My 2006 Volkswagen GTI has been great so far. The DSG transmission is a kick in the butt. Thou it is winter here and I can't get a real chance to let it all out, the car seems to handle great even with the all season tires. Come on summer.

The hottest car I've ever owned!

I just bought it on 5/17 and the only thing I'm unhappy about is having to wait so long for lunch and to go home! I don't know what it takes for some of you to rate a car highly, but this is the best vehicle I've owned out of 30. It has unbelievable handling, a superb interior, it's full of features, and I got 26 mpg on the first tank. This car has that intangible "right" feel like no other. Its power is an absolute blast, it's fun to embarrass other cars that cost quite a bit more. Its suspension tuning is spot on. It has safety features are everywhere. I felt drunk the first few days of ownership. I also considered the Civic Si sedan, but couldn't wait and 129 lb. ft. of torque won't cut it for me.

So I've had my 2006 Volkswagen GTI for less than a week now and love it! I went to go test drive it, not even thinking of buying it. I just did some research that day too. I was shopping for the Subaru WRX and Civic Si for a while, and then found the GTI. WOW. The power is comprable to the WRX. It has more features and more room to be comfortable too. The standard 6- Disc MP3-CD Player in Dash was a major thing for me since I listen to only MP3 CDs. Then I wanted the power, which I talked about. Yeah 2.0 Turbo 200hp. I'm used to Hondas, but this is a fairly good transition. I highly recommended the GTI as a teenage car. It has plenty of head room in front and rear!

This is my wife's car and i want one! She was driving a 2005 Toyota Sienna van, which is great for a big family but not for tooling around LA. This car is really well built - go VW! The paddles on the wheel rock, plus the tiptronic too. It is great to have the hatchback feature. We also looked at the Audi A3 with the same engine, but opted for the GTI.

This is my second Volkswagen GTI and I must say they get a bad rap on the speed and handling sides. With a straight (no cat) exhaust system and a set of TEIN coils I'm able to hustle Nissan 350Zs and stock Honda S2000s to the point of spin in the moutians. All while being able to clock repeatable 14.4s @ 94 mph at the local drag strip. Try to find that elsewhere with heated seats and 150 mph stability in other cars for $350 a month.

This car is exactly what I thought it would be. It will turn heads with its 18" wheels. One recommendation is get the gorilla gear and GTI mats. Your fast is worth the extra $700. This is a great car, everyone should have one.

This car has an excellent, smooth automstic transmission. The shift paddles provide an instant response. My radio is very good except for the volume limiter. It has good brakes and the car is rock steady at high speeds. All of the buttons are illuminated as is the great rotary moonroof control. It is a hatchback with headroom unlike many I won't mention. There is a wide field of illumination from the headlights. It gets the looks where ever ya' go. All for $23.000.

This is the GTI I've been waiting for. Its design stays true to what this car was suposed to be: fast, fun and funky looking. I've been into GTIs ever since they came out with their 1991 16V which kicked butt. I love the look of mine with the plaid inserts. The tranny is smooth and the throws are short. Love my metallic gray GTI!

This happens to be one of the most fun car to drive. I use it as a daily drive for work. And my commute is usually a 1 1/2hr commute through Boston traffic, and ever since I got this car, the commute is a whole new experience. The DSG is the best transmission i have ever driven. The Bi-Xenons are great, while the fogs adds little to barely noticeable lighting. I love the steering wheel also, and MFD (Multi-Function Display). The only negative things that I have to say about the car is the BUILD, it seems that there are just minor details that aesthetically are unappealing, more minor annoyances but dealable/fixable. Overall, I LOVE THIS CAR!!!!

My wife and I bought our GTI as a compromise since she hates manual transmissions. Get the SMG option and this car is PERFECT. I have been converted. The clutch pedal is now a dinosaur. This thing shifts faster and MUCH smoother than a standard shifter (note 0-60 is faster too with SMG). There is a fully automatic mode too. The car is very fast, has a buttery smooth engine and tranny, and is extremely comfortable (I have a bad back). Its handling is crisp and precise, great steering wheel feel. My previous car was a Mazda Miata, and this thing is even more tossable in corners and fun to drive.

My son and I just bought a pair of matching GTIs. I can't tell you how impressed we are! They are very fast, comfortable, economical and just plain fun! A word of caution to all who are contemplating getting the ground effects kit. I had mine installed yesterday and found that the factory black side skirts are epoxied on! When they removed them some paint came with it! After a minor paint and buff on the glue areas it's perfect. I wish I could post a picture because the improvement in looks is well worth it! The original black trim is too "Golf" looking to me. The DSG is simply amazing and the handling and brakes are superb. I would highly recommend this car to anyone....period.

I just picked my GTI up and I love everything about it! I drove a few cars before deciding in this one, including the Honda Civic Si, Mazda3, Scion tC, and Subaru WRX. Each one had things that I liked, but the GTI had it all. It has great acceleration and handling and lots of room for your stuff. I love the stereo. It comes with tons of standard features. The other cars felt kinda cheap in comparison.

I recently tried all the small cars around, and no kidding, dropped in a VW dealer because they had Acuras, and the Audi A3. I drove the GTI, and it smoked everything. It has great practical space, tighter handling, shorter braking, and is faster. I was in the market for an A3 or similar, but based upon first test drive, and the better fuel efficiency, I bought my GTI on the same day. I got a Black Pack 2 with DVD Nav. Absolutely everything about its performance is perfect, the ergonomics are a 10, handling a 9, Braking a 9.5, it has tons of features, and fit and finish are a 10. But the speakers are rather lackluster. They sound shrill in the mid-range. Of course the DVD NAV is great, but the DVD Nav warning stinks.

I moved from a Mark IV Jetta to this car. I really liked the Jetta's combination of high quality feeling and good looking interior with an appealing exterior. The new GTI takes all of the things I liked about the Jetta and moves them up a few notches. I opted to get package 2 which includes many great options like heated, leather, sport seats, a great sunroof, 6-disk CD changer, and much more. I like the overall feel of this car better than anything. The interior is better than many cars costing substantially more. It just seems like it was designed with all the things I want, the way I want them. Great Car!

On a closed track I have run my 2006 GTI 2.0 against the following. 2003 Subaru WRX. I beat it. 2006 Dodge Charger Hemi, short track, only about 1/8 mile, I beat it. 2006 Pontiac GTO short track, I beat it. 2006 Pontiac G6, long track, I beat it. I know the GTO and Charger should have beaten me but it comes down to the driver as well. I have driven all of the above cars and mine is the easiest to drive as well. Only thing I don't like about my GTI is that the shifter feels a little sluggish. It has no problem shifting, but it doesn't have the crispness that the short shifter in my Acura had. Overall, this is an outstanding car. I haven't been beat yet!

This is an amazing car for the price and offers great little features not found in normal cars! I love the FSI (fuel straight injection) because it delivers a constant torque to the wheels throughout the acceleration! Although the car looks small it is actually rather comfortable and roomy inside! I'm a 6 foot guy and I still manage to get about 5 inches of headroom in the back seats! The interior is amazing as well as the blue or red LED display. The stock auto leveling xenon lights and audio controls in the steering wheel are awesome! The ride is comfortable when dealing with big dips in highways and small humps in the city streets. This is an amazing car and well worth the price I paid!

While only owning this car for about a month, I've had the opportunity to take a couple of 250 mile trips. On the interstates, this car is fairly civilized and comfortable; it's an absolute blast on the back roads. The exhaust note stirs the soul without being obnoxious. Driving around town sounds like it would be bothersome as my car is a 6-speed manual but, the gearing is such that you're only shifting to 3rd gear and possibly dropping it in 5th if you can cruise. This car is considered by some to be expensive for its class. I feel that you get what you pay for. What I paid for is a very well made, fun to drive, economical and well thought out car.

I traded in a Hummer H2 for this little GTI due to the recent fuel prices. I was only getting 11 mpg city and 15 highway in the H2. Also the H2 only has a 30 gallon tank. It was costing me an additional $300 dollars a month on top of the monthly payment. The GTI gets 24 mpg city and over 30 highway. My fast saves me over $2,000 dollars a year in gas plus I took a loan out for fewer years. My insurance went down as well.

I love the sunroof and the automatic transmission drives like a $40,000 car. I'm 47, guys, and I also have a $45,000 plus Lexus. The responsivness of the GTI is unmatched. I purchased a 2006 GTI in June. My vehicle is has less than 3,000 miles on it. I gave it to my son for doing well in high school and earning a college scholarship. On his first trip to school from Clearwater, FL to Florence, SC the A/C compressor cracked in half, backed off the enginge and shreded the belt. He made it as far as Orlando. The parts are back ordered three weeks. The mechanic at VW informed me that he has three Passats waiting for the same part. It appears to be a recall candidate, yet VW America denies any issues. I purchased this vehicle for piece of mind as my son's campus is about 500 miles away and it breaks down on first trip to school. VW's customer service has been terrible. Beware, 2006 GTI may be fun to drive, but it has problems.

I shopped around, and the Volkswagen GTI seemed to offer the best bang for the buck as far as features and options are concerned. I had a 2002 Turbo Beetle, but this car is much more fun to drive and more comfortable to boot. It has no turbo lag, tons of torque, handles well, and interior is very nice. I like having the 6 speed transmission to run on the freeway at much lower RPM's. I only have 250 miles on it so far, so my initial impressions are all positive, except for the stereo, which lacks bass on the low end. The Monsoon sound system in my Bug sounded much better. The steering wheel they threw in this car is nice too.

All gears have something to offer: first and second for zipping around the city, third and fourth for passing / getting out of jams, and fifth and sixth for the long trips and showing off. Yes, 5 and 6 still have plenty of pep. 207 lbs. of torque! Oh... Compare your service plan to the GTI.

For any of you who have owned an older GTI like me (less an MKI or MKII), then you probably loved your car, but always felt something was missing. The MKV eliminates any hard feelings from the past! This car drives, handles, looks, and feels the part of a true sport coupe...all the while having the fit and feel of a German car. There is truly no comparison in overall cost-effective driving enjoyment to the new GTI. Japan simply can't match the driver interface and dynamics that the Germans can produce. Hurrah to VW for getting the GTI back on track...figuratively and litterally!

I was debating between getting the GTI and a Jetta TDI. I drove both, loved the fun, performance, handling, and DSG paddles on the steering wheel of the GTI. But really liked the idea of 45 MPG of the TDI. My wife drove both and said get the GTI, it's so much fun to drive, even at 53 you are too young for an old man car like the TDI. What can I say, I got the reflex silver, DSG, pkg. 1 GTI about a week later. After 2,500 miles I have no complaints at all, this is a great car. My car came with the heavy duty mats and hatch cover, people have asked where to get them as they are so useful.

This vehicle has had 3 cracked windshields in less than 2 years, and we can't see where anything hit it causing the crack. What we have seen is the crack occurs in an unusual pattern each time, in a 90 degree angle, looking like an "L" shape. The dealership says it's a coincidence. We disagree. Even the dealership says they haven't seen this pattern of crack before but they deny it has to do with the window shield frame or the installation pattern. We are sick of dealing with this and are worried that this is going to affect our premium for insurance.

For the price, this is one of the best cars you can buy. I looked at a Civic Si and RSX Type-S, both of them had no low end power at all, both needed to be reved to the sky and you were ALWAYS shifting. The GTI has torque on tap all the time. It pulls on the highway in 6th gear with little trouble. The design on the interior is well done. The package 0 and 1 however aren't as good looking as the package 2 interior, but the cloth seats are great looking. As far as sound systems go, the GTI has nothing near a killer stock system, but that's not why you buy this car. Its ride is great for the every day driver, even for the driver with the sporty side to them. The 6-speed transmission shifts are short and distinct.

First off, the GTI is definitely not slow. 200 horsepower in a small hatchback runs it in the 1/4 mile in about 14.7. That is a fast car. The styling also does not stink. It has great exterior and interior styling. I love the looks of this car, but that is a personal opinion thing. Last but not least are the seats. I have nothing else to say except my dad has a C6 Corvette and I like my seats better. Besides the fact that you can get plaid, like I did, they are supportive and hold you in the turns.

So far the car's been great. I was specifically looking for a black one with the 18 inch Hufeisen Wheels. It took a couple of days but a dealer found one and gave it to me for its invoice price ($24,000). I didn't get leather because leather stinks in the summer time. This car is super fun to drive. It has the pick up and handling that I want in a sporty little car, but also has the comfort and practicality of being able to go on long road trips. I looked at Mini Coopers and was all set to buy one until I drove this car. It blows the Mini away in interior comfort and space, yet is comparable in performance. Also, the inside quality of the GTI is way better than the Mini's which comes off as cheap, plasticy and CRAMMPED. You can actually fit people in the back, pick up groceries, and haul around two 100+ pound dogs in the back, yet always feel like you have the speed, response, and fun of a sports car. Its gas mileage is good too! Buy it...you won't be let down.

In 2004 at the Paris Auto Salon, I sat in a first-run European-spec 2004 VW GTI in Candy White. The quality of the interior and exquisite attention to detail alone convinced me that I had to have one. Two years later, VWoA released it and I picked one up the second day I was back in the States in Tornado Red (as my German friend said, "the only color of the GTI"). The driving dynamics, build quality, and powerful 2.0TFSI engine all combine to make a magnificent driving experience. I have yet to suffer a single problem (knock on wood) with 5,500 miles. I'm lucky to have a wonderful dealer in my area.

This is by far the best car I have owned. It's safe, I get about 30-35 mpg on the highway, and the car is quick out of the box. I did have mine chipped by GIAC and I am now in love with this car. The gas mileage is the same and it's a blast to drive. Also, I have yet to take it to the dealer for any warranty issues. VW has stepped up their quality big time from previous generations. This car brings me back to my first car which was a 1984 Rabbit GTI.

I drive my 2006 GTI on the weekends through the mountains and can really take the turns. The pickup is awesome too.

Even though I've only had it for 3 weeks, it's an absolute blast to drive! Now I understand V-Dub's "driver's wanted" tag-line. My wife bought a 2005 MkIV in 2/06 and that turned me on to the GTI. The car is perfect and fast as heck. I'm 54 yrs. old and have had Cadillac's, an Old's Aurora, Mazda6 (good car) but the GTI is the fastest, best handling car so far. Period.

This is a really nice car. It has a strong motor, is really responsive, and is well built. It only lacks in one area, the stereo isn't anything special, it's tinny and has no quality. Other than that this car is awesome.

This new GTI is everything the hot hatchback should be. It's quick off the line, has plenty of room and usability, is incredibly fun to drive, and gets pretty good gas mileage. I traded in my '02 Jetta for this car, and went from a true manual to the new DSG transmissoin, but couldn't be happier. The new transmission is what got me interested in this car, and I have to say it has all the benefits of both manual and auto trannies, and no drawbacks. The new styling is splendid, and the plaid interior makes you get in and say "I love this car"

If you were old enough to own and drive an original GTI in '83 and think you're too old now and should drop more money on an Audi or the like, think again. This car is all grown up like you, but still retains its frugal blend of practicality, performance and sublimer. Sure the ad campaigns are geared for a younger demographic, but don't let that deter you from getting what you really want for such little money. After a terrible day at the office, at least you get to drive home!

Another GREAT GTI

Having owned/bought 19 new cars, and being many different brands, the last 3 were GTIs (1995 VR6, 1999.5 VR6, and 2006.5) and for a good reason. Not much compares with the GTIs as far as being true "driver's cars" and when condidering the price of Audi, BMW, & Mercedes, nothing compares. The new GTI is another great evolution over the last. I thought I could never go without the VR6, but the new 2.0 proved me wrong; it has more / great power & torque, better gas mileage & a cool exhaust note. I'm getting 29+ mpg (combined 85+mph California freeways & stop & go). The stereo sounds great and the leather/Top Sport Seats are the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in.

I owned an Audi TT 225 Q and I loved the car. However, after having owned a new GTI 2.0T, just like the Audi A3, I don't know why anyone would put forth the money for the Audi. The Audi, by comparison is cramped and expensive. When I purchased the TT, I didn't spring for the DSG transmission, but after having it in the VW, I never want another car without it. It shifts much faster than any manual I have ever owned. I loved the TT, but the new GTI is much more fun to drive and has a much lighter feel due to the electromechanical steering. This is an A3 for much less. It is definetely worth investigating. I agree with another reviewer here on this site, the stereo is cheap and not very good.

As a spare car in our garage, the GTI sees very little mileage (2,000 miles in our 8 months of ownership). Its build quality is exceptional for a vehicle of this price. There are standard features on this car which cost more on cars costing up to 2.5 times as much. It was against my better judgment to buy a 1st year model car, but problems have been minimal. Overall, this car has been a great buy for the money.

The GTI is fun to drive with its 2.0 turbo engine. It has lots of pickup when you need it. Its fuel economy is outstanding. In the city it gets 28-30 mpg, which is higher than it was rated.

I have in all my life never driven a car that is as much fun as my new GTI. I am 27, so I have had the opportunity to drive a few. The acceleration, handling, and above all else DSG are amazing. Point blank this automatic is by far the best thing on the market today. Don't believe me? Go drive one, but be prepared, after driving one of these babies you'll never want to get back in your old car. So make sure you have your checkbook!
