then.
At this point, if you're considering an Impala on the used market, look for a Premier trim with at least the Convenience Package, which provides for memory driver's seat, heated and ventilated front seats (without the Convenience Package, they're only heated), 110v rear seat outlet, and electric tilt and telescoping steering wheel. The ones with the Premier Confidence Package come with forward collision alert, adaptive cruise control, and 20" wheels. The particular size 20" tires make tire replacement an expensive proposition, and the original Bridgestones that came on these drone loudly enough to drive replacement prematurely, even if the wear is otherwise decent. Many 2017+ Impalas with the Premier Convenience and Confidence Packages also have the panoramic moon roof, which is also a nice feature.
