Cannot wait to get rid of this 2016 Tacoma when the lease expires. What a dog. New updates - 1. mileage dropped to 10 mpg when towing; 2. NAV screen goes black at least 1x per day and resets itself; and 3. wind howling noise driver side front window. And off course still the same old lack of responsiveness of the engine-- normally runs at less than 2000 rpm and you have to push accelerator pedal more than 1/2 down before it responds creating a very dangerous condition in traffic. C'mon man.

Hate the Auto Transmission

OK, I love the truck, handling, features, engine, wish it were a bit smaller actually(like the older models), but because of the size it does tow things well. I HATE my automatic transmission. Perhaps from the engineers point of view it is supposed to downshift two gears and rev up to 3000 rpm, but as an operator who has driven mostly manual trannies this is mentally exhausting. I would be happy if there was a way to put it in 6th or 5th or even 4th if you need that, and make it stay there. Just like a manual transmission. Let the engine pull a little. If I am stupid enough to let it pull too much that's my problem. I live in an area with small gentle hills and the constant shifting is insane. Also the locking torque converter decouples too quickly. Now perhaps with the new Atkinson Cycle engine it can't handle loads as efficiently so it bumps the rpm, idk. But it's annoying. I would recommend an automatic transmission similar to what Hyundai uses. In the manual mode if you have it in 6th gear it will stay in that gear until the vehicles slows below 40 mph, then downshifts to 5th. It does this in all gears until you come to a stop. Then it is in 1st. As you accelerate you have to do your own shifting. But on small hills it will hold it's gear or you can make the decision to downshift and normally the torque converter doesn't decouple either. It acts as if it is a manual transmission. So why didn't I just get the manual? Because the final gear ratios are not as good. If the manual had the same overall ratios I would have stayed with that. As to why they gear them that way I don't know. This thing has plenty of power so it can't be that. Maybe they don't think Americans can shift or handle a clutch very well. A manual should be more efficient in both power and economy but because of the ratios it is not as good in highway mpg. HATE THIS TRANSMISSION!!!!!!!!!!NOT HAPPY Update 1-30-17 Put some Goodyear "FierceAttitude 265/75/16 on it. Rides a little stiff and noisier but not as bad as I expected. Awesome in the snow. Love the 4 wheel drive and the limited slip rear end. Some people are complaining about not enough power. I disagree. With this new Atkinson cycle engine the power is there but at a higher rpm. Not real happy with the gas mileage. Used to have an '86 4-Runner and it would get 24-27 . Just can't do that with this bigger vehicle. I still DO NOT like the Auto Tran. The other day it shifted 17 times accelerating up to 65 mph up a small incline/hill.....REALLY? I would LOVE to be able to manually control my gears. Get rid of the S-mode and make it a manual override. Maybe if you are racing the S mode is important....Maybe. But for a working type truck it is truly worthless IMO. I want economy and I want power when I want it not when the Tranny senses something. Tranny can't see the hills and doesn't know what my brain is anticipating. Hope that helps guys

A Solid Ride and a Lot of Fun to Drive!

I was looking to replace my 2005 Avalanche (which I loved) but the size and price of new full-size trucks really turned me off. Started looking at the mid-size trucks and settled on a Tacoma. I looked around and found a good deal on a TRD Off-Road, 6.1 ft bed, 6 cyl model Tacoma with the automatic transmission. Had read all of the early reviews about the transmission/engine combo and the gear hunting. My truck did the gear hunting as well for the first 500+ miles but now it is smoothing out nicely. What previous reviewers failed to mention (or check out) is that the transmission is an 'adaptive' transmission and it will adapt to the driver's driving habits. I called the dealership where I purchased my Taco and a service specialist explained the adaptive break-in of the transmission. He told me to drive the truck like I normally would and he was right. The transmission has smoothed out and the truck is performing well - certainly meeting my expectations. When I punch it, it responds nicely. It is a real pleasure to drive - feels very solid and has plenty of power for what it is. What it isn't is a full-size behemoth that surrounds you in a huge cabin with bell-and-whistle overload and handles and feels like a boat. I'm fascinated with the amenities that it does have - navigation and sound system is great. Love the auto stick which allows for upshifting and downshifting like a manual but without having to push a clutch pedal (more leg room). Interior and controls are laid out nicely however I am not crazy about the position of the 4wd knob - too close to all of the other similarly shaped control knobs and easy to mix up and put in 4wd when you are not looking at it and think that you are turning on the fan. My first towing experience has also gone smoothly. Those who tow will love the back-up camera which is positioned in a manner that allows the driver to easily position the hitch ball exactly under the trailer hitch without exiting the cab. This is my first Taco and I couldn't be happier. The mpg is climbing and I have experienced as high as 23-24 mpg on the flat at 65 mph. Around town I am getting about 20-21 mpg. Towing about 3,000 lbs my mileage dropped to about 17 mpg but that also included a 1,000 ft gain in elevation. Some reviewers complained about headroom but I have found that there is plenty of headroom - I am 5'10" and have several inches to spare above my head. the room behind the seats in the double cab is huge - they fold down flat and create a very spacious platform for carrying gear, luggage, etc. Overall, this truck is very well-engineered and if you are looking for a truck that is solid, practical, responsive, fun to drive, and that won't break the bank, the 2016 Tacoma is the way to go!

First time dissapointment with Toyota

Very underpowered. Trans continously shifts to keep rpms up. Took 1200 miles trip to Florida. In 20 to 25 mph headwind will not stay in high gear using criuse but runs at higher rpms. Constantly downshift in cruise even with very slight road incline. Would never pull a trailer on long trip. I am 69 an sadly this is most dissapointing vehicle I have ever purchased. Running the vehicle with the ETC button on gains you 1.5 to 2.5mpg. Using that mode, I got 24 mpg with the last two tanks of gas. Pulling a 14 foot, 2500 lbs travel trailer the Tacoma will barely go 65 mph on a freeway and gets 12mpg.

Expensive Hand Vibrator for $41k!

I really wanted to like this truck. Styling is fine, interior is a little cramped, especially the back seats. Front seats are flat. No glovebox light and no power driver's seat in the Limited. Trans takes a long time to learn and shift well. Mileage is just OK for this fancy new engine. Quiet enough inside. Tech inside is great. Great ground clearance and handles snow and fire roads perfectly. If it actually let me drive on the freeway for any distance without numbing my hands, I could live with the little things and would love the truck. I traded a '10 FJC in for this, as my wife and I wanted a truck and we love the reliability of our previous 5 Toyotas. Big mistake...wish we still had the FJC. Between 2100-2400 RPM's, the steering wheel has a resonating buzz in it that puts my hands and lower arms to sleep (never had this happen, even on any of my Harleys). This happens to correspond to highway and freeway speeds in 5th and 6th gears of the new automatic trans. Took it in and, after the dealer checked it (acknowledging the buzziness, BTW), left it for a day with Toyota Engineers from Denver. The response? The buzziness was 'normal' for this truck and "the steering functions as designed". Huh? Found several threads on different forums where others are having this issue, some worse than others. People report that when they report it to Toyota Corporate, they are told that "we haven't heard of this issue with anyone else". Huh? Dealer says that unless Toyota comes out with a fix, I'm stuck. As it is, I can only drive around town and can't stand any trips of more than a few miles. I didn't spend $40k for a local hauler. This will be traded as soon as I decide between the upcoming redesigned Honda Ridgeline or the '17 GMC Canyon Denali, no matter the financial hit I take. Probably the last Toyota I ever own...their Customer Service and quality has tanked. I gave it two stars because it has a lot of potential. For now, I'd stay away until they can figure this out...or take yours for a long test drive in manual mode and make sure that the buzziness isn't there (although some posters are saying they have none, then it shows up with a vengeance, later.
