DETROIT — The 2015 Cadillac ATS coupe, the long-awaited companion model to the ATS sedan, will be introduced in January at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, Edmunds has learned.

The ATS Coupe is expected to go on sale next summer.

The ATS Coupe is expected to be offered with the same four- and six-cylinder engines available in the sedan. A high-performance V series coupe may beef up the lineup as well.

Currently, the 2014 ATS sedan engine lineup includes a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, with an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or 3.6-liter V6 engine. The 272-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo engine is offered with a six-speed manual transmission, a relatively unusual choice in the segment. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard.

The ATS is Cadillac's BMW 3 Series fighter. The ATS is also aimed at the Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The addition of the coupe doubles the ATS model line. Currently, only one ATS model is sold, a four-door sedan that went on sale in fall 2012. By contrast, the German luxury brands, which Cadillac is desperately trying to emulate, offer compact coupes, convertibles and sport utilities.

Styling of the ATS coupe will be a contrast to the larger CTS coupe, which has a long, flowing fast-back roof line. Judging from spy photographs, the ATS's roof line will be more conservative.

The ATS coupe eventually may be the only two-door model offered by Cadillac. While the CTS four-door sedan was redesigned for the 2014 model year, the CTS coupe and station wagon were carried over from the 2013 model year with little or no change. Both are expected to be phased out. However, Cadillac has not announced when the CTS coupe and wagon will be dropped.

Edmunds says: The Cadillac ATS Coupe takes another step toward reality as it gets shined up for a Motor City debut.
