A Big Headache!

I purchased this car in August 2001. It has been in the shop 5 times for repairs. This is not quite what I have been accostomed to in new car purchases. Toyota needs to take a good look at the design of this auto. Fun to drive but certainly not worth the aggravation of scheduling recurring problems.

2001 4wd Rav4 94,900 miles : I research reviews; mileage of many brands and models. Toyota people love their Toyota's. But I found they are just like any other car and worse than domestic . Parts need replaced just like any other car...surprise. Any Toyota owner I've talked to never had to do anything to their Toyota's. Until I told them how I've had to work on my wife's. Now my sister tells me she had to replace a engine about 6 years old . O and a person at work, "o yeh you have to replace parts as the go bad". Toyota people make me sick! I had to buy a special Toyota socket just to change alternator for the tensionor... NO IT'S NOT A 14MM like the online mechanic said. It's a special socket (cta2717) you can get at Sears for $18 after shipping. And it takes more than a week to receive it. What a rip off Toyota. I work on a lot of cars...I talk to a lot of people...better believe I not telling them how great they are!!! I'll buy a old Chevy next , Thank you.*Next 6 months no more repairs needed. If I can get another 6 months like this I could add to this review with more positive statements. I added a star to reliability today. Not sure if I take that star down 1 or not. Reasons: almost 106k and needs a new fuel tank and assuming new lines...but it is 16 years old.So this suv has the bad computer. On winter roads the it tell the trans to change gears for no reason. Almost killed me. What a piece of crap.Edmunds asked for a update and how I feel about my toyota now...TRADED THAT P.O.S. for a 2010 rav4 had it for years now and now I'm a Toyota lover...Glad I gave em a second look.

Outstanding beach car

I traded my 2000 Honda Civic in on this one in Dec of 2000 for the new rav4. I was highly impressed before I even bought it, especially with the way cool interior design. Afte buying, this car has blown me away with its reliability: I currently have 107,000 miles over 3 yrs, kept up with oil and maintenance, and the only problem I have had is replacing the brake pads twice total. Nothing else has gone wrong, and it has been unthinkably dependable. When you take out the back 2 seats, you've got more storage room than a Land Cruiser. Outstanding overall

I put 30,000 miles on in 8 months. Not a single problem. All wheel drive excellent in 6" snow and on steep muddy mountain roads.

We bought our silver, 5-speed, L series beauty-of-a-car on Mother's Day of this year. So far we ABSOLUTLY love it! We got it with 70,311 miles and it drives like brand new! and it has 73,423 miles (as of 7/20/05) now. We haven't actually tried the AWD the way it was built yet, but some friends of ours that have one says that "it drives as if there weren't any snow" do I'm anxious to try it out! I've notice a hair-line crack where the plastic aluminum on the driver's door handle is. The sound is --okay. Over all I'd give the car... well let's just say that I'm gonna be buying another one someday! :) It's a BIG step up from 2000's model, it looks sexy!
