V6 Passats Eat Oil!

This car has consumed oil since I first bought it. VW says "it's normal" to add 1 qt. every 2,000 miles. I have never owned a car that went through oil like that. It does not smoke or leak oil. What kind of engineer would design a car to use oil like that? I had a Honda Prelude with 185,000 miles on it and it never used any oil between changes. I will never own another VW.

The Passat GLX is an excellent automobile and mine has given me great service. It is a pleasure to drive under all circumstances. Where I live, the roads are not the greatest, with cobblestone streets in my town. This has resulted in some wrattles in the car which I probably would not have otherwise. Economy is good enough, considering the engine and how I drive. Tiptronic is a great transmission system.

My wife really wanted this car, a luxury sports sedan. For the first 20K miles, all was well. Then it was old all of a sudden. The warranty ends @ 24K so bizzarre repairs I have never seen happen at these mileages are our responsibility. I note the other reviewers either love or hate these cars. I second what sounds like a weird theory - ours was built in October, and I think that may explain it. Another important note - the nice curvy sheet metal on these cars is paper thin, and it dents incredibly easily. A slow moving shopping cart can cause 2k worth of damage!

This car is not only the best car I have ever puchased.... it's probably the best purchase I've ever made. Quality through & through.... quick, very fun to drive, roomy on the inside, but looks like a jetta on the outside... I strongly recommend this car to anyone who has to drive.

The 2000 Passat is definitely the best VW ever built. I still love the car after 50,000 miles. Its reliability is above expectations, I only replaced the rear brake pads+rotors at 45k (500$). The car is ageing gracefully, I plan to keep it for at least another two years.

Bought this car new in 2000, never a problem until at 104,000 got a check engine light with emmissions workshop light, dealer said that the catalytic converter was bad to the tune of $3,300, took it elsewhere and they said the O2 sensors were also bad...another $1,200. I paid $24,600 for it 4yrs ago and now I cant even trade it in!

My 2000 Passat is the most enjoyable car I've ever owned. Great handling combined with true comfort. The Audi V6 coupled with the Tiptronic transmission is a true performer. The car loves the highway, but economy suffers considerably with town driving. I've had a couple of maintenance problems, but not anything serious. I bought my car in Mexico, where I live, and my only real complaint is that agencies in the U.S. can not service it. Nor can they service Passats from Canada. This is a real black eye for Volkswagen as I am hesitant to drive in the U.S., which I occasionally like to do.

While a fun car to drive - when something goes wrong - watch out. The repair bills are extremely high. Normal charges for ordinary upkeep are also higher than lets say a Toyota Camary. Check recalls - we have had two. Change your oil!!! We did not change it every 5,000 miles and they voided our warranty on a repair that cost us $1,100 with 60,000 miles on the car. So far with 103,000 miles on this car, that my wife calls "the baby" we have spent over $4,000 on repairs never mind the normal stuff. An expensive kid indeed, never mind the premium fuel required.

I love driving this car. It handles well and is the perfect size for me. But...I it's been pretty high maintenance. So far the fuel injectors have been replaced while still under warranty (whew!). The front brakes have been replaced and the most recent and most expensive repair was for the driver's seat heater which burned out.

The brake & gas peddles are too small and too close. Lots of problems with these cars. Poor choice of materials. The interior scratches real easy. Lots of mechanical parts made out of cheap plastic (power widow braces) that are expensive to replace. Watch out for tie rods, control arms, mass air flow sensors, timing belts, and engine sludge. All very common problems. Expect at least $1,000/year in repairs.

With 97,000 miles on this car I still get 35 mpg on the highway. The sound system is great. The only aspect that is weak is the AC which takes a while to get into high gear. This is a 4banger turbo and it will still hit 100 mph when passing. I used to drive a '79 Mercedes 450SEL, but this Passat has so much more going for it.

I decided to purchase the Passat after owning Toyotas and Hondas because it was a sexier car then the 2000 Camry. However, the reliability has been worse then I expected. The cup holders quickly broke, the driver side door latch mechanism totally fell apart, requiring $300 plus in repairs. The VW dealer mechanics continually screw up working on the car. The seat fabric is the most amazing lint brush you ever saw, tightly holding on to every bit of lint and dirt, and some of the interior door handle and dash pieces are covered with thin rubber that has been peeling off and looks terrible. I won't buy another VW.

I have owned my 2000 Volkswagen Passat since it was new and in general enjoy its speed and agility. The Monsoon system is unparalled for a factory system. I've now got 82,000 miles on it and its the biggest pile of garbage in existence. While the engine runs well, it mysteriously uses one quart of oil every 800 miles. VW thinks this is acceptable! It has front suspension problems with the tie-rods and bearings wearing, and needs a water pump replacement. All in all, this has been a rapidly declining ownership experience

If you are not familiar with cars then don't bother buying one. This is car more than any Honda or Toyota appliance. Yes, I had my share of issues (vacuum hoses, MAF, fuel pump) but they are all things that can be replaced by the owner. Or find a good independent shop, you just expecting the worse when you go to the dealer. The car feels solid, drives beautiful, and has good power for a 4-cyl. Plus I average 28 MPG in mixed driving.

First off, emissions workshop showed up during our warranty, but Volkswagen jerked us around, and we have paid at least $2,500 in three separate attempts to unsuccessfully repair the emissions issues. Now it also has ABS brake problems and both of the front windows don't work. The cup holders are jammed/broken, the rubber handles are peeling, both front turn signal lights broke off, the side-mirror control broke off. I swear integral parts to this car are made of brittle plastic. You are forced to pay a premium for synthetic oil and premium gasoline. I thought VWs were great cars but I was thinking of the VWs in the 80s. It does drive pretty well, but I am worried about making inspection AGAIN.

I leased this Passat (having leased before)and was confident that I was choicing a top rated vehicle. Within the short two year warranty, the car was in the shop for various issues: rear cup holder broke, rpm needle jumps while stopped at lights, loud noise from wheel well when making tight turns. So of course once the warranty ended, more problems arose: check engine light came on for "no apparent reason," rpm needle jumps worse than before, foul smell if the heater is on, defroster doesn't work. I babied this car with the best gas, regular service, and garaged it. I'm extremely disappointed and am counting the days to give the car back to VW.

Purchased the car 1 year used. For the first year I owned it, the car was a dream. Good acceleration, great handling, comfortable ride. In the second year (after the warranty expired), the wagon averaged 1 shop visit a month! Some things were minor recalls/repairs. Others were major malfunctions in my opinion. Decarboning valves, seatbelt issues, oil leaks around the cam seals, etc... This was the top of the line model, only 3 years old with 50k miles! So unreliable, I had to trade it in. Give serious thought to purchasing....try leasing if anything!

I love driving this car, and I pay dearly for it. This car is in the shop every other month. The enginge consumes and leaks oil. My engine and emissions lights have been on for three years. Don't waste your money, the dealers charge to turn them off, and they will be back on in weeks. Don't replace your O2 sensors either. Thay are too expensive and the computer will default the sensor anyway. I have had wheel bearings, radiator, tie rods, cv joints, vacume lines, and the list goes on. Over $7500 in 6 years not including brakes timing belt and tune ups. VW you have lost my business. This car is a money pit.

I loved this car when I bought it. But, when the repairs started, they never stopped. It spends most of the time these days in the shop. The repairs over the past year include $900 turbo, $500 timing belt, $650 coolant feed line (dealer), $600 struts and many other $200+ repairs. I can't even sell it because of other repairs that need to be made to it. It's a piece of junk. I wish it wasn't because I really liked this car. I will never buy another VW. Never.

I'm a car guy and I've owned some great ones (and a few not so great ones). I had high expectations of this car, since it was by far the most I'd ever had to pay for one, and it has exceeded my expectations. Excellent ride, handling, comfort. We've drive a family of 5 loaded to the hilt 550 miles and got out feeling like we had flown. I can't believe some of the bad reviews here - build quality doesn't vary that much in VWs - they must work at Mazda dealers! Own an Audi for thousands less. This car is absolute best in class!

My wie and I have had this car for 3 years with no problems and a lot of fun. It is a great long distance traveller, very comfortable, plus it's very quick when you need it (merging in NJ ridiculous traffic, fighting your way through NYC). Car does not handle cold morning (anything below 0 degrees F) startups well -- you have to coax it a bit in the deep winter. It handles like a dream -- I can tell you, as a former Ferrari owner, well, no, it's not a Ferrari, but the 6 cyl GLS version is very agile for a sedan.

We bought this vehicle brand new. From 3 months on we have had repeated problems with the electrical and mechanical systems. It has been in the shop so many times for the same problems, and the dealerships are very uncooperative. Although I love the way this car drives and looks, and the comfort is undeniable, I am very disappointed. Had I really researched it and spoke with people I knew who have owned VW's I would never have gotten myself into this costly mess.

I have owned this car for less than 3 years and have had many many problems with it such as mechanical failure, to defects, not being able to get the tires off the car to do a tire rotation. The car is very comftable but has slowly fallen apart at the seems. In the past 3 months I have replaced the undercarriage protector, 2 new headlights, replaced the light bulbs in the dashboard 2 times, replaced all four brakes, replaced lug nuts that had to be chiseled off to get the tire removed, an alignement of the subframe and back window motor fixed. none of this is under warranty. VW doesnt consider this a lemon. Also this car takes premium gas only.

My car is almost fours years old and I have had many problems with it. These problems can not be classified as normal wear and tear. For anyone interested in buying the car, I would stay away from any that were built in September and October. Remember, these cars are built in Germany and Octoberfest is around that time of year. I am definitely paying the price for the car having been put together by a bunch of drunk Germans!

I've only had it for a year but now its developing a few issues. It seems that if these great VW ideas actually worked....it would be worthwhile The collapsing side mirrors failed to work, the door handles have always been a problem (even since the 95 passat!), the coil pack has again been a longstanding issue with problems, and the worst issue so far is an intermittent starting problem. I am forced to sell the car simply because its too costly to own. If this were an M3 then I could somewhat reationalize the cost of repairs

Not even a hiccup of a problem after $65k. The fuel economy has been terrific, averageing 30 MPG during my daily commute. The performance is solid and the fit and finish is industry leading, as expected in VW/Audi products. Cup holders are insufficient, but usable. New passengers in the car alway comment on the interior lights. Love the turbo, next to no lag. Say no to Accords and Camry's and make a statement.

I have only 81,000 miles so far and gone through both external and internal CV boots. The worse part about maintaining this vehicle is the recommended replacement of the timing belt at 90,000 miles which will cost over $1000.00. If I had know this before I purchased it I would be driving another car. Better engineering is sorely needed if just for this one part. Be careful when you need new brakes being sure you get the ones designed for VW hat has the wear sensor. Otherwise the "Replace pads" light will come on.

I love my car. Have no doubts about this car, this is an Audi A4 with VW badging. All repair parts are completely interchangeable with an A4 of the same year. Passats are built in Germany so you know they are built correctly, not like the Jetta's which are built in Mexico. You cannot go wrong with this car. Note for the consumer though, look for the 2.8L V6. The VW turbo's have been known to need replacement after 100k km.

I have never had a car as unreliable as this care. I runs well on the high way but in the day to day usage and maintenance it is a mess!!! Very often you have problems with the doors, the automatic lock system is ridiculous. When you lock most of the time all the doors don't lock, out of 5 some times 2 or 3 doors lock. The same goes for the class on the doors, raising the glass up or down is another problem, the automatic system gets stuck or broken every now and then. More to that the arms at the front wheels are too fragile, I have had to change my arms every three months about because of the noises when taking a turn 'kak kak kak' it's very irritating. I have driven Toyota cars and I could go for over 2 years without changing the arms. I have 2 colleagues with the same car and it's the same story even with a friend who has a more recent version of the car, in fact my situation is better, one of my colleagues has packed his for close to 2 years now. I could keep going on and on and on and on....... bottom line, I'll never drive a VW ever again, I'm very disappointed

I bought my manual trans V6 Passat almost 10 years ago and have to say it's been a great car overall. There have been few unexpected repairs but the repairs I have had to make have been expensive. The car has a peppy V6 engine that gets great gas mileage (low 30's on the highway). My wife describes my Passat as "smooth in every aspect". I've been happy with the quality of the engine and body. The interior controls have a quality feel but many of the buttons, knobs and cupholders have failed or begun to become unreliable. Overall the positives of the vehicle far out way it's issues and I hope to drive my Passat for many more miles!

Probably the worst car ever!! Will never ever buy a VW again. It had low miles but already had transmission, engine problems. oil and power steering fluid were leaking. car had smoke coming out of the engine. wobbled while driving on the highway and drank gas as if i was driving a 14 cylinder car. i must have read almost every review about this car and saw that almost every car has a least 89-100 thousand miles on it.i should have never bought this junk. Please buyers think twice before purchasing this car

This is a one-owner car with a manual transmission and regular and prompt servicing for its lifetime. A wonderful car. Great handling, power (and it's a 4-cylinder) engine. Driven regularly in the Rocky Mountains.
