2024 Hyundai Santa Fe
I shopped around and was looking at Chevy Suburbans, Toyota Sequoya, Hyundai Palisade and the new Santa Fe. Having come from driving a Suburban for the pas 8 years, I looked there first. However, I would have to spend over $80K to get what I wanted and I would not save any money on gas. I passed on the Toyota for the same reason. Finally looking the the Santa Fe and the Palisade and … test driving them both, I like the smoother ride of the Santa Fe. The SEL trim to me was the sweet spot. Of all the extras that the more expensive builds had, the only thing I was going to miss was the side cameras. And to me that is not worth an extra $10K. Wireless carplay uses my iPhone and the navigation with Waze is a lot more flexible that any nav system Hyundai would add. Generally, your phone is the best infotainment system on any drive.
Finally to the good part. Everyone mentions that the Hybrid has decent MPG 34/35. But what no one has mentioned is that it has a range of 550 miles; more if you learn to optimize the EV part of the truck. The gas tank is 17.5 gallons. My Suburban had a 27 gallon tank and I could barely get 500 miles out of it. It takes me almost three weeks to fill up. And when I do, its half the price(almost) of what I am used to. The ride is very smooth. The acceleration is great. It's not a sport car but it can move and when it does, the battery gets charged. Plenty of leg room and storage space. Overall it's an enjoyable ride.
OK, here are the negatives and to me they are relatively minor. First, it's a Hyundai. What that means is that there will be quality control issues (assembly QC issues are based at the plant in the US and not Korea), especially on a first year redesign. Since I bought it, there have been three recalls (only one minor one for the hybrid). The car constantly yells at me to take a break (maybe it knows something I don't). I already have a wife so the car needs to keep its opinions to itself. And what's the point for self steering cruise control if it yells at you to keep your hands on the wheel? If I have to have my hands on the wheel, I will steer without its help.
Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase. If I could wrap in in bubble wrap and keep all scratches and dents away, I would.
