Trim level differences
The 2026 BMW i5 is an all-electric variant of the 5 Series and is currently available in two trim levels: eDrive40 and xDrive40. The eDrive40 uses a single 335-horsepower electric motor that powers the rear wheels. The all-wheel-drive xDrive40 adds a second electric motor for the front wheels and has a combined output of 389 horsepower. There's also a sporty M60 with dual electric motors that produce 593 horsepower, and it's due later in the model year. Every model is driven by a battery pack with a usable capacity of 84.3 kWh and a charging system that can accept 205 kW. BMW says that the i5 can add 90-100 miles of range in 10 minutes when plugged into a DC fast-charging station capable of delivering at least 205 kW.
Which i5 trim does Edmunds recommend?
Though the M60's abundant power might be tempting, the eDrive40 or xDrive40 should be quick enough for most drivers. Which one is right for you will depend on whether you need the added sure-footedness of all-wheel drive. Of the many available options, it's worth starting with the Premium and Luxury Seating packages. Among other upgrades, the former adds adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera system, while the latter includes ventilated front seats and heated rears. Neither is particularly expensive, and they equip the i5 with features that really should be present in a luxury car at this price point.
