Used 1999 Volkswagen Jetta Sedan Consumer Reviews
Looks/Handles Great - Highly Undreliable
Looks great from the outside, drives like you think a German sports car should, reliability about as good as a Yugo. I have had this into the dealer 10+ times - for O2 sensor (3X)/trunk lid switch/(1 week of purchase w/ O2 sensor #1), Front rotors (3X in 30K miles-75% Highway). All problems required a SECOND visit because 'the parts are not in stock' - brake rotors for a Jetta not in stock!? VW Corporate Customer service was all about excuses - "Sir, they have to ship the replacement parts all the way from Germany!" I can't wait to unload this before something really nasty happens ("Those water droplets you see on the oil filler cap are normal").
Lemon
From the first 100 miles when the fuel pump kicked out WHILE I was driving on the highway, to the clear coat popping off the front bumper within the first year, to a computer malfunction that shut down the car (and the consequent week it took for them to get the warrantied part back into it), this car was the worst I've ever had. Held tight and got a great trade-in and bought a new Elantra. About the only saving grace of this bitter lemon.
I will NEVER buy a VW again
From day one, this car has been nothing but trouble. I fell in love with the looks (exterior/interior), but failed to research warranty and reliability. Things that happened: Exterior paint has come off in some places, had to have emergency brake cable replaced, had to have spark plug re-wiring done, had to get starter replaced (engine died), and had to have muffler replaced all under 50,000 miles. Tires didn't last long, and neither did the brake pads. Repairs have cost me $2,500 plus and dealers were not helpful. Buyer Beware...I think I'll go back to Toyotas which never gave me trouble. The new Camry we have is GREAT!
Love My Jetta
This has been the best car I have ever owned! All I do is the basic maintenance on it. I've had this car for over three years and will have it for many more. I see that a lot of people are complaining about the new model. Maybe VW should not have changed a good thing!
Solid for the most part, but not awesome
I bought this car wanting a fun-to-drive compact sedan, and that's what I got. Unfortunately, there have been a few costly problems. At first, the car was in commendable condition, but some cosmetics like the glovebox, radio antenna and side molding on the doors have started to fall apart. The engine and transmission have been completely problem-free, but electronic issues with the power windows and a moody stereo system have a tendency to break. Overall though, the car has been extremely reliable, is peppy and good looking, and my next car will be another VW!
