Awful engine design. It refused to be not broken. Overheats all the time. Plastic coolant flange will explode on you as will the plastic water pump which is on the timing belt! To replace it you have to lift up the engine and redo the timing. By 80 thousand miles it had been through 3 head gaskets and 3 water pumps!! The gadgets, ride quality, drivetrain/transmission are all great but the engine Is all poorly engineered plastic parts BUY A FORD FOCUS INSTEAD it's the same car but better in every way

I Love My Little Yellow Rocket!
I bought my 2000 Yellow Rocket brand new. I’ve had it 19 years and it has just under 100,000 miles. It has been extremely reliable nothing major. It’s a 5 speed stick shift Turbo that has amazing power. It goes up a steep, winding mountain road hugging curves and passing everyone! I love this car!

Little Things Get Expensive
The 2000 Beetle is faster than you might think. It is excellent in busy traffic. The Visibility out of the windows is also excellent. This is the car I prefer to drive in large cities. The downside is its little plastic parts break and fixing it is expensive. Both of the window motors have broken, the gas cap release cable broke, the gas cap release button broke, etc. If you want a car that is fun to look at and drive this is a great choice. However, be prepared to fix little stupid plastic parts.
FUN
I have had this car for 4 years and still love it. I had forgotten how fun driving can be.
I Hate My Car
I will never buy another Volkswagen again. I can't wait to get rid of my lemon. It is one problem after another. Not just with the car, but with my Volkswagen dealership. I'm tired of taking my car back to get the same things fixed over and over. Not to mention the time the mechanic at the dealership told me my car was fine and let me drive away with an overheating car. The problems never end. In my 1998 Beetle, it was the air conditioning, which broke three years in a row. There were many other things wrong with that year, but I decided to give VW another chance and got a 2000 model. Stupid me, this car is a mess. My independant mechanic told me he wanted to shoot my car, I feel the same :(
