Disappointing

Two months in of which one month in the shop for repairs. A faulty "module" that's responsible for switching between electric and fuel. Basically the car arrived with a faulty module, was not tested by the dealer, leased to me and promptly returned by me. It took two more modules to finally get a good one. So far that is. Because after owning 12 Volvos during my life so far, this should have been the crown jewel. Instead I hear myself saying; don't get this one. Me? I was born in a Volvo. Yet, here we go. The car is definitely unreliable. It sputters. And when it works it really does. Should a nearly $80K car give you that feeling?

Very disappointing from Volvo

In the positive column, I would say that I love the spaciousness and the comfort of the ride. The handling for a big car is very good and the acceleration is far better than expected. However, none of this matters if the car spends more time in the shop than with you at the wheel. A few months into ownership, the all electric miles per full charge decreased. Less than a year in the fuel cells had to be replaced twice. Now, the too soon for market hybrid engine bit the dust. The vehicle has been in the shop with the latest event for over a month! This is my second (and last) Volvo. As much as I wanted to like it and to overlook the functionality of the touch screen in favor of the smooth ride, there is no way to get around having a car that breaks down all the time. Two thumbs down on this Volvo hybrid!

I have always been a faithful Toyota girl. Loved both my sequoias but hated the gas mileage. This is my first luxury car and I really want to love it, however I’ve had it just under a year as I literally drive to the shop to pick it up for the 4th time. The ride is nice, fuel efficiency is great but my sequoias never went to the shop for anything other than standard maintenance. At less than 1000 miles in reverse I had a shuddering jolt that happened multiple times. First time in shop no one could find anything wrong. Happened again multiple times so I dropped it off, drive an hour home to get a call that I need to come pick it up and Volvo was acknowledging a problem and had tech journal out with no solution yet. Continued driving and happened so finally I called and demanded they keep it until it was fixed. Said they needed an O ring rebuild kit for the rear differential. After a few days in the shop they say it’s done and just needed an update. Worked great for a bit. About 2 months later my airbag light goes off while driving. After a few key cycles it went off and they said everything was fine. Now flash forward 3 more months I put in drive let my foot off the brake and a terrible shutter and lunge, this time forward instead of back. My power steering light comes on and says pull over safely, check engine and park assist all go off. I have towed to Volvo and when it gets there they’re like what’s wrong there’s nothing going on? They call the next day and say it needed a major upgrade. I really want to love this car I mean I spent 70k dollars on it. I bought the extended warranty because I work in the automotive industry and know how expensive it is to work in Volvo’s. I also will keep a car for a while but I’m worried now what happens when this car is out of warranty. I’ve never needed to update my Toyota’s.

Quality throughout. I really love the quiet ride that is also stiffer than what others typically want. My 2022 XC90 Recharge has 21" wheels and will use 19" wheels with snow tires for the New England winter. I have upgrades providing heated seats from and back and a heated steering wheel. The upgraded Harmon Kardon stereo is wonderful. It looks fantastic in Denim Blue. The blond leather seats are insanely comfortable. Driving around on PURE electric power is enjoyable. I have only had it for a few days, but I am getting about 33 mpg in city/highway combination driving. I have spent quite a bit of time, hours, getting to know all of the features and capabilities and I am not 100% confident that I have the right transportation for me. I even implemented wireless CARPLAY and updated the internal navigation with the latest maps using Volvo's MacBook application and a USB stick. I find that some of the reviews for this car are off a bit as I enjoy aspects that in many cases are listed as CONS. Anyway, I am a very happy owner at this point of a truly luxurious 7 passenger SUV powered by an amazing 400HP powerplant and a perfect 8-speed transmission. My build has the Climate and Advanced packages a very useful integrated booster seat. I also have the 21" 5-spoke wheels and the Harmon Kardon sound and the Protection Package Premier. I added the towing package that has a electrically powered hitch that pivots making it invisible when not in use. You have to see it to believe it. The dealer did the installation and did a perfect job at Volvo of Keene in New Hampshire. UPDATE -- It has been a few months now. XC90 has 12,600 miles after driving it across country and back and using it for almost all of our driving around home. Overall, I get about 28mpg. Not bad for a 5000 lb SUV. Volvo will keep increasing the range of the EV capability so the next time, things will be quite a bit better. The newer version called extended range, the one out now, can go 30 miles in PURE mode and that would be better for me, but that's life. Everything else is as perfect as when I bought it. No problems at all. Oil change was done at 10k by the dealer at no cost. I totally enjoy driving it especially in the snow. All tech works and it has met all the expectations that I had for it. I would get much higher overall mpg if I did not take lots of long trips, but that has nothing to do with the vehicle. Update: At 20k the SUV has no issues or problems. Will go to dealer next week for 20k service. In summary, I look forward to my next Volvo. This one performs exactly as advertised. Update at 2 years old with 32000 miles - No issues, runs same as new. Update at 3 years old with 45,000 miles. The hybrid heater failed and needed to be replaced under warranty. The special battery that powers Volvo On-Call failed and was replaced under warranty. Both were completed without issue. No other problems and I continue to service the vehicle at the dealership at the 10k interval. Hopefully the units that failed won't fail again. Update at 50000 miles. All is well. No problems.

All in all amazing ride, however I still haven’t been able to adjust to the lumbar settings, none of them appear to work for me, and I so wish that Volvo provided power operated middle row seats to make getting in and out of the 3rd row a breeze.
