Finally a Taco I enjoy

2024 Toyota Tacoma SR 4dr Double Cab 4WD 5.0 ft. SB (2.4L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

Test drove all of the competition and for the first time I enjoyed the Tacoma more than the rest. I will say that the Ranger was a close second The good: Engine and transmission are tuned wonderfully , especially considering how clunky the V6 and 6 speed of the outgoing model were. Power is always on tap down low where everyday driving occurs. I haven’t had a stumble or any weird shifts. Buttons galore. If you have fingers you are probably a fan of buttons. Every function has a physical button and is intuitive to use. Safety sense 3 is executed well. The car from the factory with all driving assistance on can basically drive itself. If you aren’t a fan of Nannies like me then they are easy to disable permanently. Seats are miles ahead of the last generation. The lower back portion is firm and supportive without awkward placed lumbar. The base of the seat is soft which is the ideal setup. The seat bottoms are fairly long and tilted which offers tons of thigh support that feel similar to my M3. The ergonomics are excellent and you can drive with your arm rested on either the center console or the door rest comfortably. I’m 5’11” 180lbs so represent an average man pretty well. The handling with the new coil setup is a drastic improvement from the leaf sprung trucks of yesterday. The Electric steering is linear and smooth which makes highway jaunts low effort. The Cons: Toyota gets away with giving you less features in some areas than others because frankly they don’t have to , they know they will sell based on previous track records. The gas tank is too small and is only good for about 300 miles combined. The rear seat is still laughably small. Don’t plan on stuffing people back there regularly unless you just don’t like them. The air dam is goofy but removable . I took mine off immediately and noticed no issues with hitting window sticker MPG. Overall very happy with the Taco so far and looking inside the engine bay it looks fairly straightforward to maintain. They stuck with an air to air intercooler and traditional oil pump, plug changes should be a breeze, and it has that usual Toyota build quality where everything is neatly placed and routed with conduit.

Trendy Tacoma!

2024 Limited. Fun to drive, quiet, with many whistles and bells. Takes a while to learn all the capabilities, but it is an amazing “mid-size” truck. It certainly feels bigger but drives smaller. I can’t say enough good things about the vehicle. Very comfortable driving position. Peppy engine, especially in Sport+ mode (which is only available with the adaptive variable suspension). Back seat is probably not very usable for adults on a long trip, but that is not in my requirement list.

Amazing Power

This truck is fun to drive. I spent extra money for the hybrid when it was finally available and have no regrets. It passes vehicles on the road and climbs hills so effortlessly as if there's a much bigger engine under the hood. Much peppier than that old V6. It feels as if I am driving a bigger truck too. One drawback is there is not a lot of rear seat room for people with long legs but that was not one of my requirements. I just drive alone about 90% of the time and I never tow anything.

Never thought I'd gobble a Taco!

First time I even considered an "import" truck, always stayed with the domestics. This choice boiled down to the Ranger or the Tacoma. The Ranger had the early lead, in no small part as I am a Ford fan but dismayed by the packages Ford put out. No push to start unless you opt for the Lariat package. Really Ford? The Tacoma comes with it, I know it is probably not a deal breaker for most, but I like that I do not have to fumble for a key when I climb in. That being said, lets dive into the other things the Taco brings to the table. Looks: Aggressive styling, not to over the top but enough without being ugly, a complaint I have had with previous Tundra versions. The high stance of the 4x4 is fitting for a truck, but some will not like the 17"-wheel option and probably will wish or add a larger wheel and tire package. Powertrain: Smooth and responsive. Some have complained that it is noisy, I find it much quieter than the 2.0 Eco-boost and more responsive from the start. Turbo lag is not an issue with this engine. The new 8 speed transmission shifts with a smoothness normally reserved for luxury vehicles. Fuel economy is acceptable for a pick -up, but with less than 500 miles on the odometer this metric may change as others in the powertrain category. Interior finish: Some pan the small screen that the SR5 comes equipped with, I prefer that the screen not be overly large, and I find it to be responsive albeit some of the functions are not intuitive as compared to others, Ford's is easier to navigate, but the Apple Car-Play links seamlessly and the screen is easy to read when using the navigation function. Material selection could be improved especially the cloth seats where the material looks and feels like base model than step up and the lack of a power driver seat in a 46K plus pick-up befuddles the mind. These days a power driver's seat should be like power windows, available as a standard feature on all but the base. The controls feel precise and durable though the shifter is a bit clunky moving from gear selection to gear selection, hopefully this minor irritation will improve as it wears in with use. The JBL sound system is not bad, lots of volume adjustments will be required as you toggle through your sources. The XM radio is much softer than the FM channels and requires you to adjust. In the past this has always been opposite experience in my Fords. The sound quality is good and the channel separation acceptable. The included Bluetooth speaker is active when docked and adds an excellent mid-channel to a podcast and seamlessly vanishes when listening to music. Driving characteristics: This truck is smooth, for a truck this small. Road noise is not overly intrusive, and conversations can be easily conducted between the front passengers. Steering inputs are light, maybe a bit too much as I find myself correcting for small inputs, this could just be a "getting used" too item more than a fault in the truck itself. Like all trucks it causes you to pause if you come into a curve too aggressively, thankfully the brakes are beefy and pull the truck down quickly and precisely. Complaints? Other than the ones noted above, and a few that would be petty and do not affect the operation of the vehicle as they are mostly ascetics, the tires! The tires! The tires! The Toyo Open Country H/T AS radials are cheap and look cheap and do not befit a 46K truck. Period. Every other truck I have purchased in the past 20 years, that is about 6 of them, have had much better tires and more befitting a truck. I live in upstate New York and these tires are not instilling confidence in my ability to get out of my rural driveway and road when the snow falls. There are much better options to offer on a truck, especially an 4x4 equipped with a cold weather package, Now I am going to have to drop another $1,000 to fix this issue if for no other reason than my own piece of mind. Some will just drive on this till they wear out; I cannot afford the issue of being stuck. I will update this review as mileage and impressions dictate, as with the low miles I have put on the truck have not allowed me to make a definitive impression if I am happy with my decision to gobble this Taco or if I am in for a case of heartburn.

Toyota Quality lagging on 2024 Tacoma

Greg Rowe, 11/19/2024
2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4dr Double Cab 5.0 ft. SB (2.4L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

I like the 2024 Tacoma overall, and in fact traded in a 2023 model to get the 2024. Likes: quick acceleration with 2.4 liter turbo 4-cylinder. Dislikes: (1) molding around front right wheel well came loose after a few months, and it took the dealer 4 months to get a new one. (2) reading in a 4th Gen Tacoma online forum about failures in the new 8-speed automatic transmission. It seems to impact Tacomas within a certain range of VINS, and ours falls within that range. The Toyota advise is to simply drive the truck until the trans fails, and then they will replace it. That is not comforting given that in 2025 we have trips planned from CA to Tucson AZ and Green Bay Wisconsin. (3) Electronics that are too hard to figure out. Just to change the time when daylight savings ended, I had to look at the owners manual. It has to be done through "settings." Why not just a simple set of H and M buttons, like my 2022 4Runner. (4) The federally required system that brakes the vehicle even when you don't want it do so. My wife won't drive the truck in city traffic because of this. Her attitude is that she has been driving since 1969 and knows how to use a brake pedal. (We are both in our early 70s but very physically active. We use the Tacoma to transport our tandem road racing bike, and use the 4Runner when we go backpacking.)
