My car is a darling. Until the check engine light comes on - then it's a mystery until I'm in the middle of traffic and I can no longer accelerate. Service is awful! No one should have to pay $45.00 for a light bulb change or $30 for wiper refills, or wait two months for a catalytic converter when your car has failed NJ state inspection emissions and you CANT DRIVE IT!!! Volkswagen service needs an improvement plan.

DON'T BUY IT!! I have had so many problems with this car. The Transmission, window regulators, the serpentine belt (twice)---which caused my a/c, alternator, and power steering pump to go out. Which I was charged, b/c the car was at 24,400 miles. VW has no pride in their cars, just ask the service manager if they drive one.... I promise, they don't!!!!

I have spent so much time in the shop with this car it is hard to think where to start. I really hate it. I have heard that if you can get one that was made in Germany, they are good quality cars. Mine was made in good ol Mexico, and have trouble with it regularly. fuel pump, window motors, AC pump, fog lights, head lights, and so on. The muffler fell off. VW wanted $400 just for the part. ouch! I spend no less that $1,500 on it annually.

This was my second Volkswagen. I bought this vehicle as a certified used car with a generous warranty. I have had NO problems with this car. It has never needed any mechanical service besides standard service. It handles great with "H" rated tires. I replaced the factory stereo with an aftermarket CD player, the factory speakers sound great. I get about 33 mpg on highway. this car is fun to drive and the 5 speed is smooth and simple. This car is bullet proof. It has gotten me out of trouble more than once with its awesome handling and braking. Can't say enough good things about this model.

We have spent over $4,000 on various sensors on this car in the past 8 months. It runs rough and doesn't start 30% of the time. The driver's side heated seat never worked after 3 attempts we quit asking. The driver's window dropped. The sunroof doesn't work at times. The check engine lite is on all the time. We will NEVER purchase another VW again.

This was a reliable and fun car. I never had any mechanical problems whatsoever. The only electrical issue i ran into was of course the window regulator and the instrument cluster. I loved the sound system and the body style most about the car. Sadly my wife was in a wreck which totaled my jetta, whats amazing is she had no injuries. The safety features were on point. Overall i would say say its a decent car to own!

From day one, this car has been nothing but trouble. I fell in love with the looks (exterior/interior), but failed to research warranty and reliability. Things that happened: Exterior paint has come off in some places, had to have emergency brake cable replaced, had to have spark plug re-wiring done, had to get starter replaced (engine died), and had to have muffler replaced all under 50,000 miles. Tires didn't last long, and neither did the brake pads. Repairs have cost me $2,500 plus and dealers were not helpful. Buyer Beware...I think I'll go back to Toyotas which never gave me trouble. The new Camry we have is GREAT!

I absolutely love my jetta, great car, and for 4 cylinders its pretty fast, definitely one of the best handling cars. Safe, and it looks awesome, great first car. Reliability has some issues though, it will go into the shop for a seemingly small repair that can come out to hundreds or even thousands of dollars. That was more the dealerships fault though for replacing it with cheap parts and selling it, now that mine is fixed, it runs strong with 130k miles. Me and this car have been through a lot together and I will be sad to see it go, when I sell it in a few months. Definitely prefer this over a Japanese car. Its worth the reliability issues and expensive maintenance.

Overall, I have to say that I love my car. I owned an 89 Jetta GLI and then a Subaru Outback before my current Jetta. The 89 Jetta had incredible problems, but it was always fun to drive. The Outback had no problem, but it wasn't fun to drive. I went back to VW because I wanted to enjoy driving again, and my Jetta has delivered. It is manual, and I would only get manual with such a great engine! But, of course, my Jetta has had its share of problems. They are the same as everyone else's: electrical, windows, O2 sensor, glove box, sunroof, etc. Perhaps because of my first Jetta's many issues, I don't seem to mind as much as others.

Well, I bought this car used and at first loved it - then - the windows wents down on both sides 2x's. the engine light comes once a year. the cup holder broke, the glove compartment broke, sunroof broke 2x's, plastic on the dash board has cracked, windshield cracked, the engine oil burns very quickly so have to check it every 1,000 miles. The volkswagon(hamilton,nj) dealership I go to is very good and have fixed the windows at no charge and check my oil for me at no charge and keep track of it for me. Yes, they know about the window problems and oil problems but there is no recall yet. And I also have that strange yellow goop everyone is talking about.

I bought this car for my parents to drive being a supposedly great car. Unfortunately, we have never seen such terrible reliability in a car. This car visits the dealership every other month with every breakdown possible from turbo, glowplugs, electrical, engine problems, carbon build up, door locks, lighting contols, stalling, not starting etc. etc. My parents are stuck driving their older Buick LeSabre most the time because it is the only car they can trust.

The Volkswagen Jetta is a descent little car, it is not very powerful, but sporty enough. I have had massive A/C problems ahough and it uses and leaks oil to the tune of a quart about every month and a half until we added Valvoline Max life...helped a lot. Also, this car has crazy engineering with the circuit breaker design. It drives OK and definitely is fuel efficient. Just hope you don't have to get it worked on.

I picked this car up for cheap, reason why its a 2.0 and not the infamous 1.8t or vr6. Stock the engine is just enough for A to B driving. Great for a working car or long trips thanks to its decent milage per gallon. If you looking for performance you should look at the 2.0 unless your into engine tuning and are willing to spend another 2,500 to supercharge or turbo the engine.

I live in a big city where small parking spots and tight turning radious are at a premium. The car never lacks for power and can do circles around all of the 8 cylinder taxis, as well as easily cruising at 80 MPH on the interstates. The short wheel base base makes the car very responsive, but it does cause you to rock forward and backward a little-but that is the same with any small car. One mechanical problem with the air sensor, but VW just the warranty and is paying even though I repared it two years ago. Negatives: serious wind noise and some interior parts (rear ashtry, rear cup holder, front-passenger door handle, wood grain) have jamed, cracked or just broke.

I really like this car. It has a good mix of features, fuel mileage, and handling for a low price. You do have rattles from time to time but the engine runs very well. My check engine light comes on, but it is only an emmisions indication. Don't worry too much about it, it will go off in a few days after in recalibrates. The windows are not the greatest,, but the car is really fun to drive and I love the fuel economy

This is the worst car I've ever owned. Almost every interior feature has broken, I've replaced a major engine part annually, and the warranty is a joke. Yes, it handles well, and yes, the body's nice, but beyond that this car has nothing to offer. Unless you want a car that's expensive to maintain and constantly in the shop, buy a Honda.

I bought this vehicle used. It is has all of the extra options such as a moonroof, power-everything, cruise, and a terrific sound system. I love the car so far. The one thing that I do not like about this car is the power window failure. Apparently this is common in Volkswagen cars and it is very expensive to repair.

I wish I had bought an Acura RSX for just allittle more money. Everything just keeps on going wrong with this car, for example cruise won't work, fuel latch won't work, remote entry won't work half the time, O2 sensor went bad, finally the transmission threw a gear uot the side of it. By the way a new transmission from vw is $2,500. I HATE THIS CAR!! Oh yeah the sorry cup holder broke. I guess I just got burned.

I just bought this car a few months ago and lucked out with a really nice, 85,000 one owner car. As with all Jettas both front power windows did not work but the dealer I bought it from replaced them for me. The car stinks off the line but is pretty peppy when up to speed, maybe the manuals are better? Had to replace the timing belt and went ahead and replaced the ater pump and serpentine belt. Trust me you WANT to do all this at the same time and try and do it yourself. Parts cost me less than $100, but if you paid someone to do it it would cost you. Fit and finish is good, cup holders are beyond a joke. Ride is good even with me stepping up to 17" wheels.MPG could B better getting 25.

But, volkswagen paid for the catlytic convertor cost. Apart from it, I really never had any major breakdowns. So far so good. I wan't to kepp it till its wheels falls off. Lets see how it goes.

Good car at first but always consumed lots of oil, keep an eye on dipstick ! Windows have always been an on/off problem but car has been reliable until 120,000 miles at which point electrical problems (misfiring) started to plague the car. Had it in several times for same problem. Still not resolved, dealership(s) can not find cause of problem so car now deemed unreliable (broke down 3 times in 1 month on major highways). VW Customer care is totally worthless. Will not reimburse me for out of pocket towing and car rental costs for VW parts gone bad.

1. I heard a big noisy explosion under the hood, the fumes were coming out everywhere, it was the battery that exploded covering all the engine with acid, 2. a fuse block that started to smoke, dealership said everything was fine, came back and had to use the extinguisher to fight the flames coming out of the battery, battery case, fuse blocks and everything around it. 3. had to replace the mass flow sensor (twice) 4. Glove box replaced (twice), 5. O2 sensor, 6. Replace tail lights every three months, 7. having to clean that yellow ooze coming down from the doors,8. Now it's overheating but dealer said there is no problem...

Primary reason for buying was to avoid semi-weekly gas station fillups as I have a 100 mi. daily commute. Milege is better than advertised. I get 49-52 mpg. Paying dividends now with gas > $2.00 and diesel @ $1.70! It has been extremely reliable, it has never broken down or failed to start, even in subzero New England weather. Never any problems with electrical. Glow plugs had to be replaced once (not needed to start car) and were rather expensive, but you can find them cheap on the internet rather than pay the dealerships insane prices. 135K miles to date and many more I'm sure. Great car.

I bought my new style Jetta in June of 2002. With only 27000 miles on it at the time, I got a great deal. I have had few problems since buyibg it. The plastic clips holding the window broke causeing the passanger side window to be stuck down for a couple of days, but I cant complain bc the dealership fixed it w/o any charge to me. I had to replace a vacume line after the engine light came on, which was a little expensive if it weren't for the extended waranty. The cup holders could use some improvement, but other than these few "problems", this car has been great.

Those who give it praise now will indeed curse this car in the future. I have seen people judge their cars by whether or not they were stranded while driving. This car has stranded me 6 times since purchased in May 1999. That may not seem like much to other Jetta drivers (who probably have not been this fortunate), but I can assure you that it has been quite a disappointing journey for me. I will not go into detail about what has happened to this car during the last three years, due to limited space! Lets just say that I have put nearly $5000 into this car since after the 24000 mile mark!

You may look good driving a Jetta but you wont look so cute shelling out money every month for repairs. In less than two years I have replaced the cerpentine belt, the passenger window fell through the door, shocks and brakes, mass air flow filter, many small repairs, $40 oil changes and last but not least the catalytic converter. This single part costs around $1,000 and usually lasts the lifetime of most cars but not the jetta. The cup holder needs to be thrown out the window and I dont know what to do with the gunk that drips from the doors! You've been warned!

Over the past 6-9 months I have replaced the power steering rack ($1200), the catalytic converter ($900), all four brake pads and rotors ($700 because warning light never told me pads were low), both front windows have fallen off the tract (VW paid), replaced three different kinds of sensors ($800) etc. (I'm running out of space...) Complete lemon. Others I know have had same problems.

Check engine light is constantly on, requiring oxygen sensors, air sensors etc. Also, problems with the remote, including the car locking automatically with the keys inside. It's sad I cannot give this car a positive review. Yes it's fun to drive and yes it's nicely appointed. However, this car has been a constant source of pain for my wife and me. Beginning the first year, the check engine light came on. Having the dealer examine it under warranty, no worries. But, as expected, 2 months after the warranty expired, the mass air sensor had to be replaced for a cost of over $400.00. While VW has admitted known issues with this part, other consistent failures have apparently existed such as issues with ignition coils and fuel injectors. All failures point to wiring issues. They made a dreadful judgement in error and built these in Mexico. Shame on VW!

I loved this car when I first got it! Then the problems kicked in. By now I've learned to live with most of them. It began with the windows and radio/cassette player having minds of their own. They did what they wanted when they wanted. I had the windows looked at and the radio replaced three times. Speaking of three, the starter was replaced three times. I replaced the tires, brakes, rotors, windshield wiper motor. The cupholder is a joke, can anything fit in there besides change? Electrical problems.

My dashboard was put in crooked at the factory, something I did not notice for several months. I had all the usual problems with the oxygen and mass airflow sensors, replaced 3 or 4 times (I forget which), cupholders, green ooze in the doors, poor key, 2 second delay when getting into gear on the automatic transmission. etc. Also an "endearing" noise in the front dash that occurs each year at through the cold weather season. Probably some metal parts contracting and vibrating in the cold. I contacted the president of VW in Germany, got a letter back from Germany saying that some one in the US would come out and look at my car. No one ever showed.

All of the problems listed here I have dealt with too, except for the green stuff in the door. The latest: it thinks it is in reverse when it is in park. It won't start in park (only in neutral). When I have it in drive all the gears light up on the instrument panel. My mechanic called TWO VW dealers and VW claims that they have never heard of such a thing! Mechanically the car is in park, but the computer senses it's in reverse. (I replaced the neutral safety switch because that's what they thought was wrong, but it wasn't that ... $250 down the drain). I will NEVER buy another VW.

The electrical system on my 1999 Volkswagen Jetta is a nightmare. Push the button down and the window goes up. The flashers went out 4 times in 5 years. I also really enjoyed the weird green oily junk that comes out of the doors in warm weather. In cold weather, ice builds up behind the doors to the point it caused a dent when I opened the door. Leaves, pine needles etc. have no problem finding their way into the trunk and door trim. Don't even think about trying to replace the bulb in the tail light, that requires a trip to the dealership.

Looks Good, Works Badly

Amazing, all of the problems I've had with this car are echoed in this list of reviews. I bought the car three months ago and it's been returned for service five times already. The last time it wouldn't shift out of 3rd gear. I'm trading it in for something more reliable. The oxygen sensor, tranmission problems, mass air sensor replaced twice, non-working rear window defogger, broken cupholders, broken sunroof sliding cover. I'm disgusted. This thing is a money pit. It's a beautifully designed, but badly executed vehicle. When it worked, though, it was fun to drive.

This is my third VW and when I drove it from the dealers lot, I was very pleased. Since then there has been the problem with wear and ride of my Good year Eagles (dealer replaced), the springs popping out of my from seats, the MAF sensor ($400 for the part), the constantly blown driver side break light, the dead alternator (36,000 mi, $850 to replace), and finally the front window lift failures (acknowledged as a defect by VW after many years). And need I say the long wait times for a maintenance appointment at the dealer.
