I have had my VW Touareg for almost 2 years now and has been truly a beautiful eye opener.

I own the 2004 V8 with the air suspension. This vehicle is a nightmare to work on and after 3 years and 40k miles I have made too many difficult repairs. By comparison my chevy pickup has only needed a set of brakes in that same timespan with similar miles. Here is a partial list: Repaired wiring in the drivers side foot-well replaced (3) batteries which go under the drivers seat dealt with power drains from the keyless entry security system replaced both fuel pumps - yes it has two replaced the starter - words can not express how big of a nightmare this was to do. The service manual suggests pulling the engine and transmission. replaced (1) air shock repaired headlights/housings - they were probably ok when new but are now a mess of complicated brittle plastic. Mine had camber / tire wear issues which i believe is a common problem. Mine uses oil ~ 1qt/ month or so Very expensive to re-key and difficult to get an autostart on as well if you live in a cold climate. Mine also has all sorts of loud beeps and warnings for the airbags, tire sensors, headlights, running gear faults, etc. but I just ignore them. Pros - the ride and handling is better than any SUV or truck I've owned. It's a pleasure to drive when it works and you can even almost forget that it's just waiting to blow the timing belt or have some mysterious electrical breakdown. It'll ruin your world if you have to have it serviced by a mechanic or dealership.

Recently bought a 2004 Touareg with just over 100k miles, and against my better judgement, did not do my due dilligence in having a used vehicle checked out. And oh boy am I paying the price for that. Hands down DO NOT PURCHASE WITHOUT CHECKING WITH CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN FIRST FIRST FIRSt. Now , to be totally fair, I do believe the one I had purchased most likely wasn't kept up according to manufacturer suggestions. Just don't think that you're going to be buying a reliable japanese car. I mean, it's big and solid, didn't show signs of any leaks, no out of the ordinary noises, that was only for one day. The very next day, all HELL broke loose. Car stopped on me 3 times within 10 miles, then the very next day, quit on me completely on side of the road with my kids aboard at night. So the saying BUYER BEWARE, applies to this model

After ten days of driving, this vehicle is amazing. Combines sports car cornering and acceleration, luxury car goodies, and off-road brute force.

The best and the worst

It's the best vehicle I have ever owned if all works well, but 23 days of service in the first six months of ownership annihilates the pleasure. A seemingly endless series of quality problems is met with mediocre service and VW's inability to timely get replacement parts.
