I know what you're going to say, "Hey, what about the 2003 540i?" I'm actually not a fan of that garish (IMHO) nose treatment that BMW put on the 2003 540i 6-Speed models, so they're not under consideration. WRONG!!! LOLOL You ALMOST knew what I was about to say.... actually my comment was going to be that I bet the rather overdone nose of the '03 would be an issue... I ... Read More

With the launch (2005) and subsequent failure (2007) of our new business, my financial situation isn't what it was a few years ago. That said, I'm anticipating "rounding the bend" so to speak from a financial perspective in the next year or so, and will be hopefully able to get back into a BMW, albeit a slightly used one. With the above in mind, I occasionally browse through the used car ... Read More

I have an auto - 6.9 is the number in the BMW brochure I have from 2003. You had a manual - don't you remember? :P All numbers I quoted were for auto trannys.

Be prepared to really like the 535xi. Other than the sound of that terrific BMW straight 6, it will "feel" like you are driving a V8. The 528 is still going to provide much enjoyment... like Shipo, my 2003 530SP leaves little to be desired. It took the new TT engine to make me consider replacing my current 5! Still have not done so, as I truly enjoy my car... and ... Read More

BMW NA has a penchant for adding the M Sport trim to the Sport packages of their older platforms. This was the case with the 1999 E36 328is Sport Package coupes, the last E39 540i Sports, and the E46 330i ZHP. Late last year my dealer took a gorgeous 2003 Topaz Blue 540i Sport in trade. I would have bought it but unfortunately it was a slushbox... :(

All of the Audis my wife and I have had since that first 1978 Audi 5000 in 1977 have been purchased from the same dealer. Most of them, by far, from the same salesman (who is not in management at the dealership.) The dealership, owned by ONE GUY, was sold to a billion dollar company several years ago. The dealership built a new 7 million dollar dealership. They sell about 600 ... Read More

You are correcto-mundo! The A6 has Servotronic, the slower you go the greater the boost. Servotronic II by ZF apparently (since I have not driven a car with this) changes both the force required based on road speed and the reaction to steering wheel motions (also releated to road speed.) Audi, BMW, Cadillac, LandRover, Volvo all use Servotronic, some applications (in some models) use Servotronic II. I think I would like ... Read More

My situation almost exactly when I plunked down a deposit to order an M35X. Lower lease payments, MORE technology (don't know about "better," though) and "close enough" to German feel for jazz (at $200 per month less, hell yes!) Then Audi, for an almost $3K more expensive model came in UNDER the Infiniti price on the lease -- and "all I had to do" was threaten to buy the Infiniti, which ... Read More

Is there a difference?
Written by: markcincinnati on Jan 6, 2007 6:15:07 AM
I read the line "single mode 'old lady' Servotronic steering kills the entire otherwise great car" with keen interest. You see, in 2005, after months of test driving cars from Europe, Japan and the US, we came to find that both BMW and Audi had some vehicles we could really enjoy. The BMW sub-venting machine was offering a $47K vehicle for $581 per month for 36 months 45K miles with no ... Read More

Are you looking for maximum or optimum? Are you looking at #1 as a "deal breaker" and #2 as less of a deal breaker? What does the ranking of "performance on slippery roads" have to do with the [broader] "safety" trait? I would assume if #1 was safety that your current #4 would have been your #2, that is. Again, "general performance," [I would argue] is a significant contributing factor to ... Read More

Well I've had 2 A6 2.7T's. A 2000 and a 2003 with very minimal repair issues. I had 5 series BMW's for 14 years and a Q45 until the Audi's. The twin turbo's give you 0-60 in 6.6 and good passing power. They also develop max. torque from 1800rpm to 3800rpm. The quattro makes the car feel very firmly planted and I drive it hard. It is fabulous in rain or ... Read More

I work with people who have Acura's, BMW's and several other brands. I would say that BMW's are breathtakingly expensive to repair out of warranty. Some friends have a Lexus -- it is "largely" bullet proof. However, the owner tells me little wear and tear items are also breathtakingly expensive and keep going out. The phrase "overall the Lexus is very reliable, but it tends to nickel and dime you" leaps ... Read More

I had a 2003 allroad 2.7T w/6sd manual. The engine, dare I say it?, like all Audi engines was flawless in every way. We also had over the past few years three Audi TT's also turbos. The 225HP version, our last 2, were wonderful and also (from an engine standpoint) were flawless. I have been to several Audi gtg's in Europe with American Audi owners and many of them had A4's ... VW and Audi

"VW had the cars, but they went on a buying spree, decided they wanted a piece of the S class, and left them on the market for a decade." Lexusguy, I agree. Former CEO Ferdinand Piech steered Volkswagen off course in the 1990s by trying to take the VW brand upmarket to challenge Mercedes. Reliability as a general issue of discussion
Written by: domenickamarc on Oct 14, 2006 7:57:53 AM
A frustrating personal experience with a car or SUV, such as the BMW X5 mentioned a recent post, would definitely weigh heavily on my mind in going out to buy a replacement. Figuring out how that bad experience and/or CR's assessment of the X5 should, if at all, influence anyone else is a different issue. I don't believe that we have the kind of reliability statistics (from either CR or JDP) ... Read More

Selling England by the Pound -- Genesis. You win the cupie doll, Pat! Here in Cincinnati, the new generation of BMW's with that spanky new "35" twin turbo engine are rolling out -- at this point, the 335 sedan and coupes are RWD, but already the 328 is offered with AWD and next year the X drive option will be added for about $1900. It promises to be a brisk seller. ... Read More
