NEW YORK — The production version of the 2014 Acura MDX, which is expected to shed the luxury SUV's hard edges, will debut next week at the 2013 New York Auto Show, said American Honda on Monday.

The 2014 Acura MDX will feature a longer wheelbase to improve ride quality and third-row seat access. Honda said that the 2014 MDX rides on a "completely new platform" and will offer "enhanced ride comfort, a more versatile cabin, and increased fuel efficiency, while also improving dynamic performance."

The 2013 MDX is equipped with a 300-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2014 Acura MDX will get a direct-injected 3.5-liter V6 engine and will be offered in SH-AWD and two-wheel-drive variants, Honda said. The 2014 Acura MDX is expected to get better fuel economy, said Honda. The 2013 Acura MDX 4WD returns 16 mpg in city driving and 21 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

The 2014 MDX will get the next generation of the AcuraLink Connectivity System and Jewel Eye LED headlights. It will be offered with a range of high-tech systems, including Multi-Angle Rearview Camera and optional Lane Keeping Assist System, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow and Blind Spot Information.

The redesigned MDX was previewed in the form of the 2014 Acura MDX Prototype, which debuted in January at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. The current MDX is in its seventh model year.

The base 2013 Acura MDX starts at $44,175, including an $895 destination charge.

The 2014 Acura MDX targets the BMW X5, Buick Enclave and Volvo XC90.

Edmunds says: Expect the 2014 Acura MDX to have a softer, rounder look — but an aggressive slate of high-tech features.
