This car sux
I purchased the car used and for the first week was very happy. During the second week of ownership the check engine light came on and the emissions workshop indicator. After repeated visits to the dealer, the problem was unidentifiable. They replaced the MAF sensor and did other work. Fortunately the car was under warranty. However, a week later the check engine light went on again. After driving the car for a couple hundred miles the light went off again. Ever since then the light comes on and goes off whenever it wants. The car is not worth it. At the first opportunity I plan on dumping the car after 6 months.
No Complaints Here
I've had my Passat for over 8 years, have nearly 100,000 miles on it, and have almost nothing but good things to say about it. No ball joint replacement (apparently a common problem), no clutch problems, no major problems of any kind really. Minor problems have included emissions and radiator leak. Nothing else but standard maintenance (oil, tires, brakes). My only complaint is the difficulty in getting to the oil filter to change the oil. It requires that the front facia be unbolted, and several screws have broken off in doing this. Otherwise, I'm very happy with my car, and will consider VW again in the future.

What's not to love?
Purchased new in 2000, this car continues to please. Biggest regret was not getting the leather seats; with two young children, cleaning the upholstery has been a chore. A small rattle has developed in the RF passenger door, but otherwise the car is as solid as the day we brought it home.
New fan of Volkswagen
I purchased my Passat from a lady a few months ago. It is a very nice car. It looks good on the outside and has a killer sound system. All my friends love it, and I can't get enough of my heated seats and sunroof. Before I knew this car, I didn't like VWs, since the Beetle had always annoyed me. Now I am a new VW fan and love my car! The only thing I need to get used to is the low gas mileage (my old car got about 38 mpg). This car is fun to drive and the 4WD makes me feel safe. I tested it on a curve with and without it on, and boy does it make a difference! This car is pretty fast too, especially compared to the Toyota Corolla that I used to own.
It figures
I bought this car brand new in 00 The reviews were consistant. This car is a winner. At 26k the cd changer failed ($500). At 39k I need a complete brake overhaul ($700). At 79k the emission light came on and the dealer reset it. At 87k the light came on again and the dealer told me because of cheap gas my converters went bad. I Use premium, get 24 mpg. Like I going to spend 3K on new cats. Federal law mandates that cat s be warranted for 80k (HUM). At 91k the water pump went. At 92k Right side valve cover leaking. 97k same problem at 102k the right side head gasket blew. Last week at 102k the oil leaked on the cats, the car went up in flames!
VW Passatt GLS 2000
Since I purchased my 2000 VW Passat I have had absolutely no problems. The car has been excellent and has not required any major or minor mechanical repairs. I have driven the car twice to Florida (w/out stopping) and got excellent gas mileage (at 30+mpg!). Reliable, safe, economical and good looking!
Good car so far
Just turn 4 years and 60,000 miles on the car. Still love the time I spend in it. It is just a kick to drive.
THIS CAR SUCKS
1. 8 SEPERATE TRIPS TO THE DEALER FOR THE IGNITION COILS. 1 EA. FOR DIAGNOSTIC 1 EA FOR THE WORK TO BE DONE. 2. 2 TRIPS BOTH FOR VACUUM LINE PROBLEMS. 3. 3 TRIPS TO THE DEALER FOR A SECONDARY AIR PUMP PROBLEM 4. 2 TRIPS FOR AN EMISSIONS SENSOR THAT WAS PROBABLY RUINED BY THE NEXT PROBLEM. 5. NEEDED NEW ALL NEW PLUGS BECAUSE THEY WERE FOULED. YES, I USE THE CORRECT OCTANE, THANKS FOR ASKING. 6. ABOUT THREE WEEKS AFTER THE AIR PUMP WENT BAD, I HAD TO TAKE IT BACK AND HAVE THE COMBINATION VALVE REPLACED. 7. AND MY FAV THE UPSTREAM O2 SENSOR. I'VE HAD 3, YOU?
All around great car
I have owned this car for nearly three years and have been very happy with it thus far. I have never had a problem with the car and it drives like the way it did when I drove it off the lot. The interior is really comfortable, the engine is quiet and smooth, yet powerful, and it is a great car for children with car seats. The styling is still attractive and it is fun to drive. This is the only car that I have owned that I would buy again. Kudos to VW on making a great car at a competitive price.
Pleasure to Drive
This platform of the Passat is based on the Audi A4 and utilizes the same Audi 1.8L T engine and 4-link suspension. The engine has great low end torque and top end speed. Matched to the 5-speed manual provides a great touring car. The fit-and-finish are typical German high-quality. Bought used w/ less than 16K miles in 2001 and have had zero problems (now at 34K miles). Great MPG for a high performance car (Note to Big 3: It can be done!). Comfortable front leather seats and interior. Monsoon Sound system is also a plus.
Passat GLX 2000
The Passat GLX is an excellent automobile and mine has given me great service. It is a pleasure to drive under all circumstances. Where I live, the roads are not the greatest, with cobblestone streets in my town. This has resulted in some wrattles in the car which I probably would not have otherwise. Economy is good enough, considering the engine and how I drive. Tiptronic is a great transmission system.
Lots of Car for the Money
The first month i had this car I kept wondering why traffic was going so slow. When they pulled over and i went past, I'd look down and see I was going 100mph. This car is faster and handles as well as my BMW325. Spacious, comfortable, reliable and fast. A tremendous deal for 21K. Has 72K on it now and is still perfect.
DRIVING IS FUN
FUN TO DRIVE, GREAT VALUE FOR PRICE. CUP HOLDERS ABSOLUTELY POORLY THOUGHT OUT. CAN'T PLUG IN CELL PHONE AND USE CUP HOLDER AT SAME TIME.
VW Certification is a Scam
The Passat is fun to drive, powerful, and it looks good, but I have had so many problems with the car. I bought it as a certified used vehicle but still I am having a lot of problems in the first two months that I have owned the car. The certified program of VW is a scam. Don't believe it. Get it checked by another mechanic. Make sure you know all the 112 points of (so called) inspection when you go to buy this car and ask for every one of them. It is your right. And it will make sure the dealer you are talking to actually did the work to certify the car. Mine did not.
Overpriced and Overrated
VW customer service leaves alot to be desired. There is a reason the warrenty is for only 24,000 miles. New radiator at 42,000 miles, $600.00, ouch!! Selling, and buying another Infiniti I35. They wrote the book on qiality and service!! Auf Wiedersehen VW.
00 GLS review
We like our Passat, the only exceptions are maintenance costs inc. engine timing belt replacement is recomended at 65k at a cost of around $600.00 Yikes! Why should the owner have to pay such a big price for this shortlived engine item? If you don't get this done as maintenance it could cost you a fatal engine breakdown.
Almost perfect
This is the best car I have ever owned. It is an excellente automobile that may be unbeatable for the price.
Love my VW
Excellent car, I'm now a VW owner for life. Only problem was a bad mass airflow sensor, which is pretty common on these cars, good thing i got a warantee. the new sensor is almost $400! Would reccomend this car to anyone, the ride is as good as any audi ive been in, exceptionally smooth and quiet.
this car stinks
this car has had more repairs than any car i have ever had including upper balljoints ($600 apiece) engine parts and now it needs $1000 in repairs DO NOT BUY ONE!
Great Engineering, But Reliability?
With 34,000 behind me, I'm suffering through a love/hate relationship with my first VW. The car has had numerous repairs - emmisions gear; airbag sensor; overhead lighting console. The ceiling was dismantled to fix a rattling sunroof assembly. Numerous rattles. The latest killer was replacing the coolant pipe and pump - a 2 DAY SERVICE JOB! Unaccepatble on a $27k car. But when it's running smooth it's a gem. Notice I said WHEN.
Greatest car I've owned
I've owned my Passat for over two years, and have had no problems at all. It is fun to drive, handles well...only problem is paying attention to not drive too fast..
Wow
This car is not only the best car I have ever puchased.... it's probably the best purchase I've ever made. Quality through & through.... quick, very fun to drive, roomy on the inside, but looks like a jetta on the outside... I strongly recommend this car to anyone who has to drive.
Really nice
This is a great road car. I look for excuses to drive it on long trips. Seems like the faster you go the better the feel. A strong performer that doesn't need to downshift to climb some fairly steep hills. A car that goes this well really should stop well -- and this one does. The brakes have a really good feel to them. The ride is taunt and doesn't smooth all the bumps, but get real - this is a sports sedan. What you lose in smooth ride is more than compensated for by the handling.
great car
Great car with one reoccurring problem. Its been in for repair 4 times since I hit 20k all four times was for check engine with an emission workshop message. Repair cost average $175.00 for vacuum hose crack
passat
love this car, i will buy another one someday
Buy Something Else
Nothing but PROBLEMS and expensive maintenance. Serious problems: engine coils failed (recall), replaced a power window motor in 1st yr, computer problems at 20k, $800 brake caliper at 45k (dealer couldn't believe it - "very rare"), check engine light at 60k - dealer said we might have to replace the engine!. Fit and finish problems included loss of interior molding over curtain airbag and broken trunck latch, armrest and cup holders due to flimsy contruction. Simple light bulb replacement for A/C panel - dealer suggests not to fix due to cost of removing dashboard!
excellent car
Not one problem to date!
NEVER AGAIN!!!
I will never again owned a VW car, I had to replace all four tires before 25,000 miles and Breaks when I mostly drive on the car on the highway. Now i need to replace the Secondary air pump and the combi valves. This car is more of a headach than anything else. I am currently looking to get another car.
Style and Dependability
After 4 years, my Passat still has a lot of punch and is a lot of fun to drive. Never had any significant problems. The factory stereo is good, but not awesome. The cup holders are too small. But other than that, no complaints.
I love my Passat!
This car has been dependable, comforatble and a pleasure to drive. There is PLENTY of room for back seat passengers, and the amount of cargo space is amazing. I have had to make several long distance temporary moves for my job. I can fit all of my essential housewares/clothes/belongings in my sedan with no problem!
Best Car Ever
My 2000 Passat is the most enjoyable car I've ever owned. Great handling combined with true comfort. The Audi V6 coupled with the Tiptronic transmission is a true performer. The car loves the highway, but economy suffers considerably with town driving. I've had a couple of maintenance problems, but not anything serious. I bought my car in Mexico, where I live, and my only real complaint is that agencies in the U.S. can not service it. Nor can they service Passats from Canada. This is a real black eye for Volkswagen as I am hesitant to drive in the U.S., which I occasionally like to do.
Don't buy this car again
It was good to drive within the 2 year warranty. The trouble appeared immediately after the expiration of the warranty, firstly the engine check light without any warning, then is the secondary air pump started to make noise every time I start my cold. It became worse over the time. Recently the vaccum hose was broken and I have to tow the car to the dealership. Do not mention I have took vacation off. The trouble did not stop, now there is some more troubles related to annoying noise. Anyway, the car is in the garage every two months. The dealership are not very nice either.
Love the car but tooo many problems
I absolutely loved this car until the last 2 years after the warranty expired. had to replace way too many parts, like noc sensor, cluster, tie rods, entire cooling system. Otherwise the car is great to drive.
spend your hard-earned money elsewhere
I couldn't be more disappointed in a car. It's been in the shop out of commission for a total of eight days in a two year period. In my previous ten years as a Nissan/Toyota owner, I was without a car a total of ZERO days! I regret my decision daily and am trying to sell as we speak.
Love it
When I trade this car in, approx 2 yrs from now I will definitely buy a new VW Passat. This car is probably the best car I have owned. I traded in my 2002 Explorer for this car and do not regret it. Even though I loved my Explorer very much. I highly recommend this car to anyone. Incredible stereo system, very roomy back seat, large trunk. What else can I say excellent vehicle.
V6 Passats Eat Oil!
This car has consumed oil since I first bought it. VW says "it's normal" to add 1 qt. every 2,000 miles. I have never owned a car that went through oil like that. It does not smoke or leak oil. What kind of engineer would design a car to use oil like that? I had a Honda Prelude with 185,000 miles on it and it never used any oil between changes. I will never own another VW.
GLX AWD - What a ride
Overall the GLX has been a great car..I've used it on on long road trips to my short work commute...I enjoy driving it every time..great feel and definitely not a cheap feel..good solid German built auto..
should have bougth the infiniti
My wife really wanted this car, a luxury sports sedan. For the first 20K miles, all was well. Then it was old all of a sudden. The warranty ends @ 24K so bizzarre repairs I have never seen happen at these mileages are our responsibility. I note the other reviewers either love or hate these cars. I second what sounds like a weird theory - ours was built in October, and I think that may explain it. Another important note - the nice curvy sheet metal on these cars is paper thin, and it dents incredibly easily. A slow moving shopping cart can cause 2k worth of damage!
awesome car!!
awesome car fun to drive, very few problems but for 25,000 dollars well worth it
Best VW Ever
The 2000 Passat is definitely the best VW ever built. I still love the car after 50,000 miles. Its reliability is above expectations, I only replaced the rear brake pads+rotors at 45k (500$). The car is ageing gracefully, I plan to keep it for at least another two years.
Great Car
This car has been a wonder. My husband and I both drive it with complete satisfaction. The handling is excellant and the gas mileage fair.. much better long distance than city. Our friends are amazed with the room in the back seats. Our dog loves the fold down seat in the back for her riding pleasure. Absolutely no problems starting in cold, driving in snow or storms. We have had nothing to fix this past year. Only routine checkups.
catalytic converter
Bought this car new in 2000, never a problem until at 104,000 got a check engine light with emmissions workshop light, dealer said that the catalytic converter was bad to the tune of $3,300, took it elsewhere and they said the O2 sensors were also bad...another $1,200. I paid $24,600 for it 4yrs ago and now I cant even trade it in!
No Better Car For The Money!
I have had this car for 3.5 year & 45,000 miles and have not had a single issue. I love the way it drives, the interior is nicer than most luxury cars, and the power is just right.
Ben's Review
This car is a sensible family car that gets good gas mileage and is also fun to drive. Except for the turbo lag which can be annoying, pick-up is good and handling is excellent.
Fun to Drive/Dog to Own
I love to drive this car. Unfortunately, I cannot relax in this car due to the problems that I have experienced. When I picked up the car, the sunroof did not work. The brake light on the spoiler shorted out in less than 1 year. With premium gas, still had a bad fuel injector at 22,000 miles. Went for my first post-service warranty oil change to find out that I was short over 2 quarts of oil in less than 5,000 miles and required an engine flush. Mechanic thought car had 100,000 miles, not 30,000. I have taken excellent care of this car - I now check my oil at nearly every gas fill - and I get the feeling that the engine could go at any time.
The perfect car for me
I bought this in late 1999 and it was just right. I didn't mind the 91 octane as I got 35-36 mph all the time. Did a lot of long distance interstate driving and have over 130,000 miles on it now. Have always done dealer service and only one bad experience and never went back to that dealer on Provo Utah. Had to replace a control arm and tires as a result. But other than that, it is a dream. Wish I could still buy a 1.8 5 speed turbo in the future. Somewhere out there around 225,000 miles I suspect.
Used to love it
I bought my passat a year and a half ago and since have had to buy three sets of tires, a new airconditioner, a new power mirror motor, the computer says there is an emmision problem when none exists(making it impossible to pass the car in inspection), and now at only 70000 miles the head has cracked forcing oil into the radiator(without overheating). This doesn't seem normal on a car that has been regularly maintained and garage kept. A friend of mine has a 98 passat and has had over $6500 in repairs in the last year. I would expect much more from a car so close to the Audi A4. Don't buy a Passat unless you want to drive a rental every couple months.
Fine Car for Big Dogs.
This driver is over 6 feet tall and almost 300 lbs, and the Passat is the only smallish car I find comfortable. Interior dimensions are generous and headroom is still good with the power sunroof. Seats and seating position are perfect. Wierdest feature: Multi-function display on dash informs you in a teutonic way ("Refill washer fluid!!!"). Unexpected feature: Lock the car 3 times and the sunroof closes.
The Not so perfect Passat
Needed rear brakes at 30K miles. Needed vacuum hoses at 35K miles, and at 40K miles. Needed front O2 sensor at 40K miles. Needed heater core at 40K miles. Need I say more? Vehicle has 42K miles and looking to trade..............
Just Doesn't Get Any Better Than This
Wow...I just bought my '00 Passat GLS turbo sedan (moonroof, alloys) 2 weeks ago and I couldn't be any happier with it. The car got me 34mpg going from Ocean City, MD to central NJ! German engineering at its best!
