Vibrations, Howls, Squeaks, Failed Rear Diff

Transmission and Engine combo feels very weak. It shifts erratically. It will downshift when coasting through the neighborhood at random. It will not hold 6th gear with even the slightest hill or head wind. The transmission will shift flare from 2nd to 3rd gear often when cold. The transmission also has a slipping sensation from time to time. The engine feels weak with this transmission. You have to floor it to get power out of it. The fuel economy is about the same as previous generation Tacomas at about 18.9 MPG....really not a major improvement when considering the step down in performance with this new trans and motor. The rear leaf springs squeak like crazy at only 10,000 miles and have been to the dealer three times for it. I also have a case with Toyota Corporate they are saying there is no fix for it and to live with it. It is embarrassing to drive through a parking lot and people look at your brand new nearly $40K truck because it squeaks like a rusty box-spring mattress. There is a noticeable vibration at highway speeds felt in the Steering wheel and in the gas pedal, if you let off the gas it goes away but if you apply gas it vibrates/buzzes. It is very annoying and almost makes my hands numb while driving. The rumor is that this is a Design oversight/glitch that Toyota dropped the ball on. I drove another brand new 2016 Tacoma and it exhibited the same traits. Finally the rear differential was making a howling noise at 50 to 60 mph if you are feathering the throttle or lightly applying throttle on a downhill stretch of freeway. I took it to the dealer and they said it was not normal so they kept my truck for 3 days and replaced the entire rear differential already, with less than 12K miles on it. I couldn't believe it. Now not even 300 miles later I hear the noise coming back again in the rear differential. I would have a hard time recommending the 2016 Tacoma to anyone. It seems like Toyota Quality Assurance has really dropped the ball and Corporate is slow to release any information or resolutions for these issues. Driveline vibration has been an issues for years past on previous generation Tacomas as well so this is very troubling.

Heading Back to the Dealer After First Fue Fill Up

I so much want to like and live with the 2016 Tacoma, but as other reviewers have mentioned the truck has a fatal flaw with its engine/transmission combination. As a result, I'm returning the truck w/ only 400 miles as it almost couldn't make it to my office today with a full tank of gas! Granted I work at 6,200' and there was a 20 mph wind blowing. But seriously, this truck is a dog. I read on Edmunds that the new V6 (with supposedly 42 increased HP) combined with the Atkinson cycle and a 6-speed automatic transmission is a full second slower in speed tests from 0 to 60 than last year's model, and I believe it. It sounds like a bad marriage. The transmission keeps the engine in the low RPM range, but w/ the Atkinson cycle, peak HP & torque is up around 5,000 rpm. Very hard to get the truck to its power band. It feels like the two systems were designed by engineers who didn't consult one another. The truck is always shifting. At times, it feels as though it's in too high of a gear and the engine/transmission vibrate. When you step on the gas, there's a huge delay as the transmission may have to drop 2 or 3 gears to get going and then you have to wait for the engine to rev up. There is an extra power button, but that doesn't help all that much. Apparently, the Atkinson cycle works well in the Toyota Prius, where it saves gas, but not in this truck. It's because of its lack of power, and more importantly, snow accelerator response, that I'm returning my 2016 Toyota Tacoma.

Underpowered motor, terrible transmission, issues

Have had many issues with leaf springs squeaking toyota says they can't fix it. Three times been to dealer for this. Rear differential was making a howling noise on freeway between 55 and 65 mph when feathering the accelerator pedal and ended up being replaced under warranty but now the replacement rear diff is making the same noise. Spent many hours at dealer and toyota tech flew out to look now they claim it's normal. Driveline vibrations noticed at 1800 to 2200rpms. Toyota claims this is normal too but never had this on any other vehicle I've owned. Toyota quality control going down the crapper. The fuel economy is no better than my old 2009 Tacoma yet they put a smaller motor and it performs terribly...it lacks low-end torque. Dealer applied software update to "fix" transmission shifting constantly but after about 1000 miles the tranny shifts like poorly again. I thought it would get better with mileage but it has only gotten worse. Would not buy again

Follow-up to my earlier review

A few weeks ago I wrote the review "Be Careful and Test Drive". Since then I towed a 5X8 UHaul trailer from Florida to Ohio - approx. 1100 miles. I simply wanted to report that the average mpg dropped from my normal average 20 mpg without towing a trailer to 15.3 mpg with towing the trailer which was full. Quite a drop in mpg evidencing once again the "lugging" problem that I and others have reported. Hopefully Toyota will come out with a fix caused by the engine/transmission defaulting to 6th gear and 1100 RPM. I could barely get up the hills/mountains on I-77 through Virginia and West Virginia without manually shifting. Even my salesman in Colorado where I purchased the vehicle said "this vehicle is not suitable for the Colorado mountains". I should have listened to him.

Adjust your expectations

First off, I bought this truck (2016 Toyota Tacoma Sport TRD) to avoid using either of our other cars for hauling lumber and plywood that I use in my woodworking as well as to have a utility vehicle available for bad weather. This Tacoma fits those needs quite well, so I am quite pleased with that. But, now that the fanfare is making its way around the internet about how great the upgrades are from the 2015 model I am really glad that I waited, I can only conclude that the 2015 and previous was a real dog. Toyota gets a big plus for the redesign of the interior, I really like the infotainment system and navigation. It is very logical and intuitive and was easy to get used to. While much is being said about the new Atkinson cycle engine, I have to admit to being disappointed. I just returned from a 700 mile round trip from Denver to Moab, and I was amazed at how hard the engine had to work to only maintain the speed limit (which happens to be 80 mph in Utah). The transmission was in either third (at 4,200 rpm) or fourth (at 3,500 rpm) most (say 75%) of the time. As a result, milage came in around 17, not too hot, and actually worse than my previous Toyota (Tundra with the V8 and lots more power). There are some key things missing besides adequate power: who doesn't include remote garage door opener as standard nowadays, no back up parking assist, no blind spot indicator, no auto headlights, no dual-zone temp control, no remote tailgate lock, no automatic headlights. For $36,000 maybe I should not expect all of this, but surely Toyota could have popped for some of it. If the company is serious about reversing the market share loss they must be feeling from the GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado they need to step up and make standard some of the features that just seem basic to all cars today. I would have been willing to pay more, and would have felt the value was there. So, adjust your expectations when you think about this truck. If you want a good basic truck like I ended up with you should still consider the competition. But, all in all, I like this thing enough to keep it for the 2 year term of the lease. I am sure by the end of that time Toyota will have seen they missed the mark and will update this vehicle to modern standards. Update - April 2016 My opinion remains the same regarding the Tacoma after six months of use. Nice utility vehicle, but disappointing in its lack or features considering the price. Toyota can do way better, making the features of a Camry (which has a lower price than the Tacoma) standard on a Tacoma would have gone a long way to making a loyal customer. But they chose not to, taking the added sell price as margin, which is Toyota's choice to make, not mine. But, this is the last Tacoma I will buy given the relatively high price and lack of features.
