Used 2003 Volkswagen Golf Consumer Reviews
Great Car
My 2003 Volkswagen Golf is great. It gets excellent gas mileage, about 600 miles per tank of fuel.
Truck-Stop Attention Getter
We purchased a TDI Golf for my wife. Her commute if 1hr. She loves the MPG, sound system and color(black). I love the drive. It cruises with ease on the interstates. Passing is a breeze. Some concerns: cost of maintaining and long term reliability(previous Honda owners). If you want a great small car with some zip, get a TDI Golf. The car takes corners with ease and feels intact with the road at any speed. Hatchback is roomy, but rear seats are not.

One word: Boring.
I've read all the reviews for the 2003 VW Golf GL on this site, and I can't tell if everyone is over the age of 60 or just emotionally tired, but this car puts me to sleep at the wheel, and often! The 120 HP engine is fast enough for me, thus the GL works, but if I had test driven the car longer, I would have realized the the suspension is really, really tame. The car wallows in turns, the back end (even with the short wheelbase)trembles mid corner, and the nose dives under the most gentle of braking. If I could choose a VW again, it'd cope with the reliability problems of the turbocharger and buy the GTi. Other than the performance issues, the standard kit is surprisingly nice for the price.
Value and Enjoyment
I test drove the Matrix, Protege and Protege5 and never really considered VW as a possibility. I was always more of the Japanese type. However, the second I pulled that thing out of the lot my world changed. It's got quite the pick up for 115hp and 120 torque. But I have to agree that the cupholders do block the stereo controls, but I do like how they are tucked away.
