My familiy and I have owned our 2011 VW Touareg TDI Lux for 5 months now and all I can say is what an incredible car. First off, we were OK with the 19 MPG city rating, and because we live in the hills, we were expecting less. BUT, we are actually averaging 23 miles per gallon without any highway driving. I would not be surprised if somone who's commute consists of 35-65 mph flat roads could average over 50 mpg. This really is an incredible machine. The overall build quality is very solid, you always feel safe! The interior has ablselutely no flaws and the panoramic sunroof is incredible. If you ane in anyway remotely considering the Touareg, you will not be let down. We love our Touareg TDI

Was in the market for another SUV, yet wanted something different, not cumbersome nor boxy. Previously had an 07 BMW X5 - liked the car, yet did not like performance. With gas prices fluctuating high/low, I considered the diesel. Drove the BMW diesel, yet it was $9k more than the VW. My car is new <300 miles, yet in town I avg 19.5 and Hwy 26 mpg. As the car engine breaks in and I get my foot off the pedal, I know mileage will improve. Seats are very comfortable, interior is well designed and Navigation interface works very well. The LED headlights are distinctive and the back end of the Touareg is in my opinion...nicer than Porsche

'11 Touareg TDI hits almost all targets

We took delivery of our new '11 TDI Lux on 12/9/10, and my wife and son want to drive it more than their own cars ('08 GTI and '02 525i wagon). It's quiet, comfortable, beautiful inside and out (what a sunroof!), has a great nav system and electronics package, great power (can't wait 'til summer to tow our boat), and is getting 25+ mpg! It passed its snow test with flying colors, and the handling is fantastic. The only negatives are price ($55K) and lack of cargo space, but we knew what we were getting into there. Five adults and all their stuff plus some food gets pretty tight, but if you don't mind a car-top carrier it would be a great answer. Check it out if looking for a new small SUV!

My last 3 trucks were two Land Rover Discoveries and then the LR3. I was ready to trade in after five years and surveyed the landscape of real trucks - LR4, Sport, Armada, Infinit - you name it. I drove the Touareg and decided to go for it. It has good truck sensibilities, but drives like the Cayenne. It is comfortable and more economic than the 11 mph LR4.

I have owned many cars, trucks and SUV's over my lifetime, including luxury brands from Audi and Acura, this is the best vehicle yet. The build quality, handling, engine performance/mileage are all great, best in class. I have owned this for two months and I am averaging 22mpg in city driving, with excellent acceleration and engine smoothness. The technology features are intuitutive for most, but there is still a learning curve. DVD player in glove compartment a plus.

I've had my 2011 Touareg TDI for 1 year. Overall, great experience. I'm an Audi loyalist, yet my VW TDI is a favorite. My Touareg has blemishes. I'm 6+mo. into trying to get my Bluetooth fixed. A VW factory engineer confirmed mine isn't usable. Call recipients can't hear me. On any iPhone (3, 3G, 4, 4S) it is not usable because it picks up excessive road noise (VW didn't QA test iPhones?). VW USA and my dealer have been lackluster in support. I was told by VW's Executive Care team that I will have to pursue other means like BBB and CA Attorney General to fix this because VW USA doesn't have a trend of this as a problem. Apparently, I'm the first. So great experience with a major blemish

I have owned my Sport TDI SUV since new. I have driven it for 28,000 miles and have not had one problem with it. Truly an outstanding SUV. Build quality is top notch. Feels very solid and safe. Steering is tight, suspension is firm yet soaks up road bumps. Handling on the most curvy roads is amazing. Diesel engine is very smooth, surprisingly quiet and very powerful. Accelerates like a rocket. 80mph feels like only driving 50, without any strain on engine, while getting 30mpg!! I set the speedo alarm at 80mph, and it routinely alerts me. A great feature on this SUV!! Seats are very comfortable, Nav. and voice commands easy to operate. Great sound system. VW hit a home run! Best SUV!!!

Traded in my 09 for the 2011,also picking up a AWD CC for my summer car, which I ended up not needing. My previous car had been a excellent off- roader, and presuming that the new one carried on with the off-road creds, bought the '11 model. I purchased it in summer not needing off-road capability ,and found the car flawless with a buttery smooth ride, gorgeous looks in and out, great fuel economy, and lots of space. As soon as winter began however, the car turned out to be a nightmare. It simply cannot leave the beaten trail, lacking any off road potential. I understand that few people go venture, but the ability to drive in mud bogs and cross rivers is mandatory in Northern Alska.

I have been driving for 50 years and have driven most makes and models from GM, Ford, MB, RR, Audi, BMW, Low budget to > $70k and this is the best vehicle I have ever driven! Solid, quiet and fuel efficient. The safety features are great, and the looks speak for themselves, 'understated elegance'.

Just owned my Touareg TDI for 24 hours now. Really wanted the hybrid but the whole Chicagoland area is only getting about 10 hybrids for the whole 2011 model year. Seems like an advertising scam to me. The TDI surprisingly has little torque until past 2K rpm's. My GX470 seemed to have much better torque at 1300 rpms even though it is rated at 76 less lb ft torque. Handle's really well, similar to my wife's G35x. Fit and finish is well executed. I seem to have no problem meeting or exceeding the gov't rated MPG's. Over all, I'm happy with the purchase but at these steep prices, I don't think VW is going to sell many of these!

I bought my Touareg post diesel gate fix. It had renewed warranty which gave me peace of mind, although it wasn't really needed. The only issue that I've had is an exhaust smell, I took it into the dealer and they gave me a whole turbo under warranty but later found it was a different part not covered. Don't let that scare you if you're buying one without the warranty as the turbo replacement was to fix a small leak found on the waste gate but it was functioning properly when replaced. There have been a few tech glitches but they have been few and far between and given it's 12 years old it seems like an age thing. I did have a 2021 Jetta rental and noted besides keyless start and a heated steering wheel the Touareg had it beat in quality and tech. As I'm coming to the end of my ownership with this car my main reason for selling it is there's not a whole lot of speed if you leave it stock. I've seen tunes and delete kits but my state has pretty strict emissions so it's more hassle than it's worth. I did manage to get it to the drag strip to see what it really was doing and I couldn't get it under an 18 seconds in the quarter and it seems like they were around 16 seconds before the DG modifications. Even though its not fast it still handles pretty well and the suspension has held up as I'm just now feeing it get a bit soft at nearly 140k miles. All the sports cars I've owner were riding on pillows at less than 80k. Gas milage is fantastic even without a tune as I drove from Carson City NV to San Diego CA in less than 2/3 of a tank. The last 1/3 lasted me for my 3 day stay and I only needed to fuel up once it was time to head home. The AWD system does great in snow and off road. I did switch to old Cayenne 17" rims to have a bit better tire for mud and snow as the 19s really only have "snow rated" commuter tires. It ended up saving about $200 per tire as well. This car went from something I knew nothing about to one of the best cars I've owned. I'm definitely bummed there are no newer generations of the Touareg TDI available in the US as I would have become a loyalist for sure.
