Good mileage, but quality & reliability issues

2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limited 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

Smooth drive in flat terrain, but struggles to go uphill in highway (noisy and slow). Interior quality has improved slightly - it's not all plastic as it used to be in recent years even in the Limited trim; looks like Toyota has heard the customer complaints and added some softer touch in some places, but still has a far way to go catch up to the top trim line of Honda or Ford. I bought this RAV4 as I wanted a small SUV with hybrid power train and below 35k. While this has lived up to the expectation on gas mileage, I have had a couple of major issues already during the past two months - 1. The power rear lift gate doesn't work any more. The power feature is gone, and it is not even possible to open or close the door manually. The nearby Toyota ordered some parts (strut and electronic computer module) couple of weeks ago, and I still haven't heard from them. 2. The brakes are quite noisy (squeaks) when going reverse, and I am hoping to address this with the dealership when going back to fix the rear lift gate. Toyota has been cutting corners and using cheap materials over the past decade; but most importantly, their quality is clearly not where it used to be. With the significant quality issues just within two months of use, and it's poor performance when going uphill in the highway, this was obviously a bad purchase. I should have ignore the hybrid / gas mileage benefit, and gone with a Honda/Acura/Ford instead.

The cargo of a SUV with the MPG of a car.

Well at 7 years it was time for us to part ways. I wanted something newer, with new technology like CarPlay. Originally I had a replacement order in for a 2023 RAV4 but the dealer told me 6-9 months at best. I waited 2, then ordered an Escape, got it in 10 weeks, and traded in the RAV4. Got a great trade-in price, they certainly hold good value. Happy with my 2023 Escape, so look for my reviews for that vehicle. The RAV4 held up great and I would be happy to get another. ----- Hard to believe I've had this almost 6 years. Still happy with my choice of vehicle. Year round I get decent performance and mileage with it, especially now that gas prices are climbing high! ----- Had the vehicle 2.5 years now. Still happy with it. Still getting over 30mpg on average (between winter and summer). Can be a little noisy inside when trying to pass and the little engine is running hard. Comfort is still good. Cargo space is enough for me. I'm still very happy with the vehicle. ----- I've had the vehicle 9 months now, still very happy with mileage, performance and comfort. It handled winter snows just fine, better than I expected it to. No vehicle is perfect, but I am still satisfied with my purchase. ----- I was looking for a vehicle with decent MPG but wanted comfortable seating and decent cargo capacity. The Hybrid RAV4 fit the bill perfectly. Comfortable seating for 4 adults with a little cargo, or knock down the rear seats for increased cargo space. Good, smooth ride for a SUV, adequate performance for navigating busy highways (remember, this IS a SUV and not a sports car). I get amazing MPG considering the size and weight of the vehicle. The Limited is loaded out with technology, although the "Entune" system is out of the 1980's and the sound is weak. Shop around for best price, and get all the accessories on-line to save a lot of money. This is a great vehicle and I hope to drive it for many years to come.

A great choice for an SUV, but some compromises

Comfortable, rides well, good performance, Hybrid is icing on the cake! There are some compromises. The hybrid batteries compartment causes the cargo floor to be raised from the back of the rear seats to the back of the front seats, making loading of a large object more inconvenient. The performance and economy of the hybrid is worth it. The headlights are terrible. The halogen low beams seem poorly designed to get light where you need it. I've read the LED headlights on the Limited are better. The all wheel drive system is interesting, having a separate electric motor for the rear wheels. The buyer needs to understand that this is not a true off road vehicle. But should be great for light off road use. So far I am very happy with the vehicle, but it is still very new. Update after 10,000 miles. The car is great to drive. I replaced the headlight bulbs with LED bulbs and it made a world of difference with nightime driving. The driver's seat bottom is hard so I put a gel seat cushion on it and it helped a great deal. The Heating vents have two dashboard vents on either side of the steering wheel. The one on the right side blows hardly any air. This leaves my right hand very cold on a cold day. Had service check it out and they said there was nothing wrong with it. Overall I like the car very much, but Toyota seems to be slipping some on their design details.

Having owned Toyota pick up, Solaris, Camary, Corolla, 4 Runner, Avalon, (3) Prius, (3) RAVs, I think I can speak on behalf of Toyota owners. On behalf of Toyota owners this Hybrid Limited RAV is in many ways the best Toyota I've owned. It is an overall 95 out of 100%. There are a few details Toyota could have added to give it best SUV ever built claim. It's that good. What is stupid is those little details are features provided on other Toyotas and not hard to add. Never the less, I love this RAV.

This is my second RAV4 . I read reviews that the RAV4 s are a little sluggish as they only have the 4 cyl. model now. The Hybrid gives great early acceleration, and right now it is averaging 32/33 mpg in the mountains. The hybrid braking takes some getting used to..feels a little "mushy", but the car handles great in all weather... I've already taken it through rain. wind and snow, it was really secure feeling. Very happy, my son has my old 2008 RAV4 with 200k miles on it, and it's doing great too, love Toyota.
