Driving is almost free in the Q5e

I have put almost exactly 1000 miles on my Q5 e (plug-in hybrid) and I really like it. I bought BMWs for years but the recent BMW designs turned me off so I decided to try an Audi. My first Audi was an S5 (coupe) and it impressed me very much. A solid ‘thump’ when I closed the door; very good motor; good transmission; good interior materials. When my X6 got totaled, I decided to look at … the Audi. I am not a tree-hugger and did not go shopping for the plug-in version to save the planet, but I actually got the Q5 e for less than the comparably equipped Q5. Tax credits and whatnot, I guess. Just like the S5, the Q5 gives you a satisfying thump when the door closes and is more reassuringly solid than the BMW. The engine is quiet and good for 260 HP or so, and the electric motor is good for another 100 HP. Seats are very comfortable and made of good quality leather; perforated for cooling. Ride is very comfortable, which it should be in an SUV. I don’t understand why any auto manufacturer would tune an SUV to supply a harsh ‘sporty’ ride, except maybe Porsche. The Audi ride is comfortable and well-controlled, even with 20 inch wheels and low-profile (45) run-flats. Cabin is fairly spacious for the segment and four adults can ride comfortably. Second row space isn’t cavernous, but reasonable. Rear seats can be reclined (some) if desired. Not a lot of cargo space. Infotainment and driver’s display are good and I think the Audi app is pretty good. The B&O stereo is very good also. The icing on the cake is that you can get 35 miles or so out of a charge, which just happens to be a round-trip commute for me each day. So I’ve been driving back-and-forth for 5 weeks and still have ¾ of a full tank (which is only 14 gals). I got the vehicle with a full tank and 132 miles on the odo and drove 150 miles on the gas engine. I have now put almost exactly 1000 miles on the vehicle and filled the tank to get a true measure of efficiency. I have burned 13.55 gallons of gas to drive 1000 miles which works out to 74 MPG, but for the daily commute the MPG figure would be well over 100. I recharge the batteries each night after use and have a ‘free nights’ plan, so the electricity to recharge is gratis. I’m paying $3.70 for premium, so I’ve spent $50.14 to go 1000 miles. Pretty cheap but YMMV. My Honda Ridgeline gets about 24 MPG and the wife’s Ford Explorer gets about 22, so the Audi is much cheaper to drive at this point. Again, this vehicle’s battery range works almost perfectly for me and my daily commute to minimize burning gas. But, I can still set off cross-country and refuel in minutes so the vehicle is still practical.
As far as I can tell, Audi provides three modes for power: default (first choice) is battery, third choice is ‘maintain battery’ (aka use the gasoline engine), and the middle ground is ‘auto hybrid.' Auto hybrid attempts to use the battery and the engine in the most efficient manner. Battery runs things until you get to 35-40 mph and then the engine takes over, quite seamlessly. Pressing the accelerator pedal brings the gas engine on sooner. I'm amazed at how smoothly the engine and battery swap in and out of use. Obviously, once the battery is depleted you go back to dino-juice. Recharging at 50% from a 220V outlet gets back to full power (35-40 miles of estimated range) in < 3 hours. Audi provides cables for 110V and 220V. You can set up a preferred recharge time window if you want to manage when the battery is recharged.
My biggest complaint is the steering wheel. Material feel is good but the profile is weird, like a tube that has been flattened about 20% and given pointy sides. Interesting choice by the folks at VAG, but, whatever. But that’s a small complaint. Ingress/egress are easy enough, a/c works well (and I’m in central Texas), there’s plenty of headroom for a 6-footer, infotainment is good, the display resolution is good, overall visibility is good, blind-spot monitoring is very good, road/wind noise is minimal, ride quality is very good, and the vehicle looks good with the black optics package. I’ve always liked the volume knob in the center console so the passenger can turn down the volume if desired. Generally speaking the interior is uncluttered. There are knobs and switches but not an overwhelming number. Steering wheel controls are easy to master. I am quite pleased and look forward to more miles in the Q5e.
(Update) 2,000 miles and still very impressed. Drove cross-country a few days ago (400 miles +/-) and averaged 33 MPG according to the onboard computer. Tracking my mileage through Fuelly, I am averaging 68 MPG overall, not counting the electricity consumed (which, I think I mentioned earlier, isn't showing up on my meter because I charge at night when the electricity is 'free.' Very efficient for 30 miles per day of electric driving while being a comfortable long-range cruiser. And it looks nice, IMO. (5K update in the spring) Still love the Q5. In the colder weather the onboard battery life estimate dropped from 30 - 32 to 25 - 27 which makes sense. Of course actual results depend on driving style just as with an ICE. But with the return of 70 degree weather, the estimate has popped back up to 30+. Wonderful vehicle.
