I've had my 2013 GTI for nearly one year. Love driving the car, performance, economy, styling, are all excellent. My car went in for a 10K Service at the Dealership and came away with a clean bill of health. Then 6 weeks later, the coolant light came on. Dealership diagnosed as a fault with a new water pump part on 2013 models. Significant work removing and reinstalling engine bay parts to repair. While it was at dealership, they identified an additional fault - apparently through engine diagnostics - and it required a replacement intake manifold. More engine bay parts removed and reinstalled. I am now very concerned about the long-term reliability proposition for this vehicle.

Final update on this car: I have had almost three trouble free (well, after the initial "out of the box" problem) years of driving this car, and put just over 48K miles on it. Replaced the original Pirelli PZero tires at 46K miles. All other maintenance has been per the book - the only exception is that I changed the oil at 5K mile intervals vs the factory recommended 10K interval. This has been a great car to drive both in town and on extended road trips. Gas mileage has always been excellent - low to mid 20s in town (with spirited driving) and low to mid 30s on the highway. Handles very well / feels very stable on the road in all conditions. No significant rattles or squeaks yet. All finishes inside and out look factory new. Great performance, great value.

Only car I've bought two of back/back

With over 2 dozen cars in my personal history, the 4-door GTI is the only one I've bought two of in a row. I usually like to "try the field", but found my level of perfection with GTI. Bought a CPO 07' in 10', and had no hesitation with replacing it with a top-of-the-line Autobahn model in 2013. $30k does put you in a different altitude for car choices, but a 4-door GTI is unique and perfect. Fits 4 adults, fun, useful, and respected by those who are higher up the food chain. I get several compliments from BMW and Porsche owners on mine. The DSG transmission really "makes the car". Sure, manual is probably best for the purist. But the DSG is simply fantastic.

Simply amazing car... the 2.0 Turbo is quick. It is strong all through the rev range, very little turbo lag. I drive a considerable distance on the interstate, and it revs high at 75-80 mph (turning over 3000 rpm). As such, I have to work to get 30 mpg out of it, although at 60 it gets mid-30's easy. It has an Audi-grade interior and fit/finish, love the plaid seats and they are very comfortable (and heated!). The gauges light up white/grey/red and match the upholstory well. This is the only car on the planet that I prefer the automatic over a stick; the DSG is brilliant! My car also has the Pirelli tires as opposed to the Dunlops. The GTI is a ball to drive, but civilized, too.

I have owned my 2013 GTI Autobahn edition for 1 year. Nothing but trouble since I took ownership. The coolant pump failed 3 times, check engine lights pop up every other month due to multiple sensor failures. I have 30,000 miles on the car and I am dumping it like a bad habit for a more reliable vehicle. If you like fixing your car ALOT, buy a GTI. It drives well, but often will have mechanical problems. Update-dumped the GTI, got a Subaru impreza, very happy with the purchase.

VW customer service is amazingly terrible by any standard (Beechmont VW Cincy OH) I loved my GTI - for driving not owning. Water pump failure 12,000 miles un-diagnosed engine tick at 24,000 miles that VW would not honor warranty rental reimbursement policy Service department's complete lack of skill sets with managing their customers concerns with any level of empathy or real concern. There is so much about this car that I love- performance, handling, comfort, over all design (exterior & interior) BUT I will never buy a VW again and will tell everyone I know to never do so based off my customer service experience with them (while still under warranty which was the scary part to me) I traded in for a Honda Accord Sport Manual- i miss my turbo, handling and the comfort of the seats on long road trips but I am so happy to no longer have to deal with VW corporate. Oh and no major parts failures with the Honda either!

I bought this car because it is sporty, has nice styling and has nice, quick, responsive performance. My previous car was a 2003 Nissan 350z. I really like the handling, design, power and looks out of the box. I also added a software upgrade from the dealer that boosted my HP considerably making it even quicker. The car has been on 3 5k road trips and for the most part performed well. One thing I like about it on road trips is that it has nice performance but is not flashy...I drive into diverse areas and the last thing I want to do is draw attention that you would get with an Audi, MB, BMW, etc Beware of signature water pump and intake manifold issues with the 2.0 liter engine.

2nd Mark VI, 3rd GTI

Had a Mark I for 12 years, base Mark VI for 3 and now this one. Switched from manual to auto and 2 door to four. Great car. Came from a string of BMWs (Z3, Z4, 3 series) and honestly prefer GTI. Especially in Autobahn form. Very Germanic. Solid, well crafted, highly competent. Excellent fuel mileage and very good performance. It's not a rocket and that's fine with me. I love the silence of the cockpit, the Dynaudio sound is great and the telematics work very well. I'm honestly surprised I like the DSG as much as I do, having been in a manual for 35 years. But it truly is a lot of fun, and when in bad traffic, great to have.

Purchased brand new, great deal on price at $1050 under invoice. No cost tint and other extras. Sales process excellent. But am very disappointed. Took car out for first drive still using the "free" gas provided at delivery. After driving just over 100 miles out town in southern Arizona heat, the car stalled. Happened five times. Engine malfunction light came on steady amber. Four times the engine stalled in stop and go traffic. One time it turned itself off on the highway at 55mph! Car has 242 original miles on it. Got it back to the dealer where they are checking it out. Have to say that I do not trust this new car at all. So far, the dealer has been very responsive, will provide updates!

Bought my base model manual GTI in April 2013 to use for work. I drive all over the state of Texas visiting clients for my job and I have never been disappointed with this car. Equally comfortable on the highway or in town. Fast, excellent and communicative handling and brakes, great mileage, and big enough to carry all my work stuff. I call on all types of automotive repair shops and parts suppliers and get a compliment on the car at least once a day no matter if they work on Chevys or Mercedes. I went with United Gray to make it less conspicuous and have only gotten one ticket in the first 17,000 miles. Love the car but am considering trading up to a Golf R when I hit 50K.

I bought this car 2 years ago (had 57k miles) for my 16 year old daughter, she learned to drive a manual in my old mini, and she knows how to drive it properly and doesn't hold the clutch down at stop lights. She put about 30k on in two years and in that time i replaced the intake manifold, water pump, clutch, both radiator fans and hoses, and the fuel door (the spring broke in the door so I had to buy whole new assembly and have it repainted to match the car). Fortunately I'm able to do all these repairs my self (except the painting), but even the parts are super expensive. The manifold, water pump and clutch are all labor intensive repairs, I don't even want to think what the dealer would charge for these. This is for a car with less then 90K miles on it. Other than the repair issues the car is great, has plenty of power, great stereo, drives really nice, at least for a front wheel drive car. I'm a german car fan, I own a Q5 and BMW 5 series as well, so its a bit disappointing, and we plan to get my daughter something more reliable before she goes off to college.

Great Car for under $25k

Had my 4-door GTI for 2 months & about 2k miles. What really puts this car over the edge are the little things that make you realize the designers put extra thought into the car: the front doors have three different stops, allowing you to open them at up to a 90 degree angle; the foot-wells are lit at night; the ambient lighting around the center console at night; there is fabric lining the cubbys in the doors and the glovebox; the red stitching throughout the cabin. In many cars, these extra touches aren't there and you don't miss them. But this car was designed for driving pleasure by car people, not by the bean counters. At around $25k, this car is a bargain.

This car does everything well. Interior and exterior fit and finish are excellent. The car has plenty of power and delivers it uniformly with almost no turbo lag. The gearbox shifts easily and quickly and clutch uptake is very smooth. Handling is precise with just a bit of understeer which can be corrected with a little extra gas. With 18" wheels, the ride is firm but not punishing. I might consider switching to 17" wheels when it's time for new tires. Fuel economy matches the EPA estimate around town and it's easy to exceed the 31 MPG rating on the highway. It's a pleasure to drive this car anywhere under any conditions. Update: After three years of ownership, this is still a satisfying car to drive. I am about ready to replace the original Pirelli Pzero tires but will keep the 18" wheels to reduce costs. The car still rides hard on rough roads and I hope a switch to different tires will improve comfort. There have been two problems covered by warranty: The water pump leaked and was replaced by the dealer in Flagstaff, AZ during a road trip. The car was later recalled for this problem. The infotainment system stopped working and was also replaced. The body and interior have held up well. We have taken several 1,500-mile-plus road trips and there's enough room inside for two people with their luggage and a bicycle. The infotainment system with Sirius XM has lots of options and the sound quality is good. The navigation system is comprehensive and easy to use. I'll be keeping the car for several more years. This is the last of the German-built GTIs and it has been a good experience. Update 8/2019: Now, after six years and 52,500 miles, all is well. I replaced the 18" wheels with 17" and the car is now much lighter on its feet. I also replaced the Pirelli P Zero tires with Falken all-season radials and the ride is smoother and quieter. There have been no mechanical issues. Interior and exterior remain in good condition. Update 11/5/2020: Beware the check-engine light. The light came on in August but I didn't notice any drivability issues. However, the problem turned out to be a sensor in the intake manifold which required replacement of the entire manifold. This was an expensive repair but it did slightly improve drivability and fuel economy. This is a known issue in some VWs and its repair is covered by VW on other models but not this GTI. After 67k miles and 7 years, the GTI remains both practical and fun to drive. Not planning on replacing it anytime soon. Update 6/12/2022: Good news from VW: Received a letter extending the warranty on the intake manifold to 10 years or 120k miles. They reimbursed me for 90% of the repair in 2020 by my mechanic. Others in this discussion should also be happy. Only one minor problem: had the A/C Schrader valves replaced and system recharged. Continues to be fun, practical, and reliable. Update 1/5/2024: The GTI developed a small leak in the water pump that required replacing it; the same issue that arose in 2015 (see above). This was an expensive repair but worth it for an otherwise reliable, fun-to-drive vehicle. Overall, the vehicle is aging well, now with 87k miles. The car is always garaged so no significant wear on the interior or exterior. No plans to replace the GTI anytime soon. Update 7/9/2024: No problems to report at more than 89k miles. The A/C system remains powerful and the interior is cold even in this broiling AZ summer. Plan to keep the GTI on the road as long as possible.

I've had my GTI for about 2 weeks now, and overall, I'm very impressed. Plenty of power, good gas mileage, firm (but not punishing ride). It feels very solid and well put together. Seats are comfortable and supportive. Just took it on an 800 mile trip, and it was a joy to drive. I kind of wish I had gotten the manual, but with a long commute to work the DSG made more sense. It shifts very quickly, and I've only noticed a very slight delay at launch. Nothing major, as I've read on some other reviews. The GPS graphics are a little cheesy, and the map data is very outdated, despite VW telling me I have the latest version in it. But it's easy to use and pretty quick with calculations.

I struggled with the decision of which car I would be buying. I wanting something safe, practical (for my soon to be growing family) and fun to drive. The GTI has exceeded all of my expectations. I decided to purchase the DSG Autobahn model and it is stunning. It is a smooth drive and has just enough "get-up" for me to navigate around Houston drivers. My two golden retrievers fit in the back with the seats laid down

I leased my 2014 GTI in February of 2014 and it has been nothing but problems since day 1. My heater did not work properly and my front tire was losing air about every 5 days from the day I purchased it. To make things worse the dealer wanted me to pay to fix so I had to contact customer care. They eventually did pay to have these fix but I have now had 3 more problems since, including having to put in a new water pump twice. I am tired of having to take my car into the dealer every month and this seems ridiculous to me for a car that is brand new. The reliability of this car is very poor and its sad that Volkswagen does not stand behind their vehicles. Customer service has been terrible.

Time came to replace a much loved Mazda RX8 with a vehicle my wife could be induced to drive in place of our SUV. The RX8 was a delightful sports car but 17-19mpg around town and 20-22 mpg on the highway was no better than the SUV. And though "do-able" for two adults, an eight year old kid and big dog, it was hardly convenient. And for traffic a six speed manual could be torture (my wife says.) Considered a MINI and a TSX SportWagon but the MINI was too small (with 2 doors) and the TSX too long for the garage space. The GTI is perfect. Fun to drive. The DSG can match a very good MT. Solid, quiet, fast (and quick). For all but ski trips, it nearly equals the convenience of our Sorento.

After a year and a half of driving my 2013 GTI I have to say, Great Car! This is our road trip car, so it is used primarily for highway cruising and long days of driving. It is fast, fun and frugal. What more could you ask for? -----UPDATE----- Well, it isn't just for road trips any more, just turned 45k miles and not much has changed, the car is Great! I have been especially impressed with how well the car has held up (I had a 2002 that I loved, but it admittedly had its issues), I have not had a single recall or any mechanical issue with the car, ZERO. Gas, oil, tires and unplugging the sound maker under the dash, that is all I have done. It is still fast and fun, I keep track of my gas mileage pretty religiously and have averaged 30.7 mpg. My biggest complaints are with the Tire Pressure Monitoring System which sometimes has a mind of it's own and the OEM tires which I have finally worn out and replaced with something a bit more sporty. All said it is really just a premium economy car. But with plenty of power, sporty but comfortable handling and a very nice interior. What more do you really need? Drive on! -----UPDATE----- I absolutely love this car. Still with me, almost 64,000K and still no real issues outside of tires, I am now running BFGOODRICH g-Force COMP-2 A/S, but have hit a couple big pot holes and had to replace one. There is a intermittent squeak coming from the rear hatch, and one form the sunglasses holder in the console in front of the sunroof, but nothing else to even complain about. My total fuel economy has dropped .2 mpg over the last 20k miles but I have done more city driving, so that is understandable. I have been waiting for something to fail and nothing has. I have read horror stories about carbon buildup on the direct injection engines, and wonder if I have just not noticed degradation in power? Great Car! When it is time for something new VW will be on my list.

Fuel pump goes at 14K under warranty. Water pump goes at 17K. Under warranty. Front suspension bushing breaks at 38K. Under warranty. LED headlights stop working at 45K. Under warranty. Map sensor for fuel pump goes at 61K (not under warranty). 67k miles, car switches off for no reason at 75mph. Had to get towed. 21K, 43K, 89K and 132K burst tires from bumpy roads. Low profile tires suck. Replaced tires. 95K engine deposits are excessive had to get that fixed. Car starts burning excessive oil at 121K. 1 quart every 2000 miles. Constant low oil warning lights on bends. A/C stops working at 110K. Must have spend at least 15K getting everything fixed. The car soldiered on to 170K miles. The transmission is now done at 170K. Car was maintained per service schedule and oil changed every 5 K miles. The engine in good but that is about it. i cant wait to drive it into a lake to get rid of it.

Great to drive not so good on quality

I have owned my GTI for 3 years and it has been a pleasure to drive, grips the road beautifully and is very comfortable on long trips. The interior materials, fit and finish are excellent. However, I'm starting to seriously doubt the quality of this car. At 13K miles the cooling pump failed, it was quickly fixed under warranty. In the last month, at 30K miles (mostly highway), my clutch completely failed and was replaced under warranty. I have been driving manual transmissions for the past 20 years and have never had one fail on me, clearly a manufacturing failure. To top it off, last week the cooling pump failed again!!! My dealer charges $750.00 to replace the cooling pump, fortunately it is still under warranty, but an expense likely to be incurred in the future. I have mixed feelings on recommending the GTI. If you can overlook the maintenance and having the car at the shop often, the GTI is an great driving experience. But, if you are looking for something reliable, there are probably better options out there. I will likely trade it for something else.

This car's virtues are pretty clear: Smooth and peppy engine, cabin comfort and quality, relatively good fuel economy, roomy rear seats, tight handling. It's a joy to drive, whether on a twisty two-lane road or a long freeway trip. I have the base 4 door with a stick, so I can't join the debate on the merits of the DSG transmission or the stone-age nav. The stick shifts like butter, although it could use a taller sixth gear for fuel economy, this engine has plenty of torque and would easily handle lower RPMs in cruise control at freeway speeds. The negatives are pretty well laid out at this point too: High repair and maintenance costs, particularly water pump and intake manifold problems, along with general brand image degradation from the diesel scandal. I have been fortunate to get the water pump fixed twice under warranty, the last time with an updated part that is supposed to cure the issue. The infotainment system is truly two generations behind, with an Applecentric connector cable and Blutooth that never got along with my Samsung phone. It took VW until 2016 to introduce new technology more comparable to the competition. Right at delivery I replaced the factory 18" "Detroit" rims (too gaudy anyway) with 17" VW Goal rims off a Passat. These do help the ride quite a bit and I don't drive aggressively enough to notice any loss of cornering response. I highly recommend this modification for anyone buying a used GTI that needs tires. UPDATE 2016: Door latch actuator failed at 56k. This would have been $400 to have the dealer fix it. Overall I still really enjoyed the car but looking at other reviews regarding maintenance costs I decided to trade it for a 2016 model, which got me a modern infotainment system and avoided the cost of fixing the actuator, replacing tires, and doing 60,000 mile service. I expect to keep this one no more than 60k based on my experience with the 2013.

I owned my 2013 GTI with convenience package and sunroof for 2 years and I loved it. I had no issues with the car and it’s such a blast to drive. I loved the Clark plaid interior and the seats were the best I’ve ever had. My navy blue exterior looked great, and wasn’t too showy. The car is peppy yet comfortable for a daily driver. The infotainment Navigation etc worked just great and paired with my Bluetooth easily every time in the car, but it wasn’t the best resolution. I loved the car a ton and I miss it. I moved to an area with lots of snow and thought I should get a car with AWD. I bought a 2015 Audi A3 and even though it’s they same company, same platform as the GTI, I liked driving the GTI more and I miss it. Those seats are fantastic.

This is not a comfortable long distance ride. Performance is great, however, I would have rather had a manual trans that gives you more of a feeling of "driving" not riding.

My only issue with this car was the original mpg rating of 28-33. Never came close, averaging 18-20mpg, albeit most of this was city driving. Love my GTI, but looking for a more fuel efficient ride.

2013 Volkswagen GTI Drivers Edition (4-Door)

Bought this GTI in 2014, exactly one year after original owner purchased, with 11k miles. 6 years later, I’ve only accumulated 36k miles, but I couldn’t be more impressed with the long-term quality and reliability of this VW. This is my 7th, and longest owned Volkswagen, at 36 years old. I had some pretty amazing VW examples, including a 2004 Passat W8 4-Motion 6-Speed Manual, and a 2008 Golf R32. This 2013 has some considerable modifications, but was/is every bit as exciting and enjoyable as the two previously mentioned VW MVPs. I love this car, and have not had one minor issue or service visit, outside of standard maintenance. Materials, finishes and initial quality have held up impeccably. Will probably buy an SUV in a couple years, and keep the GTI as a ‘weekend/fun car”. Absolutely no reason to part with it, and I’d be sad to let her go. Fast, confident, solid, reliable, fun, beautiful and just an enjoyable car all around.

Have loved this car since the first drive. Very spirited car, roomy and functional. Once they become available, looking at a 2023 R as a trade up! 11/23: Have ordered a Lapis Blue 6M R. Supposed to arrive Spring 2024. Will be sad to let GTI go but def excited for AWD/315HP.
