HAPPY HIGHLANDER OWNER

I am very happy with my Highlander, which i have owned for six months. It is a pleasure to drive. It has good acceleration and handles well. The interior is spacious and comfortable. The only negative is the feature which turns the engine off and restarts it when stopped at a traffic light, it seems a little rough.

LOVING this fantastic suv! I did a ton of research, so I can save you a lot of time here. Just the right size if you want a bigger vehicle, and a BARGAIN actually, considering it has the LEGENDARY Toyota engine quality. Drives very nicely. I prefer this body style to what is coming out in 2020. Everyone I talked to loved theirs. One person said "Toyota has never let them down" and I can say the same after buying several different Toyotas over the years! I considered all other models of similar size and the smaller suvs this time around, and didn't make up my mind easily. Two competitors had tempting longer warranties and cheaper (you know which ones), but in the long haul, who knows what problems they could have, especially after reading about them. Competitors have nice looking cars, but engine qualities inferior. I considered Honda Pilot and CRV, BUT read about their engine and battery problems, so crossed off that brand too. Fords/GMC nice, but clunky heavy, and well, "you know..." After much research, ended up back at Toyota! Drives smooth. The RAV4s are also nice, almost bought that, but that's what I drove for the past 9 years and now have a need for a little more room. Highlander seemed better balanced and smoother than 4Runner. The Highlander may lack a bit in styling, but I went for reliability, and still think the car is beautiful! Get yours before this body style sells out, unless you like the 2020 look. I bought new since they are just a bit more money than the expensive used ones I found. With their reputation, I'm surprised the Highlanders aren't a bit higher priced - but I'm glad they aren't! Also, I don't care about this feature as much - but some people think the infotainment/info screen isn't great, it seems ok for my basic needs. I DO like that it doesn't stick up above dashboard.

A Step Backwards For Toyota's Highlander

2019 Toyota Highlander XLE 4dr SUV (3.5L 6cyl 8A)

I recently traded my 2018 Toyota Highlander in for a 2019. To my surprise (and disgust) I found that the Entune system in this "NEW" vehicle did NOT work properly. It would not accept nor carry out ANY voice commands while in the XM Radio mode. After taking it to my local dealer 3 days after purchase I was told there was nothing wrong with it and it was working fine. I got the service manager to come out and look at it and while HE attempted to give the radio some verbal commands it actually paired his cell phone, pulled up a number from HIS phone and asked if this was the number he wanted to reach. Told me it was broken, he'd have to order parts, they would be in within a few days and they would contact me. Waited a week, then called the dealership to find out what was wrong only to find out that service manager had left the business. Brought it back a second time and again was told it was fixed and working fine, NOT! Got the new "acting" service manager out to my car and he couldn't make it work properly either. Asked me to bring it in again on a specific date and they would get with the "engineers" in CA to resolve the problem. So I went back on that date and spent 3-1/2 hours waiting in the waiting area only to have this fella come out to drop the news on me that indeed, the Entune system was working AS DESIGNED and that Toyota had in fact put a system in the 2019 Highlander that WOULD NOT respond to voice commands in the XM mode. What the hell is THAT about? Had a system that worked well and then replaced it with and inferior system without telling anyone, the customers, dealerships, or service departments. How stupid can you be to put a radio in a $39,000.00 car that doesn't work as well as the previous year’s model? They tell me they can't fix it and a new radio wouldn't do any good because they would just send them another one just like this one. I am totally disgusted with Toyota for pulling this kind of crap and will NEVER purchase another Toyota in my lifetime. I would also suggest if you have a Toyota that has an Entune system in it that works that you keep it because Toyota is going to screw you over and sell you a car with one that doesn't work as you'd expect, and they WON'T tell you beforehand!

We are a Toyota family with never a problem except for this vehicle. Pros: ride, interior comfort (except passenger seat), styling. Cons: * Bad transmission... slight (momentary) hesitation when accelerating. Dealer says this is "normal". Taking car in for fuel pump recall. If this fixes acceleration problem I will amend my review. * Passenger seat (leather) slopes down in front causing passenger to constantly have to reposition themselves. Power is only for front/back and seat back. Our 2013 Highlander has cloth seats & they are much more comfortable over extended driving distances. It is frustrating when taking a new car in with an obvious problem (transmission). They drove the car, admitted the hesitation, and all they can say is "that's normal". Or, as a second comment: "This is a learning transmission."

As many others have commented the navigation and voice recognition from Toyota is almost useless. On some occasions it has taken us on detours which added 45 minutes to our trip. Looking on a map afterward it was totally absurd. If you carry any small cargo in the rear, be aware that the third row seats do NOT fold down flat. The net result of this is that small things constantly fall over as they don't sit flat. May not seem like a big deal but it is a real nuisance for me being in sales. My samples are ALWAYS scattered all over the cargo area. This is my third Toyota and I'm still unhappy with their transmissions. I was told this year's transmission was computerized and solved all of the previous lagging acceleration after shifting. It has NOT. ALL still true. Voice recognition is still amateurishly annoying.
