Comfortable and quiet on the road, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is adept at highway living. While decent in this form, we'd likely seek out some options to up its level of performance. But if you're looking for a more attractive upgrade from a 3 Series or any other entry-level luxury sedan, this BMW is worth a look.

- Less backseat headroom than the 3 Series sedan
- Heavier and costlier than similar sedan competitors

What's new
- Minor exterior trim changes
- Some driver assistance features now standard
- Part of the first 4 Series Gran Coupe generation introduced for 2014
Overview
A new BMW 3 Series launched last year, but the 2020 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is still based on the previous-generation 3 Series. The 4 Series is a collection of body styles based on but differentiated from the 3 Series sedan. And BMW has been slow to update the coupe, convertible and hatchback (Gran Coupe). The 4 Series Gran Coupe ultimately has less rear-seat room and a smaller cargo area than the current 3 Series, but it might be a better vehicle overall.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2020 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe 430i 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.45 per gallon for premium unleaded in Ohio.

Avg. Midsize Car
Despite its hatchback body style, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is somehow less utilitarian than the 3 Series sedan. Blame the swept roofline that gives the Gran Coupe its signature good looks. It reduces rear headroom, to the point that even average-size adults have to duck to get in and will feel cramped once seated. The roof also cuts into the cargo area, severely reducing its effectiveness.
However, it's the most practical version of the 4 Series, and the only four-door option if you want a new BMW that feels like the last-generation 3 Series. We think the old 3 Series is more comfortable to drive than the current one. And when you opt for the more aggressive suspension with the sport-themed packages, the ride won't beat you up as the sport suspension does on the new car. That means the 4 Series Gran Coupe is rewarding when you drive fast, yet it isn't punishing at low speeds.
You sacrifice some usability and pay a little more if you decide to go with the 4 Series Gran Coupe, but we think it's a more pleasing car overall than a new 3 Series. Just make sure to get a set of summer performance tires, as the standard all-seasons offer less grip than you might expect.

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
7.5/10
How does the 4 Series Gran Coupe drive? The 430i Gran Coupe's driving dynamics are hard to criticize but also difficult to love. The turbocharged four-cylinder has decent thrust, but this is a heavy sedan. A 0-60 mph time of 6.3 seconds is acceptable but not quick. There's also a noticeable delay between when you press the pedal and real power kicks in. Handling is disappointing given BMW's storied past, but low grip was ultimately a failure of the all-season tires rather than the chassis.
The Gran Coupe is otherwise impressive. The brakes are great in both everyday and spirited driving. The steering wheel has a nice, hefty weight to it, and effort can be changed using the different drive modes. Transmission shifts are smooth, and the auto stop-start system remembers your preference even after you turn off the engine.

Comfort
7.5/10
How comfortable is the 4 Series Gran Coupe? A quiet and soft ride on the highway is the defining characteristic of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, at least in the default Comfort setting. Sport and Sport+ are decidedly firmer and feel out of character for a grand tourer. As expected of a luxury car in this price range, there were no panel squeaks or rattling to speak of. Engine, wind and tire noise is managed well.
Our tester's sport seats, while well-bolstered, can feel narrow for drivers with wide hips or shoulders. The seat bottom is extendable, but even in the shortest setting it might feel too long for shorter drivers. The climate system is also a little strange. There is no way to sync the dual zones, and the automatic setting button barely alters the fan speed.

Interior
7.0/10
How’s the interior? The Gran Coupe's interior is comfortable, with easy access to the front seats and an excellent driving position. The driver's seat is highly adjustable, and it takes no time at all to dial in a perfect position. Most controls are also within easy reach. While the iDrive infotainment interface does have an initial learning curve, it's likable once you learn how it operates.
Issues arise once you start moving rearward. Compared to the standard 3 Series sedan, the 4 Series Gran Coupe has a swept roofline that arguably makes it look better, but it severely limits rear headroom. Even shorter passengers will feel the pinch. Getting in is a challenge, too, and rear visibility is poor. The thick pillars create large blind spots.

Technology
8.0/10
How’s the tech? As is typically the case, BMW's proprietary technology is a strong point. The central screen is bright and attractive, displaying navigation images that are easy to understand. The screen, however, is on the small side. The iDrive system has nearly flawless voice recognition software as well, and we appreciate that a Wi-Fi hotspot is standard.
The only real issue is with the 4 Series' device integration. Apple CarPlay is offered on a subscription basis, and BMW's pricing strategy feels a little nickel-and-dimey. It's also a wireless system, which sounds neat in theory, but we had intermittent connection issues that soured the experience. Android Auto is not offered.

Storage
6.0/10
How’s the storage? As a hatchback, the Gran Coupe should be significantly more utilitarian than the mechanically similar 3 Series sedan. But the swept roofline cuts into the cargo room, resulting in a cargo area only marginally larger than that of the 3 Series. Direct competitors also offer more space.
Cabin storage for small items is abysmal. The center console is tiny, and the door pockets and cupholders are slim and shallow. Accommodation for car seats is merely average.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10
How’s the fuel economy? EPA-estimated fuel economy for the test car we had, the 430i xDrive, is 27 mpg combined. On our highway-heavy evaluation route, we were able to achieve 29.1 mpg. These numbers are right on par for the segment.
Value
7.0/10
Is the 4 Series Gran Coupe a good value? As we've come to expect from BMW, build quality is very good in the 430i. It has soft-touch surfaces on most areas of frequent contact, and our tester was devoid of squeaks or rattles. The panel gaps are small and even, and the paint quality is top-notch.
But since the Gran Coupe is a bit of a style statement, its price seems artificially inflated, especially when you compare it to an equally competent 3 Series. Basic and powertrain warranties are typical for the class, but the scheduled maintenance program (three services at three years/36,000 miles) is more generous than most.

Wildcard
6.5/10
Three specific options — the six-cylinder engine, the M Sport package and the Track Handling package — would make the 4 Series Gran Coupe more fun to drive. That would mean more power and more grip around the corners, plus some added style. As it is, the 430i Gran Coupe is stylish but not stunning.
Which 4 Series Gran Coupe does Edmunds recommend?
If you're considering the Gran Coupe over the standard 3 Series, passenger accommodations likely take a back seat to performance. While the 430i is sufficiently powerful for most folks, the 440i is more entertaining to drive and likely fits your needs a little better. The M Sport package is a must if you want to give the 4 Series the dynamic feel worthy of the BMW roundel. Plus, it's the easiest way to get the summer performance tires, which we recommend if you live in a part of the country untouched by snow.
2020 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe models
Despite the name, the 2020 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is a four-door hatchback with a sedan profile. Two trim levels are available, 430i and 440i, with what's underneath the hood the main distinction. The 430i's turbocharged four-cylinder (248 horsepower, 258 lb-ft of torque) offers a compelling blend of performance and fuel economy.
The 440i has a more powerful and nearly as efficient turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six (320 hp, 330 lb-ft). Both models are available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (called xDrive in BMW-speak). An eight-speed automatic is the only transmission available.
Standard features for the 430i include LED headlights, a sunroof, a power liftgate, keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats, and simulated leather upholstery. You also get lane departure warning, a blind-spot monitor, and a forward collision warning system with automatic low-speed emergency braking.
An 8.8-inch central display screen with navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot and a nine-speaker sound system handle the infotainment duties. You'll have to pay extra for an Apple CarPlay subscription, but the first year is included.
You'll primarily upgrade to the 440i for the six-cylinder engine. But you also get power lumbar adjustment for the front seats, hands-free liftgate operation, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.
Many optional packages are common to both trim levels. These include the Convenience and Executive packages. First, though, you'll have to decide if you want your Gran Coupe in the Luxury or Sport Line treatment, both of which dress up the exterior with different trim details. Note that the Sport Line includes sport seats, which can be switched for the Luxury's less aggressively bolstered thrones at no cost.
You can also increase the Gran Coupe's sporting capability with the M Sport package that adds summer performance tires, a sport suspension (or an adaptive suspension for an added fee), more aggressive-looking front and rear styling, and the contents of the Convenience package. The Track Handling package includes non-run-flat performance tires, upgraded brakes, an adaptive suspension and variable-ratio sport steering.

2016 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe 435i xDrive 4dr Sedan AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo 8A)
I wanted a car to replace my Audi S7, and this was just the ticket. Test drove Mustang 5.0, Lexus GS-f , Lexus IS-f, Mercedes C-400, and Audi 4 and S4. BMW 435 xi Grand Coupe with M package won on several points. Versatility of hatchback, styling, included no cost maintenance, ride/performance balance, and value. Audi maintenance is very expensive, Mustang 5.0 is unrefined, and Lexus … handling is like a marsh mellow, The BMW is very quick and I have been averaging 28mpg on the highway at speeds of 75-80mph. The one major weakness in the vehicle is the horrible run-flat tires, with no option for a spare in the trunk. I will be changing to Michelin Pilot super sports soon, however puncture sealant kit must be purchased to compensate for lack of a spare." I" drive takes time to get used to, but once mastered works well. Hands free phone calls are very clear and crisp.

4-Series X-Drive Gran Coupe has it all

2016 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe 428i xDrive SULEV 4dr Sedan AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
Purchased the car 14 mos. ago. I have owned 10 BMW's over the last 25 yrs. This car is classic BMW. It's a driver's car and performs flawlessly in that regard. BMW has figured out how to maintain performance while increasing gas mileage. I actually observe 34-35 mpg hwy while traveling at speeds in excess of 70mph. City driving gives me 23-25 mpg. The car has utility as well. Both rear … seats recline to form a mini SUV if you will. It's great! Now for my only criticism: At 6ft 200 lbs, I'm not a slight individual. The driver's door opening is restricted in order to attain the coupe-ish look, making it difficult for ingress and egress. I brush my head 90% of the time getting in and out. Once inside.... no problems.

Had a 750i - Don't Miss It.

2017 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe 430i xDrive SULEV 4dr Sedan AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
I have a 2017 BMW 430i xdrive Gran Coupe. Purchased it new. My previous car was a 2006 750i, which I leased when new. The 750i was a fabulous road car, for sure. I regularly drove from Washington, DC, where I live, to Manhattan, NY. I would make a 4 hour drive in a little over 3 hours. The car was a no drama luxury cruiser. I needed a full size car because I had a family, which … included a son built like a nose tackle, and a young adult daughter. Alas, my son died at 27 (of diabetes), and my daughter moved away after finishing her education. It was then only my wife and I. We did not need a full size car (and my wife owns a 2019 BMW X3 - another great car). So I went looking for a new car in late December, 2017. I saw the BMW 430i xdrive Gran Coupe. Love at first sight. That freakin' car is sexy. And it drives beautifully. I never would have thought that a 4 cylinder engine could adequately propel a 3600 pound adequately But is does. The sweet spot for driving is between 75 - 90 miles per hour. The car drives lithely, very gracefully. Just a blast to drive. Makes even an older guy like me feel youthful. I love that car. And since I rack up miles fast, I will probably buy another one when the new body style is introduced in a couple of years.

BMW's "Goldilocks" Car

2018 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe 430i 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
It was time to replace my 80,000+ mile 2014 Mercedes E250 BlueTec. I wasn't impressed by the generic styling of the MB's exterior so thought I'd give the BMW 5 Series a try. Nice car but it didn't offer exactly what I was looking for, namely, high mileage with visual appeal. Then I saw a car that I never knew was available until I was at the dealership -- the 403i Gran Coupe with … Luxury Package. It checked all of the boxes for me, great highway mileage (34 EPA Highway; but I've averaged about 10- to 15% higher at a steady 75+ MPH in Comfort mode), safety, comfort (I'm 6'5" & 215#), high quality entertainment system with large screen navigation and storage space. Rear Seat comfort? Ok for short jaunts -- my only sacrifice vs the 530i. Storage space? Incredible! This thing is a hatchback with about half of what my SUV holds (MB GLE350). The front seats are extremely comfortable, the steering is very direct and the iDrive 6 is amazing, especially with Apple Play. Performance? More than sufficient for my needs. I cannot rate reliability with only 1,500 miles on the odometer, however, J.D. Powers rates the GranCoupe higher than the 3 and 5 Series as "Better Than Most". Best of all it was $5k less than the comparable 5 Series. Yup, out came the checkbook. If you're searching for a stylish, comfortable, well equipped vehicle, you should give the 4 Series Gran Coupe serious consideration.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2020 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, so we've included reviews for other years of the 4 Series Gran Coupe since its last redesign.
